Denso Seals Cable Entry Ductsat RHS Garden WisleyAs part of refurbishment works at the Royal HorticulturalSociety’s Garden at Wisley in Surrey, Winn & Coales (Denso) Ltdhas supplied Densoseal 16A™ for the prevention of wateringress via cable entry ducts in the switch room and powerstations on site.

A self-supporting, non-settingmastic, Densoseal 16A™was developed for the sealingof cable ducts, conduits andservice entry pipes or sleevesfrom the ingress of water andgas. The firm, fibrous masticcreates a flexible seal aroundelectrical supply cables and isparticularly suitable for ductsthat are wet or liable to water

entry. Compliant with BritishTelecom Specification M212C,it can also be used for theprofiling of mechanical jointson hot pipes to permit theapplication of tapes.

RHS Garden Wisley, theflagship garden of the RoyalHorticultural Society covers 76hectares (240 acres) and thethree new power stations and

Denso North America CanadaSupplies Protal™ Epoxy Coatingfor Mainline Coating Project Denso North America in Canada recently supplied Denso Protal7250™ for a mainline coating project with Canadian NaturalResources Limited (CNRL). CNRL has one of the largest worldclass oil sands mining operations with over 6 billion barrels ofcrude oil reserves. They are an effective and efficient operatorwith a diversified portfolio of assets in North America, the UKNorth Sea and Offshore Africa.

CNRL Horizon mine requiredexternal coating of a large 72”diameter steel water line tosupply their horizon bitumenproduction facility. The fusionbond epoxy applicators in

western Canada were unable toperform the application as thepipe diameter would requiremodifications to their facility. Denso Canada in conjunctionwith their master distributorAltek Industrial Supplyrecommended that CNRL utilizeProtal 7250 for the 3 km ofmainline coating.

automated roller system that wasadjusted to roll the pipe whilethe spray applicator applied theDenso Protal 7250 epoxy at 25-35 mils DFT. The mainlinecoating portion of the projectrequired a substantial total of35,200 Liters of Protal 7250.

Once the pipe lengths were

completed and transported tosite, they were installed byanother Denso approved sprayapplicator who coated the girthwelds with Protal 7250 througha portable plural spray system.

The project was completed ontime with excellent results, muchto the satisfaction of CNRL.

SeaShield 2000 FD™Protects the GSPC LNG JettyGSPC LNG is a joint venture of Gujarat State Petroleum Corpand Adani Enterprises. Some of the piles at the new LNG jettyin Mundra, India, were to be protected at the splash zone.Many solutions were considered due to the number of challenges the job would face, including rough seas, long pilelengths, a small window for working, cost considerations andthe need for a quick installation.

The challenge for Denso wasto offer protection for threedifferent types of infrastructure,each having their own specificissues. The project owners knew

Winn & Coales (Denso) Ltd were recently asked to specify theircorrosion prevention coating systems for a buried gas pipelineproject in Dubai. The project undertaken by contractor GlobalTechnologies Projects and Services included the full protectionof a number of 24” diameter block valves, 2” diameterconnecting valves, tie-ins and straight pipe lengths.

however that this would not bedifficult for Denso due to their85 plus years of dealing withand solving this type ofproblem worldwide.

The chosen solution fromDenso was three differentsystems which were as follows.

The selected Denso Solutionscomprised 3 different genericcoatings.

System 1 (Epoxy) – for the 24”diameter block valves plusstraight pipe sections:

A coating of Denso Protal7200™ spray applied to aminimum of 500 microns.

System 2 (Petrolatum) – for theprotection of the 2” diameter valves:A coating of Denso Paste™ isfollowed by Densyl Mastic™ to fill any voids. A spiral wrap of DensylPetrolatum Tape™ with a 55% overlapis then applied. A final spiral wrap ofDenso PVC Outer Wrap™ with a 55%overlap completes the system.

System 3 (Bitumen) – for theprotection of the pipe tie-ins:A coating of Denso Primer D™applied at a minimum of 150mm either side of the coating interface isfollowed by a spiral wrap ofDensopol™ 60HT Bitumen Tape with a 55% overlap. A final spiral wrap ofDenso PVC Outer Wrap™ is appliedwith a 55% overlap to complete thesystem.

