Since Lucy has been working in Winton as a Chaplain, she has worked in the breakfast club, she has played lots of handball, sat with sad students who need to decompress during class, dressed up in all sorts of colours and costumes and helped to make the Halloween scary maze. She has had pastoral conversations with kids about friendship issues, bullying, domestic violence, women's issues and assault. She's set up a safe space for kids to come in during their lunch time and runs a Science/Lego club for kids who need extending. She's been teaching mindfulness and running the Brave program for kids with anxiety. All of this working 2 days a week. Funding for Chaplaincy is Federal Government 11 hours per week. All other funding comes from the Chaplain and supporters. If you'd like to support the Winton Chaplaincy Service by working or donating, please contact [email protected]. WINTON BOARDERS NEWS Article submitted by Tina Elliott

In the final wind up towards the end of term, and for

some Year 12’s, the end to their schooling nearly

hitting the rear-view mirror, we take this time to

acknowledge and reflect on their time of learning.

Awards Day and Valedictory Dinners are to be held in

the coming week – we wish all Year 12’s the very best

of luck and look forward to each of their stories next

week with anticipation. Congratulations to Noah Fogarty for his awards received this week for

Most Useful Cricketer and Seconds Best and Fairest in Tennis.

Chelsea Turnbull, Matilda Searle and Faith Fogarty will all be participating in the “FREEDOM

Dance Sets the Soul Free” Dance Performance in Charters Towers for the up-coming weekend.

Tyler Godfrey played in the Under 15’s 7’s Rugby Union Competition in Townsville. They had 3

wins and 1 draw but from the draw they did not make the final – Tyler made one try - good on

you, Ty!

Piper Godfrey and Jasmine Elliott’s touch football team are playing this week semi-final good

luck, girls.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Dear Editor

I wish to respond to the small historical piece on page 7 of the Winton Herald dated 6th

November and headed “Pioneers of Winton”. Because some of the statements are inaccurate

the following information may be useful.

To quote Peter Forrest in Vision Splendid, “Confusion of the historical record has been caused

by the fact that most of the early pastoral ventures were undertaken by syndicates, family

groups or other associates who joined together to claim country and then form and operate

stations. .….. There were often changes of membership of the syndicates as men changed

plans and withdrew as new members joined…… The sequence was fluid, fast moving and

complex especially among the Manifold group.”

It is not easy to obtain information of who lived where one hundred and thirty years on from

that time and it is even more difficult to know who resided at any address for a period of time.

We do know that any who served on the Winton Divisional Board (which preceded the Winton

Shire Council) lived in the shire.

James Nisbet did reside on Oondooroo for four years, but in his memoirs, he describes his

residence as a “grass hut” and one of his reasons for selling out was to move into better

premises. While his name may have appeared on the run of Rangelands among others, he did

not live there, but certainly ran stock there as it was one of his registered runs.

I have seen no evidence that Euston Blomfield resided on Sesbania or Oondooroo. Sesbania

was owned by Manifold, Bostock and Co and managed for forty years by John Bostock who

lived there until his death and is buried there.

Sir Samuel Wilson was a wealthy Victorian pastoralist and an early investor in Elderslie. I have

seen no evidence that he ever lived at Elderslie, though he may well have visited it several

times, as Elderslie employed a manager.

Vindex, was owned by Chirnside Riley and Co. and was initially managed by JB Riley, also first

Chairman of the Winton Divisional Board. Following the premature death of JB in 1889

management of Vindex may have passed to RL Chirnside as FW Riley lived in Winton and was

involved with a stock and station business.

A G Fraser was the managing partner in a group who purchased Manuka in 1882 and he lived

there for sixteen years before returning to Scotland suffering from ill health. It had been his

intention to return to Manuka, but he died in Scotland in 1898. He was a valuable member of

the Winton community, serving on the Winton Divisional Board and one time Chairman.

Ramsay Brothers purchased Oondooroo in 1886 and RC Ramsay managed it for the

partnership for about 20 years, living on site for most of that time. Three of his brothers, AD,

MF and N at times served on the Winton Divisional Board, which required them to live in the

shire. Ramsay Brothers purchased Elderslie in 1896 and sold it in 1912.

The Winton District Historical Society is always keen to acquire new members and new

information, so if anyone in our community is interested in local history and sharing

information about our past, please make contact with me or any of our members.

Yours sincerely

Bruce Collins

President, Winton District Historical Society and Museum Inc.

The grasshopper plague has been bad but is

abating.

In addition to eating the grass, they have

stripped fruit and fodder trees and ring

barked them.

A man who was at Conn Waterhole reports

that the hoppers ate his mattress ticking, a

green mosquito net, books and papers and

are dying in millions, the stench drove him

from his camp.

VALE – MIDDLETON HALL November 2021

Unfortunately, during storms of the past

week, the evidential demise of the

Middleton Hall has occurred. Many great

stories from families involved with

Middleton and the surrounding district are

coming to hand – we are looking to

collating some of these and coming back to

you with many good yarns of the days that

have been.

Using logic and reasoning you must fill the remaining empty cells in each of the 12 puzzles with a digit from 1 to 9, such that each digit from 1 to 9 appears:

✓ exactly once on each row ✓ exactly once in each column ✓ exactly once in each of the

nine delineated 3x3 squares.
