WINTER ABOUT 2015 THE EAST YORKSHIRE CENTRE MAGAZINE

DEADLINE FOR THE SPRING EDITION IS SUNDAY MARCH 13th

TO YOU ALL

FROM THE EAST YORKSHIRE CENTRE COMMITTEE

2

EDITORIAL Well 2015 is just about over. Where do the years go?

Over all we didn't have a bad summer but it could have been

better. Running a holiday rally in Scotland made me appreciate

how much warmer it is in Yorkshire. When we moved to Stevenage for 3 years in the 80’s we noticed how much warmer it was down

there, but as we moved south, our neighbours had just moved in the month

before, from Portsmouth, and she was complaining how cold it was! Perhaps

those caravanners who spend their Winter in Spain have the right idea!

Can I suggest that all those who send write ups to Face Book also send them to me to put in the ABOUT. As I keep saying, marshals do like to know that the

hard work they put into a rally is appreciated.

Are you going to make any New Year Resolutions? If so, I hope you manage to keep them especially if they are of a serious nature, like giving up smoking. As a

non smoker I do not know personally how hard it must be but I am married to an

ex smoker and so I know it can be done if you really want to stop. In the early days Richard had one or two lapses

but did manage to break the habit

quite a long time ago now.

You could also make a less

serious resolution to send me a

rally write-up for the first time—a

lot easier than giving up smoking!!

Here’s wishing you all a Happy

Christmas and a Healthy and Peaceful 2016. Janice PS Hope you like the new pictures representing Sandra, Denis, Joan and me and thought

the one I have found for Matt was very appropriate!

PPS My thanks to John Bloom for many of the photos used in this ABOUT

CHAIRMAN’S CHAT Hello Everyone

Welcome to the Christmas edition of the About, a time of year I

enjoy, and love the festive fun celebrating Christmas and New

Year with family and friends

The 2016 Rally Books are being printed and all being well they will be posted

out early January. Thanks go to Denis, proof-readers, the rally sub-committee

and the brochure co-ordinator Dave, for all the unseen work in producing the

Rally Brochure.

Remember you can book East Yorkshire Centre rallies from 5th January. There

are some new venues this coming year so purchase plenty of booking vouchers

and book early to avoid disappointment.

Our 40th Year has been wonderful with an excellent 40th Birthday Celebration

Rally, I am sure memories will stay with us for a long time to come.

We also achieved great results at the Joint Yorkshire Sports, winning many medals, the Henrietta Spivey Memorial Trophy and Victor Ludorum Trophy.

Your continued support for the sports would be very much appreciated as we are

the Host Centre in 2016. With full teams for all sporting events, you never know we might win more trophies. It’s not just the winning it is taking part that

counts, but an added bonus if we do win!

Our Bonfire Rally was also a huge success despite the change of venue and date

and it was very well attended. The weather could have been kinder but this did not deter ralliers coming out and buying from the many different food stalls

before watching an amazing, spectacular firework display to music followed by

the massive Bonfire. The evening continued to either the green room on site with music by Denis or back to your vans to chill out.

With solid roads for you to drive on and off from was a great bonus and added to

making this rally a great success. It was a wise move the Committee made to

change the venue.

We have had lots of fantastic rallies throughout our 40th year and I’m sure you will not be disappointed in the coming year with many celebrating the Queen’s

90th Birthday including our Chairman’s Sports and Charity Rally with a Street

Party, so get out your Red, White and Blue. Lets have another great year!

Finally Trevor and I would like to wish you all a very

Merry Christmas, a Wonderful New Year and enjoy yourselves where ever you are.

CHARITY PAGE Firstly a very big thank you for your interest in the

Yorkshire Air Ambulance these last two years.

I have been quite overwhelmed as to how much you

have all supported it. I think it is one of the few charities that could affect

each and everyone of us. They do a fantastic job.

On the Saturday night at the AGM we had a raffle as our final fundraiser

of the year. All the prizes were donated including a cake made by Mandy

Fadden. Mandy makes cakes on request so if you ever

want a special one her phone number is Hull 708984

Another of the prizes was

a cushion made by Mary

Wooley to celebrate our

40th birthday. The lady

who won it at our May

Day Raffle was not from East Yorkshire and

she donated it back to re-raffle for our charity. Also

on Friday night, Doreen Worsnop handed over a

cheque for £458 which Malcolm had raised [before he

died in May] from his collection of cans etc.

As you all probably know by now during 2014/15 we

raised the fantastic sum of £5010. I thought we had done very well the

year before making £4,600 and would have a fight to reach anywhere near

that but because of our May Day Rally

Charity Events and a few other large

donations, we reached last year’s total and

then exceeded it! Sandra and I had great

pleasure in presenting the cheque to David

Hebden from the Y.A.A. [See Page 23 ]

You will also know by now that this year

we are supporting the Neonatal Unit at

Hull Royal Infirmary, nominated by Margaret & John Hearty. Our first

aim is to raise £2000 for two baby breathing monitors which they are

short of. Can we achieve this before we get to the Chairman’s Charity

Rally in June? I hope we can at least get enough for one!

P.S. I have put together another Quiz to see you through the Winter. There are 4

parts to it so something for everyone. Stop Me & Buy One! £2 Janice

Seeing that we are celebrating our 40th year, and seeing all the photographs at the Celebration rally, I thought it would be

appropriate to nominate someone who has been part of the East

Yorkshire Centre from ‘it’s birth’.

Viki Tripp took part in the move forward from the East Group to

the East Yorkshire Centre. She was around whilst the decisions

were made as to what design the flag should take and be part of the decision in

the design of the ‘Jewels’

Viki was very active in encouraging the children and young families to join in,

having two daughters who were part of the Teenage Committee.

Photographs show how busy and encouraging she was whilst being Consort to

Mike being in the Chair from 1983 to 1986.

From then till now Viki has kept herself involved with Children’s Sports and

Joint Yorkshire Sports. Also giving great support and encouragement at the

‘then called Track Tests’, now called Six Star Rally.

Viki came back onto the Committee in 2004 as the ABOUT editor and in the tedious role of PRO. In 2005 she moved positions into Secretary and

membership secretary where she was able to talk to new members.

From here Viki moved into the role of Treasurer for 7 years where she did a splendid job of keeping us all well informed of expenditure in a way we as

Committee could understand!.

At the Celebration Rally Viki and Mike celebrated attending 1,000 rallies, so, I

feel that Viki is very deserving of this

nomination, as in the past 40 years she

has been a support, encourager and not least a good friend to many people.