The original Seashield Series80™ and 100™ installation wascompleted in late 1990’sproviding good corrosionprotection through several majorriver floods which sent debrisdownstream subsequentlyknocking off some of thestrapping, the surviving strapswere however in good condition.

MSQ put out a tender for the completion of works on thetopside and the 64 octagonal406mm steel piles. Pensar wasawarded the overall project,appointing Marine Civil

Contractors as literal “subbies” in the water, removing and re-installing the Seashield systems.

Inspection of the pilesubstrate under the layers ofHDPE, Bitumen and Petrolatumpaste found the piles were still ina very good condition - with nomajor wall loss observed in allmeasured inspections. The mostdifficult part of the job for thecrew at MCC was removing theDensopol bitumen tape due tohigh adhesion properties as aresult of subjection to nearly 20extremely hot summers.

Maritime Safety Queensland removed and reapplied Seashield Series 100™to the Pinkenba jetty (Brisbane River) at their headquarters in Brisbane.

Dive crews were required as thedesign specification was - 1m LATproviding 5m of pile coverage onthis jetty.

The Denso Seashield Series 100offers effective protection and canbe used as part of a maintenanceand inspection program. In thiscase, the piles were still in a verygood condition even after around20 years’ service and the inspectionsuggests that if the mechanicalprotection installed over the DensoMarine Piling Tape remains in goodcondition, the steel substrate cancontinue to be protected for yearsto come.

Archco™ Water ValveRehabilitation for SouthAustralia WaterSA Water has a number of large bore gate valves that havedeteriorated after years of service. These valves are subjectto extremely large volumes of water that can create hugecavitation. In turn this cavitation erodes or eats the castiron away and stops the valve from sealing.

The product of choice is theDenso Archco 423D™ coating.SA Water have been using thiscoating for a number of yearsbut until recently were unable to repair the large bore valves as the machinery required wasnot available.

SA Water have recentlypurchased a boring and facingmachine so that this work can bedone in house at their MurrayBridge workshop. Photos showthe valve in the boring andfacing machine as well as acompleted face after machining.

The client is extremely happywith this product as it is one ofthe few available that can bemachined and have bearingsand seats pressed in afterwardssaving SA Water tens ofthousands of dollars.

The applicators have beentrained by Denso staff who arealways willing to supplyinformation and supportwhere necessary.

Denso Specified for Phase 2 After 10 YearInspection Pass of Phase 1 Denso South Africa, in conjunction with Esor Construction, who laid the 1st phase of the LusipPipeline Project, were awarded the second phase of the Pipeline Project in Swaziland, (Lusip2), which stretches from Siphofaneni to the Big Bend area, with the pipeline varying from 1200mm OD to 2100 mm OD over the 8 km’s.

The Lusip 1 Pipeline Project wasdone in September 2007. TheDenso technical team recently paida visit to the 1st phase, (10 yearslater), to inspect the applied DensoSystems.

The Denso Covercoat™ &Steelcoat 500™ Systems werefound to be in perfect condition,considering, the system has beenexposed to the harsh environmentfor the past 10 years.

For the second phase of theLusip Pipeline Project, Densooffered our Densotherm HD™System to protect the external fieldjoints and the Denso ST 100Epoxy™ for internal joint repairs. Inthis case, the completed pipelinewill be buried.

The engineer responsible for the project chose notto replace the asphalt system, instead preferring anepoxy coating with high heat resistance up to 250˚F.After difficulty finding a coating that could withstandboth a 250˚F service temperature and the presence ofH2S in the surrounding soil, the engineer contactedDenso for a solution.

Having experience with similar types of aggressiveservice in the past, Denso recommended the Archco453HT™ due to its excellent resistance to high heatand H2S. The pipeline was first blasted to a NACE 2Near-White Blast, and the Archco 453HT™ was sprayapplied in one coat at 30 mils DFT.

The contractor and engineer were very pleasedwith the success of the application.
