2 THE BULLETIN SPRING 2020

On March 31, OFSAA President Nick Rowe announced the cancellation of all spring championships and festivals due to the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in province-wide school closures. This followed the March 13 announcement that the hockey and curling championships had been cancelled.

The pandemic is without question a situation none of us has experienced before. We’ve even learned new terms and behaviours such as “flatten the curve” and “social distancing”. Both are now common terms most people didn’t even know until just weeks ago.

The 1918-1920 Spanish flu pandemic is the most recent rival to COVID-19. It took an estimated 50,000 lives in Canada, with most victims being between 20 and 40 years of age. The flu hit during World War I and its global spread was hastened by the movement of troops.

Archives of Ontario has produced a grade 10-12 lesson on the Spanish flu. This document contains some interesting information, including an October 12, 1918 influenza precautions poster from the Ontario Board of Health which suggests it was opposed to the closure of “places of assemblage” such as schools, although such decisions rested with municipal health officers. The Board of Health claimed, “There is no great danger of spreading the disease,...if these places are well-ventilated.”

The poster also states, “In cities and towns it is impossible to prevent children from co-mingling in the streets and playgrounds where they are without the supervision found in schools. Hence closing schools is more effective in country districts. Closing schools is economically wasteful, and usually has no influence on the course of an outbreak of a disease like influenza. Children are less likely to infect one another in the class-room than in the home or on the playground.” It goes on to say that municipal

health officers “should not be moved from their duty by public clamor, to adopt fussy and ill-advised measures, which only serve to irritate the public and accomplish no useful purpose.” Safe to say that times certainly have changed.

There were, however, some public measures put in place to limit the spread of the disease. In many areas these were ignored when celebrations broke out at the announcement of Armistice and the end of World War I.

On the sporting front, the 1919 Stanley Cup Final between the Seattle Metropolitans and Montreal Canadiens was cancelled because of the pandemic. Just hours prior to the deciding game, the series was called off after five Montreal players and their manager were admitted to hospital. Days later, Joe Hall of the Canadiens passed from the disease. The inscription on the Stanley Cup for 1919 reads, SERIES NOT COMPLETED.

This year’s cancellation of OFSAA spring events is unfortunate for the approximately 10,000 student-athletes and their coaches who would have had the opportunity to represent their schools at these events. It is regrettable as well for the convenors and committee members who had volunteered their time and had been planning diligently for over a year. Their work is truly appreciated. Volunteers are the driving force behind school sports and we extend a sincere thank you to each and every one of the volunteers across the province.

As we head towards the end of the school year, we eagerly look forward to when we can safely get back to the classroom and to when sport returns to our school communities.

Please stay safe and healthy.

CIOS is a program developed by the Coaching Association of Canada and the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations to give teacher-coaches and community volunteers the special skill-set they need to coach effectively in the school environment. CIOS also provides 3 PD points to maintain NCCP certification.

Let’s look to educate more volunteers, teachers and coaches about OFSAA and we can do that through the CIOS! Online courses are available in both english and french. Please contact Shamus Bourdon at [email protected] or 416-426-7440.

Coaching in Ontario Schools (CIOS)

This is a joint venture between OFSAA and the Canadian Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association that promotes, supports and trains existing and aspiring Athletic Directors/Coordinators.

OFSAA, in cooperation with the CIAAA, delivered our first ever online course for Athletic Directors during the month of February. CREATING YOUR ATHLETIC HANDBOOK (602C) was delivered over three nights with each session 1 hour in duration. Participants then had time to work on their handbooks between sessions and bring back questions and ideas to instructors and fellow participants for the next class.

Ten Athletic Directors from across Canada brought varying levels of experience to the course and they were joined by three OFSAA/CIAAA trained instructors. This same course is also available over two days on June 3 and 10, 2020.

Given the success of this format, along with the hope that things in education will return to normal in September, look for online and in person course offerings from our OFSAA/CIAAA trained staff in 2020-21. If you have further questions, please contact Jim Barbeau at [email protected] and please visit the CIAAA website at www.ciaa.ca for additional information.

As an educational organization working for students, OFSAA is led by volunteer teacher-coaches and school administrators. Our longstanding motto is “Education through School Sport”.

The physical, social and academic benefits of participating in school sports are important components in a student-athlete’s development. Also, educational studies indicate teacher-coaches feel that coaching contributes positively to their overall job satisfaction.

Student-athletes rely on teachers to coach sports in their schools. Without teachers taking these volunteer roles, school sport opportunities would not be available and a vital aspect of student development would be lost.

As a leader in school sport, OFSAA takes an important role in coach training and recruitment.

We have developed two initiatives that will benefit students as they move forward into the educational community.

