Calendar of Events

Dear Fellow Breeders,We just finished the annual meeting in Wisconsin Dellsthis past Saturday and enthusiasm ran extremely high. Itwas a pleasure to see the room packed and the seats full forthe noon banquet. The main subject of conversation wasthe upcoming 2016 Junior National Hereford Expo to beheld in Wisconsin on July 9–15, 2016 in Madison. A powerpoint presentation about the 2016 JNHE was given bySondra Brancel and Kim Jones. They made an excellentpresentation informing the membership of all the details forthe 2016 JNHE. They are starting to put together sign upsheets for volunteers to help with the JNHE. If you havetime, please look at the website under the 2016 JNHE tabto see where you might be able to assist us with this show

or contact Kim Jones, BJ Jones or Sondra Brancel. It is going to take a lot ofvolunteer manpower to make this show an excellent event for all that attend.Remember to attend the upcoming WI Hereford State Sale to be held on March

5th, 2016 at the Grant County Fair grounds in Lancaster. The semen auction willbegin at 11:30 a.m. with the cattle to sell at 12:00 noon. All the proceeds from thissemen auction go directly to the 2016 JNHE. If you have any questions about thesemen auction, please refer to our WI Hereford Association website atwisconsinherefords.org or contact BJ Jones for more details. The catalog for the salecattle is also posted on the website if you did not receive one in the mail. I want to thank Nicki Folkman and Elizabeth Bowen for volunteering to be the

queen and princess chair persons. These two young ladies that have come up throughour WHA organization and now they are leading this program. We should all beextremely proud of what this WHA program does to develop young people to be ourfuture leaders. Good luck with your calving season. Tonight as I am writing this, we are receiving

about 12" of snow with blizzard winds. Not the greatest day or night for calving butthese calves are tough and they can withstand our Wisconsin winter. I hope to seeyou at the State Sale in a few weeks.

The 2016 Denver National WesternStock Show is now history, for theHereford breed. Tremendous numbersof quality Herefords wereprofessionally displayed and exhibited.Over 800 head competed at variousshows throughout the week. There were349 head in open show, 151 head in thejunior show, 43 pen of bulls, 29 pen ofheifers, and nine carload of bullsshown. Congratulations to LowdermanCattle Company, Macomb, Ill. forbreeding both the Grand Champion

Polled Hereford Bull and Female in Denver. LCC FBF TimeTraveler 480, Grand Champion Polled Bull, and LCC TG Be MyMerry Time 7B, Grand Champion Polled Female were bothprogeny of RST Times A Wastin’ 0124, who was the 2013Supreme Denver Grand Champion. Both the Mile High Night Sale and the Mile High Eve sale

were hugely successful. It was estimated that well over 5,000people attend the Mile High Night Sale where 47 lots averaged$16,404 with the 14 bulls averaging $16,604, and the 35 femalesaveraging $ 16,336. At the Mile High Eve Sale, 8 flushesaveraged $13,303, 3 pregnancies averaged $7000, 86 embryosaveraged $1233, and 78 units of semen averaged $423. Highlighting the Mile High Night Sale was KJ BJ DWE 686Z

Salsa 364C ET, the Hereford Youth Foundation of Americandonation heifer which was donated by Jensen Bros. Courtland,Kansas. The March 29, 2015 daughter of CRR 719 Catapult 109sold for $80,000 to the Jonny Harris Family, Screven, GA, C&LHereford Ranch, Steve and Jill Folkman and Family, Ixonia, WI,and RGR Cattle Company, Lonny, Kim (Carney) and RileyRhodes, Carlinville, IL. A very special thank you to all partiesinvolved for the continued support of HYFA.Each year in Denver, I enjoy looking at all the cattle both on

the hill and in the yards, especially the bulls. Some of the verybest Hereford bulls in the world are on display. This year was noexception! Since returning back home and recapping thehighlights of the stock show, I realize that this time of year is themost import time of year to improve your herd. The fastest, mostefficient way to improve your herd is on the bull selection youmake in the next 90 days prior to the spring breeding season. I encourage all Hereford breeders to do more Artificial

Insemination on your Hereford females in 2016. The geneticadvancement you will make by using the top bulls will changeyour program more than anything else you can do all year long. The Hereford breed is very blessed to have the genetic versatility.By using Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs), GenomicEnhanced EPDs, and structural sound bulls improvement in your2017 calf crop will be tremendous.
