    fined evening style.

    2. Artsy playCombine prints that are worthy of gilded frames for a fashion-forward look.

Grown-up and elegantly realised in a pencil skirt, the op-art print complements

the Monet-inspired patterned top and jacket perfectly.

    3. Modern mademoiselleWhen a cinched shimmering coat is teamed with a sequinned mini, you get ladylike with a youthful twist. Gem-decorat-ed gloves, ballerina ats and a tote bag further bestow timeless grace.

    Shes graced the cover

of VOGUE, inspired abest-selling handbagand been portrayed

    by top photographers. When

it comes to marrying musicand style, Lana Del Rey is, byall denitions, the top of the

pops. Yet, just two years ago,

nobody knew who this Amer-ican singer/songwriter was.

Now shes the star of H&Mslatest campaign.

It really is her. Lana Del Rey steps into theber-cool Wythe Hotel in Brooklyn andshe is absolutely gorgeous. She is tiny, slight of frame, and, apart from her fasci-nating charisma equal parts innocent girland adult seductress the 26-year-old iswearing a crisp mens shirt, a varsity jack-et, blue jeans and blue Converse high-topsneakers. Slightly dressed down from themore glamorous, urban and slightly sexierlooks weve come to recognise her for and which she has herself described asGhetto Mongasque, Gangster NancySinatra or Lolita Lost in the Hood butnevertheless a stunner.

Ive never really had a defned style,

she explains over a hot drink in a quiet, thoughtful voice.

million YouTube hits. Lana Del Reys

immediate success came, rst and fore-

most, from the unique, nostalgic, yet

fresh sound shed managed to create.

I like to write about the way things used

to be and paint pictures of my memories

with beautiful words and melodies, she

says today of her hit album Born to Die,

which has topped the iTunes charts in 19

    different countries.

I wanted the record to sound dark and

glamorous and remind me of the hot

    summertime. [My producers] lled the

tracks with lush strings and sound effects

like cicadas chirping and girls laughing.

The music and DIY footage mightve set

things in motion, but soon the singers

signature look was as well-known as her

songs. The clothes could vary, but the

bouffant hair, bee-stung lips, long acrylic

nails (painted blood red on the day of our

interview), even longer fake lashes and

layers of shiny jewellery were always allthere.

I know more about jewellery than I do

about fashion, Lana Del Rey condes.

And I love emeralds and diamonds.

When asked about her style icons, she

cites Lauren Bacall as a huge inuence.

I wear lots of jeans, white Oxford shirts

and white tennis dresses. I also love beau-

tiful diamonds and long acrylic nails.

And that is perhaps the secret behind Lana

Del Reys success, both musically and as

a trendsetter. Focusing on the classic icons

    of the Americana wardrobe/songbook,

she can pick and mix the best of differ-

ent decades. She will draw on inuences

from jazz, folk and pop in her songs. And

wear pieces inspired by the 1920s, 1950sor 1960s, for both men and women, when

    performing them.

It is almost unimaginable now, but just a

few short years ago, the incredible Lana

del Rey was still an unknown singer, try-

ing to get by in New York City without a

    proper place to stay.

Back then, she sang jazzy folk and pop

    at open-mic nights around Williamsburg

    and the Lower East Side.

Then on 1 July 2011, a sweet, melan-cholic clip set to a sad song about pas-

sionate love entitled Video Games landed

on YouTube the supernova that was to

become a global phenomenon had been

set in motion. Video Games was straight

    out of Lana Del Reys creative universe;

it was she whod edited the pictures of old

Hollywood and of herself singing. Five

months later the clip had spawned 20

    with LANA DEL REY

    TOPMAN(as seen on www.blog.topman.com)

The holidays are ast approaching and its

time to do your holiday shopping! Shop-

ping or other people is hard. Its not like

shopping or yoursel, is it? Quite oten,

thats what it turns out to be. Admit it,

youve gone present hunting beore and ended up

with more stu or yoursel than or other people.

We all do it. What you need is a starting point, and

were here to go through every type o person

you need to buy or this Christmas.

We start o with one o the toughest ones: the

music mogul. Stuck on what to buy the person who

just listens to records? Well, orget the boring and

impersonal download vouchers, we are here to give

you suggestions thatll be music to their ears.

What better way to show o the band that you love

than wearing it right on your chest? Here we have a

ew examples or every type o music lover. For the

indie guy we have a white Kasabian tee, or the hip

hop obsessive we have Run DMC T-shirt, and orthe classic rocker we have a unique Jimi Hen-

    drix printed stubs T-shirt.

Mens suits back then are pretty much what suits

are based on now. Theyve just gotten a bit slimmer,

thats all. Even the poorest o people wore some

sort o smart attire back then, so youve got no

excuse. An example o classic style can be ound in

the double breasted navy hopsack suit. Traditionally

adorned by gangsters in most TV shows and mov-

ies, but has always been the epitome o class.

Other popular items that will show o the gentle-

man lying dormant in you is the Topman Design ur

coat, an ideal purchase or your winter wardrobe. A

edora hat is also a welcomed addition to any

smart outft, which i put with some paisley braces,

    works wonders.

