on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn. By following, liking, engaging and sharing, you’re helping spread the word about our animals, and that helps them get adopted more quickly. We can’t overstate the power and importance of each interaction on our pages. Sharing a cute picture, an animal in need of adoption, a video or story, could be the reason an animal finds a forever family.

Thousands of people made a difference in 2019 and as a result, we adopted out more animals than any other time in our history! These folks donated money, time and gifts to help our animals and we are eternally thankful.

We also receive donations in honor or memory of a person or pet. Those contributions to our organization make such a big difference for our animals every year and we are honored to share those names in this issue.

Thank you all for your help in 2019. I invite you to join me as I too pledge to make a difference for our animals in 2020.

Tom Van WinkleExecutive Director

Making a difference means “to have a significant effect on a person or situation.”

If my tests in school were this easy, I think I would have found it much more enjoyable. But, as I often found in school, there’s only partial credit for such a basic answer. The definition above leaves off some very “significant” parts of what it means to make a difference.

In 2020, the PRRC will encounter many more ways to make a difference in the lives of animals in need. We ask you to join us in helping make that difference. Here are a few examples we can all consider:

The first is the most obvious, but I’ve got a different spin on it. I’m sure you know that helping over 1,500 animals a year is an expensive undertaking and we could not do it without the financial support we receive. This year, we’re asking donors to consider making a monthly gift. Right after the holidays, and for the months following, donations are typically low which makes gifts especially impactful during this time of year. A $10 monthly gift may not seem like a lot, but with a large quantity of monthly donors, the results are impressive.

A second way to make a difference is to engage with us on social media. Follow us

Events that Make a Difference for our AnimalsCheers to the Cat CafeOur first Cat Cafe this past November gave guests ample time to play with cats and kittens while enjoying a relaxing environment, coffee and treats. At the same time, it provided our resident felines with fantastic socialization time and they loved it! Visitors signed up for a one-hour timeslot and got to relax in our Elinor & Jake Brickman Education Center which was transformed into a cafe, complete with lounge chairs, cat trees, cat toys and of course, cats.

The $10 registration fee allowed us to raise more funds to help pay for all of our felines’ ongoing maintenance and care, and our guests all loved their special time in the cafe.

Our thanks to Hash Stacks of Western Springs for their ongoing donation of coffee to our facility, and to Courageous Bakery & Cafe in Elmhurst for donating treats for our guests.

More visitors will be able to enjoy this unique opportunity for a “feline and coffee fix” at future Cat Cafes. Please watch our website and social media for details!

Photos with Santa Paws for a CauseThis annual event continues to grow and thrive. On Saturday, December 7th, the PRRC was transformed into a winter wonderland complete with unique gift vendors, holiday treats, a children’s choir and, of course, Santa Claus.

With nearly 50 photo sessions filled during the 3-hour event, volunteer photographer Laura Dajoraite (LauraPhotos.com), had her hands full accommodating all of the attendees and their furry friends. The event was made possible by our sponsor, Tina Tzinares from State Farm. Vendors offered unique ornaments, greeting cards, soaps, lotions, dog toys and more, while children from the Miller Music Studio treated everyone to the sounds of the season, and our youngest attendees were able to make a DIY plate for Santa.

Photos with Santa Paws will return in 2020 for another dose of holiday fun and fundraising to help our animals.

The Sheltered LifeTandy and Luka Go Home

How do two puppies end up growing up in a shelter? Puppies typically get adopted as soon as they come through the door! But sometimes it just takes time to get a pet into the perfect home. Tandy and Luka were those unique cases of shelter puppies who became shelter dogs while they waited for their forever families.

Additionally, they both happened to have that little bit of extra spunk and sass that made them somewhat challenging to handle. Looking at both of their adorable faces, you’d never imagine they would have a hard time getting adopted, but because their personalities were larger than life, and their bodies were still growing and trying to contain all of their energy, they were each a handful to manage.

With time, consistent training from staff and volunteers, and lots of TLC and opportunities to get out and socialize like typical dogs (Tandy even got to visit Two Bostons in Wheaton to pick out toys in their store and visit with Santa!), these two grew into the amazing and unique dogs they were each meant to be. And that led them to the amazing and unique families who were each the perfect match for them.

Adopting an animal and giving them that beautiful second chance at a great life, is up at the top of the list of ways to make a difference. We cannot thank all of our adopters enough for making the choice to help an animal in need with the ultimate gift of a forever home.

Joseph the WarriorAfter living his entire life in shelters, Joseph was faced with another challenge: MAJOR SURGERY

Joseph’s story illustrates the struggles some animals endure on their journey to adoption, but it also exemplifies the beautiful resilience they show us each and every day.

Joseph came to us with his brother Frank on August 31. They had both lived together in shelters their entire lives. Joseph appeared to be the more confident of the two; Frank wasn’t really sure how to navigate the world without him. We work hard to give our animals the best chance for happy endings, but the reality of adopting out two big black dogs together presented a daunting task.

