Along with Cheng we have manyother talented artists to round out this convention, all of whom I am sure you will enjoy. We haveincluded Florida’s own Ed Troutin a spectacular Bougainvilleaworkshop and a Bring Your OwnTree workshop. Mike Rogers willpresent a Shimpaku Juniper work-shop, Toby Diaz will do two work-shops: one with Shohin Neeabuxifolia, and a second with largeold Ficus nerifolia.

Other artists who will be travelingto us are Sean Smith fromPennsylvania doing both a DaizaCarving workshop and ToolSharpening workshop. These willbe hands-on programs, and detailswill follow in subsequent news -letters. Gustavo Bures fromPuerto Rico will be conducting aworkshop with Bucida spinosa, atree native to his homeland. Thematerial is again world-class andwe searched long and hard tomake sure it was worthy of theseartists. We continue to strive forthe finest quality material tomake our members proud whenleaving their workshops.

We have added another feature tothis year’s program, which is theaddition of several all-day work-shops with the artists. This wasdone to insure that everyone hasample time to complete theirproject with the artist, and thefull design is worked into the treebefore the sessions are over. Withthe use of such challenging mate-rial, you will need more time tocomplete the work, so pleasenotice that many of the work-shops are full-day programs givingyou an enjoyable learning sessionand ample time to complete yourbonsai. They are listed on theschedule of the registration formas Part 1 & Part 2. Please takenotice of these. More details willbe included in the newslettersthat follow.

As you now know, much work hasbeen going on behind the scenesto put this event together. Wewant to make the convention agreat learning experience. Pleaseread your newsletters and if youhave any questions, please feelfree to e-mail the convention team

information pertain-ing to his work andtechniques which willhelp you understandhis art of carving.Much can be learnedfrom his website priorto the convention to

Pemphis acidula – A Tropical Classic

ossessing intricate branch patterns and rich shari, Pemphis acidula is an excellent subject for

bonsai creation. To my knowledge, it is a volunteer native species that grows among rocky crevices along the

coast. Its natural habitat is distributed from the region of southern Malaysia to Okinawa. Influenced by the climate, the

species that grows in Taiwan has hard trunks with small leaves. How -ever, the natural occurring specimens that grow in the Philippineshave stronger character and bigger leaves. The former case is suit-able for compact-to-medium bonsai cultivation but the later one ismore suitable for large scale bonsai. As both the Philippines andTaiwan are often attacked by typhoons during summer, the trunks ofPemphis acidula always have a tortuously-wavy character.

1. Okinawa is alsoone of the nativeregions of Pemphisacidula. It is locatedat a higher latitude, where the climateis a lot colder thanTaiwan.

2. If low tempera-ture were a determining factor,Pemphis acidula would not grownaturally enduring the sea breezeof Okinawa’s rock-faced coast.

So, Pemphis acidula is able towithstand cold winter (at least in the subtropics) if proper cul -tivation is provided.

Recently, cases of fail-ure when cultivatingPemphis have been fre-quent and common in Taiwan. The mainproblem resides onserious leaf fall andbranch loss duringwinter months. As aresult, many horticulturists thusconclude that Pemphis acidulacannot endure cold weather. Infact, Pemphis acidula can with-stand a cold winter, but is indeedsensitive to sudden temperaturechanges. The following facts willevidence their cold hardiness:

What is the proper cultivation? It is a well accepted notion thatit’s a good practice to emulatethe original environment condi-tions of each species, as close aspossible, in order to cultivatehealthy trees. Only with strong, healthy material the aim of artis-tic creation can be achieved. Ifone has a chance to observe nat-ural occurring Pemphis Acidula (ascan be seen in figure i) you willnotice that they grow on spots

where both sea tide and seabreeze reach. Seawater serves asa water source on one hand andeliminates the frost harm in win-ter on the other. Figure 2 showsthat their twisted roots simplycover coarse rocks or coral reefs!According to these observations,we know Pemphis acidula preferto grow on places with good airventilation and need lots of saltwater and fertilizer. In addition,it’s roots like to breathe freely.

quickly in a small container. Forbest results grow it for girth first.

The fast growing angular develop-ment is ideal for training in theclip-and-grow manner. Wire canbe used to add movement to other wise linear branches. Themature plant has very hard wood. When removing an unwantedbranch, consider breaking it andcautiously tearing a shari ratherthan using a concave cutter. Theresults are very natural looking.

