liveliness at the club. We have finished up our

term 1 After School Drop In Program which I am

proud to announce will resume in Term 2. So

We have had an amazing holiday program where we have fun activities such as Soccer,

Special thanks to the holiday program coordinator Jordan Koorey and of course all

We held our 3on3 Basketball tournament as our Time4Kids fundraiser on Saturday the 16th of April. We had an awesome day full of high quality matches with special guest performances by the NSW Police Band, Dj Peter Gunz and Jeromie Hill from the Sydney Kings. The day was officially opened by the Mayor Mr. Sam Iskandar and the day closed out by handing the cheques to the winning Women’s and Men’s teams. I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank each and every one of the PCYC staff – Jordan Koorey and Mira McGowan and volunteers who works so tirelessly on this event in the lead up to the day and also on the day of the event. TENDER UPDATE

FEBRUARY 2016 | MARRICKVILLE COUNCIL

DEBBIE AND ABBEY BORGIA CENTRE

The Debbie and Abbey Borgia Centre (DAB) is a key recreation and leisure facility in the Marrickville area. The PCYC has managed the operation of the centre for the last 10 years, however the lease agreement with Council recently expired and Council was required by law to conduct an Expression of Interest to assess market interest and then a public tender.

The outcome of this process is expected to be completed by May 2016. To maintain continuity, PCYC agreed to keep managing the centre pending the outcome of the tender process.

STEEL PARK CAFÉ

The lease agreement for the café has expired. As with the DAB, both an Expression of Interest and a public tender process will identify suitable operators for the café. In the interim, the operator has chosen not to continue the café service and Council is investigating alternative service providers until the tender outcome is finalised.

The outcomes from the Expression of Interest process for the DAB and Steel Park Café were considered at the Council Meeting on Tuesday 1 December.

MARRICKVILLE COUNCIL PARTNERS WITH LOCAL PCYC

TO OFFER YOUNGSTERS AN AFTER-SCHOOL DROP-IN

PROGRAM

FEBRUARY 2016 | Bryant HevesiInner, West Courier Inner City

CHILDREN are discovering that homework can be fun at a new program being trialled at Marrickville PCYC. The after-school and community drop-in program was launched last month as a joint initiative between the PCYC and Marrickville Council. It is an afternoon alternative to the successful Marrickville Souths Fitness and Breakfast Club and was designed to combat the “lack of community-based and family activities in the Marrickville South area”.

Unlike the fitness and breakfast club, which is for those aged 12-24, the program is targeted at six- to 16-year-olds.

There are different activities offered each day, run by volunteers, including a homework club on a Monday, soccer on a Thursday, and a

community drop-in on a Saturday morning. All activities are provided free of charge, except for basketball on a Friday. The program is being trialled across the first two school terms of the year.

The council chipped in more than $10,000 to help get it up and running.

Parent Refiloe Matsie, whose daughter Tabara, 7, attends the homework club, said the program had proven beneficial.

“She works really well in a relaxed, fun environment,” Ms Matsie told the Inner West Courier.

“The people that run it are brilliant — this place makes her want to do homework. “All the children go home happy-as.” The homework club also uses board games to keep kids stimulated. Mar rickville PCYC manager Joey D’Agata said membership numbers had grown significantly since the program started, with existing members using the facility more frequently. Marrickville Mayor Sam Iskandar said he was “really excited about this pilot program of activities”.“We are responding to a community need — we listened to what residents said, and now we are coming up with a solution,” Cr Iskandar said.

PCYC 3ON3 SUCCESS

APRIL 2016 | JORDAN KOOREY

On the 16th of April 2016, PCYC Marrickville held its 2nd annual 3on3 Basketball Tournament during National Youth Week. The tournament was a fundraiser where all proceeds was donated to Time4Kids which is an annual youth fundraiser across Australia to raise funds for youth programs across the country. On the day, we had youth from all walks of life. We had 48 teams competing in a one-day tournament where there was up to $500 up for grabs, medals for the runner ups, free food and drinks and other prizes such as a gift baskets and plenty of vouchers.

