OPEN DOORS GRANTS PROGRAM / 2012

PROGRAMS

Throughout the year, the Open Doors Grants Program addresses individual women’s, women’s groups’ and organizations’ current needs in Tbilisi and the regions of Georgia.

Supported Initiatives: GRANT RECIPIENT: Center of Psychological Services REGION: Batumi, Achara PROJECT TITLE: Once Again Against Violence PROJECT DURATION: 1 month THE GROUP AIMS to continue its work with women, who experience

domestic violence through identifying and reacting on severe cases, mediating between conflicting parties, raising public awareness about gender based violence. Project involves visits in families, meetings with victims and survivors as well as social agency representatives. TV coverage of activities is also planned.

GRANT RECIPIENT: Initiative Group REGION:Tbilisi PROJECT TITLE: Promoting Cooperation on Gender Issues Among Students PROJECT DURATION: 3 months THE PROJECT AIMS to introduce students the ideas of collaboration for

advancing gender equality and to encourage interest in these matters. To achieve these goals, cycle of lectures and seminars on issues of gender and feminism are planned. Beneficiaries – students of TSU and Ilia State University selected on the basis of applications.

GRANT RECIPIENT:Tamta Melashvili and Anuk Beluga REGION: Tbilisi PROJECT TITLE: Say NO to LBT Violence PROJECT DURATION: 3 Months THE PROJECT AIMS raising public awareness on violence against LBT

people in Georgia, at the same time, increasing the communitys visibility. To achieve this goal, two thematic comics were designed, printing and spreading together with posters against homophobia and transphobia. For these comics stories were created based on experiences of the LBT community members.

GRANT RECIPIENT: Community Initiative “Nadikvari” REGION: Telavi, Kakheti PROJECT TITLE: Telavi Women for Women’s Rights PROJECT DURATION: 4 Months THE PROJECT AIMS to prevent violence against women and raise public

awareness on relevant issues. To achieve this goal debates will be held with students in Telavi as well as with the local population in villages. A Social worker, a gender specialist, a lawyer and a psychologist will be involved in this project. Informational brochures will be distributed at the meetings. The group also intends to create a web-site, where all information will be posted.

GRANT RECIPIENT: Solidarity for Development REGION: Zugdidi, Samegrelo PROJECT TITLE: Social Integration of Women with Disabilities PROJECT DURATION: 6 Months THE PROJECT AIMS at reduction of cases of human rights violations of

women with disabilities, particularly the blind women, through raising awareness in public and in their families. Training on women’s rights, domestic violence and the rights of persons with disabilities will be provided for the women with disabilities and their family members. The library will host listening of literary works recorded on audio CDs. 2 newspaper articles will be published, round table, street march and a café-evening are planned within the project.

GRANT RECIPIENT: For Better Future REGION: Tserovani, Mtskheta-Mtianeti PROJECT TITLE: Reconstruction of the Gathering Place PROJECT DURATION: 2 months THE PROJECT INTENDED to finish activities carried out by the Women’s

Fund in Georgia in partnership with the People of Peril Association with the support of the organization For Better Future in the Shavshvebi IDP settlement.

GRANT RECIPIENT: confidential REGION: Kyrgyzstan/Turkmenistan PROJECT TITLE: Ensuring Security of a Feminist Activist PROJECT DURATION: 4 months THE PROJECT AIMED to ensure security of a feminist activist. WFG provided

fiscal sponsorship grant from UAF to her in order to provide her with temporary shelter as well as expenses for her efforts to obtain visa of which she was many times denied.

GRANT RECIPIENT: Woman and Development REGION: Gori, Shida Kartli PROJECT TITLE: Ensuring Security of the W&D Staff and Beneficiaries PROJECT DURATION: 5 months Women and Development team encountered security challenges because of its

work with the survivors of domestic violence. The organization was attacked and threatened by the ex-husband of the beneficiary, who was temporarily staying in the organizations shelter. The provided grant ensured relocation of the office to a new confidential address as well as taking other security measures, such as installing security camera, etc.

Women’s Fund in Georgia in partnership with the Urgent Action Fund (UAF) announces the Rapid Response Grantmaking (RRG) Program, which provides timely small grants to support strategic interventions that take advantage of opportunities to advance women’s human rights anywhere in the world. Such opportunities arise when an unexpected event - positive or negative - creates a situation in which rapid intervention can have a significant impact.