During the growing season development is rampant, sprouts

appear on the trunk as well as onbranches. To keep an establishedBahama Berry bonsai lookinggood . . . prune, prune, prune.

LOCATION AND WATER

Nashia is a true tropical, not a sub-tropical plant. It demandssun, heat, humidity, water andgood air circulation. Meetingthese needs can paradoxically create a bit of a problem as a bon-sai. Full sun and good air circula-tion, where it is most happy, cancause this plant to dry out veryquickly; primarily because the

r. Popenoe, a former director of Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, was the first to recognize Nashia

inaguensis as a potential bonsai subject. He pointed it out to me during a Fairchild distribution day back in

the 80s. He was right…woody trunk, small leaves, tiny flowers andfruit, fast growing, and fragrant too!

SWEET NASHIA

Most people know Nashia ina guensis has fragrant leaves. Justbrush lightly and they give a

pleasant herbalaroma. During a particularly heavyblooming of myNashia bonsai, Inoticed a stronger, sweeter smell. It wasthe clusters of tinyflowers. Two scents onone tree, what a prize!

NASHIA AS BONSAI

This is a tropical plant with excel-lent potential as a shohin bonsai. The trunk of Nashia inaguensisacquires an almost fluted, old lookvery quickly. Rootage at groundlevel is consistently abundant andadds to the aged appearance. Itdoes not develop a trunk very

DDIn its natural habitat the shrub israngy. The secondary branchesappear in whorls and shoot outlong and straight. A full-grownNashia, with ideal growing condi-tions, reaches about7–8 feet in height.Fully matured in theground, the trunkdevelops to 2–3˝in diameter.

The leaves (approxi-mately 1⁄4˝ in length)when brushed ortouched exude a delightful, spicyaroma. The flowers are evensmaller than the leaves, white andvery close set in groups on thebranch. The flowers attract manypollinators, especially the Atalabutterfly. Fruit of the Bahamaberry is smaller still and developsin tiny orange to reddish-orangebead-like clusters.

Scale on the underside ofbranch is infected withAsterolecanium (pit scale).

Convention 2008 – An Overview

BY YOUR CONVENTION TEAM

The theme of the 2008 conven-tion is called “Si Diao” bonsai, which means silk thread carvingand was created by our head liningartist Cheng Cheng-Kung fromTaiwan. Another of our guestartists is our friend Sean Smithfrom Pennsylvania who is world-renowned for his daiza carvingabilities. Since we have so muchtalent in carving at this conven-tion, we thought it only fit to

provide our members with somematerial worthy of carving.

Our first workshop dedicated tocarving will be on Podocarpusmacrophylla and will be conductedby Cheng. These Podocarpus areunlike anything you have ever

t the 2007 convention, we wanted to set a new standard for the quality of the workshop material being offered. We wanted to provide quality work-

shop trees at a reasonable price, and judging by the fact the 100% ofthe workshops were sold out, I think we accomplished that goal. Ifthere was a complaint, it was that there wasn’t enough time to work onthe material using the advanced techniques that we were encouragingpeople to learn and use in the workshops. I think that you will see thatwe addressed this problem in 2008, so please read on!

seen in a conventionworkshop before. They are big. Wewere fortunate toget these largePodocarpus from ourfriend RobertPinder at DragonTree Bonsai in PalmCity. If you haven’tbeen there, you are truly missingout on some spectacular material. These Podocarpus are just scream-ing to be carved, so with the guid-ance of Cheng, that’s what you are going to do. You may ask, howcan we carve such large trees inthree hours, to which I answer, you can’t. So, you have a full day to carve to your hearts content, and I don’t mean two–tree hoursessions, I mean a full day –eight hours!

Our second workshop is with oneof Florida’s favorite artists, EdTrout. For Ed, we decided to getsome Bouganvillea glabra, andbeing that this convention’stheme is carving, it just wouldn’tbe appropriate to give Ed treesthat weren’t worthy of carving.

So, thanks to our friend ErikWigert of Wigert’s BonsaiNursery in Bokeelia, we haveextra large Bouganvilleas for you towork on. We brought several peo-ple over to Ed’s house to take pic-tures of them, and I swear theirjaws hit the ground when they sawthe trees. Its really nice to havepeople tell you to sign them up forthe workshop without knowingthe price. Oh, nearly forgot tomention that this workshop goesall day too! And I do mean all day– eight hours!!

Our third workshop, builds onwhat we learned from DavidDeGroot at the 2007 conventionand that is how to care for ourtools. Sean Smith will be conduct-ing a four-hour workshop on how
