During this time of the year, the vast sapphire blue sky lying above waits for the arrival of her special
guests. Led by the mild breeze, kites have begun their flight in the sky. Higher they fly, stronger they are.
They have no hard feelings; except the love for adventure, care for each other and enthusiasm for
victory. The unending need to fly high is their best strength.
The sky high above is far more challenging. Cyclones, thunders, turbulent winds… Who knows what
might turn up all of a sudden? You should be strong enough to challenge the challenge. The secret lies
within you. Inquire about yourself, search your inner feelings. Are you sentiment on what you do, your
duty and your commitment? Develop the desire to reach the unreached, finding the passion on what
you do. The more passionate you are, higher you can fly…
Welcoming the new Rotaract year, 2013/14 Rotaract Club of University of Moratuwa has marked their

set their primus flight of the New Year. All the kites are queued up behind a solitary theme, Ignite the
Passion. As their flight gets more adventurous, they fly stronger, with their passion ignited.
Nevertheless, this is the secret to colour your dreams.
Flicker, the ultimate showpiece of the Rotaract club of University of Moratuwa, spreads out its glamour
to lighten the service rendered by its Rotaractors, to show the world what they are capable of. With the

I’m thrilled to write the foreword for the Newsletter of Rotaract Club of
University of Moratuwa, ‘Flicker’. The newsletter is the main publication of
our club each year, and it helps us relive the moments that we spend
together as a family at Rotaract Mora. Flicker will bring together different
stakeholders of our club under the vision
of our club for ‘service above self’.
Throughout the years the Rotaract Club of University of Moratuwa
has been a pioneer, the largest Rotaract Club in Sri Lanka, the only
club in District 3220 to have won Rotary outstanding award for
South-Asia twice, the only University club which organizes an official
University event; truthfully saying that it’s the only club of its calibre
would be no overstatement, even though I myself would love to say
otherwise.
‘Flicker’ brings you closer to this amazing organization filled with
vibrant personalities that strive for the best. When we did the
fresher’s welcome in June to introduce our club to the newbies at
University of Moratuwa we put up a poster which said, “We
guarantee the biggest change, in your life”. ‘Flicker’ will try to
encapsulate one year of this great change as we take the journey
to change others and ourselves.
With the resounding success that we had in the recent years with
our newsletters, ‘Rejoice’ and ‘Voyager’, ‘Flicker’ has the calibre
and the experience form the past to be the very best. Our
members have put their heart into delivering that special
experience to outsiders through words and pictures which will
capture them for the reader to visualize.
In line with our theme ‘Ignite the passion’, Flicker will look to create the passion for service in others as
well as our community at University of Moratuwa. ‘Flicker’ would educate you on our commitments; it
will be the lens through which you would see our world. I wish that you
would continue to read the future issues and be involved with us.

Music is a Universal language. University students around
the world joining hands to share and experience music makes it
more Universal. Out of the Blue, the famous cappella group from
University of Oxford visited University of Moratuwa on 4th of July
for a workshop on „Lyrics and Choreography‟.

Out of the Blue is a cappella society of Oxford University
with its membership consists mainly of Oxford University
undergraduates. Since the band was founded in 2000,
they have been climbing up the ladder of success in their
musical carrier. So far they have produced eleven studio
albums and has been crowned as UK Champions of A
Cappella three times and runners up in International
Competition for Collegiate A Cappella (ICCAs) twice.
Rotaract Mora extended their hands of brotherhood across
the globe by inviting the Out Of the Blue to Sri Lanka
organizing a workshop for ‘Lyrics and Choreography’ for the
undergraduates with musical interests at University of
Moratuwa. The project was chaired by Rtr. Hansaka
Fernando and Rtr. Dulan Nakandala of Rotaract Mora.
Revealing the inner energy hidden in youth spirits, Out of
the Blue encouraged the Mora undergraduates to feel the
music from head to toe. During the workshop, OOB also
served time for their live performance on stage.
The session ran for more than three hours and the participants actively took part throughout the event.
‘Those voices are still rhyming inside my head, Gathered experiences for a life time…’, the musical souls
participated at the event spoke. Universal people getting together in sake of Universal music, was nearly
a second Big Bang to take place…It is now a timely need to provide opportunities for local students to
work in collaboration with the foreign students from all around the world. Being led by their passion to
make a change, Rotaract Mora taking initiatives in this regard made yet another marvelous achievement
in the history of Rotaract Mora…

On 28th of July the first event organized by the newish Rotaractors of the Rotaract Club of University of
Moratuwa kicked started. The event, ‘Refraction 2013’, so named to reflect its purpose of interacting
new members with senior members of the club was solely organized by novices in the club, headed by
the event co-chair persons: Rtr. Pathum LiyanaArachchi and Rtr. Isuru Ruhunage.
The process of organizing itself improved the team spirit and confluence
between them, which helped to get to know fellow members, recognize
leaders among club members and build their personalities as budding
Rotaractors. While the organizing proceeded, the new team of
Rotaractors made their event known and attractive among the club
members through a strong advertising campaign. This was a massive
success as the expected number of participation doubled. The friendly cricket matches between the
inter-club teams at the university grounds
started off after the welcome speech by Rtr.
Sachith Thisera. All most all the club
members enjoyed the cricket matches and truly it was the first step
towards shaking hands with the senior club members. The fun doubled as
the spiced commentary amused all the spectators. Winners were
appreciated with awards and gifts. Gradually the sun faded welcoming dusk
and the crowd proceeded to the premises of the Department of Civil
Engineering, to enjoy the rest of the evening with fun elevated spirits.
The night set in and the Department of Civil
Engineering afforded the most appropriate
environment blended with music. The members
gathered around as Rtr. Buddhi Herath and Rtr.
Chamara Wijaya started off a fun game show
where all were grouped to compete in the
gaming sessions.

The task of the first game was to sit on and blow up the balloons.
The fun accelerated as the club members struggled to sit tight and
BANG…!!!Next came up the Longest Line, where the same groups
were given an allocated time to create a line as long as possible only
with their belongings.
However due to the limited time, the thanksgiving speech by the
President of Rotaract Mora, Rtr. Nipuna Nanayakkara concluded the
session. After a wonderful dinner, the fun-filled day drew to the
end, fulfilling its goals and establishing bonhomie among all
members of the Rotaract Club of University of Moratuwa.