WOMEN’S ECONOMIC INDEPENDENCE PROGRAM

2012

The program WOMEN’S ECONOMIC INDEPENDENCE IN THE POST-CONFLICT ZONE AND REMOTE REGIONS OF GEORGIA intends to empower women in the most vulnerable, poor and remote areas of Georgia. The program is being implemented with the support of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The program will continue for 3 years and will cover the following 4 regions of Georgia: Shida Kartli, Kakheti, Imereti and Racha.

Program activities include the implementation of three main components: Recruiting and choosing participant women from the target regions by testing; Training of selected women participants in ‘How to Start Own Business”; Small grants competition for trained women.

The program is being implemented in partnership with Dutch organization “Friends of Georgia Association” (SVGG). One of the founders of the association Giorgi Khutsishvili is leading intensive business trainings for the program participants.

In 2012 the program covered town Chiatura and villages Katskhi, Berevisa, Tskhrukveti, Perevi and town Tkibuli and villages Kursebi, Orpiri, Satsire, Khresili and Etseri in Imereti region. Town Ambrolauri and villages Znakva, Nikortsminda, Chrebalo, Tsesi, Sadmeli, Khvanchkara, Bostana, Likheti and Abari In Racha region.

106 women took part in four sessions of testing among which 78 were selected to attend the intensive trainings. In the whole 73 women were trained in the program which allowed them to develop business skills and elaborate profitable business plans (in Chiatura, Tkibuli and Ambrolauri). The submitted business plans were discussed on a public meeting between the WFG project team members and the training participants in order to incorporate women’s feedback and opinion in the decision-making process.

As a result of the GRANTS COMPETITIONS, 62 SMALL BUSINESSES were supported in 2012. The grants were awarded in the field of agriculture and service. Women’s Fund in Georgia is regularly conducting monitoring of supported initiatives both through interviewing and through site visits. The supported businesses are being monitored at all stages.

WOMEN’S FUND IN GEORGIA’SINSTITUTIONAL DEVELOPMENT2012

As a DGP grantee, in the scopes of the program supported by USAID Women’s Fund in Georgia was given a valuable opportunity to obtain capacity building assistance in developing WFG’s Monitoring and Evaluation Systems, Action Plan, HR Strategy and to conduct external evaluation of the Fund’s grant-making programs. The aim of the evaluation was to assess performance during 2009 – 2012, share the acquired experience and identify strengths and weaknesses of the Fund’s grant-making activities. The evaluation was made by the Applied Research Company (ARC) and outcomes of WFG’s four grant-making programs were evaluated.

Furthermore, WFG ORGANIZED 3-DAYS GRANTEE MEETING with the participation of WFG’s grant recipients forassessing programs’ results and impact. The meeting was held in the Hotel “Vere Palace”, where 70 grantees (representatives of women’s organizations and initiative groups, independent activists, rural women, etc.). were brought together to share their achievements and discuss their challenges. The meeting provided space for participatory evaluation and learning between the grantees and WFG members. The learning was incorporated into the future work of all participating women. The meeting was based on key topics of WFG’s new strategic plan and also FACILITATED NETWORKING BETWEEN GRANTEES AND SUPPORTED THEIR ACTIVE ENGAGEMENT WITH THE WOMEN’S MOVEMENT IN GEORGIA.

“PROMOTING THE CULTURE OF WOMEN`S HUMAN RIGHTS” PROGRAM 2012

Women’s Fund in Georgia announced grants competition “Promoting the Culture of Women’s Human Rights” to support initiatives aiming at changing practices, policies, attitudes, perceptions concerning women and their human rights in Georgia and to facilitate the process of building the culture of non-discrimination and achievement of gender equality in the country.

10 GRANTS were awarded within the “PROMOTING THE CULTURE OF WOMEN’S HUMAN RIGHTS” GRANTMAKING PROGRAM in 2012.

Supported Initiatives:GRANT RECIPIENT: Women for Regional DevelopmentREGION: Ozurgeti, GuriaPROJECT TITLE: “Know More, and Be Aware!”PROJECT DURATION: 7 MonthsTHE GROUP INTENDS to spread information and conduct educational activities related to the topic of women’s trafficking. The project implies involvement of media and community in the preventive measures of trafficking by getting statistical data on illegal migrants and rehabilitation of victims of trafficking. Training, presentation of documentary video about trafficking, as well presentation and discussion of the film is planned within the project. Information bank is going to be set up and the statistical information will be available on the web-page www.chemitemi.ge.