We worked on enrichment activities with Frank so he could learn he didn’t have to be scared without Joseph. Our dog walkers spent extra time with him outside letting him explore at his own pace. Slowly but surely, Frank gained the confidence he needed and was ready for his forever home, which he found quickly.

That left Joseph. During his exam, our veterinarian, Dr. Kristin, found an old fracture to his knee cap. It had healed improperly and caused him significant pain and discomfort. His other leg compensated well and all of the joints looked great, so an orthopedic specialist recommended amputation for the best chance at a pain-free outcome. Dr. Kristin performed the challenging surgery and Joseph rebounded beautifully and quickly, adapting well to his new tripod status.

We are thrilled to share that Joseph is healed and living his happily ever after in an ideal forever home with a retired veteran who is ready to shower him with love and give him the life he so deserves. We salute you, Joseph the Warrior, and your wonderful adopter!

With funding from the Irving & Phyllis Millstein Foundation for Animal Welfare, we have created the Millstein Vaccination Program (MVP) to assist pet owners in need, in getting their pets the basic care they need to remain healthy and happy

The traveling clinic brings vaccinations and low-cost micro-chipping into communities to help lessen the cost of medical care for pets, and provides them at convenient locations

Watch our website home page, our social media pages and your email for upcoming clinic dates and locations.

Heads & TailsDecompression Time: The Rule of 3-3-3There is nothing more exciting than making that love connection in the shelter with your new pet and bringing them home to start your new life together. But what sometimes gets forgotten in all of that excitement, is the fact that things can change from that love-at-first-sight moment, to the reality of your pet’s adjustment to her new life. You may have heard of the 3-3-3 Rule, but if not, please read on to get a better understanding of what it takes to let your new pet fully blossom in her new home. First of all, consider all of the change going on for your pet. Your home is new to her, you are new to her and possibly other family members and other pets are all new. This can cause anxiety in the calmest, most laid back of pets… and humans for that matter! Your pet who may have behaved one way in the shelter environment, may now behave differently with all of the new stimuli she is processing. This is the time when you are building your bond with your new pet, and it takes time. We recommend breaking it down into parcels of time: 3 days, 3 weeks, 3 months: 3 DAYS: At this time marker, everything is still very new for your pet and it can be overwhelming. This is

a stressful time and can change your pet’s behavior temporarily. Some will test boundaries during this crucial period and some might be scared and even try to hide. Not to worry… just be patient. 3 WEEKS: By now your new pet should be aware that this is a safe place with people that can be trusted. She’s learning the routines, all of the players and the schedule. She’s getting comfortable and letting down her guard. In some cases, negative behaviors will subside. In other cases, negative behaviors that were masked by stress, might crop up. If negative behaviors surface, again, just be patient. It takes more time for everything to finally settle. 3 MONTHS: Now we’re at the time marker when things should have all settled… your pet knows you, knows her home, and the repetition of routine, feeding, love and care has built to this point and will continue to grow. While every pet, situation and home is different, these general time markers do hold true in most cases and are a great way to assess where you and your new pet are in the process of settling in and becoming the forever family you were always meant to be.

Making a Difference Through Fostering & VolunteeringLooking for a way to make a difference in the lives of homeless animals in the new year? Consider fostering and volunteering to make a big impact. Our budget, funded solely by donations, could not sustain the staff needed to manage the larger volume of animals we can now rescue in our larger facility. That’s where our fosters and volunteers come into the picture to make it all possible.

Fostering Saves LivesWe often find ourselves overrun with animals in need. Among them can be pregnant animals, orphaned kittens and puppies and animals in need of recovery time just to name a few. Foster care provides these special needs animals with a quiet place where they can thrive. Because of our foster families, animals who might not otherwise be adopted, are able to find loving forever homes.

Foster Failure? We hear this question all the time: “What if I don’t want to bring my foster back?” First of all, if you bond with your foster and decide to keep him, that is most definitely NOT a failure. In fact it is a foster success because you skipped that animal right to its final goal: finding a home. Take Freddie Purrcury. He was our FIV+ cat who had been with us for 100 days. He was a super cool cat who had appeared on WGN and wowed everyone with his relaxed vibe. Our Volunteer and Foster Coordinator Kelsey Barry decided to foster him to give him a break from the shelter. That break turned into forever and Freddie is now being spoiled rotten by his mama Kelsey. On the flipside, we have a lovely foster family with a 17 year old daughter who does all of the work fostering our special needs pets to help get them ready for adoption. She was sad dropping back off the first litter of kittens she fostered, but then went on to ask if she could keep the supplies so she could do it again! For some, fostering is the perfect way to make a difference without the lifetime commitment.

What’s Involved?Becoming a foster is a quick process. Just sign up online, come in for a 20-30 minute orientation, fill out a few forms and you’re ready. We provide everything needed. Our fosters never need to spend a dime.

Work Study ProgramsWe offer work study programs for individuals with disabilities, veterans and more to help prepare them for the work world. We help them and they help us, so it’s a very mutually beneficial program. From Veterans Affairs groups to organizations like Acacia, Helping Hands and Menta, we are thrilled to provide this opportunity. Contact [email protected] for more information.

