Within this brochure you will find an array of courses and workshops to enhance your experience and knowledge of plants and gardens, from pruning and propagation to art and photography. Whether you enjoy creative days out or short courses for building your skills, we hope you find something to suit you in the following pages. Our courses offer the opportunity to learn alongside RHS horticulturists and experts in their field in the amazing, unique setting of RHS Garden Wisley.

Whether you are just starting out with a garden or looking to broaden your gardening skills, our 2018 programme aims to provide sessions to suit everyone. Once again we have been developing brand new courses for you and are excited to introduce ‘Transforming Your Garden’, ‘Mosses, Lichens and Liverworts’, ‘Garden Design: Let’s Talk Money’ and the exclusive ‘Make a Herbarium Sample’.

2018 marks the year that the Courses and Workshops programme at RHS Garden Wisley undergoes some big developments and we need your help to do this. Please look out for further information on pages 8 and 9.

To fit in with the developments and the bigger picture at Wisley, we need to adapt the way we plan courses and workshops, and how we tell you about them.

In July we will temporarily lose the main space that we use for courses, which is why there are fewer workshops than usual scheduled in the second half of 2018.

From late 2018 onwards, we would like to test courses in new spaces as and when they become available. Some of the courses will be brand new and all will be at discounted ‘trial’ prices. To make the most of these new spaces, we will need to plan courses with a shorter lead-time than our current annual programme that we publish.

We would like you to let us contact you by email from time to time to keep you updated with courses and workshops developments and make sure you are the first to know about new courses that we plan.

We promise not to bombard you with emails, but to update you every month or two with what’s new, and we won’t share your details with anyone, ever.

If you have feedback or suggestions we would love to hear from you. In spring 2018 we will commence a major evaluation project and everybody on the development group email list will be invited to take part. If you have anything more pressing to discuss, please contact us via the details on the back cover of this brochure.

RSPB Big Garden Bird WalkSaturday 27 January 8.30am to 11am (breakfast at 10am)Tutor: RSPB

Take an early-morning walk around RHS Garden Wisley with volunteers from North West Surrey RSPB and discover what bird life is dwelling in the garden during the spring. This informal walk will include information and identification points of the birds seen. All are welcome, especially newcomers to bird watching. Children under the age of 16 are welcome on this event but must be accompanied by an adult. Binoculars would be useful and dress for cold weather conditions as this is an outside activity. The walk will end with a cooked breakfast.

Mosses, Lichens and Liverworts Wednesday 21 February 1pm to 3.30pmTutor: John Wells

Delve into the mysterious world of our lower plants. These fascinating organisms belonging to the Plant Kingdom (mosses and liverworts) and Fungus Kingdom (lichens) form part of our garden ecology. They contribute towards biodiversity, maturity and beauty almost everywhere. Join our guest expert John Wells to learn about the ecology and structure together with some tips on how to identify various species. John will describe why certain species only occur in particular habitats, their purpose in nature, their usefulness in measuring atmospheric pollution and more. This session will include some classroom time followed by a walk around RHS Garden Wisley to see some examples in situ. Please wear suitable outdoor clothing and footwear.

Can your roses do better? This course will cover all the major rose types including hybrid tea, floribunda, shrub roses and climbers. Experts will demonstrate the correct pruning and planting techniques to allow each one to reach its full potential. Spring is a busy time for pruning, but it can be daunting if you are not sure of what to prune and how. This talk and demonstration by RHS staff will show you the theory behind pruning shrubs at this time of year along with vital pruning principles which will allow your plants to be at their best for the year ahead. The course will encompass a wide range of topics: general maintenance, pruning garden favourites such as Buddleja, Wisteria and Cornus (dogwood) as well as renovation pruning for overgrown shrubs. Whether you are new to gardening and unsure what you should be doing or are a keen gardener wanting to brush up on your skills, let the RHS experts guide you through the gardening year. Providing a whistle-stop tour of tips, tricks and techniques, this day course will advise you on your seasonal gardening tasks. March and April will include seed sowing and pricking out, lawn care, staking, aerating beds, plant selection and pruning for winter stem colour and other garden tasks with opportunities for you to have a go at many of these tasks yourself. Learn how to save a fortune on plants by growing your own from seeds and cuttings. This full-day course will go through the basics of propagation and show you the best techniques to produce the most successful results. There will also be a guided tour around the propagation glasshouses at Wisley where thousands of plants are raised for the garden every year. Transforming Your Garden Friday 9 March 10.30am to 4pmTutor: Ellen Walden

If you are planning a new garden or want to revitalise a tired outdoor space, this practical day, aimed at home gardeners, will help you to make and realise your plans. The day will start with an inspiration workshop, helping you to form a clear brief of what you really want your garden to be. You will then be taken through all the practical tasks involved with analysing your site, including soil testing and identifying microclimates. The session will conclude with a plant selection tour, offering suggestions of plants that will perform well in different situations. Please bring a sample (a trowel-full) of your soil for testing. The course will involve a walk outdoors so please wear suitable clothing and footwear.

