WELCOME to the Winter 2010 Community Program GuideWELCOME to your first community program guide! WINTER 2010

This program guide is a supplement of The Newsy Neighbor. It is a non-profit community service that is funded by local sponsors. The design, print and distribution of the guide is done by The Newsy Neighbor.

All non-profit groups and clubs will be able to advertise their available programs at no charge 3 times per year. If your business is offering a program that you would like to have in our guide, please contact us for rate information.

Every year, we will have the winter edition available in January covering all the programs offered between January and April. At the beginning of May, we will publish the spring/summer edition covering all the programs offered be-tween May and August, and the fall edition will be available at the beginning of September covering the programs offered between September and December.

After speaking with a local Recreation Program Coordinator about their advertising needs through The Newsy Neigh-bor, we discovered there is no magazine or paper that focuses JUST on the community events, programs and clubs offered for youth, adults and seniors in our areas. Especially something they could all advertise in for FREE. Since The Newsy Neighbor already mails to all the homes and businesses in Strathmore, Chestermere, Langdon, Carse-land, Delacour, Shepard, Lyalta, Dalemead, Standard, Conrich, Rockyford, Balzac, Cheadle, Nightingale, Namaka, Speargrass, Gleichen, Irricana, Rosebud, Kathryn, Keoma RR5, RR6 & RR7, we took this as an opportunity to fill the need of a magazine that JUST focuses on these important aspects of the community, and developed this Community Program Guide. This guide will also be available at various businesses, town halls and community centres in these locations.

We hope you enjoy this service and we welcome any suggestions or feedback from you for our upcoming (May and September) editions. Please feel free to phone Aleesha Presley 403-519-4559 or email [email protected].

Have a wonderful day!Aleesha Presley, Kathryn Hartwell & Denise Geremia of The Newsy Neighbor

ADULT & FAMILY PROGRAMS Kids and Drugs: A Parent’s Guide to Prevention is a set of parent workshops designed for use in communities across Canada. The workshops are directed at parents who are concerned about pre-venting their children from using drugs.Four - 2 hr WORKSHOPS. Tuesdays – 7:00-9:00pm. March 2, 9, 16, & 23LOCATION: Wheatland Family Commu-nity Support Services. Pre-registration is REQUIRED. For REGISTRATION and INFORMATION contact CATHERINE WALSH Ph: 403-901-1326 Why the program is important:Parents are a major influence on their chil-dren, whether they realize it or not. They are powerful role models, and they know their children better than anyone else does. Par-ents are therefore in the best position to cre-ate a consistent and positive environment for their children and to provide them with the skills they need to cope successfully when al-cohol and drugs appear on the scene.Schools and community agencies can also have an important influence on the lives of young people. Therefore, parents may need to work in partnership with them to ensure that their children do not use drugs. Most young people don’t end up abusing drugs. But they are being exposed to alcohol and drugs and are being asked to make choic-es in this regard at increasingly earlier ages. The risks are there because we live in a world where alcohol, tobacco, and other types of drugs are well accepted and peer pressure to experiment is sometimes intense.Because the consequences of using drugs can be significant, it is important for com-munities and families to know the facts and try to find ways to effectively manage these risks. Effectively delivered workshops on drug prevention that are specifically designed for parents can yield tremendous results in any community.

Our focus is mainly rhythm and blues but can cover a wide spectrum. We also try to promote up and coming local talent by having a local art-ist open for our events. Organized as a non-profit society, we have support from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts and some local businesses and organi-zations. We currently have a long term goal, along with other interested groups, of getting a cultural centre with performance space for the town of Strathmore. Alternately, questions may be di-rected to Catherine Walsh (403) 901-1326. We are always seeking community partners to assist in developing and implementing creative strategies for our community.

STRATHMORE

HEAL Our Future..Healthy Eating Active Living.A small coalition of Strathmore residences began meeting two years ago to find ways to promote and build a healthy community. This movement was inspired and supported by the Alberta Health Services Strengthening Commu-nity Action unit. The idea was to form people and representatives of community stakehold-ers into a coalition which would design and implement local initiatives that promoted healthy nutrition and physical activities. In order to determine what was needed the group surveyed people in the community to get a baseline of eating habits and physical activity as well as to discover what needed to be ad-dressed. It became clear that residents needed information about healthy nutritionChoices and physical activities that were afford-able and realistic; walking seemed to be the an-swer to physical needs. In February 2008 and 2009 the Winter Walk Day was promoted by inviting people to walk theTown’s pathways, choices and physical activi-ties that were affordable and realistic; walking seemed to be the answer to physical needs. In February 2008 and 2009 the Winter Walk Day was promoted by inviting people to walk the town’s pathways, streets and parks on that day. In 2010 Winter Walk will be held on Feb. 10th beginning at 12:00 noon at the Bank Ath-letic Club. We urge local banks and businesses to challenge each other to see how many can get out walking on that day or throughout the week.In the Summer of 2008 HEAL began to work on plans to launch a program aimed at more walk-ing called Locomotion, named after our historic connection to the founding of Strathmore by the Canadian Pacific Railway in which their lo-comotives regularly pulled trains through town. The Coalition has advocated for additional

pathways in the community and has mapped walking paths identifying distances between points. A map for walkers is found on the Town’s website at Strathmore.ca. We en-courage walkers to register on the website in the” Walk For The Heath Of It” where daily steps can be tabulated. In September HEAL launched the “Walk to the Olympics” chal-lenge and will award prizes for those who walk the farthest by Feb. 12, the opening of the 2010 Olympic Games. On Friday, Jan. 15th HEAL will sponsor the “Great Skate” at the AG Society Grounds in the Winter Lights display skating rink. Prizes and refreshments will be given out to skat-ers. A skate exchange is being organized for those who want to trade in old skates and/or pick up used skates. Home Hardware will be the drop off and pick up depot. All skates being turned in will be sharpened before go-ing out, thanks to the generosity of Home Hardware. “When it comes to walking, it’s all good” says Mayo Clinic researcher James Levine, M.D. Ph.D. and a Mayo clinic expert on obesity. “You don’t have to join a gym; you don’t have to check your pulse. You just have to switch off the TV, get off the sofa and go for a walk.”Anyone interesting in joining HEAL or learn-ing more about it may contact Robert, MediaSpokesperson at [email protected] by Robert Breitwieser, Coalition Member
