We don’t know what else we can do to engage our community. These are programs that other communities value highly. This Monday night at 6pm we will be holding our P&C meeting where we will vote in a new President and Vice President. We are asking our community to come forward and back us in all our Wiri adventures and that our community voice be heard. Tickets are on sale at the office until next Wednesday 3pm…$5 pp or $20 for a family of 5. No tickets will be sold at the door. Mrs Saurins Principal Our positive affirmation this week is: “I know what I need and I am organised with my belongings.” This affirmation is about taking responsibility for your belongings and being organised. This is particularly important in the upcoming weeks as we prepare for our show ‘Stand Up…’ You need to be organised: 1) To be at school and at the Globe Church on the day of the show 2) To have your costume, hair and make-up organised. 3) To be ready to go on stage and do your best. Wiri says,

Let’s learn about . . .

“Resilience” This week we are learning about how to be strong and smart. As respectful, responsible, learners we:

• Use positive self-talk. • Can stay calm. • Can accept when things don’t go the way I want. • Don’t give up. • Are learning how to bounce back. • Are learning to show confidence in my own abilities.

Just like Wiri says,

“I am Resilient”

Support Unit and Sailors with disAbilities Last week students from the Support Unit were invited to go sailing on Newcastle Harbour with Sailors with disAbilities. The students sailed on a yacht and helped with all aspects of sailing, some students even having the opportunity to drive! As we sailed out of Newcastle Heads, we were lucky enough to see some dolphins playing in the water. It was such a great experience for the students and for the teachers. We would like to thank the volunteers from Sailors with disAbilities for inviting us to join them for such an amazing experience.

Science Day at Wiripaang

Last Thursday we were lucky enough to celebrate National Science Week with science activities organised by the Science teachers and students from HSHS. What a lot of fun we had! We had a whole school demonstration and then we rotated around some great learning experiences. Students used balloons to make static electricity, made CD hovercrafts, but the most exciting part was playing in the ‘goo’ made from cornstarch as well as the film canister rockets, which skyrocketed into the air!

Thank you to the staff and students from HSHS for their organization, we look forward to more scientific adventures next year.

Please remember this Friday 4th September Year 6 students have been invited to attend the University of Newcastle for a day of fun and enjoyment. There is no cost for this excursion and this event has been organised so that these students get an opportunity to see what resources and fun is on offer at the university. Please return these notes ASAP so that your child can join us on this fun excursion.

Mathematics Support Unit WM and WF

Week 7 and 8 is Time Week in WM and WF. Students have been learning to

2. Identify and name the four seasons in a year and their corresponding months. Students are able to identify the four seasons and were learning to name the season their birthday month falls in.

Sport News

Netball Report – Macquarie Cup

Wiri Junior

No game for the Junior team last Friday as it is finals. Congratulations girls on a great term of Netball

Wiri Senior vs Jewells

Last Friday was all about seeing which combinations worked well leading into the finals. Everyone swapped and changed around so we could see where all out strengths (and places for improvement) are. This week we play our semi-final that sees us straight in to the grand final if we win! Go Wiri!

Regional Athletics

Congratulations to Jakob Fitzclarence for his efforts at last week’s Regional Athletics Carnival. It was a huge achievement for him to represent the East Lake Macquarie Zone at his favoured Shot Put and Discus events. He did us and Wiri very proud with his efforts and his participation.

Library News

New Books

Since the Book Fair, Wiri has purchased some great titles for our school library. We have bought some easy read novels for our students, a brand new collection of Roald Dahl titles and have also boosted our collection of picture books in Junior Fiction. Remember that the library is opened every lunch for you to come and have a quiet read, to return and borrow new books or to simply chill out in a quiet environment.

BORROWING: All students please check at home for any library books that need returning. We have TOO MANY BOOKS MISSING from the library which means your library accounts are being disabled. Once your books have been returned, your accounts will be enabled again.

Book Swap

Have you read all off your books at home? Do you want to read something new but don’t have the money to buy anything? How about you get involved in Wiri’s Book Swap? Starting Week 9 students are invited to bring in any books they have at home that they would like to swap.

How It Works:

1. Students bring in any books they want to swap and have their name recorded and the amount of books

they have brought in.

2. Next term Mrs Lynch will set up a book swap in the library with all of the books that have been brought in.

3. Students who have brought in books can come in and choose from the books displayed and take home something new.

It’s a Win Win!!
