The Minor Scale PatternA minor scale is a scale that has la as its keynote and is made up of a specificpattern of whole steps and half steps. This pattern is different than that of themajor scale. Compare the two scale patterns below.

Major Scale Pattern: W + W + H + W + W + W + H

Minor Scale Pattern: W + H + W + W + H + W + W

On a piano, using only the white keys, play thescale to the right, beginning and ending on A.

Introducing the D Minor ScaleSing the D minor scale below. Using your ear (and the keyboard diagrambelow if you need it) answer the following questions: Between which notesdo the whole steps occur? Between which notes do the half steps occur?

No matter which note is designated as the keynote, the minor scale pattern will always be the same. The half step intervals will always occur between mi - fa and ti - do.
