The Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) is the codification of the general and permanent rules published in the Federal Register by the departments and agencies of the Federal Government. It is updated annually and it is divided into 50 titles that represent broad areas subject to Federal regulation. Meltblown

SorbentA material used to soak up leaks, drips or spills.

HazmatA sorbent material which is designed to soak up many different types of hazardous chemicals. They are usually yellow in color to denote the hazardous liquids they can soak up and make sure they are disposed of properly. Typically used in specialty applications such as soaking up battery acid.

General PurposeA sorbent material, usually gray in color, which is designed to soak up oil and water but not aggressive acids or caustics. Typically, these are cellulose based sorbents which are used indoors in many different MRO applications.

Terminology

CoverstockOil OnlyA sorbent material, usually white in color, which is designed to soak up oil but not water. Typically used in outdoor environments such as spills on open water.

CoverstockTypically a nonwoven fiber that is added to the outer layers of a sorbent to help increase the durablility and strength of the product.

UniversalA sorbent material, usually gray in color, which is designed to soak up oil, water and most chemicals. Typically, these are meltblown sorbents which are used indoors in many different MRO applications.

Cotton from the fields has natural oils that help repel water but absorbs oil based liquids so there are no chemicals that need to be applied to the fibers to make them hydrophobic. However, textile/industrial cotton waste no longer has the natural oils on the fibers and requires a special treatment applied to the fibers to make them hydrophobic.

We have developed a proprietary manufacturing process to use natural cotton. We actually use a raw material from the by-product of the ginning process. That’s why DuraSoakTM Oil Only sorbent products are more natural and tend to be more consistent than those of competitors who get their raw material from inconsistent cotton waste streams.

Oil Only AbsorbentsSellars uses cotton, grown in the USA, to produce the Oil Only ToolBox® DuraSoak™ products. Cotton sorbents actually are excellent oil only sorbents. However, there are significant raw material and manufacturing differences of cotton sorbents in the market today that affects the performance (see article at lower right). The most versatile type of sorbent materialMeltblown sorbents are an oil derivative and are manufactured by extruding polypropylene resin.This manufacturing process creates a sorbent product that is durable and will absorb nearly any liquid that is found in most MRO and environmental spills.

How it’s made...

Raw thermoplastic material in the form of small beads (resin) is gravity fed into the barrel of an extruder.

The material is then spun by a rotating extrusion screw which forces the plastic beads forward at the optimum melt temperature into the die.

The resin strands are forced out thru the die to the accompaniment of a constant blast of hot air which enables the formation of microf ibers.

The loft is adjusted to increase the air space within the woven f ibers for more holding capacity, increased softness, and more cloth-like drape abilities.

The f inished product has a smooth, tight f inish with good tensile strength.

Introducing Sellars All-New Reclaimed RagsWith our NEW Reclaimed Rags line, Sellars is proud to introduce an old favorite to our recycled wiper selection. Reclaimed rags have been around for over 100 years in one form or another. These inexpensive rags still provide a tough, versatile wiping cloth.

At Sellars, we’re adding a few twists to freshen up a tried and true idea. First of all, we work hard to make sure that the weight and fabric type listed on the box is actually what is IN the box.

Second, we remove rags found in poor condition at both the grading and conversion stages. These measures are especially important to customers who’ve experienced reclaimed rags that were poorly sorted, improperly weighed or of an inferior quality in the past.

Another way of giving backOur final twist is the use of Job Corps, a no-cost education and career technical training program administered by the U.S. Department of Labor, in the creation of our Reclaimed Rags. Job Corps is the nation’s largest career technical training and education program for young people age 16 years thru 24 that qualify as low income.

The process of recycling clothing already avoids wasted textiles, creates a significant revenue source for non-profits, provides low cost clothing for third world countries and reduces industrial activity normally associated with such processes as the creation and washing of rental rags. Involving Job Corps is just one more way that Sellars, and by extension you as a customer, give something back.