AGM through illness so she was presented

IT WAS WITH MUCH SADNESS THAT WE LEARNT IN EARLY NOVEMBER OF THE DEATH OF DAWN, THE DAUGHTER OF DOREEN & MALCOLM WORSNOP. DAWN HAD BEEN BATTLING CANCER FOR QUITE A NUMBER OF YEARS SO IS NOW AT PEACE AND

REUNITED WITH MALCOLM WHO DIED IN MAY. OUR CONDOLENCES GO TO HER HUSBAND ANDREW, HER MOTHER DOREEN, HER BROTHER MARTIN & HIS WIFE LYNNDA & THEIR SON BEN

DAWN when she was Teenage Chairman

with her brother MARTIN next to her

Dawn’s family would like to thank

everyone who sent condolence cards

and also all who went to the Church

Celebration of Dawn’s Life. It was very

much appreciated. They would also like to thank those who gave a contribution

to the Macmillan Nurses Fund

It was very sad to hear that Dawn Worsnop had passed away at the age of 53.

After becoming members of the East Yorkshire Centre, along with their

Mum, Doreen and Dad, the late Malcolm, Dawn and Martin became very

active in all aspects of the centre.

Dawn became chairman of the Teenage Group at the October 1980 AGM

followed by her brother Martin at the 1982 AGM.

Under Dawn’s leadership the Teenage section ran two rallies in 1981 one

at Eske in the April and one at Halloween at Woodmansey, the rally

booking fee in those days was £1 and the rally fee £1-30.

The teenagers also ran a winter disco in December and other discos

throughout the year along with a coach trip to Grimsby Leisure Centre,

they were a very busy group.

In those days the section had to fight for rallies at the rally planning

meeting which was held after the Formal dinner dance, once again with

Dawn’s tenacity they achieved their objectives.

The Teenage group under Dawn also was very active in Charity work

always supporting local charities such that they could see the results of

their hard work, a theme that the Centre still maintains.

As can be seen, Dawn was a very enthusiastic, hardworking and dedicated

member of the centre, significantly contributing to the Teenage section

and the Centre as a whole, she will be sadly missed by all who remember

her. Toni Martin [who was Teenage Liaison at the time.]

DINNER/DANCE AT YORK RACECOURSE Once again we were blessed with good

weather for the whole weekend. Numbers

were a little down on the usual this year but

many of those absent have said they will be

back next year.

Our guests for the Dinner were Christopher

Macgowan and his partner Faye. Christopher is the Caravan Club

Treasurer and he and Richard had a lot to talk to each other about.

The room looked great as you went in with

lovely arrangements on the tables

which were later given out in a

free raffle to one lady from each

table. We had visitors from

several other Centres as well as

our own East Yorkshire members.

The view from the balcony outside the function room is great

as you can see right across York and

beyond and is great for photographs.

The meal was very nice and was hot which is not

always the case at large functions. The speeches

were not too long so there was plenty of time for

dancing which was once more to Silhouette who

are mainly part of

the old band Pentagon who

played at our Diner

Dances, and other northern

centres,- for years!

The dance floor was full

for most of the night and everyone seemed to have a

good time. I certainly did and so did our guests who

managed a few dances even though they said [in their

words] “we are not very good at it” The raffle was drawn and our guests

gave me the bottle of wine they won, for our Centre Charity.

Thanks must go to Joan Baxter for the main organisation of the event and

also for assisting Joan & Geoff Kirk to run the rally [along with husband

Barry] You can come to the rally without attending the Dinner Dance but

why not give it a try next year? I don’t think you would regret it.

YORK RACECOURSE RALLY We arrived at the rally Wednesday as it’s a four day rally now, and the

weather was lovely and sunny. After lunch we had a walk with Sue and

Maurice, they know the area real well. Thursday we walked into York

through Rowntree Park and along the river into town, we did a bit of

shopping then had lunch at Betty’s (first time) ! We spent the evening

with a caravan full of friends and had some fun. Friday we had a drive out

to look at another caravan park and shopping

outlet and had lunch. There was an air

balloon flying over early evening then it was

back again early Saturday morning I took

some good pictures as it was very low.

Saturday I

had a glider

ride booked

at Pocklington Gliding Club, and the

weather was great, clear and sunny not

much wind either. John and I left in good

time, my ride was for 12noon. So after a

bit of delay I was towed off by a plane up,

up and away. We caught some good

thermals and we glided round Pocklington, Barmby Moor and the area for

over half an hour. We didn’t go to the dinner dance this year, so eight of

us had a meal in a local pub ( and it was very nice too). Sunday was

another lovely day so we had flag and gave out a few birthday cards and

anniversary cards, then a few catch ups with friends and then it was time

for our farewells .

A big thank you to the rally marshals, especially the two Joans. We

always get a good laugh with Joan Kirk and at the expense of Joan Baxter

she was on form !!! It was Joan Baxter’s birthday (we won’t say that it

was her 70th) so Joan Kirk had a good topic to play on. Sue Holroyd

A WORD OR TWO FROM OUR DINNER DANCE GUEST

Faye and I were honoured to be invited to join members of the East

Yorkshire Centre at the Autumn Dinner Dance. As I explained on the

evening, it is a rare event for the Honorary Treasurer of The Caravan

Club to be invited to anything at all – let alone a dinner dance!!

We had a wonderful evening in the stunning setting of York Racecourse.

The weather was perfect and that gave us views over the city which we

will both always remember; it is rare when you visit a city that you are

lucky enough to get such a commanding view from such a height.

York is a beautiful city as we all know but seen from the top floor of the

racecourse was very special indeed.

The evening was well attended and both Faye and I were made to feel

very welcome not only by Sandra, your Chairman, but by everyone

present. It is a great pleasure to see such an active Centre in full swing

and so well supported.

Thank you to everyone who made both the Saturday

and the Sunday so enjoyable; my only regret was that

I did not have time to sneak away and re-visit the

Railway Museum which, as a sad old train spotter, is

a favourite of mine. Christopher Macgowan

40’s Revisited at Middleton It was really sad to say farewell to the last rally

at Middleton on the 18th Oct 2015.

Thanks to Judith, Paul, Len, Mary, Paul, June,

Alan, Jean, Malcolm and Doreen and everyone for

their hard work over the years trudging up and down that hill

in all weathers siting caravans, doing the

soup kitchen and putting on an exciting and

fun social.

