Would you like to see more trees along your streets, downtown envi-ronments, or in

your neighborhood parks? Now is the time to make those trees a reality by talking with your township or borough supervisor and encouraging them to take advantage of the statewide tree planting initiative called TreeVitalize. This user friendly program funds half the cost of tree plantings.

Dauphin County Parks began administering the grant program in 2009 and since has assisted with funding tree plantings for eight municipalities total-ing $41,000. They included: City of Harrisburg, Millersburg Borough, Halifax Township, Hummel-stown Borough, Susquehanna Township, and Derry Township in Dauphin County; and Penn Township in Perry County. Call Chris Rebert at 717-221-0292 x 5 to inquire about TreeVitalize in your area.

Wildlife Sightings• An immature red-tailed hawk has been seen

around the bird feeders. It sits on a tree limb that hangs out over the Paxton Creek. It watches the gray squirrels that frequent the feeders.

• A ring-necked pheasant was seen crossing Indus-trial Road and entering the canal area along the Towpath Trail.

• Red fox have been seen occasionally in the Park.

2011 Wildwood Lecture Series ScheduleThis winter, the theme of the Wildwood Lecture Series is Tools for Sustainability. The public is invited to the bimonthly Tuesday evening lectures which are held at 7:00 p.m. The lecture schedule can be found on the back page or at www.wildwoodlake.org.

The Wildwood Lecture Series has been underwritten by the Friends of Wildwood with the support of a generous donation from The Hep Foundation.

Wildwood Park Featured in Patriot News Described as “acres of sparkling lake, miles of trails and home to a “Don’t Miss” nature center”, Wildwood Park was featured in a fall Patriot News article about local places to enjoy a healthy walk. Featured along with Gifford Pinchot and Pine Grove Furnace State Parks, York Heritage Rail Trail and the Capital Area Greenbelt, Wildwood Park was recognized for its variety of trails and board-walks, picturesque foliage and its proximity to Harrisburg.

New Park RegulationSharp declines in the populations of amphibians and reptiles within Wildwood Park has led to the decision that no amphibians or reptiles may be removed from the Park. This includes all waterways and land area within the park boundaries. This policy is in accordance with the County of Dauphin Ordinances and with the consent of the PA Fish and Boat Commission.

Wildwood’s Newest Intern-Shane QuakerFor the next 5 months, Wildwood Park will once again host a student intern from Shippensburg

University’s master’s program in Organizational Leadership and Develop-ment. Shane Quaker is from Camp Hill and follows the successful 2009 internship of another Shippensburg graduate student.

The goal of Shane’s internship will be to explore the aspects of volunteerism at Wildwood Park. What better way to learn about the volunteers than for him to become a volunteer himself. He will be partici-pating in all aspects of the Park and Nature Center from the front desk to programs to the monthly volunteer work day.

As part of his studies he will be conducting a survey of the Wildwood’s volunteers to explore the reasons that folks volunteer their time and effort. His research and analysis will help Wildwood Park to enhance the volunteer program.

Volunteer Work Day Coordinators Initiated in the 1990s by long time volunteer and friend of Wildwood Allen Marshall, the Volunteer Work Day continues with much enthusiasm from participants, staff, and most of all the Volunteer Work Day Co-ordinators. From March through November, the Volunteer Work Day is held on the second Satur-day of each month. The Work Days are an opportunity for all to spend time in the beautiful park, work outside, and help Wildwood’s park and habitat enhancement projects.

In 2010, the Volunteer Work Days totaled 112 participants. Projects included gardening for wild-life, landscaping, litter clean up, trail improve-ments, plantings and more. Special recognition goes to Volunteer Work Day Coordinators Pat George, John Maxwell and Linda Hardy (no photo avail-able). It is the leadership, knowledge, dedication, and talent of these three volunteers that enables the Work Day’s success.
