TRANSCRIPT

WIRELINE TOOLSTRING COMPONENTSWeatherford Completion Systems actively encourages the application of a systems approach to completion operations. This is preferred to anapproach in which individual system components are considered separately. This philosophy is reflected in the various parts of the Petroline™range of equipment in that they are based on the belief that there are two core principles to address in achieving successful well servicingoperations. The first principle is that the well design must be optimized to allow reliable completion installation and subsequent well servicing. The Uniset™ flow control range reflects this principle in the provision of equipment and techniques to achieve optimized well design. The secondprinciple is that a range of innovative products and techniques must be employed to broaden the existing operating envelope of well servicingtechniques. The Petroline™ toolstring range is an example of this. These two principles combine to form a systems based approach to wellservicing. When this systems based approach is applied operational success is achieved by applying a combination of good well architecturedesign coupled with the deployment of innovative, high quality equipment.

The design remit of wireline toolstring components was to develop enhanced deployment systems for well intervention operations. There is nowa substantial range of unique wireline tools offering improvements in speed, strength, safety and overall performance. Key to these improvementswas the introduction in 1987 of the QLS™ quick lock system to replace traditional sucker rod connectors. Now firmly established as the leadingsystem of its type QLS™ is in use all over the world and has become almost an industry standard. As technology has moved ahead so has theintervention scope broadened. To meet the challenges this generates there are developments on-going to address the well servicing challengesgenerated. The wide acceptance of extended reach and horizontal wells presents unique challenges for well servicing and has lead to thedevelopment and improvement of equipment to suit.

Long seen as an area of low technology and in many instances regarded as a “necessary evil” well intervention is now becoming recognized asfundamental, when properly executed, to enhancing well performance and thereby optimizing return on investment. The toolstring range hasbeen at the forefront of this changing perception and the products that have been developed are generally regarded as the leading edge inintervention technology. This capability now forms a significant building block allowing Weatherford to provide an integrated approach to the “lifeof well” cycle from drilling to abandonment. By meshing with our other drilling and completion capabilities we are able to provide significant benefitsto the end user by understanding the impact of each discipline on the next.

FISHING EQUIPMENTWeatherford Completion Systems has established a reputation as the market leader in specialist wireline fishing tool design. These designs provedto be stronger and more reliable than the previous generation of tools. The ultimate test for these tools has been their use with the Heavy DutyWireline Fishing Service. Using 2-1/16” toolstrings, impact forces in excess of 150,000 lbs are achievable.

Weatherford Completion Systems operate 6 Heavy Duty Wireline Fishing packages, 3 in the North Sea and 3 in the Gulf of Mexico. In additionto the established products shown here, we can design and manufacture equipment to solve specific downhole problems. A separate Heavy DutyWireline Fishing Services brochure contains more information relating to this service.

RELEASABLE ROPE SOCKETThe Releasable Rope Socket can be utilized witheither slick or braided type wireline and isdesigned to release only in the event that thetoolstring becomes stuck downhole.

The device is activated by a drop bar which isdropped down the wire in a similar manner to ago-devil or snipper.

When the drop bar contacts the release trigger, the collet releases the lower fishing neck. Theupper housing and drop bar are retrieved tosurface leaving a clean fishing neck. TheReleasable Rope Socket is multifunctional in thatit can be used with both slickline and braided linemerely by changing the internal clampingmechanism.

STANDARD DROP BARThe Releasable Rope Socket (RRS) Drop Bar is utilizedto activate the release trigger of the RRS and allowrecovery of the wireline, drop bar and RRS upper sectionfrom the wellbore. The drop bar is available to suit allwire sizes and can be fitted with centralizers based ontubing size.

ROLLER DROP BARThe Releasable Rope Socket (RRS) Roller Drop Baris utilized to activate the release trigger of the RRSallowing recovery of the wireline, roller drop bar andRRS upper section from the wellbore. The drop baris available to suit all wire sizes and can be fittedwith rollers based on tubing size and any restrictionsin the wellbore. The roller drop bar is utilised wheredeviation affects the use of a standard drop bar.

TRIGGER GAUGEThe trigger gauge for the Releasable RopeSockets has 2 main functions:

The trigger gauge is utilized as a releasing toolto disassemble the RRS.