We have all had a good laugh dressing up in 40’s gear and enjoyed the events and parades

in Pickering and other villages along the

North Yorkshire Moors Railway line.

Thankfully, it is good to know that everyone

will still be able to enjoy ‘Uncle Albert’s

Museum’ (aka Paul Simpson’s amazing war collection) at

Beck Isle Museum in Pickering.

Unfortunately, we are not sure what will become of that poor

wee innocent evacuee and her babies, so keep an eye out for her in case you see her roaming around Pickering next year.

Love, Jim, Fiona, Finlay and Freya Kerr

PLEASE READ

Many people are unaware that if their partner doesn't pay tax they can apply to

have £1060 of their tax free allowance transferred to the person who does pay tax and thus pay £212 per year less in tax. To do this you need to go

to www.gov.uk/marriageallowance and follow the instructions.

It is quite simple to do and if you are entitled to this your tax rebate

will be back dated to April 2015 It is not a lot of money but if

you are entitled to it why let the tax man have it? [found in another Centre’s Magazine]

REEDNESS—OCTOBER

We have been to this venue for a number of years, both in August and

October and as a Marshal and as a Rallier and we still enjoy going.

Mainly for meeting with many long standing friends but also for the

lovely meal we get in the pub on the Saturday night.

There are now not as many boats going past the site as there used to be

but when one does go past there is a shout amongst the ralliers and many

of the men [or should I say Big Boys] go running up the embankment to

have a look.

The weather was quite good for the Friday night welcoming tea/coffee

and cake and we all raised our mugs in memory of Malcolm who used to

run the rally before handing it over to Paul with him & Doreen assisting.

Saturday dawned very wet indeed and we decided to have a relaxing day

in the van. Luckily the rain stopped in time for our walk to the pub for the

meal and was still dry on our return. Very sensibly Paul had Flag after the

meal in the warmth of the pub rather than risk the weather on Sunday

morning. This was followed by one of Paul’s infamous Quizzes which as

usual was much enjoyed with a lot of banter.

Paul and June were assisted by Andrew and Lynn Clarkson and to them

all go the thanks of all the ralliers. Janice Benson

POCKLINGTON CRICKET CLUB RALLY

October 30 - 1 November 2015

Rally Marshals — Paul and June Gillatt Ian and Val Brabiner

Thank you Paul, June, Ian and Val for giving us all a wonderful weekend away

with plenty of fun. The rally field was immediately opposite a new housing

estate, so for us nosey parkers it gave us an excellent opportunity of sneaky look around the show homes.

Later on after tea we met up in the clubhouse for drinks, a friendly

night all round as we switched from table to table playing “beetle” ,

Paul’s style, "i.e. the first player to construct a caravan.

Sandra Wright’s birthday celebration was also held on Friday evening, so oodles of cake was on offer with just a few

candles which Sandra managed to blow out with no spit!

Saturday nights flag kept our marshals very busy with a quiz, plus

serving food, a good old fashioned rabbit or chicken pie with dessert all home cooked by Judy Rickell in her CARAVAN. Judy’s cooking skills are

unsurpassed.

YES a lovely Halloween weekend enjoyable by all due to

Paul, June, Ian and Val’s hard work. Thanks from Jean Baker

15

HALLOWEEN AT POCKLINGTON

It was two weeks in a row for Paul & June but this time they were assisted by Ian & Val Brabiner. A lovely small cosy rally with

chance to chat as well as play Caravan Beetle on Friday night. We were also

treated to cake to celebrate our Chairman’s 65th birthday [kindly made by Judy

Rickell in her van on the rally!]

On Saturday night we started the evening with a meal [cooked by Judy] with a

choice of chicken or rabbit followed by crumble and custard. Great! A good job there was no dancing as we were all too full. This was followed by Flag and

once again we had one of Paul’s Quizzes as well as a picture Quiz. All good fun,

again with a lot of banter and interrupted a few times by a malfunction of the Halloween decorations which would not stay where they were put!

[Might have to try super glue next year!]

Thanks to Paul, June, Ian & Val for another good rally. Janice Benson

Our 100th Rally We were pleased to have the opportunity to celebrate our 100th Rally with our

good friends Judith, Paul, Mary and Len, together with all the other ralliers at Happy Valley on 17th May 2015. We toasted the occasion with an amazing,

unique, personalized, special cake, baked and designed by a lovely friend of ours.

Our caravanning days started 8 years ago at Thornwick Bay on 19th October 2007

and the Rally Marshals were Chris and Julie Wood and Co-Marshals our close

friends, Nicky and Richard Baker, who now live in Portland, Oregon. Our first rally nearly ended in disaster as electrics tripped and after enrolling help from

marshals and friends, checking fuses etc, it turned out my hairdryer had pushed

down the switch in the wardrobe.

Our so called friend Richard Baker, had us convinced that as New Ralliers we had

to make a speech at Flag, so when we were called up to be presented with our 1st

Rally Plaque, we nearly started to speak, but luckily Nicky Baker carried on

addressing the rest of the ralliers again. Freya was 18 Months old and Finlay was 5 years old. To this day we still have the same caravan, Elddis Jetstream, we would

be sad to part from it, too many memories.

Our 2nd Rally was Bonfire at Elvington on 2nd – 4th November 2007, but there

was an error made on the printing of the plaque and it was dated 2nd – 4th October

2007, so it looked as if our 2nd Rally was actually our first. The Rally Marshalls

were Paul & Judith Simpson (Chairman).

This bonfire was so large, that they nearly had to contact the fire brigade when the grass around the bonfire started to catch fire, but Fireman Paul Simpson and others

managed to beat it out.

We enjoyed 2 Rallies in 2007, 5 Rallies in 2008, 21 Rallies in 2009, 18 Rallies in

2010, 21 Rallies in 2011, 12 Rallies in 2012, 13 Rallies in 2013, 5 Rallies in 2014

and now 11 in 2015. We have had fun being Rally Marshals 7 times. Jim was on the Committee from

2010 to 2012 and throughout that time was Assistant Audio Officer, Assistant

Junior Liaison Officer, About Editor, Youth Group Liaison Officer, Tuck Shop, and Assistant Saleable Equipment Officer. Finlay was also part of the Youth

Committee for two years.