    BEYOND THE HYPE:BLAKE JACOBSEN

Blake Jacobsen is an 18year old art studentand blogger of TheStyle Manual from L.A.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and

    where you live.

My name is Blake Jacobsen and I am an

18 year old photographer, blogger, and

art student. I recently moved to Los An-

geles, California after spending much ofmy life in a coffee shop planning an es-

cape from the Midwestern United States.

(You would have done the same!) The

golden cornelds that once painted the

interior of my bedroom windows have

suddenly been replaced by a vista of

smog and power lines, with Los Angeles

    skyline ornamenting the horizon. Living

in Los Angeles has revealed a plethora of

inspiring new outlets. It has been rather

overwhelming trying to sink my teeth

into it allboth guratively and literally!

    *Self-diagnosed food-addict here!*

    Im currently studying photography at

the Art Center College of Design, with an

emphasis on fashion and editorial coordi-

nating. Apart from my artistic endeavors,

Ive grown a fond liking towards coffee,

cats, 90s music, and astrology. Of course,

everything is subjective to the fact that

Im still a work in progress. My interests

    have become relatively ubiquitous.

Unfortunately, that episode didnt air until

a later time. (And by that, Im referring to

sixth grade.) In school, my peers mocked

me for how I dressed. They didnt un-

derstand the inspiration and vision that I

was channeling when getting dressed in

the morning. I embraced solitude and be-

gan cultivating creativity from their acts.

Looking back, I now wholly appreciate

those awkward stages. They have devel-

oped my character; each being a step in

a ladder that Im still climbing. Now, I

no longer wake up and envision what theworld would approve of me wearing. I

dress myself not giving the slightest f***

what people think. That is what I nd

    most important.

How do you describe the fashion scene

in Los Angeles compared to other ma-

    jor cities/fashion capitals?

I must say that I am extremely impressed

with the fashion scene! I havent yet vis-

ited other major cities or fashion capitals,

    so Im unable make a valid comparison;

however, the fact that not every individu-al I come across on the street is a valley-

girl (or bro) brings me great pleasure.

A fashion rule you never break:

Dressing according to my body type. I

wont step a foot outside of my house if I

feel self conscious of what I am wearing.

I wouldnt do that to myself. You have to

be condent in what youre wearing.

    What are your passions?

With age, Ive become passionate about so

    many thingshowever, nothing trumps

    my passion for photography. Photogra-

phy has enabled me to create images that

have the potential of evoking a billow of

emotions when one is stricken by the bit-

    tersweet nostalgia that accompanies the

reality of a photograph. When capturing

moments such as these, its as if Im testing

the laws of time by prolonging instances

that cannot be revisited. Nothing has everconsumed me quite like photography has.

In terms of my facetious interests, I par-

ticularly enjoy reading and writing in the

    bathtub with my BFF, Adele.

How did you rst get interested in fash-

ion and why is it important?

I view fashion as another component to

my artistic and personal brand; a creative

outlet, allowing me to author an immedi-

ate impression on others. However, noth-

ing happened overnight. My sense of style

was once associated with whatever facetof life I was most consumed by at the

time. In fourth grade, when I self-identi-

ed as Ash Ketchum, I wore unbuttoned,

collared shirts with cuffed blue jeans. I

spiked my hair and kept a Pokdex in my

messenger bag! My ensemble would have

been complete if it werent for the fact that

I couldnt wear a baseball cap to school

I also recall a distinct phase when I only

    wore orange clothing.

What do you think is the most recent notable

trend to appear/reappear, and what are your

    thoughts on it?

Flare jeans. I cannot entertain the idea of why some-

one would want their legs to appear wider.

What is the most underrated item in menswear

    and womenswear?

In menswear, hats are utterly underrated. Ive

noticed most men dwell over their hair, when in

reality, a simple hat generates far more effective

    of an aesthetic.

    In womenswear, undergarments: bodysuits, garter

belts, and corsets. Subtle accents of lingerie are in-

credibly necessary (and sexy), in my opinion.

Your favorite colour(s) of the moment are:

    Black!

What is your next must have purchase?

Black, leather, wing-tipped ankle boots. They

would go flawlessly with the black slim suit I

    dont yet own.

What is the ultimate showpiece in your closet?

My leather biker jacket. I feel as though a part of me

is missing when not wearing it. Leather seriously

has a very special place in my heart!

In the year 2016 you will be:

Comfortably situated in a loft apartment someone

deep within the hollows of Brooklyn, New York. By

then I will have earned my degree in photography,

and hopefully working diligently to earn a name for

myself within the industry. I will have two cats: one

white, one black. The walls of my apartment will

be lled with poetic, black and white photos, all of

which I have taken. My coffee table will be home

to a pile of books lled with the notorious works

of Annie Leibovitz and Tim Walker. By then I will

have a Keurig coffee brewer. And if not, then I have

failed and no longer deserve to live.

What would you say to someone seeking

    fashion advice?

Find what best suits your body then expand upon it.

Nothing is instantaneous, so be prepared to invest

time in personalizing a style that quintessentially

parallels your character. It will prove enigmatic at

rst, but will be absolutely worth in the end. Mark

Twain once said, Naked people have little or no

inuence on society. Aim to inspire.

    I fndblackto be far

    more poetic than color.
