Wisconsin continues growth in the beef-cattle industry This year is off to a busy start, and many cattle producers are enjoying the calving and breeding season. East Central/Select Sires had another record year in 2015 with a 13 percent increase in beef sales in our southern- Wisconsin territory. This is also our forth- consecutive record-breaking year for Select Sires Beef. I enjoyed getting to know many of the beef herds across southern Wisconsin during the previous year and still look forward to meeting many more. I hope all of you enjoyed our spring beef meetings back in February. I invited Casey Jentz, regional manager with the American Angus Association, to speak on the topic of how genomics are impacting beef cattle. His presentation was very informational and we thank him, again, for presenting at each of the meetings. This year we held meetings in Beaver Dam, Mineral Point, Elkhorn, and Westby. I’m excited to say we had record meeting attendance! Thank you to everyone who could make it. I had a great time visiting with our customers at each location and was happy to see customers taking advantage of the meeting-only price specials. East Central/Select Sires has many first-time beef customers who will be utilizing artificial insemination (A.I.) this year. We have seen an increase in our complete beef synchronization service. I start out the year attending the National Western Stock Show (NWSS) in Denver, Colo. The NWSS is a great show to see the trending sire lines and top upcoming progeny. I April 2016 also like to attend some of the breeding stock sales in southern Wisconsin, so please make sure to say hello if you run into me at any of these events. As you’re flipping through this newsletter, take the time to look over some of the bulls I have highlighted. There are a few other articles discussing managing post partum cows and health products that ensure you’re getting the maximum genetic potential out of your cattle. In addition, we are celebrating our 75th Anniversary here at East Central/Select Sires. We have a great team of employees, and I believe it is our teamwork, passion, and service that allows us to continue our successful longevity. Enjoy the warm weather, and let’s keep Wisconsin a growing beef state.

Showcase Formula secret to show-winning calvesNow is the time to start thinking about how you can get the best growth on your calves for the upcoming show season. Select Biocycle Showcase Formula is the product to get calves off to a fast start and keep them on feed through the entire show season.

Showcase Formula has unique L-Form lactobacilli. Two separate strains of L-Form lactobacillus enhance the micororganism population of the lower gut to improve health and feed utilization. The L-Form is your assurance that these bacteria will have superior shelf life

and will not be affected by minerals which can kill other microbials. Showcase Formula is a complete package, because it also contains yeast and yeast culture, enzymes to improve digestion, egg proteins for immunity, and B vitamins for energy utilization.

Successful showmen start using showcase formula as soon as calves are on solid feed, for faster growing, healthier calves. They continue feeding through the show season to keep animals on feed and growing, because every day counts. Feeding Showcase Formula at the

show can help keep animals healthy and on feed through the feed, water, and environment changes that are bound to challenge show animals.

Showcase Formula is a powder that can be fed at 1/4 to 1/2 oz. per head per day, depending on conditions, age, and size of the animal. It can be topdressed or mixed into a grain mix. It comes in a 12-1/2-pound pail that fi ts conveniently in your showbox. Make Select Biocycle Showcase Formula a part of your show string today!

You only have 2 1/2 months to get your cows rebredSuccess in the cow-calf industry is dependent on the female’s ability to produce a calf, annually. Managing the postpartum interval, or the time between calving and when she comes into heat, is important for maintaining your yearly calving goal.

The average beef female will have a gestation length of around 283 days. With 365 days in the year, that only gives you about 82 days to get her rebred.

Prolonged postpartum anestrus, during which she is not cycling, is a major cause of failure to rebreed or breed late in the breeding season. Postpartum intervals ranging from 46 to 168 days cause management challenges. Overcoming an extended postpartum interval allows for the achievement of optimum pregnancy rates.

There are many factors occurring during the postpartum interval that affect her ability to resume estrus, or to come back into heat.

After calving, the fi rst process that occurs is uterine involution, which is the general repairing of the uterus. This process usually occurs within 20 to 40 days after calving. Dystocia, or a diffi cult calving, can increase the length of time needed for uterine repair. While you cannot manage the time it takes the uterus to repair, you can manage some dystocia by breeding to calving-ease bulls, especially on heifers. Select Sires offers many options for calving-ease bulls in various breeds.

After the physical repair, there is repair or reestablishment of the hormonal system occurring within 30 to 40 days after calving.

The major hormones involved in reproduction are gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH), which includes follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH); progesterone; estrogen; and prostaglandins. GnRH naturally causes the release of LH that acts on the follicle to ovulate or release the egg. In a synchronization protocol, GnRH is also used to ovulate the follicle and cause the development of a corpus luteum (CL), which releases progesterone. Progesterone is needed for the maintenance of pregnancy. Implementing a synchronization protocol using progesterone in the form of a CIDR insert is a management option to tightly synchronize

animals for insemination. Progesterone is also necessary for the establishment and reestablishment of cyclicity. Prostaglandin is the next hormone used in a synchronization protocol to regress the CL so animals can come back into heat.

Recommended synchronization protocols are published yearly from the Beef Reproduction Task Force and can be found in your Select Sires Beef Directory or on the Select Sires Beef Website at www.selectsiresbeef.com. By managing dystocia and the reproductive cycle, your herd should be right on track for rebreeding.

CowManager attracts attention in beef industryThe modern heat-detection system, CowManager®, has everyone talking, including beef producers. CowManager is the fi rst ear-tag-based system Select Sires has offered. Having an ear-tag-based system allows for beef producers to have nothing out of the ordinary on their cattle.

ggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggBy Trevor Yager, Beef Specialist

The main advantage is catching cows and heifers in natural heats. The system also works well for picking up repeat heats and an expected calving date if the animal has not repeated on the system and the vet confi rms her pregnant. Producers use this system to maximize embryo-transfer results

by knowing when recipient cows have cycled and when donor cows are coming into heat for breeding. Call East Central/Select Sires beef specialist, Trevor Yager, at 608-574-6142, if you’re interested in learning more about the benefi ts of CowManager.
