Dear Lincoln County Community,
When good works are performed on a continual basis over a long period of time, such efforts don’t get noticed readily. I believe that many who work at OCCC contribute to the exemplary works of your com-munity college.
I agree with one of our former students who expressed that we have a “Sweet college.” Why this procla-mation? Well, he experienced good instructors, services that addressed student needs, cordial and knowledgeable staff, good facilities, and social camaraderie amongst students.
Last year, we serviced a greater num-ber of individuals (180) and increased the number of hours taught (7.2% increase) than the previous year! This increase is in contrast to the overall 4.7% decline in Oregon community college enrollment.
The College serves many types of people. High school students, retirees, business owners, individuals who are strengthening their English language skills, and students who have their sights on transferring to four-year
institutions utilize the College. The College also prepares individuals to earn their GED and to be college- and work-ready, through Adult Basic
Skills and Adult Education. Others pursue a specific course of study such as Aquarium Science, Nursing, Criminal Justice, Medical Assistant or Certified Nurse Assistant.
If you know any OCCC students, encourage them to complete their goals.
Maybe you know someone who could benefit by the positive learning environment at Oregon Coast? If so, call 541-265-2283 and we’ll lend assistance. Remember, we have a “Sweet college” that will get even “Sweeter.”

While this introductory course focuses on Devils Lake, it will provide some foundation for students interested in volunteer water quality moni-toring conducted elsewhere by local watershed councils and other non-profit organizations.

writing effective grant proposalsPreparing successful grant proposals to receive funding from
corporations or foundations requires careful research, meticu-lous preparation, and graceful writing. Grant administrators tell us that many grant requestors have no real understanding of the proposal writing process and as a result, their worthy causes lose out.
If you learn how to avoid the errors that lead to the rejection of your proposal, you will be better prepared to help the causes you most admire. This course will walk you through all of the essential steps--including an important discussion of what you must do when the grant arrives!
intro to microsoft accessTake control over your data! Whether you’re a novice or an
experienced database user, this course will show you how to harness the full power of Microsoft Access 2010.

‘‘I took an ed2go class to learn how to use InDesign. The content of the course and what I learned was well worth the price. I am now proficient in InDe-sign, something that I never could have achieved by
myself in six weeks. This course helped me to upgrade my skills so that I could utilize software available in my office and create professional-looking documents for various purposes. I highly recommend ed2go courses for those who are interested in enhancing their professional skills.
– Hallie Price, Newport
I supervise the student workers in my department and recognized my need for some professional de-velopment related to this task, so I signed up for an ed2go course called Fundamentals of Supervision
and Management. Through this course, I learned how to communicate expectations more effectively, how to main-tain department motivation, how to evaluate employee performance, and how to uti-lize my employees’ strengths. In the Fall 2013 term, these student workers helped the College successfully host an outreach event at OCCC – “College Nights” – and we were all pleased with the result. The ed2go class allowed me to know what to delegate and when to be more involved.

MARkETING• Collect and record the one key element to successful marketing in the Internet age.• Recognize a hidden aspect of marketing that, when mastered, can drasti-cally improve operations and delivery.• Know the answer to the question, “Why should I choose you?” by develop-ing your Unique Value Proposition.• Build customer trust and loyalty... and, while you’re at it, a better commu-nity for Lincoln County.
hUMAN RESOURCES• Effectively build a supportive team at work and at home.• Create manuals and checklists so that you can manage effectively.• Build a business that complements your life and that builds wealth for your retirement
Over the course of a three-term academic year, our participants receive:• Ten one-to-one, two-hour meetings with their SBM leader• Meetings with an informal support group of a number of other SBM members• Nine SBM-I classes, plus access to more than 21 SBM Advanced classes attended by your business peers.
The SBM program is open to existing businesses. Pick the one that’s right for you!
Our new isBM program features in-depth technology-focused classroom instruction, and one-on-one counseling opportunities, along with traditional business education content. Led by Misty Lambrecht and Ron Spisso, the iSBM is the latest iteration of this powerful, cutting edge business education program.
sBM i focuses on businesses in the early stages of development by con-centrating on financial management and moving owners from a checkbook mentality to understanding financial statements. sBM ii assists growing and mature businesses by helping owners increase market share and concentrat-ing on developing efficient systems that result in higher profit margins.
The cost of the program is $900 a year. All small businesses will qualify for local, state and national scholarships that typically bring the yearly cost down anything from zero dollars, to between $200 and $400, depending on funding from our sponsors.
If you would like more information about the SBM program, contact the Small Business Development Center at Oregon Coast Community College, at 541-994-4166 or 541-487-4855, to request a free one-hour interview to see whether this program is for you.
