S ince rejoining the hospital family in Jun e, I have been so impressed by

the steadfast friendship and support of our donors . I am heartened by the

generosity and enthusiasm of the hospital’s many friends at both campuses and

in the communities we faithfully serve.

At the heart of all we do is fulfilling the charitable n eeds of the hospital. The

philanthropic commitment of our donors is vital to providing each and ever y

patient with the highest level of care.

The support of our donors can be witn essed first-hand throughout the hospital. The more than 2,000

people who are listed on the following pages have helped support many vital projects at the hospital.

These include recent renovations and expansions of the Emergency Department at both New Britain

General and Bradley Memorial, and the cardiac catheterization lab; enhancements to existing programs

and services; and the creation of n ew programs. It is with great pride that we provide the people who

have helped make these projects possible with this public recognition of their thoughtful support.

As you read the stories in this issue, the true spirit of community is reflected in the charitable

support of our donors. You will see evidence of that spirit in the donors we have profiled. All of these

donors demonstrate their dedication to helping others and share how much their giving to The

Hospital of Central Connecticut means to them.

I look forward to continuing the philanthropic mission of the hospital and working together to

be part of the hospital’s promising future.

Sincerely,

Wendy M. Lux, CFRE

When Daniel North was a teen-ager in the mid 1930s , heoften took short walks from his home n ear Walnut Hill

Park to the hospital on the hill.He liked to visit his father, James S. North, who was pres-

ident of what was then known as New Britain Gen eralHospital. James was a retired industrialist when he wasnamed hospital president in 1935, and he had don e well forhimself and his family.

“My Great-Uncle Dan came from what you might calla privileged background,” says Ted Parsons of Plainville,Daniel North’s great-nephew. “But Dan’s father always taughthim to share what he had. He instilled in his son a greatdesire to help people. ”

And Dan North did — throughout his entire life, andeven after his passing.

Sadly, Dan died in November 2008 at age 89, after acourageous battle with cancer. A longtime supporter ofNew Britain General Hospital (now The Hospital of CentralConnecticut), Dan made arrangements before his death fora $100,000 planned gift to the hospital.

Dan’s was an unrestricted gift, which allows the hospitalto dedicate funds to the areas of greatest n eed and provide awide variety of services to patients and the community.

“With his donations to the hospital during his life and hisgenerous planned gift, Dan North left a legacy of health andwell-being to the community where he grew up ,” says WendyM. Lux, CFRE, executive director of Development at the hos-pital. “This is what makes planned gifts so special — theyallow a donor to make a difference in so many people’s livesfor generations to come.”

Dan always made an enormous difference in the lives ofothers, supporting many causes near and dear to his heartthroughout his life. After graduating from Avon Old F armsschool, he attended Trinity College, was a highly decoratedU.S. Coast Guard veteran and served on the Atlantic Coastduring World War II.

Following his military service, he edited papers inMystic and Cleburne, Tex., then moved to Litchfield in 1955,where he was the editor of the Litchfield Enquirer . There,he supported the Litchfield Community Center, LitchfieldLibrary, Clearwater and the Willington Library. An avidoutdoorsman who loved to hike and fish, Dan donated landto the town of Willington that’s been preserved in its naturalstate for future generations.

Dan never forgot his roots, sup-porting the New Britain Museum ofAmerican Art and New BritainGeneral Hospital during his life, along with Trinity College.

According to his family, DanielNorth was a true “Renaissance man,”who had a passion for literature, theenvironment, the arts, theater andmusic. He performed in local theater productions and was anavid runner, even into his later years. He often ran in roadraces, and was an early sponsor of the Litchfield Road Raceand the Goshen Turkey Trot.

But what Dan loved most of all was people — and theyloved him, according to his great-nephew.

“He was a much-revered man,” Ted says. “He had a great, sincere interest in all people. He told me, ‘You can alwayslearn something from others.’” C

About planned giving

As the name implies, planned gifts are donations plannedahead of time to suppor t a charitable organization. Someplanned gifts are made during the donor’s lifetime, but manybecome effective after the donor’s passing.

There are different ways to make a planned gift, including:• Making a bequest in your will to a charitable organization• Donating proceeds from a trust• Designating a charitable organization the beneficiar y of

a life insurance policy or retirement account• Donating real estate or other assets • Establishing a gift annuity, which provides the donor

an income during his or her lifetime, but allo ws for aneventual donation to a charitable organization.

Planned gifts offer many advantages, including reducedtaxes, and can help donors realize their personal philanthropicand financial goals, while providing lasting suppor t for TheHospital of Central Connecticut.