17

Over the years, we have been lucky to meet lots of other lovely people from Yorkshire Pennine Centre, Lincolnshire Centre, Mid West Yorkshire Centre,

South Yorkshire Centre, North Yorkshire, and

Durham Centre

We reached our 50th Rally in May 2011 at Old Earswick with the Marshals Paul & Judith

Simpson.

We received the East Yorkshire 20 plaque in 2009 and The Fellowship plaque in 2011.

We have had a laugh dressing up as Cowboys and Indians for Cowboys Rallies,

Cheerleaders for Northern Centre’s at Kirkby Lonsdale, Grim Reaper, witches and skeletons for Halloween Rally, won loads of

competitions, made lots of new friends and above

all made lots of wonderful and fun memories.

MIDDLETON WAR WEEKEND

We ran the 12th and final rally this year to co-incide with Pickering War Weekend. As always, it was an extra special rally with vans attending from 15

different counties ranging from Northumberland to Kent and everywhere

in-between. We also welcomed 18 families who had never been on a rally

before but had seen it advertised in the “temporary sites” section of the Club Magazine. This created many problems that normal rallies don’t have e.g. at one

point there were 6 x 12v batteries in our awning waiting to be charged!

Unfortunately, the rally cannot be run in the future as the field is now being

sectioned off with wooden fences so is no longer viable.

This was the first year that Mally & Doreen hadn’t been with us

so it was always in our minds how much we missed them. A

poignant tribute was paid to Mally at “Flag” by Jan Hicklin who

had attended all the 12 rallies and a framed photo was on

display all weekend. We’ve had quite a few “thank you” emails

and cards after the rally:-

“We want to thank you all very much for another most enjoyable

rally at Middleton. We appreciate all the hard work involved in running the rally and thank you all for making us so welcome

every time”.

Jan & Vic Hicklin (Autosleepers Owners Club, Chesterfield)

“Many thanks for running the Middleton War Weekend Rally. It just won’t be

the same”. Helen, Phil, Adam & Thomas Beasley

“We would like to thank you for a brilliant rally, and for your welcome and the way that you looked after us during our 5 day stay. Mary also gets a big thank

you. It was our first rally with the EYCC and one that leaves us with many happy

memories. It’s a pity this was the last rally at this venue”.

Pam & Bryan Nolan Brenda & Gerry Griffiths (Cheshire)

“Many thanks once again for another enjoyable 1940`s weekend,

Sadly, we learn that this will be the last one organised by Judith, Paul and

associated helpers because of the field usage which will be returned to livery for

horses. We have enjoyed making the journey from (Margate) Kent to Pickering. The town has such an atmosphere over the whole weekend. Special mention

must be made of Paul who helped us out in our hour of need with our leisure

battery. Should another location be found and organised by one or more

members of the Centre they can count on our support”.

Edwin and Jeannie Rosser (Kent)

19

“Many thanks Judith to you and all your team, we had a fantastic two nights with you, only made even better by the generosity of Tony and yourself providing

a taxi service to and from the Show-field”. Margaret and Brian Beck (Lancs)

WE’LL MEET AGAIN!!!

I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT A GROUP OF PROFESSIONAL PEOPLE POSED THE

FOLLOWING QUESTION TO A GROUP OF 4 TO 8 YEAR OLDS

WHAT IS LOVE? HERE ARE SOME ANSWERS.—[ I LEAVE IT TO YOU TO JUDGE IF THESE ARE

REAL OR IF THEY ARE MADE UP]

When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different. You

know that your name is safe in their mouth

Love is when a girl puts on perfume and a boy puts on shaving

cologne and they go out and smell each other

Love is what makes you smile when you are tired

Love is what is in the room with you at Christmas,

if you stop opening your presents and just listen

Love is when you tell a guy you like his shirt, then he wears it everyday

Love is when Mummy gives Daddy the best piece of chicken

Love is when your puppy licks your face even though

you have left him alone all day

Love is when my Mummy makes coffee for my Daddy and tastes it

before giving it to him, to make sure it is ok.

Love is when Mummy sees Daddy on the toilet and

doesn’t think it is gross.

My Life with the Robson’s

My name is Grant and I got passed to the folks in a

Bailey Madrid—- plenty of room for me but had to share with a few sheep from various parts of the

country. I was pleased that the hand over from family

Hearty was quick as it was raining !!

9th August I then travelled to a quiet spot, a Rally in

Dalkieth, a lot of trees but no rain. Ted and Jan took me to a loud place with many street performers-“The Edinburgh Fringe”, we were pleased when it was

time to get seated in the Castle ready for The Royal Edinburgh Tattoo. Wow—

the bagpipes make my fur stand on end! Perfect evening, dry, no wind and great

fireworks.

13th August travelling south away from the water of Scotland (we hope) Richmond and Warwick Club sites were the weather was dry! Ted and Jan went

to visit the Castle in Warwick and Wetherspoons (no place for Bears)

17th August—Looe Club Site in the sun —-looking promising; it lasted 2 days

—my view from the caravan window was blurred with running water, new

friends visited us with many different accents—no Scots. Ted and Jan visited

lots of National Trust Houses so they kept dry

27th back up north away from the rain ?? to the only pub called Freke Arms a

CL great to visit the family in Swindon.

2nd September we visited Avebury Manor —a must for NT card owners. 4th

September home to York and to sit in the garden in the very welcome warm

SUNSHINE !!

10th September I was left at home whilst Ted and Jan went to Jersey-I have no

YORKSHIRE AIR AMBULANCE

I was delighted to be presented, at last year’s AGM, with a cheque for £4600 that had been raised throughout the year by East Yorkshire Centre in support of

Yorkshire Air Ambulance. The good news didn’t end there. Not only was this

more than had ever been raised for a Chairman’s Charity but Yorkshire Air

Ambulance was chosen as the annual charity for an unprecedented second year. So it was that I returned to collect another cheque this year which at £5,010 was

even greater than before. I cannot thank you all enough for your support and

generosity. Where will that money go? Quite simply it will save someone’s life. The last financial year (April 2014 to March 2015) has been an exceptionally

busy one for Yorkshire Air Ambulance attending 1326 incidents where people

suddenly and totally unexpectedly found themselves in a life threatening

situation. As a result 808 patients received expert care on scene before being conveyed to hospital by road and a further 596 seriously ill or critically injured

patients were flown to Major Trauma Centres.