GRANT RECIPIENT: Women’s Community Organization “Nikozi”REGION: Village Zemo Nikozi, Shida KartliPROJECT TITLE: “How to Live Better”PROJECT DURATION: 8 monthsTHE PROJECT AIMS to improve self-esteem of women in the community of Nikozi and make them more active. They will attend training-seminars on the following topics: gender, human rights, women’s rights, communication, leadership, teamwork, volunteerism and community mobilization, advocacy, etc. The project envisions intellectual games for women and competitions in backgammon, which will contribute to the development of women’s leadership. On March 8, a meeting and discussion will be held, which will be dedicated to the women’s achievements.

GRANT RECIPIENT: Human Rights PriorityREGION: TbilisiPROJECT TITLE: “Woman, her Rights Defender”PROJECT DURATION: 7 monthsTHE PROJECT AIMS to provide legal services to women who have experienced violence. It also implies identification and dissemination of information about new methods and techniques of litigation among the professional circles as well as expanding the network of gender sensitive legal experts. In case of necessarily, psycho-social rehabilitation will be provided to survivors of violence with the help of the network of partner organizations along with the legal aid.

GRANT RECIPIENT: Karaleti Village Women’s Solidarity CenterREGION: Village Karaleti, Shida KartliPROJECT TITLE: “See Me Equal”PROJECT DURATION: 6 MonthsTHE PROJECT AIMS to develop feminist sensibility within community. For this aim, a youth club “Femini” will be set up which will be joined by 15 volunteers from 15 to 30 years. Trainings will be held for them by the organization staff on the following topics: “History of feminism”, “Women’s rights”, “Marriage contract”, “Community priorities research”, “Women and Media”. The club will host screenings and discussions of films on the topic of women’s rights. For pupils - a quiz on the topic - history of feminism will be organized. The winner will receive a gift. In addition, the Women’s Club will conduct a community needs assessment. The project also envisions publishing a newspaper “Feminist” and holding a photo exhibition “Women in Rural Areas”, where women’s problems and needs will appear.

GRANT RECIPIENT: Women for Democracy and DevelopmentREGION: Kutaisi, ImeretiPROJECT TITLE: “Raising Womens Awareness on Women’s Rightsand Gender Balance”PROJECT DURATION: 7 MonthsTHE PROJECT AIMS to raise awareness about women’s rights in the Bagdati municipality, and by using the legal mechanisms promote effective protection of women’s rights. The project is involves holding informational meetings and printing brochures as well as conducting trainings on the following issues: “Legal Framework for the Protection of Women’s Rights and Relevant International Documents” and “Practical Mechanisms for the Protection of Women’s Social and Economic Rights”. Trained Women will create an initiative group and will continue to work on women’s rights through advocacy and lobby.

GRANT RECIPIENT: We – for Healthy FutureREGION: Tserovani, Mtskheta-MtianetiPROJECT TITLE: “Womens Bike Club - for Healthy Life”PROJECT DURATION: 6 MonthsTHE PROJECT AIMS to create a womens bike-club for promoting healthy lifestyle at the refugee settlement. Respectively, the project involves equipping club with bicycles, a small advertising campaign and arrangement of 6 bike races, trainings and meetings.

GRANT RECIPIENT: Women and the WorldREGION: Bolnisi, Kvemo KartliPROJECT TITLE: “Girls Activation for Real Change”PROJECT DURATION: 6 MonthsCOALITION PROJECT AIMS to raise awareness within Azerbaijani, Armenian and Georgian 15-17-year-old girls living in Bolnisi villages about women’s rights and gender issues in order motivate their engagement, cooperation and encourage their action against gender-based violence. The project involves the establishment of a group of young women and their training (topics: gender equality, upbringing and traditions, conventions on human rights, domestic violence, social responsibility, etc.). Media production, such as TV show, video, posters against violence will be created. The conference will be held in Tbilisi.