In its 68 years of giving, the Community F oundation ofGreater New Britain has helped improve countless lives .It has also helped save some. Two Community Foundation grants in recent years have

supported expansion and renovation of The Hospital ofCentral Connecticut’s Emergency Department, ensuring thehospital is ready, 24/7, to treat ever ything from cuts and bruis-es to heart attacks and other life-threatening emergencies .

“When we’re considering funding requests, two things weask are, ‘Will it benefit the entire community?’ and, ‘Is theproject meeting a need?’” says James G. Williamson,Community Foundation of Greater New Britain president.“There’s no question the Emergency Department projectsmet both criteria.”

Both Community Foundation grants for the ED, $150,000in 2004, and $50,000 in 2008, were challenge grants thatmatched hospital employee donations.

“The wonderful response the hospital received from itsemployees and physicians clearly motivated us to supportthese projects,” Williamson says.

So did the statistics on emergency department use. Locally and nationwide, more and more people have been

using EDs as their main source of care. Many of those peopleare uninsured or have insufficient health insurance coverage.

They’re the kinds of people the Community F oundation ofGreater New Britain was established to help. The CommunityFoundation’s founding purpose was—and continues to be —to provide a permanent “safety net” for the community.

The Community Foundation (then called the New BritainFoundation for Public Giving) started in 1941, with $30,000in gifts from The Stanley Works and New Britain Machine.

In 2004 its name was changed to the Community F oundationof Greater New Britain to reflect its service to four communi-ties: New Britain, Berlin, Plainville and Southington.

Now one of the oldest community foundations in thecountry, the Community Foundation of Greater New Britainhas assets totaling $26 million and awards n early $1 millionannually to support health, social services , education, artsand culture, civic affairs, community and economic develop-ment and the environment.

It does so through more than 150 different funds , includ-ing scholarship funds, discretionary funds and The CatalystFund, in which donors join to pool their resources and makegrants as a group. The Community Foundation also has 28

donor-advised funds, established by individuals, families orlocal businesses.

In 1997, Marie Gustin established a donor-advised fund,The Susie and Charles Gustin Memorial Fund, in memory ofher parents. The Fund donates to The Hospital of CentralConnecticut, Hospital for Special Care and education and artinitiatives in the city.

“I have very high regard for The Hospital of CentralConnecticut,” says Gustin, former New Britain Schoolssuperintendent and a member of the hospital’s board ofdirectors. “My parents received good care, and I’m glad thehospital was there when we needed it.”

She’s grateful for the Community Foundation’s assis-tance, which allowed her to establish a fund that supports hercommunity and honors her parents’ generous spirit.

“My parents were the sunshine in my life,” she says. “Hope-fully, through the grants we’ve made through the CommunityFoundation, we can bring rays of hope to other people.”

The Gustin Fund is one of several CommunityFoundation donor-advised funds that benefit The Hospital ofCentral Connecticut, along with other local organizations.

These funds highlight one of the unique features — andstrengths — of community foundations, Williamson says. Inaddition to supporting organizations in need, community foun-dations provide expertise and assistance to donors – ever ythingfrom research to help with legal and financial matters .

“We’re like the Swiss Army Knife of philanthropy. Wehave all these little tools we can use to help donors ,”Williamson says.

That assistance is highly personalized, he adds.“Before any grants are made, we have long conversations

with donors about their intent. Some donors know exactlywhere they want their money to go; others ask us to helpidentify a need in the community and which organizationsare addressing it.”

Recently, the Community Foundation was contacted by adonor who had left New Britain, but still wanted to help fam-ilies in need here. After talking at length with the donor ,Community Foundation staff did some research and matchedthe donor with the Mayor’s Work Plan to End Homelessnessin New Britain.

“That’s what we do at the Community F oundation,”Williamson says. “We connect donors who care with causesthat matter.” C

An educator for 35 years, Bruce Rudolph taught manysubjects, including math, science, English, and probably

a bit about life, to countless 5th, 6th and 7th graders in theWallingford school system.

His wife, Katherine, also a long-time teacher, specializedin helping children with learning disabilities at Thomas HookerElementary School in Meriden. Altruistic in nature, Katherin eliked doing things for people, Rudolph recalls , having coordi-nated school activities like student council and talent shows .

Her penchant for giving and their passion for teachingare woven together in a gift to The Hospital of CentralConnecticut (HCC) that will both educate and ideally helpsave lives from diseases like ovarian cancer , from whichKatherine died in 2007 at age 54.