The trigger gauge is also utilized to confirm thecorrect positioning of the trigger assemblywhen the RRS is assembled.

ROPE SOCKET (PEAR DROP TYPE)The Rope Socket is a conventional slickline typeutilizing a brass wedge (Pear Drop) to attach thewire to the Rope Socket and thereby the toolstring. It is available in sizes from 1-1/2” to 2-1/2” asstandard although others are available on request.

ROPE SOCKET (BOWEN TYPE)The Bowen Rope Socket is designed for usewith braided wellservicing cable, usually from3/16” O.D. to 5/16” O.D.

An industry standard with a proven track record, the use of variable cutter slips allows the wireto be cut at the Rope Socket in the event thatthe toolstring becomes stuck downhole. Asstandard, slips are available to cut 50% and80% of full tensile wire strength.

2 PIECE ROPE SOCKETOriginally designed for use with Weatherford’sHeavy Duty Fishing Service, and used with braidedwellservice cables, the 2 piece Rope Socket utilizesa shear pin which acts as a predetermined ‘weakpoint’.

In the event that the toolstring becomes stuckdownhole, a sustained overpull will shear the pinallowing the upper section of the Rope Socket tobe retrieved exposing a ‘clean’ fishing neck.

QUICK LOCK SYSTEMQLS replaces traditional sucker rod toolstringconnections. This allows for toolstring make-upand break-out times to be radically reduced.More significantly, the use of QLS connectionsremoves a safety hazard from the operation.Using QLS connections there is no longer theneed to use wrenches when making up toolstring.

WIRELINE STEMWireline Stem is used to provide the weight required toovercome the well pressure working against the wire inorder to 'lower' wireline tools into the wellbore. This massis also used to generate impact force whenperforming jarring operations downhole.

Stem is available from 1" O.D. to 3" O.D. with a varietyof fishing neck sizes, lengths and connections.

KNUCKLE JOINTKnuckle Joints are used to provide flexibility inwireline toolstrings and are available in a varietyof designs. The knuckle joint has always beenregarded as somewhat of a weak link in thetoolstring and therefore the Petroline knuckle jointhas been redesigned to address this problem.

The hemispherical bearing surface of the knucklejoint takes all the compressive load generated bydownward jarring, reducing the fatigue factorscommonly seen by 50%. Extensive testing, combined with the quality of the design gives asignificant increase in strength over comparableproducts and also increases working life.

HEAVY DUTY SWIVELThe Heavy Duty Swivel has been developed toensure free rotation of downhole wireline assemblieseven when the toolstring is held in significant tension. Utilising friction reducing Beryllium Copper insertsthe swivel will rotate freely even when under 2000lbs load.

Also capable of withstanding high impact forces itis suitable for use with the latest generation of highimpact jars. By preventing build up of torque in thetoolstring the chances of damage being caused tothe wireline /well service strand are significantlyreduced.

ROLLER STEMRoller Stem is used in higher deviation wells to minimizetool friction on the tubing wall by providing rolling contact.Petroline Roller Stem’s unique design offers a numberof benefits over traditional roller stem.

l Rollers incorporate phosphor bronze wearbushings to reduce friction and minimize bindingdue to corrosion.

l Welded pins offer much higher retention security.

l Geometric spiral of rollers ensures full, ratherthan edge, contact of rollers and improvesperformance.

l Minimal roller projection outside of body O.D. reduces leverage across pins when restrictionsare hit downhole thereby reducing possibility ofpin failure.

l GSM Nylatron roller versions available suited tooperation in plastic coated tubulars.

ADJUSTABLE UPSTROKE JARThe Petroline Adjustable Upstroke Jar (PAJ) wasintroduced in response to an industry demand for higherdownhole impact forces. The original ‘power’ jars utiliseda hydraulic by-pass system to create an instantaneousrelease of wire tension resulting in an upward impact (jar). However the effective stroke of these jars limited theimpacts available and the tendency for seal failure duringprolonged use often resulted in serious downhole problemsif the jar “gassed up”.

