MEMORANDUM FOR: Mysore S. Nataraja, Section LeaderEngineering BranchDivision of Waste Management
FROM: John T. BuckleyEngineering BranchDivision of Waste Management
SUBJECT: TRIP REPORT COVERING THE ROCK MECHANICSSYMPOSIUM ON JUNE 25-27, 1984
The 25th U.S. Symposium on Rock Mechanics was held at Northwestern Universityin Evanston, Illinois on June 25-27, 1984. Technical papers were presented in24 major areas. The program which outlines the speakers, authors, andpresentation topics can be seen as Attachment 1 to this memo.
Wednesday morning and afternoon presentations dealt with the topic of NuclearWaste Isolation. The morning session consisted predominantly of technicalpresentations dealing with the rock mechanics aspects of repository design.Papers presented in the afternoon session dealt primarily with an overview ofthe rock mechanics effort to date and the role of in-situ testing in the designof a nuclear waste repository (see Attachment 1 for the authors and topics ofpresentations).
Following the seven presentations on Nuclear Waste Isolation on Wednesdayafternoon, the speakers gathered on stage as a panel to answer questions fromthe audience and to discuss opposing points of view. The NRC was representedon the panel by John T. Greeves. Many of the questions from the audience weredirected at John and dealt with the NRC position concerning the role of in-situtesting prior to granting a construction authorization. The audience respondedfavorably to the dialogue between panel members.
A list of symposium attendees is presented with this memo as Attachment 2.Late registrants to the symposium are not listed in Attachment 2. Allregistered attendees of the symposium were given a hard cover copy of theproceedings. A copy can be found in my office (room 483).