First, over the past several years, we have delivered our Coaching in Ontario Schools (CIOS) course to university

students in a number of faculties of education and the feedback has been very positive. We would again like to offer this opportunity to university students for the 2020-21 school year. If you are aware of a Faculty of Education department staff member that may be interested in this presentation, please contact OFSAA Assistant Director Shamus Bourdon at [email protected] or 416-426-7440.

Secondly, a new initiative that serves as a promotional campaign to inspire new teachers into the coaching ranks began in 2019-20. To help accomplish this, we developed a short presentation specifically designed for students in Ontario’s faculties of education. We plan to conduct more presentations for this particular group of students moving forward. Again, if you have a contact in the faculties of education and feel that they would benefit from our presentation, please contact OFSAA Assistant Director Denise Perrier at [email protected] or 416-426-7436.

Here are just a couple of examples of the tremendous work being done on this project by school administrators.

10 THE BULLETIN SPRING 2020

Positive Ways To Help Students Cope With National Health CrisisBy Dr. Steve Amaro on April 15, 2020 Source: The National Federation of State High School Associations’ High School Today Magazine

Every generation experiences an historic negative moment at some point in time – some are just worse than others. In previous generations, it may have been the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, explosion of the Space Shuttle Challenger or the 9/11 terrorist attacks. In these instances, the disruption of school and personal life had real effects with school closures and substantial changes in the way students and their families conducted their daily lives.

Today, we are in the midst of an international health crisis with the spread of the Coronavirus, otherwise known as COVID-19, and it has had a profound impact on high school activity programs, including the postponement and, in some cases, cancelation of entire high school athletic seasons.

While it is important that adult leaders take care of themselves and their families during these times, it is also important to continue to provide leadership and connection to their students and these young people who look not only to their families, but also their school officials for guidance.

Acknowledge and Validate the DisruptionIt is nothing short of remarkable to see how a national climate can change with just one unfortunate event. Most people, let alone high school athletes, have never encountered such a change of national magnitude as we currently face.

It is important to remember that athletes choose to be part of

athletic programs, and as leaders of these elective activities, coaches play a significant role as their words and actions carry tremendous influence and many students will seek them out for comfort and understanding. In normal times, students struggle with understanding that athletics is a privilege rather than a right, but now is a vital time for coaches to share this perspective with their athletes.

Everyone loves to play sports and push their physical and intellectual limits, but coaches need to reinforce that current safety measures need to be upheld for everyone. High schools can only allow athletics, activities and even academic classes in safe environments. Coaches have the responsibility to support the school, state and national messages and acknowledge that this important health crisis has led to the disruption of school sports.

Coaches, especially those in-season coaches, need to put competitiveness in perspective. In the initial days of this crisis, there were reports of students gathering to practice their sports without coaches, overlooking the national – and in some cases – state association recommendations for safety. Some of these students may be looking for ways to escape the overwhelming saturation of the daily news cycle, but coaches have an opportunity to provide written supports via text or social media to encourage students to follow safety recommendations regarding social distancing. No upcoming

Sfuture competition is worth the risk of life itself.

When schools assess activities and even attendance and find that safety is in question, coaches need to explain and validate that such decisions are not made lightly. Equally important is for coaches to send a consistent message that can be supported by school and district leadership. They need to have open lines of communication with their athletic directors and school administration so that they can support their students in this trying time.

Share and Encourage Plans for Individual Physical ActivityThere is no single factor for how long students lives will be disrupted due to COVID-19, but it is clear that all students, regardless of ability, appreciate and benefit from routine; the fabric of student-athletes’ days are woven with specific practice and game times. Although most coaches care deeply about their sports, one of the goals of high school athletic participation is to build a foundation for students to have lifetime physical fitness habits. It is this message that coaches can support in creating plans and sharing physical exercise plans as these plans support physical and psychological health.

Students will have questions regarding how they will navigate their lives, but for now they may ask when they will return to school, what happens to their games not played or dances they missed, or for those seniors, how do they select the school they will attend in the fall if they can’t even see the campus. Although coaches may not have answers for these questions, they can provide clarity and perspective by creating and sharing individual activities through text, video conference and on social media. Whether it’s a half hour of yoga or aerobic exercise, or even circuit training with household items, providing activities for students to engage

in individually can reduce their stress levels, promote mental health, and keep them fit for their eventual return to school and team activities.

Promote Time to Reflect, Connect and Be ThankfulFar too often, students and even the adults who run student activities can become so focused on completing daily tasks that they forget to reflect and appreciate what goes on around them. Although the COVID-19 virus has disrupted our lives, it has also given us an opportunity to be thankful for all we do have. We have seen examples on the international stage.

In Italy, there were videos of families in an apartment building who could not see each other, but sang their national anthem outside on balconies, while in Spain a fitness instructor conducted a fitness class on the roof of a building and those in the neighboring buildings joined the challenge. In each instance, the people participating had to observe social distance and could not see other participants, but it revealed the connection and appreciation we can all share in activities and physical exercise. The power of human connection reveals itself in creative ways and even when we are physically separated, we can find ways to build community.