Using a stack of disc spring washers, which is fullyadjustable gives the ability to simulate the function of ahydraulic jar but without the associated risk. The jar strokehas been lengthened to give an improvement in impactforce of up to 300% over hydraulic jars. These quantifiableimprovements combined with the jars rugged constructionhave made the Adjustable Upstroke Jar the first choicefor Operators and Service Companies worldwide.

EASY ADJUST JARWhere extreme jarring performance is required. Petrolinehave developed the Easy-Adjust Jar (EAJ).

The EAJ provides an even greater impact force that theAdjustable Upstroke Jar and is especially suited to jarringin high deviation wells.

Impact force can be adjusted without removing the EAJfrom the toolstring load.

JAR ACCESSORIESHydraulic Calibration Sub

This Hydraulic Calibration Sub is used to set up the PetrolineAdjustable Upstroke or Easy Adjust Jar. This allows the jarto be fully tested or surface prior to running in well.

Mechanical Calibration Key

The Mechanical Calibration Key is used to set up the PetrolineAdjustable Upstroke Jar.

ACCELERATOR SUBThe Petroline Accelerator Sub was first designed toaugment the performance of Adjustable Upstroke Jarsand uses disc springs as opposed to conventional helicalsprings. This offers a number of performance advantages.Although commonly run only when jarring near surface,Accelerators significantly improve the effectiveness ofall types of 'power' jars even at depth. By storing energywhen an overpull is taken, then releasing this energy atthe point where the jar fires, the mass of the stem onthe toolstring is 'accelerated' up to the point of impactand thus increases the force generated. As well asincreasing the jarring forces the Accelerator acts as ashock absorber, protecting the rope socket when jarringat shallow depths.

MECHANICAL (SPANG) JARPetroline Mechanical Jars are manufactured by 'Spang' inthe USA and are the original design which is now an oilfieldstandard. These jars are run directly above the downholetool in order to deliver an impact force, either upwards ordownwards, by manipulating the wireline. They can besupplied in various sizes and 'strokes' with QLS or SuckerRod connections as standard.

TUBULAR JARThe Tubular Jar is designed to deliver impact forces eitherupwards or downwards in the manner of a 'Spang' typejar. However it is normally only utilized for fishingoperations or when well conditions have had an adverseeffect on conventional 'spang' jars.

The primary benefit when fishing is that loose wire debrisin the well is much less likely to impede the operation ofthe tubular jar and occasionally the greater rigidity of thedesign can improve impact forces in certain wellconditions.

The design incorporates fluid by-pass holes in the bodyto optimize the velocity of the anvil to impact and is basedon the Petroline Adjustable Upstroke Jar in order towithstand extremely high impact forces.

HIGH DEVIATION TUBULAR JARThe current generation of power jars have enhancedupward jarring action, especially high angle. At highangles the use of a spang style mechanical jar can oftenresult in poor jar action downhole and poor jar 'visibility'at surface. Thus, a missing link in the system was areliable high angle mechanical jar. The HDTJ addressesthis deficiency.

l Robust ball races to reduce jar friction.

l Full diameter jar rod gives high tensile rating.

l Water jet cut slots to eliminate hydraulic dampingeffects.

l Debris ingress to jar body prevented.

l Matched to Petroline power jars.

The response from users of the HDTJ has been excellentwith the jar action described as being "superb".

KNUCKLE JARThe Knuckle Jar design is based on the unique PetrolineKnuckle Joint to minimize compression load on the stemand thereby reduce fatigue and extend working life.

Knuckle Jars are primarily used in fishing operations or atany time where the main mechanical jars in the string mayprove to be unreliable. Generally they are only used as aback-up in an emergency.

HIGH IMPACT INTEGRATED TOOLSTRING (H.I.I.T.)The High Impact Integrated Toolstring (HIIT) System has been developed to offer the maximumtoolstring performance in the shortest practical package. Traditionally when working below decks, height limitations have necessitated that toolstring configurations be compromised. Often this cancause severe operational difficulties resulting in failures. The H.I.I.T. systems consists of:

l Releasable Rope Socket.

l Upper Spring Roller Centralizer.

l Accelerator / Stem Combo.

l Lower Spring Roller Centralizer.

l Adjustable Power Jar / Tubular Jar Combo.

l Fluted Centralizer.