With a lead gift of $250,000 from Bruce Rudolph in 2008in memory of his wife, the Katherine Ann King RudolphHereditary Cancer Genetics Program aims to identify adultpatients at increased risk for cancer due to their gen eticmakeup. It empowers them, through counseling, to makedecisions regarding possible treatment. Led by HCC, the pro-gram is part of a regional gen etic counseling and testing pro-gram begun in October that includes Hartford Hospital andSt. Francis Hospital and Medical Center. The fund, whichincludes a state grant and has a $1 million goal, will help pro -vide access to genetic counseling for patients in centralConnecticut and greater Hartford.

Patients with a history of two or more cancers breast, ovar-ian or colon, or a family histor y strong in certain cancers arepotential candidates for counseling and gene (blood) testing.

“Information is empowering, it seems to me,” saysRudolph, who notes the importance in coupling counselingwith genetic testing. “Counseling and genetic testing seem, absent a test for certain cancers , to be the best way to proceedin breaking the mystery of breast, ovarian or colon cancer.”

Rudolph views the lead gift as an extension of his wife’spersonality. “She was a ver y purposeful person and much ofwhat she spent her time doing had somebody else’s ben efitin mind,” he says. “This program continues her willingnessto help other people and will, hopefully, continue in perpetuity.”

This gift follows one by the Rudolphs in late 2006 whenthey established the James S. Hoffman, M.D., Gyn ecologicOncology Fund to provide financial support for the Obstetricsand Gynecology — Gynecologic Oncology program not fund-ed through the hospital’s annual operating budget. This mayinclude funding for research, patient treatment programs ,

physician and staff education and patient education. The first gift was made while Katherin e was in treatment,

following her August 2005 cancer diagnosis. Previously both-ered by periodic bloating and other abdominal discomforts ,she felt something hard in her abdomen during a trip toFlorida, recalls Rudolph. After tests suggested ovarian cancer ,Katherine’s gynecologist sent her to James Hoffman, M.D.,director of the Division of Gynecologic Oncology at HCC’sGeorge Bray Cancer Center. Ovarian cancer was confirmedafter Hoffman surgically removed a tumor. Rudolph recallsthat Hoffman remained hopeful and encouraged Katherine, who had begun chemotherapy, to enroll in clinical treatmenttrials. Ultimately, she took part in four trials , experiencingperiods of cancer remission with each trial.

Having recuperated from surgery,Katherine returned to work full-time inJanuary 2006, assuming an administra-tive position at Thomas Hooker, whereshe remained, while in treatment, through May 2007.

“She was an extremely strong personand it really showed in what she wentthrough,” says Rudolph.

“We were here (HCC) many times,”including about five times on an emer -gency basis, he recalls. “There wasn’t atime we came here the hospital wasn’tcompletely prepared.”

Rudolph is grateful to Dr. Hoffman and HCCstaff, including President and Chief Executive OfficerLaurence A. Tanner for his wife’s care.

“We are very grateful to Mr. Rudolph for his generosityand for his insight into the creation of a program which willhelp many families for a long time to come,” says Hoffman.

“The gift is going where I think Katherin e would want itto go,” says Rudolph. “It’s Dr. Hoffman’s footprints that putthe program together.”

Your Development Staff By giving to The Hospital of Central Conn ecticut, you're helping your neighbors,

your loved ones, maybe even yourself.

Donations from the community ensure the hospital is always ready to deliver the

highest-quality care to the people who n eed us.

Your gift helps the hospital purchase n ew equipment and technology; offer the most

advanced medical care and services; and educate staff on the latest developments and

techniques in patient care.

Leave a Lasting Legacy

Our 1899 Society recognizes individuals and families who have plann ed to make

a gift through their will or other estate plans to ben efit our hospital and have

informed us of their intention during their lifetime.

Thank you for remembering The Hospital of Central Conn ecticut in your will,

trust, or through a gift of life insurance. We are grateful for your vision and for your

generosity.

Recent planned gifts have helped our hospital to deliver state of the art care to

the Central Connecticut region. Some recent projects made possible by plann ed

gifts include:

• Open MRI at the Bradley Memorial campus

• Novalis knifeless surgery at our George Bray Cancer Center

• Increased medical education funds for physicians and nurses for their

continuing education

• Several generous estate gifts providing the hospital with unrestricted dollars

applied to areas of the hospital with the greatest n eed.

For information on giving to The Hospital of Central Conn ecticut, or to receive our

free magazine contact the Development Office, (860) 224-5567.
