NAIDOC CelebrationsNAIDOC Celebrations

During Week 2 of this term, our school celebrated NAIDOCweek. The NAIDOC theme for 2021 was Heal Country! Ouropening ceremony started with a school boundary walk ledby Uncle Frank Royee and Barrachias Royee Junior of theMalanbarra Yidinji clan which ended with traditional smokingceremony leading into our NAIDOC parade. This ancientAboriginal custom involved burning various native plants toproduce smoke, which has cleansing properties and the abilityto ward off bad spirits and create a pathway for a brighterfuture. This led into our opening ceremony where studentswere educated on the importance of NAIDOC and had theopportunity to participate in traditional dance led by the GimuyDancers, Jiritju and Isaak.

Throughout the week, students rotated through lessons ondance and music, cultural body paint and fire making leadby Gimuy Walubarra, a local clan group of the Yidinji Nation.A 3-on-3 basketball competition, digeridoo lessons were heldduring lunch breaks and on Thursday, Deadly Choices ran

Year 12 Sport and RecreationYear 12 Sport and Recreation

To close out Year 12 Sport and Recreation, students paddledin their canoes and kayaks along the Goldsborough River up atthe Goldsborough Valley Campgrounds. Throughout the termstudents have been learning on dry land forward, reverse, sweep, pry and draw strokes as well as how to perform a deepwater rescue using the X Rescue method so it was only justwe finally put our skills to the water! And paddle they did! 27super students took to the water like ducks and navigated thewaterways with aplomb. Under the Head of HPE Mr Sperring’ssupreme guidance, the students demonstrated good entry andexit techniques (with some more unique than others) as wellbeing able to paddle forwards and backwards to avoidobstacles. They performed some speedy sweep strokes withJade and Kirk being the fastest and most accurate canoe crewto finish this task! Blake and Chris were strong in all aspectsespecially their X rescue, you definitely want these lads savingyou!

Thanks for a fantastic day out Year 12 and a fantastic twoyears of teaching you for Sport and Recreation. Good luck aftergraduation!

All Schools TouchAll Schools TouchTournament - Gold CoastTournament - Gold Coast

Last month our Open Mixed Touch team travelled downto the Gold Coast to compete the QLD All Schools TouchTournament. This is the largest touch tournament in Australiawith over 6000 students participating. There was more than1700 games played across 23 fields, with gamescommencing at 7:30am and finishing up at 8:30pm. Ouropen mixed division consisted of over 60 teams alone.

We were fortunate enough to stay in a large house thataccommodated 12 students and 2 teachers, all while beingnot too far from the fields and the beach. Blake and Oshenwere tasked with cooking the team breakfast on day 1 andmanaged to cook up something that resembled pancakes!Thankfully Izzy came to save the day and took over so wewere all equipped with full bellies for the first few games.

When we got to the touch fields it was action aplenty, andbefore long it was our time to play. This team played toughand never gave up across any of their games. We matchedit with some of the toughest teams in the state, notablySouthport, who were runner up in the Grand Final, as well asSt Patrick’s Gympie who advanced to the semis. Levi andCheryl-Lee controlled our middle and created lots of scoringopportunities, while Kasey, Caitlin and Heidi did a lot of hardwork rucking the ball forward. Liam and Kristen also pulledoff some try saving touches to keep us within many closegames. A big congratulations to Oshen who took out thePlayers Player for the weekend.

It was certainly not smooth sailing for this team. There weremany factors including player changes, draw changes, gametime adjustments, and most notably the team singlets not

7

arriving on time. There are however, many takeaways fromthis trip that this group has been able to take home. Apartfrom a better understanding of the game of touch, Baileyhas learnt how to stitch, after Bunny had to sew his playingshorts together only minutes before our first game afterrealising there was a huge hole, Macca has discovered anewfound talent in the candy claw machine at Timezone(Even if he did use up a lot of his spending money), Heidilearnt that inflatable slides can leave nasty bumps andbruises, and I refreshed my memory of unclogging yetanother toilet. Thanks Blake Way.

It’s a credit to this team, who have come a long way sincethe beginning of the year, and a big thanks must go to NealTeal for the time, effort, knowledge and experience he hasapplied to training this team.

Miss Ulcoq I would also like to thank the students, theirfamilies and staff members for your contribution towards ourfundraising efforts over the year. This trip is about providingopportunities and experiences for our students here atGordonvale, and without your support we are unable tomake that happen. I certainly encourage all up and comingtouch players to mark this tournament on your calendar. Please listen out for notices towards the end of this year andearly next year for the 2022 tournament details.

Thank youThank you

A big thank you to Curtis Pitt who visited the school to meetour Open Mixed Touch team which headed down to the GoldCoast for the QLD All Schools Touch Tournament last month.Unfortunately due to Covid-19 and reduced cargo flights andair deliveries, the teams playing apparel did not arrive in time.In recognition for his sponsorship of the team, Curtis waspresented with his very own playing singlet. Our Touch Teamwill continue to wear this strip in the Monday Night Mixed TouchCompetition at Alley Park this season. Thanks again Curtis forall your support!