Yorkshire Air Ambulance has some of the lowest overheads of any UK Charity which means that at least 84p of every £1 donated goes directly into the

helicopter rescue service. Even so simply to maintain and fly the two helicopter

Air Ambulances that took part in all those missions last year cost £4.4m which is equivalent to £12,000 per day

The generosity of the people of Yorkshire combined with prudent financial

management over the past few years means that in Sept 2016 YAA will take

delivery of a brand new helicopter costing £5.8m. This will be a replacement for the older of our two aircraft and will allow YAA to continue to serve the

community which supports it. The aircraft fly at 160mph and whilst distance

naturally affects the response time on average it takes just 10 minutes to reach a patient and 12 minutes to fly them to hospital.

I would especially like to thank Janice Benson for her hard work as Charity

Coordinator and hope that you will continue to support her and of course Richard in their fundraising efforts this year for Hull Royal’s Neonatal Unit.

Despite being Caravan Club members since 1988 Sue and I had never been

affiliated to a Centre until we attending last Year’s Charity Rally at Hutton

Cranswick. We have now managed four rallies and particularly enjoyed the Celebration Rally at Driffield Showground. It was nice to be able to arrange for

a visit from one of our helicopters but the unpredictable nature of the Emergency

Services means that you can never be sure what will happen so it was a great relief when Helimed98 arrived about an hour or so later than planned. That Rally

also had a display of new Caravans from Wandahome of Knottingley that

resulted in Sue & I buying a new caravan from them a few weeks later. Work

commitments will restrict the amount of rallying we can do but we do look for-ward to joining in the activities of East Yorkshire Centre whenever we are able.

Travels of a little Bear

On the Burns rally in January, a Scottish Piper Bear was won by the

Grant team and was named Grant. The team were to each have Grant

for a period of time and to take it on their travels. We were passed the bear at the October Osbaldwick rally by Ted and Jan Robson to

keep till the 2016 Burns night. As the centre About is going to print for the New

Year edition we thought we would let you know where he had travelled for the

few week we have had him.

As he is staying in Bempton now, the rally at Staxton was only a short trip away

but he enjoyed his first rally with us. We couldn’t find room in our case as we

went to Lanzarote so he had to sit in our lounge keeping an eye on our

caravan. He had behaved very well whilst we were away and so we took him for a spooky weekend at Wykeham where he enjoyed trick and treating.

Last weekend we went to Spaldington but due to it being a wet day we could not

get a round of golf in. We are going to Holme on Spalding Moor next week and with Eggborough, Pickering, Xmas rally at Stockport with Cheshire centre and

then New Year at Driffield he is getting really excited with all the rallies

planned. At the 2016 Burns rally he will be going to stay with Mel and Anne who were

the Grant team leaders. These are just the bare facts. Derek and Sue Brice.

HUNMANBY, WYKEHAM & BONFIRE

On a cold and windy Friday afternoon we arrived at Orchard Farm Holiday Village. Mum and dad set up, while my brothers and I went to play on the park.

We had our tea, then we all went in the club house where Kevin put on a really

good disco, lots of prizes to be won for best dancers too....I never won tho...

The next day we met friends at Filey, our dog had a good run on the beach ,the

best bit was when we went to a fish shop & I had fish and chips .On the night we

went in the club house where I loved playing bingo, again I never won that too,

I really enjoyed this rally because after we had been to flag, me and my brother Robert went swimming—it was great we had the pool to ourselves.

I would like to thank Kevin, Annie and Bev and Craig for a great weekend .

I want my mum to book this one next year. Lewis Firth.

I was so excited to go on Witches and Ghouls of Wykeham, I had butterflies in

my tummy when we got in the car after school on the Friday night .When we got

there we had our tea, and then I went outside to play with my friends until it got dark. My mum took me to look in Steve and Maureen awning which was full of

Halloween decorations, it looked really good .

25

On Saturday we all went for a really long walk with my friends, it was good fun....I went to the park with my brothers when we got back, it was a bit muddy

but good fun . After my tea I had to put on my Halloween costume, I was

Dracula. My mum put face paint on me, and Adele Sweeney sprayed my hair

red ,to finish it off I put in my glow in dark teeth...To my delight I was picked and I was a winner....I won a trophy and some sweets....I went around the

caravans and looked at them all with my mum and dad. Lots were decorated

nice. I went around the caravans trick and treating with my friend Oliver and I got lots of sweets. I really, really did enjoy this rally...And I came away with a

trophy to show my school friends. Daniel Firth

This is my favourite rally ,because I love the fireworks and food. Friday night I

helped my mum selling sausage sandwiches. It was fun and we sold lots of them.

Denis put on a fab disco on the night in the club house, and I enjoyed Sandra’s games. On Saturday I got up really early to play football with my dad and my

brother Lewis .It was cold ,but good fun because I scored a great goal . In the

afternoon I made a really funny guy Fawkes with Lewis and Daniel

Kath had pens and paper and newspaper to help make the guy...Night time was

the best. I had some of Jane and Maureen’s noodles. I loved them....and then I had two hot chocolates from Kath and Dave’s stall throughout the night. I loved

them ,they kept my tummy nice and warm on the cold night. It was time to

watch the fireworks...What can I say but brilliant lots of nice colours in the sky and lots of bangs....I helped Lewis on the hook a duck stall, and you won a toy.

I enjoyed taking the money. We all went in the club house later on, and I was

dancing with my friends Oliver, Nancy, Evie and Matthew...I liked this rally so

much seeing all my friends. Thanks to the all committee for a great weekend

you were all very busy. Robert Firth

IN THE AUTUMN EDITION I WROTE ABOUT GUY FAWKES AND I HAVE BEEN TOLD BY JUNE & RAY SMITH [from Hollym] THAT TWO OF HIS

CONSPIRATORS— JOHN & CHRISTOPHER WRIGHT CAME FROM EAST

YORKSHIRE AND WOULD I WRITE SOMETHING ABOUT IT.

SO I LOOKED IT UP ON THE WEB! 16th JULY 2013

A sculpture commemorating East

Yorkshire's links to the Gunpowder Plot has

been unveiled. The 8ft tall statue of four of the plotters, including Guy Fawkes, has been

erected in Welwick near Patrington, to mark

the defeat of the Gunpowder Plot in 1605. Two of the conspirators, brothers John (Jack)

and Christopher (Kit) Wright, were born in the village. The sculpture, off the

B1445 near Plowlands Farm, was unveiled by Graham Stuart, MP for Beverley

and Holderness.