Volunteers: We Want You!Our volunteers are the lifeblood of our organization. And we’re always in need of more! Volunteering with us is flexible and easy, with a variety of opportunities available all day long and into the evening. Whether it’s working in the dog and cat kennels, walking dogs, cat socializing, greeting or working events, there is something for everyone. We could not be more thankful to our wonderful volunteers for all they do. To learn more about opportunities and how you can become a volunteer, visit our website and fill out an application, or contact [email protected].

Quotes That Illustrate The Impact Of Therapaws Pet Therapy

“Staff and students are still talking about Bosco and Jango’s last visit. Dietre and Mike (Bosco and Jango’s handlers) are incredibly patient and warm when interacting with our students. We can’t thank you enough for providing this wonderful opportunity for us!” - Karen Boozell, Rush University Day School

“Thank you for coming to The British Home (in December). My husband will be 98 yrs. old (this month). His name is “E” and he is a WWll veteran. He is in the British home for rehabilitation. He hopes to come back home where I want him very much. “E” loves dogs and once owned three. JJ brightened his spirits. Though he is currently in isolation and you could not enter his room, the greeting in the doorway was absolutely wonderful. Thanks again.” - E’s wife after a visit to Cantata (formerly The British Home)

“Pet therapy has been very therapeutic to our patients on the Behavioral Health unit. It improves motivation to participate in treatment and lessens worry, anxiety, and pain. That brief time spent on our unit influences not just our patients’ happiness but also their health. Our staff looks forward to the pet visits as well.” - Pam Pinto, AMITA Health Adventist Hinsdale Hospital

Ways to Give and Make a DifferenceBecome a Part of HistoryThe Carla E. Fisher Memorial Garden, is a reflective area located in front of our building. It serves as a space for our pets and volunteers to unwind after a walk, get some exercise or just enjoy the weather and be outside of the kennels.

Personalized bricks filled with loving words in honor of pets and people make this an inspirational space. Custom laser-engraved patio bricks are a beautiful tribute and will become a permanent part of history for generations to come, all while helping homeless animals. Bricks can be inscribed in honor, or in memory of an animal or animal lover, a donor’s name, family name or business name. Gifts and order forms will be accepted through February 14, 2020. For orders placed after that date, installation will take place in 2021.

For more information about our Memorial Brick Program, visit www.hinsdalehumanesociety.org/help/memorial-bricks. For questions, please contact Deborah Kraus at [email protected] or 630-323-5630 x32. Thank you for your kind and generous compassion shown to all those who are honored and remembered.

Match Me Up CampaignsWe work with individual donors and businesses to create campaigns that directly benefit our “harder to adopt” dogs and cats through waived adoption fees, specialized training, personalized promotion and enrichment.

Corporate Partnerships We welcome corporate groups looking for ways to give back through various partnership opportunities to create meaningful team building experiences while supporting us and our mission.

Community Involvement With expanded services comes the goal of extended partnerships with a broader base of community organizations and businesses. Our leadership is committed to consistent, proactive outreach to share its story with the different communities in its service region. And now we can also share our space and are inviting businesses and nonprofit groups into our new home to use our facility for their own functions.

Contact Jacki Rossi at [email protected] or 630-323-5630 x12 for more information about these opportunities.

Paws & HeartsA Big Thank You To All of Our Sponsors and Community Partners

Spotlight on our Community Partners State Farm - Tina Tzinares

Community partnerships are vital to the work we do at HHS for many reasons; advocacy, awareness, engagement and financial support are just a few. Nothing brings us more happiness than working together for the betterment of our animals and our community programs.

That’s why we are grateful for our partnership with Tina Tzinares - State Farm Insurance Agent (pictured left). Tina was not only born and raised in Hinsdale, but she is a second generation State Farm Agent in Illinois. She works throughout the Hinsdale area including Willowbrook and Burr Ridge. In addition to helping people with their insurance needs, education and advocacy is part of her business model.

Giving back to the community is very important to Tina and she and her team do so in many different ways. Tina Tzinares State Farm was there to sponsor our Grand opening in November 2018, was a part of our Oktoberfest in the fall of 2019, and most recently sponsored our HHS Photos with Santa Paws event.

We have also been the beneficiary of State Farm’s Quotes for Good program. This support helps our animals so much and allows us to continue to grow programming throughout our communities.

To top it all off, Tina adopted our very own Princess Butterball in November and gave her a forever home just in time for the holidays. We have a feeling it’s the start of a beautiful friendship! We look forward to partnering with Tina and her team in the future and getting visits from Princess B. If you have any questions about her services, please visit https://tinainsuresme.com or call (630) 789-1866.

This is one GREAT dog. Three days of adjustment, and he totally took our hearts. He is very affectionate, COMPLETELY house-trained, and crate-trained. A soft chewer, in addition to toys, he has a fondness for the fringe of our Oriental rug.

All crate time is voluntary except when we leave the house. We're going to start him not crated alone soon.

Thank you so much for being there for these wonderful sentient beings. Adrian was an excellent "counselor," who was very professional and engaged with the dogs. The process was very smooth.

Gratefully yours, Judy and Mike B.