In those states where families are under order to stay at home, school leaders can encourage students to engage in family activities. This could start with something as simple as a board game at night, but it could also evolve into a physically engaging cross-training activity with siblings and other immediate family members. Most students never get the chance to fully appreciate the athletic lives their parents lead and even fewer get an opportunity to teach or coach others. Supporting students to engage with their families

gives them a greater understanding of themselves and those who support them.

We Will OvercomeThe scariest question that all of us face is when will this national pandemic end? Although no one knows for sure what the future will hold, we can reassure students that there will be a time when they return to school and life will regain some normalcy. It’s important to let our students know that although we all will face inconvenience, hardship and even some level of fear during this time, we will overcome this national health crisis and be stronger for the experience.

Schools across the province this year have been providing their students with new, fun activities through their ‘Try Day’ programs. Students also had the opportunity to contribute to the organization and leadership of Try Day. New, non-traditional sports and physical activities motivate students and help them enjoy participating and thus increase their level of fitness.

New fitness equipment, inclusive games of low organization (challenging rope climbs, exciting outdoor adventures, prep games for other sports) and all activities engaged students of all grades and skill levels. Once again, thanks to the Ministry of Education as over 125 secondary schools received up to $700 to conduct these special days. School programs can adapt to demographic changes, provide more inclusive programs, and enable as many students as possible to be active.

Character Athlete Award 2019-20OFSAA’s Character Athlete Award celebrates the efforts of the exceptional student-athletes in Ontario who best exemplify the characteristics that OFSAA is founded on.

Nominations come to the OFSAA office detailing the exceptional character of student-athletes across Ontario, inspiring those around them with their involvement on the playing field and in the classroom, in both school and community.

Selecting just one male and one female recipient of the OFSAA Character Athlete Award is never easy, but the following two individuals stood out for their commitment to OFSAA’s values of leadership, equity, respect and sportsmanship. Thank you to our sponsor Jostens for donating a $1000 grant to our female and male recipient.

Tristan Smith Nominated by: Robin Gauthier

Tristan is a grade 12 student at École secondaire publique Maurice-Lapointe in Kanata, Ontario.

Tristan is a devoted student, a talented, hard-working athlete and a dedicated

volunteer within his community. He participated in volleyball, hockey, soccer, ultimate, badminton and track and field. In the school community, Tristan was the treasurer for the school student government and convened the school’s intramural floor hockey league. He also served as an assistant coach for the junior girls’ volleyball team at school.

Outside of school activities, Tristan enjoys volunteering as a counsellor with the Academy of Martial Arts and the Royal City Soccer Camp in Kanata. In addition, he also gives his time to the Kanata Food Cupboard Food Drive.

Outside of competing, Tristan refereed soccer for the Eastern Region Soccer League and the atomic volleyball tournaments organized by his school. For the City of Ottawa, he can be trusted as a sound swimming instructor and lifeguard.

Tristan is a proud ambassador of his school and he presents many of the core values that the school tries to instill in their students on a daily basis. With his organizational skills and relentless work ethic, the school has full confidence in Tristan. The teachers from the staff that have had the pleasure of working with this student acknowledge his compassion for colleagues, his respect for teachers and his desire to improve and gain more knowledge at every occasion.

Tristan’s integrity and leadership traits, both at school and in the community, make him an excellent recipient of the 2019-20 Character Athlete Award. Congratulations!

Bravo!

Grace Petsnick Nominated by: Gord McCabe

Grace is a grade 12 student at Fort Frances High School.

Grace has been a recognized leader by her peers and teachers since her Grade 9 arrival to the school. It’s widely known that her drive for team success, along

with the success of her teammates, was more important than her own individual accomplishments.

Grace was voted a co-captain by her teammates in her first year of high school. She has played on the basketball team, and served as captain, in each of her four years. The past two seasons, she was the unanimous choice by player vote. The tenacious defender and talented scorer owns a “pass first” mentality on the court.

Grace was the captain on the volleyball team in grade 11 and 12 and the club qualified for OFSAA in both seasons. She took part in track and field high jump, long jump – qualifying for OFSAA for both in Grade 9. A four-year captain of the track team, Grace also ran in the 100m, 400m, 4x100 relay and the 4x400 relay.

The school’s first ever Unicycle Club was spearheaded by Grace in her first year of high school. Forming the club and raising money to purchase unicycles, the club now has 30 bikes. For the past three years, Grace has been a math and english tutor within the school and privately as well. In 2018, she helped organize a town-wide water walk to raise money and awareness for African communities without access to clean water. Grace also attended the Olympia Sports Leadership Camp to become a camp counsellor.

As a Judoka, Grace has won two National titles in two years. With a limited number of girls to fight in Northwestern Ontario, she exhibited equity in a tournament in Dryden by opting to compete against boys in her division rather than against females that she regularly fought and defeated in the past. She did not capture gold that day, but showed maturity beyond her years.

