Mailings move to paper envelopes sourcedfrom sustainable forestry

Mailing with plastic wrap is a clear areafor improvementWith a worldwide subscriber database for itspublications, one organisation was acutelyaware of the issues associated with exportingpolywrap. It could not be taken for grantedthat subscribers receiving the publicationswould have access to recycling facilities.

Paper envelopes were their preferred choicedespite a cost premium. This was becausepaper naturally degrades in almost any refusefacility. It’s so easy to recycle, and if from asustainable source, it potentially has thelowest carbon footprint of the eco friendlyoptions available. This is why this organisationhas moved its mailings from polythene topaper envelopes from sustainable forestry.

The BBC series Blue Planet II highlighted the impact of plastics in the world’s oceans. This has intensified public pressure against single use plastics and has prompted manypublishers to review the use of polywrap in their magazine mailings.

Spatial Global held a Free Incoterms 2020 Changes Workshop to a packed roomof businesses from a wide variety of sectors, all of whom trade internationally.

The Freight team explained the various areas whereanyone trading internationally, whether import orexport, could possibly get caught out.

“I thought Rachel was a great communicator and really explained the changesand relevant shipping process in a way which engaged at every level in theroom. It was apparent at the Q&A session, that the Spatial Global Freight team are very knowledgeable and in-depth. It was my third IncotermsWorkshop and I thought it was the best!”

Chris Plant Divisional Director at Birmingham Chamber Group

Workshop a huge success!

Incoterms® 2020 come into force on 1st January 2020 – the workshop helpedexplain the impact of the changesThe workshop audience was a mix of importersand exporters who were taken through the 11rules, the changes and how the changes wouldimpact any business when importing or exportingin 2020. Rachel Morley explained how one rulewas renamed; 7 rules were applicable to anymode of transport; 4 rules to be only used for seaand inland waterways and the rule subgroups E,F, C and D into which the Rules had beensubdivided. The Incoterms® are more technicalthan most using them understand and notgetting them right can have expensiveconsequences. Rachel explained, it’s far easier tohave a face to face conversation if in doubt, because it’s the conversation and anecdotaldiscussion which creates the learning.

Be careful to ensure you know whichversion you are usingA key takeaway was that these terms are to bephased in, and it’s expected that it will take 12-18 months for most Incoterms® users to switchover to Incoterms® 2020. This could mean thereis the possibility of one party using the existingIncoterms® whilst the other specifies the 2020updated terms.

Incoterms® users do not have to switch over toIncoterms® 2020. Users can, if they clearlyspecify it in the contract, carry on usingIncoterms® 2010 if they want to. This means that

if a contract is entered into on or after 1 January2020 then it is likely that Incoterms® 2020 shallapply unless the contract says otherwise. Youcan start using Incoterms® 2020 before 1January 2020. If a contract specifies Incoterms®

2020 then they shall apply.

Incoterms® 2020 are not legally binding, unlessthey are incorporated into an agreement byexpress reference to the specific Incoterm. This is why it is essential to state the version ofIncoterms® used, otherwise a dispute could ariseas to the correct version and lead to a differentoutcome to that intended.

Want to attend future Incoterms®