I was extremely satisfied with the turnout and was satisfied at the level of cooperation and teamwork illustrated through this project that took months to plan. Last year, I managed the project by myself with the assistance and hardworking volunteering – Mary Koorey. This year, working with Mira McGowan and Mary again has proven the event to be an inevitable success.

The day was also accompanied by guest appearances such as the NSW Police Band, the Mayor – Clr Sam Iskandar, DJ Peter Gunz, Sydney Kings player – Jerome Hill and two girls who sang “hopeful”. Further to the entertainment, our youth was also engaged in activities such as our dance competition where our youth office (S/C Tyrinna Kurzydlo) danced off with our youth during the short break which gained thousands of views on the internet! We also had our 3-point competition, free throw competition and a dunk competition which also went viral on the internet, reaching 5000 views within 12 hours of uploading the video on Facebook!

The day surely exceeded our expectations and was a memorable day for our youth. The entry for the competition was $40 for juniors and $50 for seniors per team, an extremely cheap price compared to other gala days. I understand the monetary barrier placed on our everyday youth and we were proud to draw

together our youth in a social and safe environment with the presents of the NSW Police Force without the burden of high costs.

The day was made possible thanks to Yellow Brick Road Earlwood (who was also present on the event, where they had volunteered to help out) and also GH Property Practice. Both companies had featured in two newspapers which included the Innerwest Courier and the Valleytimes before the event. Also present on the day was Simply Bowen Therapy who provided treatment and massages to our youth for free. Lisa Cox from Simply Bowen Therapy said she had “VERY HAPPY CUSTOMERS, WHO DISCOVERED SOMETHING NEW ABOUT THEIR BODY”.

Just to reiterate what the manager had said, I would like to extend my sincere gratitude towards Marrickville Council for providing us with such as awesome and enthusiastic team! Also for circulating the news amongst their network and of course for partial funding. Thank you once again!

We would also like to thank our other community partners including: Coles Earlwood and Leichardt, Officeworks Lewisham, Chicken George Marrickville, Post Cafe Marrickville, the Sydney Kings, Panetta Mercato, Nieos Girll, Nutrition Warehouse Bankstown, St Maroun’s College, Westfields and Ties and Cuffs

A massive thank you to the volunteers on the day: Mary Koorey, Abla Savva, Vivian Le, Holly Halteh, Susan Abood, Roshana Jabbour, Janine Tran, Marvin Tohi, Members of the Lifepoint Community, Emile Koorey, Annie Lucchitti, Thomas Harris, Narayan Gurung, Eliane McCarthy, Kahn Drollett, Kerrie Drollett, Kerrie Kauter, Jin Park, Raymond Yu, Hafsah Saaed, Marleen and Tia Lu.

2016 MANY CUP CHAMPIONS

APRIL 2016| Ovid Prosilis

2016 Manly Cup CHAMPIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Endeavour Academy Women's Honours team clean swept every team in the Invitational pre-season Championship without losing a set in the entire tournament. The Final was against the University of Sydney who were mauled 25 - 8 and 25 - 11 in a one sided display of aggression, speed and commitment to excellence.

The Championship Final was an awesome and awe inspiring display of explosive and ballistic power hitting by an Endeavour Women's team that left the spectators and all who were witnesses of the match breathless.

What a wonderful testament to Women's Volleyball in NSW and what an inspiration to all Women's players who witnessed a magic moment in Women's Sport.

Congratulations to Christie Mokotupu, Sara Sangiorgio, Nami Urasawa, Irina Penkina, Alice Deinno, Elena Kolb, Camilla Fabbrizio, Roberta Corvino and Silvia Floris.

Endeavour routed, University of Technology Black, Kaiatta and University of Sydney on the pathway to the Manly Cup Championship.