This volunteer basketball and judo coach is an extremely worthy selection for this annual award. Congratulations, Grace!

22 THE BULLETIN SPRING 2020

OFSAA Badminton ChampionshipLondon Cancelled Due to Covid-19

Submitted by Co-Covenor Tim Marks

Committee Members: Michael Darling (Fund Raising), Andrew Michailidis(Treasurer, Zanth Jarvis - Sports Tourism London, Steve Ruddach - Fanshawe College Badminton Coach, Louisa Tong & Kermit Canam (Tournament Draws and Operations), Geza Vargyas (Site Convener), Paul Favento (Site Convener), George Letsos (Banquet), Peter Gauld (Program), Keri-Jo Puddicome (Program), Tanya Michaud (Volunteers - Saunders), Dave Collins (Live Video Presentation), Christina Leyton (Social Media), Veronika Favento (Banquet Music) & Peter Chapman (Volunteers - Oakridge).

First and foremost on behalf of Geoff Hiscox and the entire OFSAA 2020 Badminton Committee I want to express our great disappointment in having to cancel/postpone our Championship Festival here in London this May. We believe that we had an outstanding event planned with our partners here in the community which included the Four Points Sheraton Hotel, Fanshawe College and the City of London’s Carling Heights Optimist Community Centre, Sports Tourism London and Tourism London. Everything was ready and in place to welcome athletes and coaches from across the province. We even had our Oakridge Badminton Team shirts ready to go. We were especially excited to have Alex Kopacz agree to be our Guest Speaker at the Banquet. Alex was born and raised in London and competed for Mother Teresa Catholic Secondary School (London) at the W.O.S.S.A.A. Badminton Championships. He went on to become the Two Man Bobsleigh Gold Medalist at the 2018 Olympic Games in Pyeong Chang, South Korea.

We are looking forward to the 2021 OFSAA Badminton Championships

and we are fully committed to host the event in London if OFSAA determines that that is the best outcome for the ongoing situation that we are in as a country and in the world. We hope that everyone stays safe and we will see the return to school and competition whenever it is safe to do so.

The OFSAA Boys’ A Basketball Championship took place in beautiful North Bay, Ontario. The host from West Ferris Intermediate & Secondary School (NOSSA), lead by convenor Brandon Grube, organized a great provincial event for all participants. West Ferris I&S.S., Chippewa S.S and Nipissing University proved to be perfect venues and fans were treated to great competition. This year’s field was deep, however, one team stood above all the others. In a highly-contested defensive matchup, Timmins High & Vocational School (NEOAA) defeated St. Paul Secondary School (ROPSSAA) 39-34 in the gold medal game. The surprise team of this year’s championship was #12 seeded Niagara Christian Collegiate (SOSSA), who defeated the #4 seed Notre Dame High School (NCSSAA) in the bronze medal game, 65-60, to capture their first OFSAA team medal in school history.

Congratulations to the following gold medal-winning players: Conrad Bierman, Ryan Dailey, Corbin DeBlois, Jeremy Duguay,

Logan Faucher, Owen Hagerty, Brayden Inishinapay, Tyler Marcotte, Ethan Miron, Brayden Roy, Ivan Villegasand and coaches Wayne Bozzer, Greg Vincze and Peter Graham.

Participants gathered at the local Best Western Hotel & Conference Centre for a very important pre-tournament meal and listened carefully to the guest speaker, Joe Raso. The 2020 Leadership in School Sport Award recipient was Dan Coutu. Dan has organized various tournaments in North Bay and Parry Sound. As a teacher-coach at Chippewa Secondary School (NOSSA), Dan has been a positive role model for students for more than 15 years.

The Team Sportsmanship banner was awarded to a well-deserving Atikokan High School (NWOSSAA). The team demonstrated great sportsmanship throughout the tournament. Congratulations to all the players and coaches!

OFSAA would like to thank Gatorade Canada for providing product, displays and towels at this year’s boys’ A championship.

24 THE BULLETIN SPRING 2020

The top two seeds were on a collision course as top-ranked Frontenac Secondary School (EOSSAA) met number two-ranked Crescent School (CISAA) in the gold medal game. In a contest featuring two very balanced teams, Frontenac completed their unbeaten run over the three days by taking the championship by a score of 47-41.

In the semi-finals, the silver medalists from Crescent School defeated Saint Francis CSS (SOSSA) and Frontenac got by Ashbury College (NCSSAA) in a tight game. Saint Francis seized the bronze medal in a strong showing against Ashbury College.

The three medal games on day three all took place at the WFCU Centre – the home of the Windsor Express of the National Basketball League of Canada. The venue really provided a “big game championship atmosphere” for the teams and the spectators.

