I started organizing and writing this newsletter in February 2014,

hoping to get it out by mid-March. Stuff happens and here it is

May already and I am only now finishing up and getting ready to

email distribute the final product. Why the delay?

So many exciting things began to happen at The Caring Place that

I needed to wait for a lull in activity to finish this product.

As you will read, we have begun a year-long rebranding project. It

started with a mail-out to all churches in the Regina area at the

end of January that included a letter and our new brochure. We

have already seen a major increase in new clients.

Next we began to plan for our Thank You breakfast, researching

which churches have supported us since Jan. 1, 2011 and sending

out invitations.

We have also been organizing the Mayor’s Luncheon for Mental

Well-being, which we are very pleased to have Mayor Fougere

hosting this event once again. It is such an important means of

educating the public regarding mental well-being.

Dr. Sam Berg, counsellor Derek Voegeli and I are scheduling

meetings with pastors to talk about what The Caring Place can do

for people in their churches.

We will once again be providing practical sessions to students at

the Learning Disabilities Association of Saskatchewan, starting in

June. Topics include: anger management, dealing with depres-

sion, taking responsibility in relationships, and others. We are

very pleased with this partnership and know that the students

have benefited as well.

In April I celebrated four years at The Caring Place. While I believe

very strongly in the work we do here, I have often struggled with

our financial situation. I am excited that we now have some mon-

ey in the bank and the opportunity to increase our client load (we

are at about 60% capacity) and become financially stable.

I am looking forward to doing our Rebranding work and seeing

what we can accomplish. I am looking forward to seeing what The

Caring Place can become as Regina’s only faith-based non-fit pro-

fessional counselling centre.

In 2013, Look Matters, a full-service marketing agency, took an interest in The Caring Place and provided some pro bono work to help the organiza-tion get back to its purpose for existing. Since al-most its inception, The Caring Place has struggled financially, depending very much on donations to keep the doors open.

This “rebranding” exercise involved many hours with Looks Matters, discussing what The Caring Place is, how it functions, and how it is organized. Out of this came a “First Look” report that suggested that The Caring Place get back to why it began—to provide faith-based counselling services as an assist to pastors. The Caring Place counsellors see clients with issues too severe, too detailed and too long-lasting for pas-tors to have the education or time to handle effectively. So The Caring Place is here to help. By referring hurting people to The Caring Place, the organization is able to lighten the burden of the pastor and pro-vide serious, sometimes long-term, help to individuals, couples and families.

Look Matters questioned whether The Caring Place Board and staff were spending too much time trying to woo business donations and not enough time strengthening relationships with the churches of Regi-na—all the churches.

Using the report from Look Matters, staff at The Caring Place developed a plan to implement the recom-mendations, starting January 2014 and carrying through the year. Most of the projects detailed in the

Peter Dyksman was a good friend to many faith-based charities in Regina, including The Caring Place. The Dyksman Family Foundation was established in his memory, to assist in the work of these organizations.

The Caring Place is pleased to have received a grant from the Foundation to implement our rebranding as “providing faith-based counselling.”

Thank you to the Dyksman Family Foundation for your generosity and commitment to The Caring Place.

plan entitled Back to the Future: Rebranding, Refocusing, Reigniting are time intensive for staff but not frivolous or costly. Some of the work, like revamping the website, is al-ready underway. This new format for Connections has also been in the works for some time. The major projects in this plan are as follows:

Strengthening relationships with evangelical churches

Developing relationships with mainline churches Acknowledgement and appreciation to partner churches Educating the faith community regarding mental health

Delivering mental health information to homes Rebranding, refocusing and reigniting The Caring Place to be the counselling place of choice for southern Saskatchewan will take considerable time and effort. We are confident, however, that our efforts will be successful and that The Caring Place can become financially stable in 2014.

Congratulations! Congratulations to counsellors Derek and Cindy Voegeli on the birth of a son on April 24, 2014. Frederick Adolph Voege-li IV is a brother to three year-old Regan.

Derek and Cindy began their work with The Caring Place in the fall of 2012 as interns from the Briercrest Seminary Mar-riage and Family Counselling program. After completing the intern-ship and graduating with their Masters degrees, they stayed on to become part of the counselling staff.

Cindy will be taking some time off, with new interns Lola Miller and April Mativo taking on Cindy’s client load. Cindy has been very involved with the SEARCH (Student Energy in Action for Regina Community Health) partnership at Four Directions Health Centre on Saturdays. She has also been involved with other partnerships, including Regina Alterna-tive Measures (RAMP), Ministry of Social Services and Fami-ly Services Toronto.

The Caring has a few needs where readers can possibly help.

1. We have some wiring issues and need a qualified electrician to do some rewiring for us.

2. We need someone to help keep our front yard tidy and weed free.

3. We occasionally have materials to fold and stuff.

4. Our main computers need a “tune up.” This hasn’t been done for at least four years. A Microsoft trained professional could certainly do this for us.

5. We have need of one or two good lap top computers for counsel-lors to use in their offices. Currently counsellors are using their own computers, bringing them back and forth from home. The computers are needed for online EAP notes and billing.