The Conservative MP said: "The Gunpowder Plot is a tale that we all know and

love and this statue is a stark reminder of the reality of an event that is now just a story we tell our children."Two of the men involved in the plot, Jack and Kit

Wright were brothers from Welwick and it seems fitting that their part in

shaping, or not as the case was, the governance of our country is commemorated

by the village." The fourth conspirator depicted in the steel sculpture is that of

Robert Catesby, the leader of the plot.

John Wright was born in 1568 and his brother Christopher Wright probably two years later in 1570.

Both of them went to St Peter's School in York,

which Guy Fawkes also attended.

The authorities saw the Wright brothers as dangerous

Catholics, although it is possible that John was not

converted until 1601. Both of them were arrested

under suspicion of conspiracy against the Queen in 1596 and, like Catesby and Tresham, they were involved in the Essex rebellion in 1601, and imprisoned.

They were jailed again as a preventive measure when Elizabeth was dying in

early 1603. John was the first to be initiated into Catesby's plans. Christopher was drawn into the plot later. After the discovery, both fled London with

Catesby and both were killed with him at Holbeach in Staffordshire. J.V.B.

A caller asked the Telephone Enquiries for a knitwear company in Woven.

Operator: 'Woven? Are you sure?'

Caller: 'Yes. That's what it says on the label; Woven in Scotland '.

EGGBOROUGH BANQUET

What a night ! Festive setting, festive music, festive food and festive people.

Thank you to Janice, Richard, Sandra, Trevor, Denis and to all the kitchen

helpers and waitresses, not forgetting Owen & family for the chocolates

A truly enjoyable night, despite the downpours!

It is hard work (believe me, I know) and without marshals there would be no

rallies to attend.. so keep up the good work. Chris Healey

I went to the cemetery yesterday to lay some flowers on a grave. As I was standing there I noticed 4 grave diggers walking about with a coffin,

3 hours later and they're still walking about with it.

I thought to myself, they've lost the plot!!

BONFIRE RALLY—DRIFFIELD

Susan and I had been looking forward to this Rally for some time, but the

horrible weather over the previous ten days made me worry a little.

We arrived early Friday afternoon with our muddy caravan. I was

immediately pleased that although we were on grass, the roadways were

hard, and our front wheel drive car had no trouble. We were soon set up

and meeting old friends.

Friday evening’s entertainment was indoors in the Green Room and was a

belated Halloween party for the children, who were obviously enjoying

everything. As the night went on we had a good time sharing stories and

the odd beverage with our East Yorkshire friends.

Saturday was spent in Driffield, looking at the shops and the inside of a

pub or two.

We then prepared ourselves for the evening, and what a lot there was to

do. There were so many different stalls selling a variety of food, drink,

tombola tickets and other stuff. Susan and I were soon quite full.

Food was followed by a brilliant firework display and then the lighting of

the bonfire.

Mustering our remaining energy we forced ourselves to revisit the green

room and had a great evening with friends, music & the occasional drink.

After a well attended flag, we had no bother getting off the

field and went home happy but tired.

A truly good rally – thank you once more East Yorkshire!

Pre Christmas Banquet and Dance—Eggbrorough

Many thanks for an excellent weekend, we really enjoyed ourselves.

Janice and Richard are a class act when the banter starts, neither one is

ever wrong and it’s very funny to listen to.

If you are hoping to shed a few pounds in weight this rally might be one

to avoid. We were entertained on Friday night with a supper and a quiz,

( we marked our own quiz but don’t tell Janice) still didn’t win even after

a bit of fiddling courtesy of Anne Claxton.

Doncaster came in handy for Christmas shopping on Saturday

Saturday night came with a full five course meal which once again was

cooked to perfection by Sandra & her crew. Brilliant teamwork with

excellent waitress service.

I sometimes wonder if East Yorkshire members are all going slightly

crackers. The late Pete Redman always blamed the glue used in caravan

construction for members actions.

Analysing Saturday night Denis got everyone on the dance floor, played a

record which caused everyone to carry out certain actions including

saluting, hands and arm movements, then feet and eventually sticking out

their tongues whilst turning around. Now if that doesn’t get you entry into

the nut house I don’t know what will.

To cap it all, this routine was led by our chairlady.

Thanks to you all for another enjoyable weekend Sue and John Dale

THE EGGBOROUGH RALLY MARSHALS WOULD LIKE TO THANK THE RALLIERS FOR HELPING TO RAISE JUST OVER £60 FOR THE

CENTRE CHARITY. [NEO NATAL UNIT AT HULL ROYAL]

£42 WAS RAISED WITH THE RAFFLE OF A DOG [donated by Sue Dale]

AND A TEDDY [donated by Chris Healey]

The dog was won by Gill Bradshaw & the teddy was won by Sue Exley.

£20 WAS RAISED BY THE SALE OF VARIOUS CHOCOLATE SELECTIONS

which had been put together by Sandra’s grandson Owen with some help from

his sisters and his Mum. Owen was disappointed not to have been able to come

to the rally as he usually does but he had been picked to play for the Hull under

13 Ice Hockey Team at Bradford . He has been picked to play for the Northern

Conference Team which is a great achievement. GOOD LUCK OWEN!

WE WOULD ALSO LIKE TO THANK DENIS FOR HIS CONTRIBUTION

TOWARDS THE SATURDAY EVENINGS ENTERTAINMENT WITH HIS

SELECTION OF CHRISTMAS DANCE MUSIC & HIS DISCO.

30

PRE CHRISTMAS BANQUET—EGGBOROUGH

It’s always good to join East Yorkshire at Eggborough Village Hall, and this rally was no exception. As usual, everything was well organised. The rally

marshals had even arranged for handy pools of water to cool our hot tyres, and

give our dog something to play in.

After setting up, we were soon in the hall for a few games, a hot supper and a

chance to chat with friends old and new. I must admit, Richard knows how to

get the most out of a bingo ticket. We must have had five games out the single

piece of paper, but I still won nothing!

Saturday afternoon was cold, blowy and wet. But we still managed to have a

good afternoon when we had family visitors from nearby Goole.

Saturday Evening’s pre-Christmas Banquet was simply marvellous. The food

was wonderful, the service excellent and the after dinner music and dancing kept us all well entertained until close. Susan and I never fail to be amazed at what a

great rally this is.

My only regret is that after two days with EYCC, I am on cereals and salad for

four days to get the weight off again.

Thank you East Yorkshire for yet another memorable weekend.

We look forward to seeing you all again at New Year.

