TEAM NOTES

• Entering 2017-18, WKU ranks third in NCAA history in regular- season league titles (42), seventh in 20-win seasons, ninth in all-time winning percentage (.660) and 18th in all-time victories (1,748).

• WKU is 60-18 (.769) at E.A. Diddle Arena over the last five seasons after going 27-17 (.614) in the three seasons prior. The Hilltoppers are 584-166 all-time at Diddle Arena for a .779 winning percentage.

• WKU has advanced to the semifinals of its league tournament in 11 of the last 13 seasons. The team is 21-6 with four championships in the last 10 conference tournaments overall.

• WKU's 22 NCAA Tournament appearances are five more than the next closest Conference USA school (UTEP, 17), and as many as the eight league schools with the fewest appearances combined (LA Tech, 5; Marshall, 5; Rice, 4; North Texas, 3; Southern Miss, 3; FIU, 1; Florida Atlantic, 1; UTSA, 0).

• The Hilltoppers have had 35 NBA Draft picks in program history, most recently Jeremy Evans to the Utah Jazz in 2010. WKU will pay tribute this season to one of those draft picks, Hilltopper legend Jim McDaniels, who passed away in September. McDaniels and Courtney Lee are tied for WKU's all-time lead with 2,238 career points each.

• WKU has made at least one 3-pointer in 938 consecutive games, dat-ing back to March 15, 1987. The 3-point shot was instituted prior to the 1986-87 season.

• WKU enters the season with eight newcomers on the roster. The only returning players who saw action last year are senior forward Justin Johnson and senior guard Tyler Miller.

• WKU's 2017-18 roster represents five states – Kentucky, Louisiana, Texas, Tennessee and Wisconsin – as well as two other countries – Senegal and the Bahamas. The Hilltoppers' five players from Ken-tucky are their most from the Bluegrass State since 2011-12.

• WKU's 2017 recruiting class was ranked ninth nationally by Scout/247Sports and 10th by Rivals. It's the first top-25 class for the Hilltoppers in the modern era and the sixth top-20 recruiting class for Rick Stansbury's head coaching career.

• After two years of declining attendance, crowd numbers increased by nearly 250 fans per game in head coach Stansbury's first season at the helm in 2016-17.

PLAYER NOTES

• Senior forward Justin Johnson led WKU with 14.5 points and 9.4 re-bounds per game in 2016-17, becoming the first Hilltopper to lead the team in both categories in consecutive years since Chris Marcus in 2000-02. He's tied for 36th on WKU's all-time scoring list with 1,120 career points.

• Johnson was named to the All-Conference USA Second Team last year after leading the league in both rebounding and double-dou-bles. He ranked in the top 40 nationally in both categories. He was the first Hilltopper with at least five games of 14-plus rebounds in a season since Nigel Dixon in 2003-04.

• Johnson's 14 double-doubles last season were tied for the 10th-most by a Hilltopper since 1960, and they were the most since Dixon's 15 in 2003-04. His 24 career double-doubles are tied for the ninth-most at WKU since 1960, and they're the most since Sergio Kerusch's 24 in from 2008-11.

• Johnson was the first Hilltopper to average at least 14 points, nine rebounds and two assists since Mike Odemns in 1974-75. He was just one of 17 players in the nation with those averages in 2016-17.

• Johnson's 302 rebounds last season were the third-most by a WKU player in the last 30 years. His 219 defensive rebounds were the second-most. Johnson led the Hilltoppers in rebounding in 27 of 32 games, including the final 17 contests.

• WKU's four Division I transfers – Dwight Coleby (2) , Darius Thompson (3), Lamonte Bearden (2) and Jared Savage (1) – have competed in a combined eight NCAA Tournaments at their previous schools.

• Freshman guard Taveion Hollingsworth was named 2017 Kentucky Mr. Basketball and is the sixth award winner in WKU history. He's the first since Elizabethtown's Steffphon Pettigrew in 2007. Hollingsworth was also the Gatorade Kentucky Player of the Year.

• Freshman guard Josh Anderson – ranked a top-60 prospect – is the only player at the prestigious Madison Prep (La.) Academy to start all four years of varsity. He played in four state championship games and won three straight to end his prep career.

