The Year 1880 - The Horse wasThe Supreme Symbol of Power
This was the age when veterinarians became known as “Horse Doctors.”
(At the Galloway House & Village, the displays are centered around the era of 1860 and 1920)

VeterinarySurgeon’s Office
Dedicated on
June 4, 1977 ,
this veterinary
museum became
the fifth in the
U.S. and one of
thirty-six in the
world.

WVMA sponsored the development of this museum in 1976, with a sum total of $1500 to cover the cost of moving the building and to construct the foundation. The WVMAHistorical Committee had been working on collecting veterinary artifacts for the previous six years. Once the building was completed, it was filled with all ofthe collected artifacts.

The Fond du Lac County Historical Society Officers and Board of Directors voted to dedicate the WVMA museum
in honor of Dr. Fred J. Born on July 11, 2009.

This desk was
donated by Dr.
Bill O’Rourke, the
former Executive
Secretary of the
WVMA. It had
been in his
Columbus , WI
veterinary
practice since the
1940’s.

Up to this time,
the veterinary
practitioner had
to formulate his
own capsules.
The mortar and
pestle was an
important part of
his daily routine.

This veterinary
library contains
over 400 books
donated from
veterinarians
from all over the
U.S . There
are over 800
veterinary
instruments that
were used during
the years of
1860 till 1920.
During this
period of
veterinary history
the primary
patient was the
horse.

Two man horse clipper
This hand powered
hair clipper was
built by the
Chicago Flexible
Shaft Co. (now the
Stewart Clipper Co.)
and donated by Mr.
Hal Bowman of the
Burroughs
Wellcome Co. of
North Carolina. His
father worked for
the Chicago Flexible
Shaft Co. in the
1900’s.

Two Different Types of
Horse Speculums
These
instruments
were used to hold
the horse’s
mouth open while
the veterinarian
performed
dentistry on the
horse. The top
one was used for
longer
procedures and
the lower one
was used for
shorter
procedures.

Osteotrite
This obstetrical instrument was used to remove a dead fetus from a
mare or cow. More modern instruments are in use now, such as OB
wire.

needles and a selection of
various urinary
catheters
Seton needles
were used to
insert iodine
soaked umbilical
tape through
deep abscesses
for adequate
drainage.

The oral tablets on left were used in treating dogs. The hypodermic tablets on the right were dissolved in sterile water and injected with a sterile syringe in all animals.

Bovine pelvic splitter
This instrument is used on first calf heifers, when the calf is too large and the pelvic opening is too narrow.
This instrument is made of stainless steel, weighs 18 pounds and is 48 inches long.