Convenor Matt Loebach orchestrated another successful OFSAA championship with the games played at three area high schools over the first two days. Participating teams enjoyed a first-class banquet at the Caboto Club in Windsor. Chris Cheng, the University of Windsor’s men’s basketball coach, expressed inspirational words to

the captive audience at the banquet. Dr. Pat Smith also delivered an informative awareness presentation on Stigma Enigma – messages to enlighten a teenage audience on the benefits of mental wellness.

Congratulations to the members of the championship team from Frontenac SS: Sam Playter, Isaac Chapman, Varun Patel, Josh Ukwesa, Carlos Ramirez, Faris Anagreh, Caleb Patry, Connor Briand, Nicholas Adair, Alex Vreeken, Alberto Menendez, Stephen Andrews, Cameron Wright and coaches Duncan Cowan, Connor Carey, Justin Wallace, Vincent Dufort and Jim Latimer.

Jean Vanier CSS (TDCAA) was the recipient of the Team Sportsmanship Award for their overall demonstration of respect towards their opponents and game officials.

Dave Walls of Catholic Central High School in Windsor (SWOSSAA) was on hand at the banquet to receive the OFSAA Leadership in School Sport Award at the 2020 Boys’ AA Basketball Championship. Dave has been a member of 12 OFSAA host committees from 2009 to 2016 for girls’ and boys’ basketball and soccer. He has coached basketball, track and field and cross country at the high school level in Windsor over the past 30 years. Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition, Dave!

OFSAA would like to thank Gatorade Canada for providing product, displays and towels at this year’s AA championship.

Submitted by Convenor Rob Houston

OFSAA Curling would have been both an athletic and social success if it had been able to run. The organizing committee of eight, convened by Rob Houston and Chris Waghorn, had been working for more than two years at making the championship a memorable event.

The event was going to be held at the Port Perry, Uxbridge, and Whitby Curling Clubs. The boys’ draw would have had 20 teams playing in four pools, and the girls’ draw would have had 18 teams playing in three pools. Quarter-finals were slated for the Port Perry and Uxbridge clubs, with the semi-finals and medal games were scheduled for Whitby.

The opening night banquet was to be held at and catered by the Hospitality Services at Father Leo J Austin Catholic Secondary School. Prizes and donations of curling socks, chocolate rocks and curling playing cards were going to be given to participants. The guest speaker was going to be 2019 World Junior Champion Matthew Hall.

The committee would particularly like to thank the three curling clubs for cancelling their leagues to accommodate the province’s youth curlers. Each team was going to play at least one game at each of the three clubs as a way of saying thanks.

Hockey Fans,

Although disappointing to have our OFSAA Host dreams dashed for the A/AA Boys’ Hockey Championships due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we

have to look at the positives. Building this dream of hosting for over one year was a great piece of teamwork. The desire to host grew out of athletic excellence on the OFSAA stage for many Saint Francis teams whether basketball, soccer, swimming or yearly visits to cross country. Our boys’ hockey team was another club building on some great results including representing SOSSA at Boys’ Hockey A/AA in Collingwood during 2018.

After a successful bid on behalf of OFSAA, our team got to work, booking ice, hotels, and the banquet while foundation work was active in the design and build of our logo and website. Also, countless hours were spent creating and designing our tournament program. All of this work together took many hands across many functions while putting together a successful season on the ice.

Reading and listening to the passion and excitement in the voices and texts of students, coaches, convenors, community members and OFSAA was part of the excitement of hosting. I would like to thank our committee, OFSAA executive, Tim Larry (OFSAA) and Peter Morris (OFSAA) and our great supporters

Joe Pillitteri, Marcel Dionne and all of our sponsors (still published on our championship website) who were coming together to put on a show for you. Thank you to the various foundation partners who went out of their way to support our championship: Shamus Bourdon and Doug Gellatly at OFSAA, Tim Larry, Chris McLean, Peter Morris and the seeding committee, Dave Marrone & Front Row Sports Excellence, Rebecca Hunter and the Nitsopolous family (Heart of Niagara Hotels), Sean Krawchuk and Club Roma, Ridley College, The City of St. Catharines, Lincoln Minor Hockey and Town of Lincoln, Jennie Stevens, MPP with Taylor Downs, Jim Bradley – Regional Chair, Niagara Catholic DSB and the Niagara Catholic Athletic Association (NCAA) and SOSSA.

Often never mentioned is the great work that the seeding committees provide. Organized by Chris McLean, the PhysEd Consultant for Niagara Catholic with extensive playing and coaching experience at all levels, worked diligently right up to the day the unfortunate news arrived regarding the cancellation of OFSAA events after March Break. Our seeding committee included Christopher McLean- Chair, Norm Petterson, Pat Reilly, Peter Morris, Scott Buffam and Bryson Filipetti.

The committee is also disappointed for many folks that helped put together a potentially rocking night in what was to be our banquet. Joe Pilliteri would have knocked your socks off and he was as excited about his show as the kids coming to play and Marcel Dionne, NHL Hall of Famer, so ready and willing to be our very engaging guest speaker.

