Tracy understands the meaning of hard work and doesn’t mind it – in fact, she welcomes the chal-lenges of her job as a medical assistant at Takoma Surgical because the work feels meaningful to her. She is the first healing presence patients encounter when they call the office or walk in for appointments. And whatever her career future holds, she says, “I just can’t see myself not help-ing people no matter what kind of work I do.”

Challenges are not new to Tracy. She is a single mother raising four children ages 6, 8, 9 and 15. Her daily juggling act starts early in the morn-ing and ends 18 or 19 hours later. For four out of five work days, she comes home after a full day of work, has an hour to see her kids and get them organized, and then heads out to Prince George’s Community College. She returns between 10 and 10:30 p.m., spends a little time with her oldest, focuses on chores like making school lunches for the next day, and then turns to her school books until 1 a.m.

“I’ve learned so much already,” Tracy said of

her experience so far. “And when I leave school late at night, instead of being exhausted, I leave happy and excited!”

Having come into contact with hundreds of pa-tients undergoing chemotherapy, radiation and surgery for cancer, Tracy’s dream now is to help cancer patients by working as a tumor registrar. The ACE Program is helping Tracy realize her dream.

To learn more about the program or how you can make a donation to support the ACE Pro-gram, please contact the Washington Adventist Hospital Foundation at (301) 891-6920 or [email protected].

Thanks to a generous $50,000 grant from the Greater Washington Workforce Development Collaborative of the Community Foundation for the National Capital Region, Washington Adventist Hospital established the Adventist Career Enhancement (ACE) Program. ACE offers qualified employees the opportunity to work with career coaches and mentors. The coach works individually with employees to create a personal career map. Career maps clearly show the opportunities and requirements for advancement in a healthcare field. Mentors support employees throughout their journey to further their careers.

Hospital employees continue working in their current position while obtaining the education, training and experience they need to advance their careers. In most instances, employees enroll in career-oriented community college courses with tuition support from Adventist HealthCare. Courses might also include English for Speakers of Other Languages, college-readiness courses, or on-site training programs. Tracy Rivers’ story below is one example of a Washington Adventist Hospital employee embarking on a journey as a participant in the Hospital’s ACE Program.

While we anticipate there will soon be increased activity by the Maryland Health Care Commis-

sion on Washington Adventist Hospital’s Certificate of Need application to relocate the Hospital to White Oak, I would like to take this opportunity to share some important news about the continued use plans for our Takoma Park campus.

The Hospital is once again partnering with Mary’s Center, a federally qualified, comprehensive health center, to expand health-care access to the underserved by opening a second clinic for the communities we serve. Mary’s Center serves more than 3,000 low-income and uninsured patients each year from Mont-gomery and Prince George’s counties, regardless of ability to pay. The number of patients is projected to double when the new primary care clinic opens on our campus late this year.

We will also work together to develop a comprehen-sive plan to allow Mary’s Center to operate a primary and urgent care center on our Takoma Park campus as part of the Village of Education, Health and Wellbeing once the Hospital relocates.

In addition to primary and urgent care services, the Village’s health-care offerings will include inpatient

and outpatient rehabilitation services, and a behavioral health clinic, to name a few. We also continue to work with Washington Adventist University to plan for the utilization of Hospital space for classrooms and other Uni-versity needs. Through these key part-nerships and others, the Village will not only provide health-care and wellness services, but education and research opportunities for the community as well.

Furthermore, the combined relocated Hospital in White Oak and the continued use of the Takoma Park campus will allow us to strengthen the region’s health care infrastructure and expand access to quality health-care in the communities we serve.

For more information and ways to show your support for the relocation of Washington Adventist Hospital, visit www.expandedhealthaccess.com.

