In order to best serve the needs and goals of producing a major musical, participants should be comprised of those students who are willing and able to make a total commitment to the schedule involved in producing a show such as Lion King Jr. This commitment may limit the cast due to after school conflicts. It is necessary that parents, guardians, and students are aware of the commitment and responsibilities required for participating in a school play before the student auditions. Hopefully, this knowledge will promote the cooperation and dedication necessary to produce a successful show, and will eliminate misunderstandings and lack of teamwork. 1. ATTENDANCE: Every cast member is important. When a member misses a rehearsal, it inconveniences the entire cast. Absences should be limited to genuine emergencies, and, when possible, should be discussed with the director in advance. A written note or email from a parent or guardian must be provided for each rehearsal absence. Continued excused or unexcused absences will result in the cast member being released from the play. Students must come to their assigned rehearsals prepared to do silent, independent work in the designated area when not on stage. If a student is absent from school, he/she may NOT attend play rehearsal that day. 2. AFTER SCHOOL REHEARSALS: Every cast member must be at the rehearsals for which he/she is scheduled. This time is 3:35 in the afternoons (after the announcements) on the dates specified. Cast members must sit QUIETLY on the gym floor in the designated cast membersarea by the back bleachers. Cast members will be permitted to eat a dry, packaged snack at this time. All snacks must be eaten and finished BEFORE 3:45. There should be no wrappers, crumbs, or bottles left behind, and all students must leave the gym in the same condition as when they arrived. 3. BEHAVIOR: To be selected as a member of the cast is a privilege, and therefore, should be treated as one. Commitment and Responsibility Contract

Participating in a school musical production provides a unique and rewarding experience for the students of North Pointe Elementary.

When a member misses a rehearsal, it

inconveniences the entire cast.

Cast members must sit QUIETLY on the gym floor in the designated cast members’ area by the back bleachers.

Disruptive behavior WILL NOT be tolerated at play rehearsal or in the classroom during the school day. All cast members are expected to follow North Pointe’s PAWS procedures at all times. Disruptive behavior may result in the cast member being released from the play.

4. ACADEMICS AND SCHOOL ATTENDANCE: Team teachers will review all cast members to ensure that grades and attendance are maintained at an acceptable level. If a student is maintaining a grade below a C in any class, or has an unacceptable amount of days absent, he/she may be asked to take a lesser part, or leave the production. ACADEMICS COME FIRST!

5. TRANSPORTATION: All students must be picked up by their parents/guardians or designee in the front hallway promptly at the end of each practice. Parents/Guardians or designee will need to have a picture ID with them in order to pick up their child. Excessive tardiness by a cast member’s parent/guardian or designee will not be tolerated. Mr. Daniels volunteers much of his time for this production, please be respectful of this. You will need to write a note each day that your child will stay for practice. Be sure to include the name of the adult pick up person on the note as well.

6. DON’T OVER COMMIT YOURSELF All cast members must realize that this activity takes a lot of time. Mr. Daniels is asking that you refrain from doing activities that would conflict with the rehearsal times of Monday and Wednesday 3:45-5pm. This does include any other school

activities and programs provided through the school. Examples include archery, chess team, energy team, Girls on the Run, etc.

7. COSTUME RESPONSIBILITY: Cast members will be responsible for supplying/funding their own costumes for their parts, although some props may be provided. Please do not purchase anything until after the parent meeting. However, please do not allow this to be a barrier to your child’s audition. Supplemental funds may be available in specific cases of need.

8. IN ORDER TO AUDITION, the attached application form must be completely filled out in legible handwriting, with both the student’s signature and a parent’s or guardian’s signature. Bring back your audition application, completely filled out and signed, and given to Mr. Daniels. 9. AUDITIONS: Auditions will be closed, meaning that parents and other students will not be

allowed to watch. Parents may wait in the cafeteria while their child is auditioning. Parents and students waiting to audition must remain in the designated space in the cafeteria during auditions. It is each auditioning student’s responsibility to sign up for an audition time/day, to arrive at that time/day, and to have their transportation arranged for that time/day. Students auditioning right after school must have a note to stay. You may only audition if 1) your application paper has been filled out and turned in; and 2) You have signed up for an audition time. Please sign up through

10. PLEASE NOTE: ALL CASTING DECISIONS ARE FINAL. Parts will be assigned to the best overall prepared and performed auditions. Judge’s scores will remain confidential and will not be posted. Casting Placements WILL NOT be debated or discussed once the final cast decision is made. Negative or jealous comments from parents/students regarding cast members or their placements will not be tolerated, and will result in the cast member being released from the play.