And of course an important announcement was on tap for our Leadership In School Sport Award winner. This recipient is the glue that help make athletics great by supporting anyone who helps kids be great. He ensures we have all the ice we need, when we need it for two different hockey teams, a yearly junior hockey tourney, football scoring and sticks crew and whatever team needs someone to keep all items organized.

Mr. Marc Venneri, our very own Leadership In School Sport Award winner was to be honoured by his family, colleagues, friends, Jennie Stevens MPP, Joe Pillieteri and the 500 visitors to our banquet! Thank you for everything, Marc!

Thanks to the variety of facility operators who worked very hard to ensure we had ice at Ridley College, City of St. Catharines, Meridian Centre and Town of Lincoln.

In addition, many thanks to our technology department working with Niagara College on significant live stream technologies and needs surrounding the event that never came to fruition.

Many thanks must go to Tim Larry, Pat Park and the OFSAA operational side for their tremendous support.

On behalf of the St. Michael OFSAA Organizing committee, we would like to congratulate all the players, coaches and training staffs for your regional successes. You worked extremely hard to achieve your successes and we know that your school community, as well as the St. Michael staff and the OFSAA organization, are super proud of your efforts!

A team of more than 45 people have worked together to put forth an event that unfortunately didn’t take place because of the Covid-19 Pandemic. We would like to take this opportunity

to thank all of the organizing committee and outside volunteers who put in countless hours to prepare for the Girls’ A/AA Hockey OFSAA event. Special thanks to the Arden Park, Edge Imaging, Gatorade and Physiotherapy Alliance for your commitment to OFSAA events!

Another missed opportunity for our athletes was the anticipated presentation by Jessie Eldridge. Her rich hockey experience including four years at Colgate University, her time with the Toronto Aeros, and her experience playing with the Women’s National team this past February would have been a motivational force for our 320 plus female athletes. We wish her the best in all her future pursuits, and we thank her for her willingness to promote and celebrate women athletes!

In closing, we would like to take this time to recognize Tim Doherty-former St. Mike’s Teacher/Principal- for being a leader in athletics. His dedication to high school sports, and to athletics within the community, for over 20 years, has resulted in many championships and produced excellent athletes. His unwavering efforts to be a better coach, and to help others to do the same through his ongoing mentorship is unparalleled. Thank you Tim Doherty for all that you have done and continue to do! You are a great coach, leader, and role model and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

The OFSAA Boys’ and Girls’ Hockey Championships convenor would like to congratulate all teams who qualified and worked tirelessly to achieve their goal this year in getting to OFSAA.

We would like to thank the general manager of

the Windsor Spitfires, Bill Bowler, who committed to being our guest speaker. We would also like to thank Tim Hortons, Johnny Shotz Sports Bar, Boston Pizza,

and the Caboto Club who were our gold sponsors.

Dan Laporte, Principal of Brennan Sports Academies within the FJ Brennan Family of Schools, was the recipient of our Leadership in School Sport Award for the 2020 OFSAA AAA Boys’ and Girls’ Hockey Championships. Dan devoted over 34 years to organizing and coaching athletics within the region of Windsor-Essex. He has sat on numerous athletic councils and has led with integrity and passion for youth sports. Dan has always encouraged athletes from all walks of life to try their best and his dedication has transferred over to his many administrative staffs.

Finally, we would like to thank the municipal councils of Tecumseh, Windsor and Lakeshore who supported us during this venture.

30 THE BULLETIN SPRING 2020

Under magnificent weather conditions, the 2020 OFSAA Alpine Ski Championship was held at Osler Bluff Ski Club in Collingwood, February 24-25. The championship was led by Convenor Kevin Gosselin of Jean Vanier Catholic Secondary School and his steering committee of Melissa Wheatcroft and Liz Peyton. Along with the team from Osler

Bluff and the Registration Committee, this championship was buttoned down from the get-go.

Sixty-seven schools, 336 athletes from 13 Associations participated in this year’s event.

The banquet was held at Craigleith Ski Club and the highlight was the speech by Olympic Downhill skier and local resident, Luke Sauder. Luke imparted many pearls of wisdom from his ski career, which was highlighted by participation in two Olympics, Nagano (1998) and Lillehammer (1994) and the famous Kitzbuhel course in Austria- the most feared course in downhill skiing.

Melissa Wheatcroft of Jean Vanier was recognized with the Leadership in School Sport Award for her dedication and commitment throughout her outstanding teaching and coaching career. She has been heavily involved in alpine skiing, both from a coaching and organizational standpoint, as well as many other sports. Her positive attitude and role modeling have been a source

of inspiration to her school and her community. Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition!

The Osler Bluff ski race team ran an unbelievably efficient series of races over two days in both Slalom and Giant Slalom. Racers were able to challenge themselves to be their very best and the results proved it. There were numerous compliments to both Osler Bluff and Kevin Gosselin for this great championship event.