Best wishes to all this Christmas Susan & Peter [Yorks Dales]

LAWYER STORY OF THE YEAR, DECADE,

AND POSSIBLY THE CENTURY! This took place in Charlotte, North Carolina. A lawyer purchased a box of very rare and

expensive cigars, then insured them against, among other things, fire.

Within a month, having smoked his entire stockpile of these great cigars, the lawyer

filed a claim against the insurance company.

In his claim, the lawyer stated the cigars were lost 'in a series of small fires.' The insurance company refused to pay, citing the obvious reason, that the man had con-

sumed the cigars in the normal fashion.

The lawyer sued - and WON! Delivering the ruling, the judge agreed with the insurance company that the claim was

frivolous. The judge stated nevertheless, that the lawyer held a policy from the company,

in which it had warranted that the cigars were insurable and also guaranteed that it would

insure them against fire, without defining what is considered to be unacceptable 'fire' and

was obligated to pay the claim. Rather than endure lengthy and costly appeal process, the insurance company accepted

the ruling and paid $15,000 to the lawyer for his loss of the cigars that perished

NOW FOR THE BEST PART...

After the lawyer cashed the cheque, the insurance company had him arrested on 24

counts of ARSON!!!

With his own insurance claim and testimony from the previous case being used against

him, the lawyer was convicted of intentionally burning his insured property and

was sentenced to 24 months in jail and a $24,000 fine!

This story won First Place in last year's Criminal Lawyers Award contest.

IS OUR SCHOOLING THIS BAD?

The following questions were set in a recent GCSE examination in the U.K.

These are [supposed to be] genuine answers (from 16 year olds)

Q. Name the four seasons. A. Salt, pepper, mustard and vinegar.

Q. Explain one of the processes by which water can be made safe to drink

A. Flirtation makes water safe to drink because it removes large pollutants like

grit, sand, dead sheep and canoeists.

Q. What causes the tides in the oceans?

A. The tides are a fight between the earth and the moon. All water tends to flow towards the moon, because there is no water on the moon, and nature abhors a

vacuum. I forget where the sun joins the fight.

Q. What guarantees may a mortgage company insist on?

A. If you are buying a house they will insist that you are well endowed.

Q. What are steroids ? A. Things for keeping carpets still on the stairs.

Q. How can you delay milk turning sour ? A. Keep it in the cow. (Simple !)

Q. How are the main 20 parts of the body categorised? e.g. The abdomen

A. The body is consisted into 3 parts—the brainium, the borax & the abdominal

cavity. The brainium contains the brain, the borax contains the heart and lungs

and the abdominal cavity contains the five bowels: A, E, I, O and U.

Q. What is the fibula? A. A small lie.

Q. Give the meaning of the term 'Caesarean section'.

A. The caesarean section is a district in Rome.

DID YOU KNOW? People can now sing the song Happy Birthday To You in public without fearing that they will have to pay royalties.

In September a judge in the United States ruled Warner/

Chappell Music Inc no longer owns the copyright on the

iconic song. The music publisher had previously collected

royalties on the track after buying the firm that owned the copyright in 1988.

The song's lyrics were first written down in 1911 and the music and words were

first published together in 1935. Under US law, copyright remains on a piece of music for 95 years after it is first published. It states anyone performing a piece

of music within copyright who is deemed to have an audience, has to pay the

publisher. Warner/Chappell's hold on the copyright was challenged by a documentary maker who was making a film about the history of the song. Good

Morning To You Productions Corp claimed that the track was "dedicated to

public use and in the public domain.

A US District Judge has now decided that the song's original copyright, obtained

by the Clayton F Summy Co from the song's writers, only covered the tune's

musical arrangement and not the lyrics. According to Guinness World Records, Happy Birthday To You has the most famous lyrics of any song in the English

language. The song is also sung in numerous other languages around the world.

THE TRAFALGAR SQUARE CHRISTMAS TREE The Trafalgar Square Christmas tree has been donated to the people of

Britain by the city of OSLO each year since 1947. The tree is prominently

displayed from the beginning of December until the 6th January. It has been

an annual gift to the people of Britain as a token of gratitude for British

support of Norway during the Second World War.

The Trafalgar Square Christmas tree is typically a 50 to 60-year-old Norway

spruce, generally over 20 metres tall. The tree is cut sometime in November

during a ceremony attended by the British Ambassador to Norway, Mayor

of Oslo, and Lord Mayor of Westminster. After the tree is cut it is shipped to Great

Britain by sea. The tree is decorated in a traditional Norwegian style and adorned with

500 white lights. At the base of the tree stands a plaque, bearing the words:

This tree is given by the city of Oslo as a token of Norwegian gratitude to the people of

London for their assistance during the years 1940-45.

WHY DO WE CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS ON DECEMBER 25TH?

No one knows the real birthday of Jesus! No date is given in the Bible, so why do we

celebrate it on the 25th December? The early Christians certainly had many arguments

as to when it should be celebrated! Also, the birth of Jesus probably didn't happen in the

year 1AD but slightly earlier, somewhere between 2BC and 7BC

The first recorded date of Christmas being celebrated on December 25th was in 336AD,

during the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine (he was the first Christian Roman

Emperor). A few years later, Pope Julius I officially declared that the birth of Jesus

would be celebrated on the 25th December.

There are many different traditions and theories as to why Christmas is celebrated on

December 25th. A very early Christian tradition said that the day when Mary was told

that she would have a very special baby, Jesus (called the Annunciation) was on March 25th - and it's still celebrated today on the 25th March. Nine months after the 25th March

is the 25th December! March 25th was also the day some early Christians thought the

world had been made, and also the day that Jesus died on when he was an adult.

December 25th might have also been chosen because the Winter Solstice and the ancient

pagan Roman midwinter festivals called 'Saturnalia' and 'Dies Natalis Solis Invicti' took

place in December around this date - so it was a time when people already celebrated

things. The Winter Solstice is the day where there is the shortest time between the sun

rising and the sun setting. It happens on December 21st or 22nd. To pagans this meant

that the winter was over and spring was coming and they had a festival to celebrate it

and worshipped the sun for winning over the darkness of winter. The Roman Festival of

Saturnalia took place between December 17th and 23rd and honoured the Roman god

Saturn. Dies Natalis Solis Invicti means 'birthday of the unconquered sun' and was held on December 25th (when the Romans thought the Winter Solstice took place) and was

the 'birthday' of the Pagan Sun god Mithra. In the pagan religion of Mithraism, the holy

day was Sunday and is where we get that word from!