• Freshman guard Jake Ohmer was the star of the 2017 Kentucky high school state tournament. He scored 106 points across three games – the 13th-most ever scored in a single Kentucky state tourney – and led his squad to the semifinals before falling by one to the eventual state champion. Ohmer caught the eye of Stansbury at the tournament and was offered a scholarship upon its conclusion.

STANSBURY NOTES

• Rick Stansbury's teams have been outstanding on their own turf, boasting a winning percentage at home of nearly 80 percent overall – and 88 percent in nonconference play – during his 15 seasons at the helm at Mississippi State and WKU.

• Stansbury notched his 300th career win at Florida Atlantic on Dec. 31, 2016. He finished the season with 308 career wins, including 293 dur-ing his time at Mississippi State, which are the 10th-most in SEC history.

• In Stansbury's 31 seasons as a head coach or assistant coach, his teams have gone to the postseason 18 times, with top-five seeds in the NCAA Tournament six times. The Bulldogs reached the postseason 11 times in Stansbury's 14 seasons as a head coach at Mississippi State.

• During Stansbury's final 10 years leading Mississippi State, only Ken-tucky won more SEC championships than his eight, and over his entire 14-year run at the helm, only Kentucky and Florida won more games.

• During Stansbury's time as a head coach at Mississippi State, only Vanderbilt had a higher graduation rate in the SEC, and the Bulldogs were third in the SEC with 41 academic honorees in 14 years.

• Of the top 30 games for attendance in MSU history, 26 came during Stansbury's run as head coach, including all of the top 10.

Tops Travel to Costa Rica

WKU men's basketball head coach Rick Stansbury didn't exactly play the lineups on the team's Costa Rica foreign tour that he anticipated. The Hilltoppers were forced to use some makeshift rotations across their three games in August in San Jose, Costa Rica, but Stansbury said their 3-0 results provided some valuable insight. "We had to play small for most of the tournament – something we haven't really practiced consistently – but what it allowed us to do was play a lot of guys," Stansbury said. "I saw a lot of different guys play and saw some strengths and some weaknesses." WKU notched two victories over Laurentian University from Ontario, Canada and one win over the Costa Rica National Team. The Hilltop-pers averaged 107 points per game and won their three contests by an average of 30.3 points. They shot 54.6 percent from the field over-all. Redshirt junior guard Lamonte Bearden led the team in scoring at 20 points per game without ever making a 3-pointer. He was 25 of 45 from the field and also tallied nine assists and eight steals.

Senior forward Justin Johnson, who returned to the program the day before the trip after spending the spring, summer and beginning of fall practice with the football team, averaged 18.3 points and 10 re-bounds. Johnson shot nearly 70 percent from the field.

Freshman guard Taveion Hollingsworth averaged 16.7 points and five rebounds, and led the team with 10 steals. Freshman guard Jake Ohmer averaged 10.3 points with seven made 3s.

Graduate senior guard Darius Thompson filled up the stat sheet by averaging 9.7 points, 6.7 assists and five rebounds per game. Thomp-son was extremely efficient with 20 combined assists against just four turnovers. WKU also got some hustle production from the rest of the lineup. Junior forward Jared Savage was forced to play out of position at the five spot on multiple occasions and responded by averaging 6.3 points and 6.7 rebounds. Freshman guard Marek Nelson averaged 6.3 points, went 8 of 9 from the field, tied for the team lead with three blocks and took the team's only charge of the trip. Senior guard Tyler Miller also got into the mix with eight steals, includ-ing six against the Costa Rica National Team. Johnson's return to the program first altered WKU's plans for the week, and the team got another wrinkle when graduate senior for-ward Dwight Coleby suffered a sprained heel eight minutes into the first game against Laurentian. Coleby had seven points and seven re-bounds at the time. But even with those adjustments, Stansbury said the three contests were invaluable for a team with so many new faces. "It's a totally new team," Stansbury said. "It gives us an idea of who we've got. Now going into October, it gives us a head start on that, versus trying to find it out in November when you're playing games."