Thank you for your continued support. Sincerely,

Jere D. Stocks President,Washington Adventist Hospital

Dear Friends,

Page 2 Connected Winter 2011

Washington Adventist Hospital Foundation held its first Holiday Reception on December 15 for

donors and prospective donors. Guests mingled with Hospital President Jere Stocks, Senior Executive Officer Joyce Portela and other Hospital and Foundation staff.

Many posed questions regarding the relocation of the Hospital to the White Oak area as well as the redevelop-ment of the Takoma Park campus as they signed letters of support of the Hospital, which demonstrates the community’s continued support.

To be a part of the next Holiday Reception or other events, please contact Dawn Brown at (301) 891-6181 or [email protected].

Washington Adventist Hospital employees, physi-cians and visitors gathered for the annual Tree of

Goodwill Ceremony on December 15.

The ceremony was about giving to those less fortunate through the Tree of Goodwill Charity Care Funds – the Helping Hands Fund and the Cancer Patient Assistance Fund – which provide assistance to many of our pa-tients when they need it most.

Although the Tree of Goodwill Ceremony is over, the two Tree of Goodwill Charity Care Funds need replen-ishment year round. To join in giving to charity care, please contact Chris Simons at (301) 891-6923 or [email protected].

Planned Giving Today

Charitable giving presents an opportunity for families and individuals to support a wide range

of organizations, including social, educational, medical, environmental and religious causes. Philanthropic gifts to qualified organizations may also provide significant tax and estate planning benefits to the donor.

Charitable giving comes in many forms, often shaped by the needs and aspirations of the donor. Some of the most common forms are as follows:

Family GivingFamily giving allows families to support causes to which they are drawn as well as foster a sense of philanthropy amongst their children. Families often discuss how to allocate charitable contributions and may even create a mission statement outlining philanthropic goals that can be passed to future generations.

Entrepreneurial InfluenceIn the 1990s, venture philanthropy came into prominence as a means for retired entrepreneurs and early retirees to become more involved with nonprofit organizations, not only by providing financial support, but also by using their professional skills to shape the goals of those organizations.

Inheritors as PhilanthropistsInheritors of significant wealth often choose to become involved in philanthropy. Children of wealthy families may find tremendous fulfillment pursuing careers in public life or philanthropic causes, often helping to carry on a family legacy.

Charitable Giving VehiclesMany different strategies exist for charitable giving, each with various purposes and advantages. Choosing the most advantageous strategy for your goals is critical.

Some commonly known charitable vehicles include:Outright gifts of cash or appreciated, publicly traded securities are the most basic. The donor can make a gift to any 501c3 charitable organization, which includes non-profit social services, religious, educational or scientific organizations.

Split gifts allow the donor to make a charitable gift, but still benefit from the gifted assets. Many split gifts are in the form of a trust. The charitable gift passing to these irrevocable trusts may qualify as a current deduction for income tax purposes and may not be taxable to your estate. The more common types include:

Charitable remainder trusts provide either a variable or fixed payment stream to the donor, or to a designated beneficiary, for a period of years or for the beneficiary’s lifetime. After the beneficiary’s death, the remainder is distributed to one or more charities selected by the donor.

With charitable lead trusts, the donor places property in a trust that provides a payment stream to a charity for a period of years. Upon completion of the specified period, the remaining trust property is transferred to the donor’s ultimate non-charity beneficiary.

Tax Treatment of Charitable GivingFrom a tax perspective, charitable giving vehicles have varying degrees of advantages and disadvantages. Your tax, estate planning or financial advisor can help determine the best approach for your circumstances. Consideration should be given to all forms of tax (including capital gains taxes, income taxes, and gift and estate taxes).

Patient Perspectives I was treated in the Washington Adventist Hospital Emergency Room late last year. The staff who treated me were all wonder-ful, but what impressed me the most was what I witnessed while waiting in Triage: A frightened, crying child came in hold-ing a towel drenched in blood around his hand. The staff greeted this child with such compassion and kindness that his fears seemed to disappear and he finally smiled as they ushered him to the treatment area. – C.P.