Further your knowledge and skills, develop the use of your greenhouse and make your space more productive. This illustrated talk and practical demonstration will include advice on managing the glasshouse environment throughout the spring, growing salads, fruits and vegetables, a close look at feeding and watering and how to control pests and diseases.

If you’re new to gardening and are feeling a little overwhelmed, this is the course for you. Over two days we will take you back to basics and grow your knowledge from the ground up. Subjects introduced will include; plant types, growth and structure, planting and plant care, basic propagation, ground cultivation, growing media, pruning, lawn care, feeding and watering. By the end of the course you should have gained a solid base from which to build further knowledge. The course will involve some lecture-based sessions and some indoor and outdoor practical sessions, so please come prepared with appropriate clothing, footwear and gardening gloves.

Is the grass always greener on the other side of the fence? If so, then come and find out the secrets to keeping a healthy, luscious lawn all year round on this one day course. Discover how to establish a lawn from scratch with turf or seed and how to renovate a grass area that is past its best. The day will cover yearly maintenance including feeding, mowing and weeding as well as effective solutions for removing moss. Grass types for different situations will be covered, as will equipment for keeping your lawn smart to set your garden off to its best and be the envy of your neighbours.

Small but beautifully formed, the variable structures, textures and exquisite flowers of alpine plants make them difficult to resist. Our expert RHS Alpine Team will talk you through selecting, planting and looking after alpines. They will then guide you through planting your own alpine trough to take home. Whip and Tongue Grafting of Apples Friday 23 March 10.30am to 1pm Tutor: RHS Team

Whip and tongue grafting is a widely used technique for grafting fruit trees as well as many ornamental plants. On this practical session you will be able to choose two apple cultivars from a selection available and graft them onto two rootstocks to take home. Aftercare will be explained so that you are able to successfully grow on your grafted rootstocks. This session will involve practical activities, so please come prepared with suitable footwear, clothing and gardening gloves.

Understanding your soil is the first step towards successful gardening, and this course is designed to help you get your soil working better for you. Learn about the texture and chemical balance of your soil and discover ways you can optimise these to promote happy, healthy plants. To mulch or not to mulch? Join our RHS Team to learn about what, how and when we mulch at RHS Garden Wisley. How long will plants survive? Will they spread? How will my new border look in five years’ time? This full-day garden-based workshop with renowned plantsman Noel Kingsbury aims to encourage participants to observe garden and landscape plants, focusing on their growth through the year. The session will look at how plants compete with each other, how to assess prospects for their longevity and their suitability for a variety of garden locations. Gardeners and designers can then use their experience and knowledge of plants to maximise interest and minimise maintenance through all seasons.

Discover how to support different plants in your garden, including grasses, roses, herbaceous plants and shrubs. The session will cover why we stake, the different options for staking materials and how they are used at Wisley. This session will include practical demonstrations in the garden, so please come prepared with suitable footwear and clothing.

An Introduction to Japanese Woodblock Printing Two-day course: Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 July 10.15am to 4.15pmTutor: Laura Boswell

Join renowned printmaker Laura Boswell for this two-day course on the wonderful art of Japanese woodblock printing. Traditional Japanese woodblock is a sensitive and beautiful print process using watercolour and rice. This ancient method produced the iconic woodblock prints from Japan’s Edo Period. It is a table top process, requiring no press and uses totally non-toxic materials.

This course covers the basic skills needed to create a multi-coloured print using traditional Japanese woodblock techniques, giving an understanding of the materials and the methods to prepare, register, cut and print using Japanese plywood and watercolour paints. Laura welcomes all levels of experience, especially beginners who would like to take away the basic skills to be able to print successfully with watercolour at home. Laura is one of the only practitioners of the art in the UK and at the time of writing has just been selected as the British artist for a return residency in Japan to further her skills.

