WIRED USB
Overview
Plug/play standard for peripheral devices.
Standardized by the USB Implementers forum.
Technical Details
Host/slave connections• PC(host) manages all the transfers; peripherals(slave) just respond.
• Supports 127 devices per host.
Physical connections
• Four wire connection :Two wires for power (+5 and GND).Two
wires (twisted pair) for synchronous serial data
Wired usb
Technical details(contd.)• Computer supplies power (upto 500ma)
Data rates– Low Speed: 1.5 Mbps (Keyboards, mice, etc.)– Full Speed: 12 Mbps (USB1.1 max speed)–Hi-Speed: 480 Mbps (USB2.0 max speed)
Wired usb
Why wireless usb?
Wired issues
Wires are restrictive.
Multiple wires can be a hassle.
Current wireless solutions inadequate
Bluetooth: Offers low b/w which is not enough for higher demand
applications (Video, HDTV, Monitor)
WiFi
– Expensive
– Too much power usage for mobile devices
Wireless usb
On February 17, 2004, at the Intel® Developer Forum, Intel
Corporation and other technology industry leaders announced the
formation of the Wireless USB Promoter Group.
The group includes Agere Systems, HP,Intel, Microsoft Corporation,
NEC, Philips Semiconductors and Samsung Electronics.
New wireless extension to USB. It reduces nest of wires.
Allows peripherals to be connected without plug-in-cards .
It is based on the Ultra wideband technology which operates in the
range of 3.1 – 10.6 GHz.
Wireless usb
FEATURES No use of wires, i.e. wireless network Offers data rates of 480 Mb/s at 3 meters and 110
Mb/s at 10 meters. Unidirectional/ bidirectional operations Multipoint to point connectivity Robust performance in noisy environments Interfaces with any other devices that supports
Bluetooth/ Wi-Fi/ WiMax without any complications.
Wireless usb vision
Wusb topology
WUSB is a hub and spoke topology.
Connection is point to point and directed between the WUSB
host and WUSB device.
Logically, maximum 127 WUSB devices can be connected to
WUSB host.
Each host forms a cluster.
Clusters can co-exist with minimum interference.
Topology also supports dual role model.
Wusb technology
Features of UWB Speed/Range
• Scaleable speeds up over 1 Gbps• Currently 480 Mbps at 3 m; 110 Mbps at 10 m
Frequency: 3.1 GHz to 10.6 GHz• Divided into 14 bands; 5 groups
– Each band is 528 MHz wide– Uses the OFDM technique to transmit data– Provides protection against multi-path / interference
• Band Groups 1 & 2: Longer range apps
• Bands Groups 3 & 4: Shorter range apps• Bands can be turned off to accommodate for conflicts or for
regulations
Wusb technology
Power Power is limited due to usage of wide spectrum Low power for mobile devices and minimum
interference
WUSB SECURITY DESIGN
Overview– Strongly stressed in WUSB specification and outlined in its
own requirements document– Security needed due to crowded environments– Two major components: Association and Encryption
Association– Overview
• Device must first associate with the host in a one-time event• Accomplished via wired verification or numeric association
– Wired Verification• Cable is attached between devices.• Exchanges a unique 384-bit identifier known as the
“connection context”
Security design(contd)
– Numeric Association• Devices associate wirelessly• User must enter a hex code manually
Encryption– Data encrypted with the AES 128 algorithm– During each session devices derive a session key based on
“connection context”– Wireless data is encrypted using session key
Advantages
Speed : Delivers high speed of upto 480 Mbps at 10 feet
and 110 Mbps at 30 feet.Power management : Sleep,listen wake and conserve
modes ensure devices use minimum power.
Security :WUSB devices encrypt their data transmissions.
Ease of use : Offers same plug and play as wired USB but more convenience due to wireless connection
Backward compatibility : Apps built for USB work with WUSB also.
Wusb approaches
Freescale’s cable free USB
Wireless usb hookups happen via a dongle.
Dongle exchanges signals with a usb hub plugged into a peripheral.
Dongle can be fit into a normal usb 2.0 port
Intel Corp’s Certified Wireless usb
Makes use of hub and spoke model.
Wireless usb hub and devices with integrated wireless usb
communicate with a single host.
Wusb implementations
Belkin Cable Free Hub Belkin demonstrated the prototype of the cable free hub in 2006 at the
international consumer electronics show in Las Vegas in January– Released Dec, 2006– Dongle attaches to PC– Speeds up to 480 Mbps
GeFen HMDI Extender Based on WiMedia Alliance specification Range of 20 meters; data rates up to 480 Mbps Frequency band: 3.1 - 4.8 GHz
Seagate Wireless USB Hard Drive 2.5 inches wide Speeds up to 480 Mbps
Conclusion
Next gen wireless personal area networkAppears well designed; good supportSlow start of products
Will it really catch on? More products need to be developed
Promises a lotSecurity is very important
