Digital door lock is an electronic locking system operated by the combination of digital key, security password or number codes. This  paper presents a prototype of the  proposed system and shows a scheme for the implementation. To implement the system with ZigBee network protocol, four types of modules are developed, ZigBee module, digital door lock module, human detection module, and ZigBee relay module. ZigBee module is designed to support wireless sensor network and also used for the ZigBee tag to identify the access objects. Digital door lock module is implemented as a digital consumer device to control the access system as well as locking system. It is very convenient system for the consumers and has extensible and flexible characteristics. That is, it can be used as a home security system by the ZigBee network with additional sensor devices. Therefore, it can be a good  practical product for the realization of an access monitoring and control system. It also can be applied to the real market  for home networking system. Furthermore, the system can be extended to another service such as a connection between mobile phone and home networking system. 1 . I. INTRODUCTION Home network is a residential local network, and is used to connect multiple devices within the house or apartment. It may consist of a broadband modem, a router, PCs, a wireless access point, entertainment peripherals, and other electronics. It allows users to remotely monitor and control consumer electronics through the external network such as Internet. Until recently, the home network has been greatly getting a lot of attention in both commercial and research sectors. The home network has become the network of consumer related electronics for various useful applications such as entertainments, telecommunications, automation systems, and remote control and monitoring systems. Owing to the rapid growth of personal computers and the Internet, high advanced telecommunication technologies, the importance of the home network has increasingly emphasized in the both domains. 1  This work was supported by the Seoul R&BD Program. Since it is in early stage market, there are little practical  products for the home network [1]-[3]. There are two methods, wired and wireless, in order to realize home networking system. Compared with the wired method such as Ethernet, PLN, HPNA, wireless system  provides more flexibility, extensibility, and is free from construction works since it requires no cabling works [4]. Although many of wireless network solutions, such as Bluetooth, ultra broadband (UWB), Wireless Ethernet, and many more, are in the area of home networking, ZigBee, a newly developing protocol for wireless sensor networks based on the IEEE 802.15.4 specification [5]-[6], has become the most attraction technique in the research and commercial domains because of open standard, low-cost, and low power characteristics [7]-[11]. Therefore, comparing to the other wireless technologies, ZigBee protocol is suitable for system environments, which demand less power consumption and lower data-rates requirements [8]. There are a lot of possible ZigBee applications. Some of them include home and building automation, traffic control and management, industrial control and monitoring, environmental monitoring, medical sensing and monitoring, and so on. As the cost of wireless sensor network devices falls down, many new applications are able to  be made [12]-[13]. One of the practical applications is the access monitoring and control system [14]. This system allows  privileged users to access a service, and manages monitoring and control tasks. It will be used in various useful applications such as entrance and exit control systems, home security systems, and car parking systems. Digital door lock has been one of the most popular digital consumer devices replacing a lot of conventional types of locks because of the user convenience and affordable price. It is a kind of electronic locking system that operates by the combination of digital key, security password or number codes providing higher secure protection with reliability over the conventional locking systems. Therefore, it is a good digital device appropriate for checking the access information and controlling the door on or off because everyone has to access to the door lock to go inside or out. We propose a novel system for the access monitoring and control based on digital door lock that uses ZigBee sensor network. By adopting this system, users can be provided with the safe and convenient life. The objective of the research is to develop a prototype system with a wireless module and a digital door lock providing one of the practical ZigBee network applications. Implementation of the prototype shows the proposed system can be a good practical solution of an access monitoring and control system.