In a conventional toolstring these components would be over 27 feet in length. The HIIT is only6ft long when closed and 9ft long when fully open.

SPRING ROLLER CENTRALIZERDesigned to meet the increasing need for devices which improve wireline operationsin high angle wells, the SRC has already been widely used in wells of more than80 degrees deviation. SRCs are positioned strategically in the wireline toolstringto provide complete rolling contact with the tubing wall. This removes all sliding forces, giving the following benefits:

l Vastly improved high angle well servicing.

l Increased jarring capability.

l Reduced damage to plastic coated tubulars.

l Improved centralization.

Both the SRC and HIIT form part of the Petroline range of Rolling Systems equipment.More detailed information on the Rolling Systems equipment range can be suppliedby your Weatherford representative or by referring to the Rolling Systems HighAngle Well Intervention brochure.

Should additional weight be needed large diameter stem sections are optionallyavailable. Due to the use of Spring Roller Centralizers HIIT equipment can be usedin wells with up to 80 degrees deviation.

GAUGE CUTTEROriginally developed for removing paraffin andwax from the l.D. of the wellbore, Gauge Cuttersare now commonly used to perform 'gauge' runsprior to retrieval of flow control devices and tocheck that landing nipples are not coated withdeposits such as scale or wax prior to installationof a wireline plug.

BLIND BOXA Blind Box is used to either beat down anyobstruction encountered in the tubing string orto cut (box off) wire on top of a Rope Socketduring fishing operations. Always ensure thatthe O.D. of the tool does not match too closelythe l. D. of any downhole restriction such as alanding nipple, as the lack of fluid by-passthrough the tool can cause 'sticking' problems.

LEAD IMPRESSION BLOCKLead Impression Blocks are used primarily infishing operations to identify what is uppermoston the fish. The L.l.B. consists of a steel housing, filled with lead which is dressed to a very smoothfinish prior to running. When the L.l.B. is on topof the fish, one downward jar deforms the leadwhich can then be interpreted at surface toindicate what is downhole.

MAGNETMagnets are used for retrieving loose metallicdebris from the wellbore and are available ina number of sizes. As well as standard tools itis also possible to source and supply highperformance magnets for special applications.

WIRELINE TOOLSTRING ACCESSORIES

TUBING END LOCATORThe Tubing End Locator is run whenever accuratedepth correlation is required at the lower end of thecompletion and is available in sizes to suit all weightsof tubing. Using a proven mechanism incorporatinga spring loaded locator finger and shear pin releasemechanism, the T.E.L. allows accurate depthcorrelation during slickline operations.

TUBING SWAGEThe Tubing Swage can be used to remove largeobstructions in tubing. Tubing swages of graduallyincreasing size can be run to progressively removethe obstruction.

NIPPLE BRUSHThe Nipple Brush is used to clean up nipple profilesof deposits that may interfere with the operation ofthe nipple. For example, scale, wax or asphaltenescan be removed from key profiles and seal boresto allow the setting of a lock mandrel.

CROSSOVER SUBCrossover subs are utilized to connect differingthread or quick lock types. The QLS crossoversub can be supplied in any size/connectionconfiguration. All crossover subs are suppliedwith standard fishing necks relevant to theconnection size.

DUMP BAILERThe Dump Bailer is used to spot chemicals (e.g. acid),downhole. The tool locales on top of a lock mandrel(set beforehand). Downward jarring shears the retainingpins and allows the chemical to be released from thechamber.

Variations on this tool have been produced. Forexample a dump bailer which locates on top of awireline retrievable safety valve and which seals insidethe flowtube of the valve. This tool is used to removescale from the valve which would otherwise have tobe retrieval and changed out.

PUMP (SAND) BAILERSand Bailers are used to clear debris from the wellbore, usually when it has settled on top of a flow controldevice and is preventing retrieval. They are availablein a number of sizes and operate on the principle ofa bicycle pump with a relief valve in a piston. Whenstroked, this 'sucks' in debris at the bottom whichincorporates a ball / flapper type check valve to retainthe solids. Extension tubes can be supplied for highvolume bailing operations as can alternative bottomsubs to suit specific applications.

