WELCOME Welcome to this year’s Wirksworth Festival!

Our Visual Arts programme offers a wonderfully diverse Trails Weekend and thought-provoking commissioned work. Get booking to watch outdoor films, enjoy As You Like It in a secret garden, participate in our ambitious production of Carmina Burana and be inspired by young talent in the Up and Coming showcase. Join in with our Community Celebration finale which promises to be a spectacular conclusion to the final weekend.

The Festival has for many years attracted graduates from throughout the region, creating an all-important first professional showcase. This year our graduate showcase takes centre stage in our main gallery space The Parish Room. We’re also featuring the best of the region’s emerging designer makers in windows throughout town. Wirksworth is truly a creative community and we are proud of the many talented and inspirational young artists from the town who are carving out successful careers. Our middle weekend, Up and Coming, in partnership with Learning Through Arts presents a lively showcase of their work, plus seminars, tours and debates for young artists to meet, learn and discover more.

It has been an eventful year for Wirksworth Festival. We are delighted to have secured funding (2012-15) as a National Portfolio

Organisation from the Arts Council, helping us to realise our ambition to deliver great art in this inspiring, rural setting. This year we’ve tried a new approach and our Visual Arts Selection Panel will be delivering all aspects of the Visual Arts Programme. We want to say a huge thank you to our staff colleagues Alison Foote and David Gilbert as well as Board members who have made enormous contributions to the Festival’s success. We’re delighted to welcome new faces to the team this year, Natasha Astara and Naomi Wilds who bring a wealth of experience to their respective roles as Festival Manager and Festival Assistant, joining Frances Rostron whose work has been at the heart of our Trails weekend over the past seven years.

Our programme for the next three years will continue to drive for excellence, greater integration of programming and expand the focus on young new and emerging artists. We plan to keep offering you the opportunity to enjoy exploring our setting, to see thought-provoking art, discover new and emerging artists, enjoy unique performances and have great fun doing it.

Have a great Festival.

Kathy Harvey P.S Please tell us how successful we are through the feedback opportunities provided.

Wirksworth throws open its doors to the world as the whole town becomes a living gallery in this unique weekend event.

Over 150 artists have been selected this year, to exhibit in houses, public and commercial buildings, churches, schools and even shop windows. The whole town will be bursting with artworks.

The Art and Architecture Trail takes you through the town and uncovers the charm of hidden alleyways and gardens. Wirksworth is full of historic and delightful buildings, from lead miner’s cottages to fine Georgian townhouses. See inside lovely homes while discovering great artworks and chat to the artists themselves. If you are lucky you will also be entertained by street performers in unexpected places on your way.

Some of the best designer makers in the region can be found in our Designer Maker Markets stretching over two sites, the Town Hall and Memorial Hall. In the Town Hall browse and buy handmade prints, jewellery, textiles, glass, books, and sculpture. In the Memorial Hall, find a second Designer Maker Market devoted to ceramic work - decorative, functional, definitely original. Meet the makers, discuss the work on show and choose pieces to buy and take away!

In the main streets, look out for the Festival Windows. Trail through the town and enjoy the range of quirky, independent shops cafes and pubs and enjoy the spectacle of the artworks on show in shop windows.

For up to date information on all Trails artists visit the website www.wirksworthfestival.co.uk

Food Offers Wirksworth has great cafes, pubs, grocers, sweetshop, butchers and bakeries in town. Some homes and venues offer refreshments along the trail and you will also find occasional street food vendors.

Parking and Festival Bus There is a free Festival Bus continually touring from the Festival Park and Ride car park at the National Stone Centre and the main trail route. So, if walking is getting a bit much, catch the bus. Please avoid parking in the town centre, private driveways and grass verges.

Wirksworth and the World Join staff from Derbyshire Record Office, Derbyshire Local Studies Library and Picture the Past to discover fascinating sources for the history of “Wirksworth and the World” through images and original documents from as far back as the English Civil War. At the library you will be able to explore the unique Gell family archives and take part in group readings from original texts or transcripts. Places are FREE but limited, so booking is required. Please contact the Festival Office via [email protected]

Ecclesbourne Valley Railway The Wirksworth to Duffield line will be running Festival Specials. See www.e-v-r.com for details.

Free Music and Performance There’s something to enjoy on every corner and every twist and turn of the winding streets and ginnels. Street music is brought to you by Outdoor Music in Wirksworth and St John’s Theatre perform “I Don’t Call That Art!” on Saturday 8 September at Church Walk.

Summer Night’s Films Fri 7 and Sat 8 Sept at 7pm We team up with QUAD, Derby’s centre for art and film, to show The Woman in Black (12A) and Grease (PG) in the unique outdoor quarry setting of the Lime Kiln. See p8-9 for more information.

As You Like It Presented by Jagged Fence Fri 7, Sat 8 and Sun 9 Sept (6.30pm, plus matinee at 3pm on 9 Sept) The stunning garden setting of Symonds House is the venue as Rosalind and Orlando flee to the Forest of Arden in a 1950s rock ‘n’ roll version of Shakespeare’s screwball comedy.

St Mary’s Church St Mary’s Church is central to the town, and the Festival. Commissioned work will be on show in the church throughout the Festival.

On Sunday 9 September in the afternoon experience and join in the ancient Clypping Service where the congregation join hands around the church to embrace or “clypp” it.