This course begins with an illustrated lecture followed by practical sessions in the garden, where students can learn about the techniques honed by Clive over a twenty-year career as a professional flower and garden photographer. Plant Photography Master Class with Adrian DaviesSaturday 19 May 10am to 4pmTutor: Adrian Davies

Take your plant photography to the next level on this one-day workshop, aimed at helping you take technically perfect and visually exciting images of plants with expert photographer and author Adrian Davies. Following an introduction to photographing plants there will be sessions in the garden and glasshouse, as well as indoors. Please bring your camera (DSLR preferred), lenses and tripod if you have them.


Creative Plant Photography with Andy Small Sunday 17 June 10am to 4pmTutor: Andy Small

Andy Small is one of the UK’s most original and influential fine art flower photographers. Spend a day with Andy to learn about his creative approach to garden and plant photography and discover how he creates his iconic images. This workshop will include talks on the fundamentals of creating unique images of plants, followed by sessions of practical photography in the garden and studio, with an emphasis on close-up, macro work. Please bring your own camera; a digital SLR is preferable.

Close-Up Insect and Plant Photography with Adrian Davies Sunday 24 June 10am to 4pmTutor: Adrian Davies

Turn your macro lens to the intriguing world of insects as you master the art of capturing images of the creatures that can really bring plant photographs to life. This course concentrates entirely on close-up and macro photography and is designed for more experienced photographers using DSLR or compact cameras. Please bring your own camera, tripod and any close-up accessories you have.

Ticket Information:

• All tickets must be booked in advance.

• Your tickets should arrive within 10 days of booking. In the unlikely event that they fail to arrive or you have a query regarding your tickets, please telephone 020 3176 5830 between 9am – 5pm Monday to Friday.

• Non-RHS Members may become a member of the RHS at the time of booking and pay the members’ price.

• Tickets are non-refundable unless the event is cancelled by the RHS.

• Tickets are not transferrable between courses, although you may transfer a ticket you have purchased to another person.

• RHS Garden Wisley reserves the right to cancel an event and in these circumstances will fully refund course fees.

• All events will run subject to a minimum number of students. The decision as to whether the course goes ahead is made one week in advance of the event; therefore you are strongly advised to book before this time.

• Circumstances may require that event tutors change from those named in this brochure. Provided a tutor of equal standing is secured, participants will not be notified in advance. Refunds will only be given in the unlikely event that a replacement tutor is unavailable.

• All the events are non-residential; details of local accommodation are available on request.

• If catering is provided and you have specific dietary requirements or food allergies please let us know at least seven days in advance of the event. It may not be possible to accommodate your request on the day.

• Unless specified, the events are run specifically for adults. We regret that we are unable to admit children under 16 to any event.

• Some of the creative courses require attendees to bring their own equipment. This is specified in the brochure. An equipment list is sent with booking confirmation or can be requested in advance by contacting [email protected]

• All photography courses, unless otherwise stated, require attendees to bring a camera.

Our courses and workshops are designed to be informative, friendly and fun. Please kindly note that whilst you may leave with some expertise, these courses do not count towards any formal qualifications.

Accessibility:We are passionate about ensuring that our courses are accessible to everybody. Please contact the adult learning team on 01483 479748 or at [email protected] if you have any specific needs or requirements.We endeavour to make reasonable adjustments wherever possible.

Facilities: Hillside Events Centre and the Clore Learning Centre both have level access, are both fitted with a hearing loop and have disabled access toilets. The Lecture Room is in an old building and can be made accessible, but please let us know in advance so that we can ensure that access arrangements are in place.

Wheelchairs: RHS Garden Wisley has a number of manual wheelchairs which are available to borrow at the garden entrance.

Mobility scooters: Three scooters are available for use which must be pre-booked by ringing 01483 224234. A £5 returnable deposit is payable. There will be a short questionnaire and trial before hire so it is advised that you allow an extra five minutes on your travelling time.

Carers and translators: Attendants cannot be provided, but one companion is admitted free of charge per person whose situation necessitates an assistant. If companions wish to be included in refreshments during the course please state this and pay for refreshments at the time of booking.

Admission:Admission to RHS Garden Wisley is included in the price of the course ticket.

Weather:Many of our courses include outdoor activities. Please ensure that you dress appropriately for the weather with suitable footwear.

Parking:Car parking is free. We regret that we are unable to allow cars into the garden but if you need help with equipment or transport from the garden entrance to the course venue please contact the courses and workshops team at least seven days in advance who will be able to assist.

Please allow extra time for parking on weekend courses.