HYDROSTATIC BAILERThe Hydrostatic Bailer is primarily used to clear compacteddebris from the well bore, usually from on top of a flowcontrol device. This is usually only utilised if a Pump Bailer(Sand Bailer) has proven ineffective. The upper sectionof the tool is a sealed chamber at atmospheric pressure, with a shearable piston at the longer end. Downwardjarring releases the piston which is forced upwards bythe influx of well pressure drawing in any debris belowthe tool. The debris is then retained by a ball (or flapper)type check valve to allow retrieval to surface.

SHIFTING TOOL ACTIVATORThe Hydraulic Operated Shifting Tool Activatoris designed to greatly enhance the force impartedto the sliding sleeve from the shifting tool duringsleeve opening or closing operations. TheActivator can be run with any type of shifting tooland adapted to run in most tubing configurations.A continuous and variable force can be appliedto the sleeve by the Activator simply by applyingtubing pressure. The Activator incorporates atell-tale device that will confirm the sleeve isopen.

The tool is particularly suited to high deviationwells where jarring action can be ineffective.

DU PULLING TOOLThe DU pulling tool was designed to overcome theweaknesses associated with convention pullingtools. When retrieving devices with internal fishingnecks it may be necessary to jar both upwardsand downwards. With convention GR or GS typetools this can result in premature shearing of theshear pin.

FISHING EQUIPMENT

HEAVY DUTY RELEASABLE OVERSHOTAn awareness of the functional requirements of fishingequipment resulted in the development of the HeavyDuty Releasable Overshot. The Overshot has beendesigned to withstand jarring forces experiencedduring the most difficult of fishing operations. TheOvershot, is manufactured to the highest standard, and is the most robust Overshot on the market today.

The Petroline Releasable Overshot, unlike mostothers, has been designed with the ability to releasefrom the fish if desired. This is simply achieved bydownward jarring. From an operational point of viewthe Overshot is of simple design with no complexcomponents. No special tools are required fordismantling or reassembling and it therefore requiresthe minimum of maintenance. The Overshot isavailable in a full range of sizes with a complementaryslip range. The tool is released by downward jarringuntil the pin shears, allowing the top sub mandrel tomove downwards and latch the top of the slip mandrel.

HEAVY DUTY PULLING TOOLThe Heavy Duty Pulling Tool (H.D.P.T.) was the firsttool specifically designed for use in conjunction withthe Adjustable Upstroke Jar in order to specificallywithstand high impact jarring forces. Conventionalpulling tools have between two and four latching dogswhich when subjected to impact forces tend to eitherdamage the fishing neck or, in the worst case, shearoff. The H.D.P.T. uses a full circumference latchmechanism which spreads any load evenly aroundthe fishing neck. This feature combined with the robustconstruction and fully encapsulated housing give afivefold strength increase over conventional tools andminimizes fishing neck wear / damage.

Available in a range of sizes to suit all conventionalfishing necks it is also possible in some cases toutilise various finger cores within the same body, increasing cost effectiveness. This is without doubtthe most effective fishing tool available.

HEAVY DUTY RELEASABLE SPEARThe Heavy Duty Releasable Spear is designed toengage the internal bore of a downhole device whichdoes not have a serviceable fishing neck, whilstproviding the facility to shear off and retrieve the spearto surface when required.

This is particularly necessary when attempting toretrieve a ‘fish' which may need to be pumped / flowedthrough at a later stage if not recovered.

Unlike similar devices previously available the PetrolineReleasable Spear is designed to withstand high impactjarring operations. This feature combined with thedesign of the release mechanism makes this devicea much more reliable option than conventionalalternatives. Proven in use with the Heavy DutyWireline Fishing Service it is available in a wide varietyof engagement sizes and reaches.

The design of the DU pulling tool overcomes theseproblems by allowing bi -direction jarring where:

l Initial downward jarring will not shear outthe DU

l Subsequent upward jarring can be appliedwithout shearing out the DU

l Final downward jarring will shear the releasepin allowing retrieval of the DU

The DU design allows shear out even when debrisprevents the tool shouldering out on the fishingneck. With standard GR/GS designs this scenariomay result in an expensive fishing operation.