Newly-renovated facilities and perfectly groomed trails at Arrowhead Nordic Center Provincial Park welcomed 684 Nordic Skiers to OFSAA in 2020. Although the event was shortened by a day, high school student-athletes and coaches from every region of the province arrived with positive attitudes and a strong competitive spirit. John Cowan and the volunteer organizing

committee from Huntsville High School (GBSSA) are to be commended for exhibiting a high degree of patience and dedication in providing participants with an amazing OFSAA experience.

Beautiful facilities at Deerhurst Resort served as the location for this year’s Athletes’ Village and hosted the OFSAA coach’s meeting. During the meeting, the 2020 Leadership in School Sport Award was awarded to John Labine. John has spearheaded Nordic Skiing at Roland Michener High School (NEOAA) in Timmins, Ontario for the past 29 years. Coach Labine has been an instrumental leader within the community of Timmins and also served as the northern representative for Nordic Skiing in the province for many years. Thank you for your dedicated

passion of the sport and student-athletes during your career.

Congratulations to all skiers for being great role models in high school sport! Once again, we would like to thank John Cowan for his leadership, organization and passion for nordic skiing while providing all participants with lasting OFSAA memories.

32 THE BULLETIN SPRING 2020

The Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre was the site for this year’s OFSAA Swimming Championships and for the second consecutive year, Rick Mahoney (York Mills CI - TDSSAA) and his hardworking committee, did a fantastic job of hosting the event on behalf of the Toronto District School Board. Close to 2100 student-athletes representing almost

300 Ontario high schools, along with their teacher-coaches, community volunteers, parents and interested spectators attended the two-day event. TPASC is a tremendous facility and everything ran extremely well in large part because of the number of well-organized student volunteers and community swimming officials who helped the committee.

Once again, live streaming technology gave the event a professional appearance. A total of 7,844 viewer sign-ins, equalling a total of 14,121 viewing sessions, were recorded and

people from 57 countries around the world took advantage of the opportunity to watch student-athletes compete. The top 5 viewing countries were: Canada, United States, United Kingdom, Barbados and Mexico. OFSAA would like to extend a special thank you to Rick and his outstanding crew for putting on such a great event!

At the pre-championship coach’s meeting, the OFSAA Leadership in School Sport Award was presented to long time Halton Catholic District School Board teacher-coach and administrator Kevin Wong. His dedication to high school sport and to the student-athletes that he has impacted is obvious and he is a most deserving recipient of this prestigious award. Kevin has been involved in almost every aspect of the competitive swimming community. He has coached at both the school and community levels and is a certified Level 5 and Para Official who has spent countless hours instructing and training officials. He has also been the Chair of the Swimming SAC and has hosted OFSAA Swimming on four different occasions. His passion extends outside of swimming as demonstrated by the fact that he hosted the first-ever OFSAA Ultimate Festival this past fall.

Congratulations and thank you, Kevin!

Championship Results

An exciting three days of competition culminated in a gold medal match between University of Toronto Schools (TDCAA) and Collège Notre-Dame (NOSSA) at the OFSAA Girls’ A Volleyball Championship in Walkerton. The number one seeded U of T Schools prevailed by a score of 3-1 over a Notre-Dame team that rose from the number 14 seed to earn a silver medal.

Congratulations to U of T Schools and players Sophie Lynn, Allison

Xie, Adri Virag, Christina Shao, Shuyu Van Kerkwijk, Ella Chiang, Georgia Smeaton-Kazenberg, Hannah Joo, Layla Kazerouni, Sara Joo, and coaches Garry Kollins, Shannon Clancy and Mark Laidman.

Thank you to convenors Donnette Wand and Tanya Byers of Walkerton District Community School who, along with all the volunteers, provided an outstanding event and experience for the students. A strong sense of spirit and camaraderie was created on opening night when enthusiasm filled the gymnasium, as teams learned some games and dance routines before and after the banquet.

Local schools supported the championship with matches being played at Walkerton DCS, Sacred Heart High School and Kincardine District Secondary School. The Davidson Centre in Kincardine rounded out the list of host venues.

The winner of the OFSAA Leadership in School Sport Award was Donnette Wand of Walkerton DCS (CWOSSA). Donnette has dedicated her career to coaching, contributing to her school, and supporting students. She has coached male, female and co-ed teams in volleyball, basketball, badminton and mountain biking, at all age levels. She has also served as CWOSSA boys’ volleyball co-convenor for eight years and oversees the WDCS weight room. Congratulations, Donnette on this deserving recognition!

The team representing École secondaire publique L’Heritage were winners of this year’s Team Sportsmanship Award. The championship featured several teams that could have been chosen and who embodied the philosophy of school sport. Congratulations to the team members of ESP L’Héritage and their outstanding coaches, Allison Haley, Jacinthe Carrière, Marc Hurtubise and Jade Pommier.

