Winter 2013 I Volume 5 I Issue 3 ISSUE INSIDE THIS Ward 7 Update From Councillor Mairin Loewen 2 Snow Day In Stonebridge 3 Now, a few quick neighborhood updates: Road conditions continue to be a factor as our community grows and the ice melts. The city has communicated that Hunter Road is slated to be paved by June with Cornish Road following in July. Preston Avenue (and the commercial developments surrounding it) should be completed by the early Fall. Stonebridge will be gaining another entrance/exit off of Victor Road onto Highway 11 by 2015. Construction will begin this year. The city will be breaking ground at Alexander MacGillivray Young Park on a community recreational unit and spray pad in 2014. Future additions to the site could potentially include an outdoor skating rink. We are planning a fun “snow day” taking place in March. Details found inside this newsletter! The summer months will prove that Stonebridge is the place to be with outdoor activities, family-focused events and (finally) adult-oriented festivities planned. Message from President Brad Flavell There might still be a few feet of snow on the ground, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel – winter’s icy grip likely only has a few weeks left over our fair city. We experienced a small temperature reprieve in January that came alongside damaging winds (pro-tip: make note of your garbage/recycling bin’s serial number and write your house number somewhere on the back!) but the “chinook” was certainly a pleasant change from arctic conditions.

2 I Stonebridge News

It may not seem like it’s time to start making plans for summer, but it will be here in no time (I hope). In response to requests from residents, the city is expanding its Green Cart program this year. This program allows for residents to have their leaves, grass, and yard waste collected and composted by the city during the summer and early fall. In previous years this program had limited number of subscriptions, but this year everyone who wants to participate will be able to do so. Subscriptions cost $55 and can be arranged by visiting www.saskatoon.ca. Apply by April 1st in order to avoid delay in your first collection.

Stonebridge residents who use Transit Route 17 will know that there have been problems with reliability on this route and that the route struggles with capacity during peak hours. As a result the city is proposing changes to Route 17 that will alleviate these problems. Watch for updates about these improvements in the months ahead.

Ward 7 I Update

Hello Stonebridge,Finally, I am happy to report that progress is being made on the Victor Road and Highway 11 interchange. Design of the interchange is currently underway and construction will begin this spring, with completion of the project slated for 2015. In addition, city administration is presently investigating the viability of adding a south-bound ramp to the project.

As always, I welcome your questions and comments about any city or neighbourhood issue. Contact me at 306-229-5298 or by email at [email protected].

Take care,Mairin Loewen

Stonebridge has many uncontrolled intersections (no stop signs, yield signs, traffic lights or police directing traffic). Do you know your “right of way” when approaching an uncontrolled intersection?

take our quiz! (Answers on page 7)

Please remember, “all drivers have a moral and legal responsibility to avoid collisions. If you have the right of way at an intersection and a driver refuses to yield to you, you are responsible from a safety standpoint to avoid a collision, rather than insist upon your right of way.”Source: SGI (www.sgi.sk.ca)