INDEXING TOOLThe Weatherford Indexing Tool allows 360 degreerotation of fishing tools as required.

The rotation is achieved by means of an IndexingShoe and ‘J’ Slot Mechanism activated bymanipulation of the wireline string.

The Indexing Tool can be used for offset fishingoperation or to rotate muleshoe guides.

RELEASABLE ALLIGATOR GRABThe Releasable Alligator Grab was developed to addressthe performance limitations of previous such devices. Anumber of improvements were made resulting in a toolwhich could be relied on to retrieve loose debris or ‘junk’from a wellbore, even at depth in high deviation. Unlikeprevious designs, the Releasable Alligator Grab, whenin the 'run' position, requires a small pin to be shearedbefore it can activate. This is accomplished by fairly lightdownward jarring once the junk is located but preventspremature activation when l.D. restrictions in the wellboreare encountered.

In addition there is also a safety release feature so thatif the debris is not retrievable, upward jarring shears arelease pin allowing the grab to disengage. Both thesefeatures are further enhanced by the adjustable springrating which determines how much force is generatedwhen activated. Custom jaws can be supplied on request.

BULLDOG SPEARThe Bulldog Spear is a simple internal grappleused for retrieving debris without a suitablefishing neck. Their simple design makes themboth cost effective, reliable and they can besupplied from 0.5" to 7" engagement.

When selecting these items ensure that theirinability to release will not compromise theoperation or alternatively select a 'ReleasableSpear'.

BELL GUIDEBell Guides are attached by threadsto the skirts of pulling tools / overshotsto assist in latching the fishing neck /O.D. of the device to be retrieved. They can be supplied in a variety ofsizes and designs to suit particularapplications.

WIRELINE FINDER / GRABThe Finder / Grab is used in the same manneras a conventional wire grab to retrieve brokenwire downhole. However, with the additionof a wireline finder skirt there are a numberof benefits.

The number of wireline runs needed can besignificantly reduced as the finder / grabcombination negates the need for separatewirefinder and wiregrab runs. Also thepossibility of passing the top of the wire issignificantly reduced compared with aconventional wiregrab. Various size wirefinders can be supplied for each differentgrab size.

WIRELINE GRABThe Wireline Grab is normally used to retrieve brokenwire from within the wellbore and is always run on apulling tool, hence the Rope Socket style top sub. Inthe event that the grab latches wire which cannot beretrieved it is possible to release the grab by shearingthe pulling tool, in order to change toolstringcomponents or wire type.

Manufactured from solid tube, Petroline wire grabsare exceptionally robust, which combined with certifiedwelding of the barbs makes them suitable for theheaviest fishing operations.

WIREFINDER TRIP SUBReverse taper completions present one major risk during anywireline operations - breaking the wire in the large bore tubing.Should this occur, a conventional wirefinder gives a high possibilityof missing the top of the wire, becoming entangled, and causinga workover. The solution is to use a Petroline ExpandableWirefinder

The WTS is used in place of a conventional crossover from thesmall bore to the large bore tubing. The WTS features a controlledtaper profile which is designed to suit the trip keys on theExpandable Wirefinder. This minimises any bearing forces withinthe wirefinder mechanism and maximises its reliability. WirefinderTrip Subs can be supplied to suit any tubing crossovercombination, and any premium thread type. In combination withthe Expandable Wirefinder, the WTS represent a very low costinsurance against potential workovers in reverse tapercompletions.

EXPANDABLE WIREFINDERThe Expandable Wirefinder is for use in Reverse TaperCompletions in which larger ID tubing (say 7") is runbelow smaller ID tubing (say 5-1/2"). In suchcompletions, fishing broken wire with conventionalfinders can be problematic.

The Expandable Wirefinder is run through the smallerID tubing section and on through the crossover to thelarger ID section below. The tool is then pulled backto the tubing crossover. At this point the ExpandableFinder is tripped on the crossover. The expandablefinder fingers are then pushed by a spring from thetools body and contact the ID of the larger tubingsection below. Normal wire finding operations can nowtake place. On retrieval back into the smaller ID tubingsection the finder fingers collapse back into the toolbody.

An alternative version of the Expandable Wirefinderis also available that trips by downward jarring againsta no-go in the completion.