Other weekend highlights include:

Great art in unique and inspiring settingswww.wirksworthfestival.co.uk | Full listings & online booking

Graeme Reed , Trail artist

St Mary’s Church Kirsty Smith’s ‘Beings’ welcome you with childlike yet poignant, perhaps unsettling qualities. ‘In my practice I delve into childhood memories, spend time letting my imagination free-wheel. I had a very quiet childhood and created an imaginary world that I never spoke about. I wanted something ‘more’; adventures, fantasy, exotica.’ Kirsty Smith.

Elaborate processes are set up by Stephen Livingstone to make drawings for this new commission which chart varieties of moths in and around Wirksworth. ‘Moths fascinate me and provide a mysterious and ephemeral subject and motif whose powdery wings and subtle markings lend themselves to re-interpretation in dust, smoke and ashes. A century of atmospheric pollution, intensive farming and climate change has destroyed habitats and decimated British moth populations. ’Dust and Shadows - sixty-four extinctions’ shown recently at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York, was made as a reaction to this crisis.’ Stephen Livingstone

Vicarage Gardens During the Trails weekend, Jason Hird’s ‘Lifeboat’, a 5 metre long oak keel with four rib sections is situated in the town for you to climb aboard and reflect on the changing scene with ‘Death’ and ‘Hope’ in attendance. Members of the crew brief you with regard to taking care of yourself and your fellow travellers and you can witness a performance of ‘the never-ending plank’. The Institute for Crazy Dancing is a performance company and collective of thinkers, do-ers, dancers, musicians and clowns. They collaborate with people, councils, museums, galleries and venues in order to create unexpected experiences in familiar and

unfamiliar places. They specialise in participatory performance work: site-specific / responsive and journey based – always aiming to transform the ‘audience’ into participants...

Town Hall Drawing inspiration from repeated visits to Wirksworth, Nottingham based Neil Dixon constructs a provisional structure which references the architecture of the Town Hall, uncovering links which may not be immediately obvious. Neil’s work creates a sense of uncertainty and precariousness as well as referring to the convention of the architect’s model.

Moot Hall ‘Vinyl’ marks time, histories, sounds and obsessions. What do your records say about the times we live in and what stories do they tell? If you collect vinyl, bring along some records to share. If not, come to compare notes with performance artist Bill Aitchison who will bring people and their records together during the Trails weekend. Known for producing intelligent, engaging and open-ended performances, audio and video works Bill has shown his work in galleries, theatres and festivals in the UK, France, USA, Iran, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Israel, China and Croatia.

To explore any of these artworks in more detail, meet artists and discover more check out the Events listing on p10-11.

Contemporary Visual Art

Contemporary Visual Art | 7

Opening Times Sat 8 - Sun 9 Sept, 10am-5pm, Sat 15 - Sun 16, Sat 22 - Sun 23 Sept, 10am-4pm, FREE Please Note Vinyl at the Moot Hall and Lifeboat at the Vicarage Gardens will only be open during the weekend of 8-9th September.

‘...in the festive the communal spirit that supports us all and transcends each of us individually represents the real power of the festive and indeed the real power of the art work’ Gadamer, ‘The Relevance of the Beautiful’, Ed. Bernasconi, Cambridge University Press 1986

In selecting the artists for this year’s commissioned programme a theme has emerged which emphasizes the interactive nature of art, the imagination, and the importance of play. These can take very different forms, whether quietly in the almost imperceptible flutterings of the leaves of Janet Betts’ ‘Butterfly Books’ in the Church, or very ostentatiously in Jason Hird’s ‘Lifeboat’ which will be installed on the lawn of the Vicarage. Interaction is already evident in the readiness of people in the town to assist in gathering the information for Stephen Livingstone’s ‘Pieces of Sky’, and Bill Aitcheson will invite them and all our visitors to the Festival to share his and their own ‘Vinyl’ obsessions in the Moot Hall. References to the imaginary world of childhood can be found in Kirsty Smith’s ‘Mi Wawa’ and other ‘Beings’ in the Church, and the imaginary worlds of impossible dwelling places can be seen in the pseudo-architectural model which will be built within the Council Chamber of the Town Hall by Neil Dixon. The sound piece by Natasha Astara in the Church explores ‘The Feminine Voice’ and through its use of the ambient acoustic unites the work within the space of St.Mary’s. We hope the programme will highlight the variety of contemporary practice and the way in which artists are incorporating your interaction and participation in the making of the work itself.

Graduate ShowcaseThe exhibition of recent graduates’ work at the Parish Room gives centre stage to the region’s emerging artists. As with the commissioned programme a theme has emerged, but of a rather different kind. Certain affinities or pre-occupations, or a kind of psychological state seemed to bring certain works together. There is a surreal, disturbing quality to this work, a sense of unease, obsession, and in one case a narrative of an experience of psychosis. There is a cool beauty also, coupled with irony in the work of Clare Fuller and Andrew Allen. The selection demonstrates the wide range of practice in the region’s Universities and graduates’ reflections on the prevailing currents in contemporary art and life.

This year we’re delighted to announce that Derby Museum & Art Gallery will award £250 to the most promising, emerging artist at the Festival.

Windows These are the designer-makers’ graduate showcase where you will find jewellery, textiles, glass and ceramics that push the boundaries, and combine ideas and materials in unexpected and inventive combinations, selected from the exhibitions of Nottingham Trent, Staffordshire, Derby and Loughborough Universities.

We hope very much that you will enjoy participating in this year’s programme and find the experience rewarding, engaging and food for thought.