Early Christians might have given this festival a new meaning - to celebrate the birth of

the Son of God 'the unconquered Son'! (In the Bible a prophesy about the Jewish

saviour, who Christians believe is Jesus, is called 'Sun of Righteousness'.)

35

David Cameron the British Prime Minister, is being shown around a hospital. Towards the end of the visit, he is shown into a ward with a number people with

no obvious signs of injury or disease.

He goes to greet the first patient and the chap replies: "Fair fa' your honest

sonsie face, Great chieftain e' the puddin' race! Aboon them a' ye tak your place,

Painch, tripe, or thairm; Weel are ye wordy o' a grace as lang's my arm."

David, being somewhat confused (easily done) goes to the next patient and

greets him. The patient replies: "Some hae meat, and canna eat, and some wad

eat that want it, but we hae meat and can eat, and sae the Lord be thankit."

The third starts rattling off as follows: "Wee sleekit, cow'rin, tim'rous beastie, O, what a panic's in thy breastie! Thou need na start awa sae hasty, wi bickering

brattle! I wad be laith to rin an chase thee, wi murdering pattle!"

David turns to the doctor accompanying him and asks what sort of ward is this.

A mental ward? "No," replies the doctor, "It's the Burns unit."

THREE SISTERS

Three sisters age 92, 94 and 96 live in a house together.

One night the 96 year old draws a bath, puts her foot in and pauses.

She yells down the stairs, "Was I getting in or out of the bath?" The 94 year old yells back, "I don't know, I'll come up and see."

She starts up the stairs and pauses, then she yells,

"Was I going up the stairs or coming down?"

The 92 year old was sitting at the kitchen table having tea listening to her sisters. She shakes her head and says, "I sure hope I never get that

forgetful." She knocks on wood for good measure. She then yells,

"I'll come up and help both of you as soon as I see who's at the door."

PADDY AND MICK

Paddy and Mick were both laid off, so they went to the unemployment office.

When asked his occupation, Paddy answered, 'Knicker Stitcher.. I sew da elastic onto ladies' knickers and thongs..'

The clerk looked up Knicker Stitcher on his computer and, finding it classified

as unskilled labour, he gave him £80 a week unemployment pay.

Mick was next in and when asked his occupation replied, 'Diesel Fitter.' Since a diesel fitter was a skilled job, the clerk gave Mick £160 a week.

When Paddy found out he was furious.. He stormed back into the office to find

out why his friend and co-worker was collecting double his pay. The clerk explained, 'Knicker Stitchers are unskilled labour and Diesel Fitters

are skilled labour.'

'What skill?' yelled Paddy. 'I sew da elastic on da knickers and thongs, then

Mick puts 'em over his head and says: 'Yep, diesel fitter.' from John Dale

MY LAST LOOK BACK AT OUR NEW YEAR RALLIES

I think it would be remiss of me not to mention all our assistant marshals

by name. I can do this because I have a little book in which I wrote all the

marshals names, all our fancy dress themes and all the games we have

played and dances we have done over the years. Some marshals helped us

for at least 2 years and some for a few more and some came back for a

second helping as you might say. Richard & I would like to thank them

all—alas there are some who are sadly no longer with us!

Our first helpers at St Peters School were Tony & Hilary Martin, then

Brenda & Mike Nicholson, Bob & Carol Hardy, Rob & Kate Woods,

Mike & Barbara Allan and Sue & John Dale [who were also the first ones

at Askham Bryan too along with John & Joan Spikings.

Then came David & Verena Firth, Michael & Ann Ritchie, Sue & Steve

Edwards, Peter & Jennifer Dibb, Stuart & Dot Smalley, Sandra & Trevor

Wright, Alan & Jean Thacker, Fred & Janet Hughes, Margaret & Brian

Danby, Angela & Tony Peacock, John & Muriel Bloom, Don & Jean

Tomlinson and Dave & Chris Healey [who were also the link to

Eggborough] where we also had Ann & Ted Robson, Brian & Margaret

Danby, Tim & June Norris,

Greg & Suzanne Clarkson and Sue

& Maurice Agar.

[Hope you have enjoyed this nostalgia trip

as much as we have] Janice & Richard

A blonde driving a car in America, became lost in a snowstorm. She didn't

panic however, because she remembered what her dad had once told her.

"If you ever get stuck in a snowstorm, just wait for a snow plough to come

by and follow it." Sure enough, pretty soon a snow plough came by, and

she started to follow it. She followed the plough for about forty five mins.

Finally the driver of the truck got out and asked her what she was doing.

And she explained that her dad had told her if she ever got stuck in a snow

storm, to follow a plough. The driver nodded and said, "Well, I'm done with

the WalMart parking lot, do you want to follow me over to Best Buy ?

Why did no one bid for Rudolph and Blitzen on Ebay? Because they were two Deer

THE RABBIT IS ASSOCIATED WITH

LONGEVITY AND THE MOON. SOME

ASTROLOGERS IDENTIFY THIS SIGN

AS THE CAT, NOT THE RABBIT

BUT CHINESE ASTROLOGERS ALWAYS REFER TO IT AS THE RABBIT OR HARE.

THE DRAGON IS THE ONLY MYTHICAL ANIMAL IN THE

CHINESE ZODIAC, IN CHINA, DRAGONS ARE ASSOCIATED

WITH STRENGTH, HEALTH, HARMONY AND GOOD LUCK.

THEY ARE PLACED ABOVE DOORS OR ON THE TOPS OF

ROOFS TO BANISH DEMONS AND EVIL SPIRITS.

THERE ARE FEW ANIMALS WITH MORE SYMBOLIC ASSOCIATIONS THAN

THE SNAKE. CHINESE MYTHOLOGY HOLDS THAT A HALF HUMAN SNAKE

WAS THE FATHER OF THE CHINESE EMPERORS. IN THE WEST THE SNAKE

IS SEEN AS EVIL, BUT IN CHINESE ASTROLOGY THE SNAKE IS

ASSOCIATED WITH BEAUTY AND WISDOM.

Chinese New Year is an important Chinese festival celebrated at the turn of the Chinese Calendar. In China, it is also known as the Spring Festival, the literal

translation of the modern Chinese name. Chinese New Year celebrations tradi-

tionally run from Chinese New Year's Eve, the last day of the last month of the

Chinese Calendar, to the Lantern Festival on the 15th day of the first month.
