Tree characteristics Tree is vigourous with a stong epinastic growth habit (downward drooping characteristic of branches)
Fruit size Fruit size varies from medium to large depending upon yields. Average size peaks on 1x to 2.
Fruit shape Fruit shape varies from round fruit on young vigourous trees to flatter fruit on older mature trees
External appearance The rind colour is deep reddish-orange with a finely pebbled rind.
Internal appearance Even segments. Flesh colour is dark orange. Open core.
Peelability The rind adherence is tight - the variety does not peel easily.
Seed Seedless (triploid)
Flavour The Winola has a rich exceptional flavour with moderately high acids and medium to high sugars.
Hybrid This is a Wilking x Minneola hybrid bred in a triploid breeding program by Dr Alisa Vardi of the Volcani Institute.

Ripening period Colour break in the Western Cape is late May to June. Maturity is in Late August to Early September.
Alternate bearing or other problems
Sensitive to alternaria spot - production is confined to areas with low incidence of the disease. Alternative bearing needs to be managed.