GRANT RECIPIENT: Studio Mobile - Accent on ActionREGION: TbilisiPROJECT TITLE: “Feminism - Nearest Past and Present”PROJECT DURATION: 1 yearTHE AIM OF THE PROJECT is creating a documentary film about women’s rights and movement building (XX-XXI the turn of the century -present), which will be analytical, and at the same time, accessible to the broad audience and interesting. The project involves research activities, working on archives, video-shooting, editing, etc.

GRANT RECIPIENT: Civil Society Development Center and NGO “Helping Hand”REGION: TbilisiPROJECT TITLE: “gender.ge”PROJECT DURATION: 6 MonthsTHE PROJECT AIMS raising public awareness on gender issues and women’s human rights culture through the promotion of non-discriminatory environment, which includes using of Internet Television and the launching of an information campaign. 19 TV programs and 3 videos will be prepared on the topics: women’s labor rights, attitudes towards women in public and private agencies, media and women’s issues, women’s role in the war-affected families, etc. In addition to this, marathon will be organized to raise awareness against violence against women.

GRANT RECIPIENT: Kakheti Roma UnionREGION: Village Leninovka, KakhetiPROJECT TITLE: “Roma Young women’s and girls Reproductive Rights”PROJECT DURATION: 6 MonthsTHE AIM OF THE PROJECT is raising awareness of Roma women and girls in reproductive and sexual health and rights through an informational campaign. The project will include several components, including workshops and informational brochures (topics: reproductive rights, sexually transmitted infections, and methods of contraception, etc.). Materials will be collected from various clinics. Finally, a round table meeting will be organized where representatives of social service agency, medical clinics and different NGOs will participate to discuss SRHR challenges faced by Roma women.

In order to foster formation of local philanthropy in Georgia, the Women’s Fund in Georgia organized various philanthropic events and fundraisers during the year, including the Bloody Mary party, exhibition and discussion “Other 8 March”, Vagina Cupcake party, book presentation and lecture “Woman Beyond the Kitchen”, Film screening and discussion – “Feminization of Migration in Georgia”, Fundraising Concert „Dance 2 Change: Part 2” with Kung Fu Junkie, Film Screening and cocktail Party “Salt White”, “Riot Girls@Frontline Café” discussion with Riot Grrrl members on art and feminist activism.

Furthermore, WFG’s supporter and individual donor Sophia Tabatadze organized her birthday party in benefit of the Fund; exhibition-sale of WFG’s grantees’ organic products was held in “Vere-Palace”; “Roma Party” with the participation of WFG’s grantee/partner Kakheti Roma Union was organized; two concerts were held in the scopes of the 16 Days Campaign Against Violence Against Women: “No Violence!” with Maggie Gogitidze and the Band, and “Power through Fun!” (with various artists).

WFG organized two events dedicated exclusively to visibility of the Fund: Multidisciplinary Exposition- PHOBIA of contemporary artist Ia Mchedlishvili; and “Yes, Women behind the Wheel” in cooperation with the Women’s Auto-sport Federation of Georgia.Two meetings were organized by WFG in partnership with the Taso Foundation in order to advance the process of local philanthropy development in Georgia: Strategic Collaboration for Local Philanthropy Development for local women’s organizations, on the one hand, and for the business sector, on the other hand.

WFG produced two short films: “WFG’s Non-Grantmaking Activities” and the “Institutional Video of the Women’s Fund in Georgia”. In addition to this, several PR materials were produced for PR and fundraising events: new buttons with the message “I’m a Donor”, two types of new t-shirts on the issue of diversity, and feminist thermal mugs.

All events were organized for the purpose of raising public awareness on gender issues, feminist philanthropy, WFG’s work, and for raising local funds for WFG’s grant-making budget.

WFG COMES TOSAN FRANCISCO / 2012

On 9 May 2012, Women’s Fund in Georgia organized a fundraising event in San Francisco, which was kindly hosted by the Global Fund for Women – partner and supporter of the Women’s Fund in Georgia. Guests were invited to meet WFG’s Executive Director and Program Coordinator and learn about the Fund’s work, get inspired by stories of feminist activist from Georgia, and enjoy Georgian folk music.

The amount raised during the event was fully used for WFG’s grantmaking budget.
