The Four Foundations of Mindfulness in Plain English
Bhante Gunaratana
“A wonderful addition to the In Plain English series.” —Matthew Flickstein, author of
The Meditator’s Workbook and The Meditator’s Atlas
In simple and straightforward language, Bhante Guna-ratana shares what the Buddha said about mindfulness inhis instructional talks and explains how we can use these
principles to improve our daily lives, deepen our mindfulness, and move closer to our spiritual goals. While based on a clas-sic text, the Satipatthana Sutta, this presentation is thoroughlymodern, in Bhante’s trademark plain-English style. The practiceof contemplating the Four Foundations—mindfulness of thebody, feelings, mind, and phenomena themselves—is recommended for people at every stageof the spiritual path. As the Buddha says, everyone “should be exhorted, settled, and estab-lished in the development of these Four Foundations of Mindfulness.”
“A joyous gift from this beloved teacher.” —Mu Soeng, author of The Heart of the Universe and The Diamond Sutra
BHANTE GUNARATANA is one of the most venerable and senior members of the Buddhistcommunity. He is the founder of the Bhavana Society in West Virginia, and travels andteaches on six continents. He’s the author of the classic bestseller Mindfulness in PlainEnglish, as well as Beyond Mindfulness in Plain English and the autobiography Journeyto Mindfulness.

“A must-read addition to the growing literature on ‘WesternZen’—with an engaging clarity and informed, easygoingsophistication.”—Zoketsu Norman Fischer, author of Sail-ing Home
Drawing on sources as diverse as the Bible and come-dian Emo Phillips, James Ishmael Ford reflects on hismore than four decades of walking “the Path” and

means to work toward it—helping us see, in the words of one chapter title, “Some of WhatZen Practice Is, and a Little of What It Isn’t.” This book explores the fascinating issues ofkarma and rebirth from the deconstructing perspective of Zen in a way that resonateswith a wide audience. And perhaps most significantly, Ford takes a fresh and nuanced lookat the Buddhist Ethical Precepts—which Ford frames as “Seven Suggestions.”

The Numerical Discourses of the Buddha
A Translation of the Aºguttara Nik›yaTranslated by Bhikkhu Bodhi
This volume contains a full translation of the Aºgut-tara Nik›ya, the fourth collection of the Buddha’sdiscourses in the P›li Canon. The Aºguttara arranges
the Buddha’s discourses in accordance with a numericalscheme that promotes retention and easy comprehension. The primary focus of the Aºguttara Nik›ya is practice, which it treats from a wide-angle perspective, advancingfrom basic ethical observances, through the pillars of men-tal training, to the highest meditative attainments. TheAºguttara is also distinguished among the four Nik›yas byits interest in types of persons, which it describes in detail, often with stunning similes.