The OFSAA Girls’ AA Volleyball Championship was hosted by the Kingsville Cavaliers (SWOSSAA).

Co-convenors Jason Leili, Sydney Booth and their committee members were honoured to host 20 teams from across the province. The tournament began with the traditional banquet held at the Roma Club and the players

enjoyed a fabulous evening which began with a live dance off streamed on Twitter and Instagram.

Lucas Hodgins, the head coach of Women’s Volleyball team at the University of Windsor was the guest speaker and he delivered a poignant speech about being a well-rounded student-athlete and being “all in”. He emphasized the importance of positive body language and understanding your role on a team and that doesn’t necessarily mean you need to be the best player. He also stressed the discipline to play a sport at the post-secondary level which transcends into the classroom and to absorb every moment of the AA Volleyball Championship.

At the banquet, the Leadership in School Sport Award was presented to Steve Johnson - a career teacher-coach at Leamington District SS (and now closed Harrow HS). Congratulations, Steve on this well-deserved award!

Jason and Sydney once again thought of everything from baskets of fresh vegetables locally grown in the Kingsville area to healthy smoothies and an on-site kinesiologist and physiotherapist. The leadership of student scorekeepers and officials are to be commended for their outstanding professionalism and demeanour under pressure.

There was hard-hitting and dynamic defensive play throughout the round robin by all the teams. In the gold medal game, Streetsville defeated Nelson in an exciting final. The athletes demonstrated the OFSAA values of leadership, integrity and resilience throughout the championship.

Congratulations to Streetsville team members: Sidney Alexander, Teri Davis Ewan, Cassandra Edge, Emily Forbes, Emma Glagau, Kaylee Glagau, Atiya Malik, Ummehani Merchant, Valerie Rodriguez Mendez, Dhivya Shirley, Julia Spiliotopoulos and their coaches Dan Dawson and Caren Young.

É.S.C. Theriault received the Team Sportsmanship Award for their great display of character and OFSAA spirit throughout the entire championship. Congratulations to the players and coaches!

The 2020 Girls’ AAA OFSAA Volleyball Championship was hosted by SWOSSAA. The convenors from Chatham Kent Secondary School, Mike and Elish Smith, set the bar high for all future OFSAA tournaments. The amount of planning and organization was clearly evident in how smoothly this tournament ran. Right from the opening banquet to the gold medal game, the teams were treated to a first-class experience.

The banquet was held at Club Lentinas and the keynote speaker was Jen Neilson, head coach Women’s Volleyball at York University. There was also a motivating video from members of Canada’s National Volleyball Team. The participants also were gifted with many door prizes throughout the night and entire tournament.

The ladies from Dr. Frank J. Hayden were full marks for their gold medals as they overcame a sound Waterloo CI squad in the final. Thanks to the many sponsors, there were also gifts for sportsmanship throughout the tournament after every

match. Thank you to the many volunteers who helped organize this wonderful tournament. Without good volunteers, this event would not have been so successful.

The Leadership In School Sport Award was presented to Al Hendrie of John McGregor Secondary School. Al is a longtime coach of both boys’ and girls’ volleyball in the high school community and is well respected by his peers in the sport.

Once the first serve was hit, the fans witnessed some very high calibre volleyball. All of the teams involved represented their associations with the highest level of athleticism and sportsmanship. There were some great matches throughout the tournament and all teams left Chatham with a great OFSAA experience.

Congratulations to Hayden team members: Cosette Bowman, Lauren Friesen, Maya Grabowski, Paige Hagan, Hailey Holland, Kallan Holley, Olivia Krishnan, Ava Mann, Jenna Peters, Eden Punch, Nikki Tesic, Viktoria Wahlgren, Ana Zaric and their coaches Mitchell Kleer and Billy Rowe.

Sir Winston Churchill SS (SOSSA) was chosen as the Sportsmanship Team Award recipient for their excellent attitude and fair play throughout the championship. Congratulations!

The GFL Memorial Gardens -home of the OHL’s Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds- was the site of this year’s wrestling championship.

Over 750 of the best high school wrestlers assembled at the Gardens ready to compete. Many exciting and intense matches led up to the medal rounds, and as always in wrestling, sportsmanship prevailed in both victory and defeat.

Trevor Manchester from Korah CV&I was this year’s convenor. Trevor and his committee had been preparing for two years for this event. Their preparation and hard work paid off in a well-executed championship.

A special thank you to Trevor for his flexibility in scheduling and ensuring that the championship ended early on Wednesday.

The Leadership in School Sport Award was presented to Ron Rietsma from Sandwich Secondary School in SWOSSAA. Ron is retiring this year after a very successful teaching and coaching career. He has not only coached his athletes but has served as a mentor to many coaches from the Windsor area. Congratulations, Ron!
