2013  Season

Page 2: Winter 2013 Patriot News...November 27-29, 2013 Early Dismissal at 1:25 p.m. December 11, 2013 Parent Meetings at 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. December 18, 2013 Winter Break December 23,

Missing School = Missing Out Did You Know? What Can You Do?

Your child can suffer academically if they miss 10 percent (about 17 days) of school. That can be just two days a month, and that can happen before you know it.

You can set up homework and bedtime routines. Make sure that when the lights go out, so do the cell phones, video games and computers.

It doesn’t matter if these absences are excused or unexcused. They all represent lost time in the classroom and a lost opportunity for your child to learn.

Try not to schedule medical and dental appointments during the school day. If absolutely necessary, schedule appointments for after 10:00 a.m.

By 6th grade, chronic absence is a leading warning sign that a student will drop out.

Don’t let your child stay home unless they are truly sick. Keep in mind that complaints of a stomachache or headache can be a sign of anxiety and not a reason to stay home.

Absences can affect the whole classroom if the teacher has to slow down learning to help children catch up.

Stay on top of your child’s social contacts. Peer pressure can lead to skipping, while students without many friends can feel isolated.

Attendance is an important skill that will help that will help your child graduate and do well in college and at work.

Set an example for your child. Show him or her that attendance matters to you and that you won’t allow an absence unless someone is truly sick.

Don’t Get Sidelined by the Flu Tips from Your School Nurse, Ms. Canga

1. Common sense can help you avoid the flu

• Practice Healthy Habits – Wash your hands often with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds to help prevent germs from spreading. Also, avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth, because the virus can spread when your hands touch surfaces that are infested with germs, Finally, if you think you’ve been exposed to the flu, talk to your parents about seeing a doctor.

• Mind Your Manners – Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing and sneezing, and throw away your used tissues.

• What’s Mine is Mine, What’s Yours is Yours – Don’t share drinks, water bottles, eating utensils or cell phones with friends.

2. If Possible, Get a Flu Shot 3. Is it Cold or Flu? – Know How to Tell the Difference

• If you have a stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat and a hacking cough, you probably have a cold.

• If you have a high fever, severe headache, muscle and body aches, extreme tiredness and a dry cough, you probably have the flu.

Patriots Are Rewarded for Great Attendance

An incentive program designed to encourage good attendance each day has been implemented at Revere Middle School. The program is called “JEANS.” For every day that each grade level has attendance at 96% or greater, they earn a letter in the word “JEANS”. Once the grade level has had 5 days of attendance greater than 96 precent (spelling out J-E-A-N-S), they will earn a Jeans Day. Jeans days will be announced the day before on the announcements during Home Room. Posters are located in the cafeteria with the progress for each grade level. The rules for Jeans Days are as follows: • Jeans cannot have rips or holes

in them • Students may not wear leggings

or jeggings • Jeans of any solid color may be

worn

Reminder about Excuse Notes

If your child is absent from school, please remember to provide an excuse note for the absence. This can be turned in to the main office up to three days after the absence occurred.