***Please understand that everyone may not have a speaking part in the production. Everyone will have a singing part either solo or in a group. ***

BY FILLING OUT THE AUDITION APPLICATION AND BY AUDITIONING, PARENTS AND CAST HOPEFULS ARE AGREEING TO THE TERMS AS STATED ABOVE. IF YOU DO NOT AGREE WITH THE TERMS AS THEY ARE LISTED ABOVE, DO NOT AUDITION. Let’s work as a team to make Lion King Jr. one of North Pointe’s best productions yet. Best of luck to everyone! Break a leg!

FAQ’s 1. Who can audition?

All 4th and 5th grade students currently attending North Pointe Elementary who are in good behavioral/academic standing may audition. In accordance with the North Pointe Elementary SBDM Extra Curricular Code of Conduct Policy, participation in extra-curricular activities (which includes the school play) is dependent upon the following: you must be in good academic standing, have a good school attendance record, and follow the school and district code of conduct. The Principal may withdraw this privilege at any time.

2. I want to be on stage crew so do I have to audition? The stage crew this year will be a separate packet handed out in the fall. Details to come!

3. What do I need to do in order to successfully audition? In order to audition, students must 1. RETURN your completed audition application the music room by September 7, 2018. 2. CHOOSE one of the two audition days and sign up at our website

http://npepanthermusic.weebly.com/lion-king-jr.html. There will be a link to website called signup.com (http://signup.com/go/XjkxHkH) Sign up early to make sure you get a spot on the day and time you need! If the response to audition is overwhelming, a 3rd audition day will be added.

3. PREPARE for your audition to the best of your ability. See the end of this packet for audition materials. Memorization is not necessary, but is encouraged. Memorization shows the judges you are well prepared for your audition.

4. HAVE transportation arranged for your audition day, and be sure to bring a note from your parent to your teacher on this day. It is your responsibility to sign up and show up at the designated time and day of your audition.

5. LEARN a song of your choice. The song must be sung with no music. Don’t have to learn an entire song. A verse and a chorus would be just fine.

6. READ the script and be prepared to read with a partner. Know both parts because you will not know what part you’re going to read.

7. STAY after school on your audition day (report to the gym) OR have a parent bring you back up to school if you have time to go home first. If your time is after 4:10 please go home and have your parents bring your back for your time. Students must be supervised at all times.

8. WAIT patiently to see if you have made CALLBACKS. If you didn’t its fine you’ll still be in the show. Please pick up the CALL BACK script in the music room and come back for callbacks. You will perform a song from the show and read an additional script.

~CAST WILL BE ANNOUNCED ON SEPTEMBER 25, 2018~

4. When are auditions? Auditions will be held in the music room on 1. Monday, September 17th @ 3:50-5:30 PM (10 min. intervals) 2. Tuesday, September 18th @ 3:50-5:30 PM (10 min. intervals) 3. Call Backs are on Monday, September 24 @ 3:50-5:30 PM

5. When is the play going to be performed? 1. Thursday, April 18 7:00 PM 2. Friday, April 197:00 PM 3. Saturday, April 20 at 7:00pm

5. What days and times are the after school rehearsals? Normal Rehearsals will be on Mondays after school from 3:45 to 5:00. Not every cast member will be needed at every rehearsal. Acknowledgment of the remind app alerts will tell if your student needs to stay the night before each rehearsal. It is your responsibility to check the messages to see if and when you are needed. “I didn’t know we had practice” is NOT an excuse and will be treated as an unexcused absence. Added Wednesday starting in MARCH check your schedule. A schedule of all play rehearsal dates is attached to this packet. It will be each cast member’s personal responsibility to come to each practice for which they are scheduled, with a parent note to stay after school and their part prepared (i.e. script memorized). Rehearsal is NOT for learning individual parts, it is to learn how all the parts fit together.

**Director reserves the right to add special rehearses as needed**

6. How can parents help with this production? Cast member PARENTS are encouraged and EXPECTED to assist in the production. This could mean helping behind stage, ticket sales, props, stage management, making costumes, assisting the director at rehearsals, or coming in on Saturday mornings to build/paint the set.

If you have any other questions regarding the play, please contact the director at [email protected]
