The Secret of Fatima and the Chastisemnet of the WorldApoc. 8:13

"Woe to the Inhabitants of the Earth"by Father Paul Leonard, B.Ph., S.T.B., M.Div.

Few who have heard the message of Our Lady of Fatima have been able to fully grasp the gravity of that warning which the Blessed Virgin addressed to the whole world. All too many consider it to be merely a simple call to conversion, or a mere "private revelation" with which they need not concern themselves.

Nothing could be further from the truth. Indeed, Our Holy Father, John Paul II, has stated that the message of Our Lady of Fatima is addressed to the whole world, and is more urgent today than it was when Our Lady first revealed it in 1917.

The heart of the Fatima message is contained in the Secret, where Our Lady said to the children:

''You saw Hell where the souls of poor sinners go. In order to save them, God wishes to establish in the world devotion to My Immaculate Heart.

"If people do what I ask, many souls will be saved and there will be peace. The war (World War I) is going to end. But if people do not stop offending God, another even worse, will begin in the reign of Pius XI.

"When you see a night illumined by an unknown light, know that it is the great sign that God gives you that He is going to punish the world by means of war, hunger and persecution of the Church and the Holy Father. To prevent it I shall come to ask for the consecration of RUSSIA to My Immaculate Heart, and the Communion of reparation on the first Saturdays.

"If they attend to My requests, Russia will be converted and the world will have peace. If not, Russia will spread its errors throughout the world, fomenting wars and persecutions against the Church. The good will be martyred, the Holy Father will have much to suffer, and various nations will be annihilated.

"In the end My Immaculate Heart will triumph. The Holy Father will consecrate RUSSIA to Me: it will be converted, and a certain period of peace will be granted to the world. In Portugal, the dogmas of the faith will always be kept . . ." (at this point, the third part of the Secret begins, commonly called "The Third Secret").

The first part of the Secret consists in the vision of hell. Therefore, Our Lady told the children: "You saw hell where the souls of poor sinners go. In order to save them, God wishes to establish in the world devotion to My Immaculate Heart."

Thus, we see that the ultimate reason for this heavenly intervention is the salvation of souls from eternal perdition.

Our Lady spoke in the future tense when She said: "I shall come to ask for the consecration of Russia to My Immaculate Heart ..."

In fulfillment of this promise that She made on July 13, 1917, Our Lady came to Sister Lucia in the apparition of June 13, 1929 at Tuy where She declared: "The moment has come in which God asks the Holy Father to make in union with all the bishops of the world, the consecration of RUSSIA to My Immaculate Heart, promising to save it by this means."1

By these words the Mother of God made clear that:

1. RUSSIA must be specified as the object of the consecration.

2. The consecration of Russia must be performed not only by the Pope, but it must be a collegial act performed together with all the bishops of the world.

3. "By this means", i.e. by the means of this consecration of Russia, Russia will be saved and peace will be given to the world.

Sister Lucia is Told by Jesus: "Make it Known to My Ministers"

In the Cathedral of San Fernando La Union, the bishop there prayed with the Faithful that the Consecration of Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary by the Pope and the bishops take place soon.

That Russia must be explicitly named as the object of the consecration which must be performed jointly by the Pope together with all the bishops of the world is beyond legitimate dispute, since it was Jesus Himself, speaking of the delay in the execution of this command, Who told Sister Lucia to "Make it known to My ministers", and she2, acting as His mouthpiece has declared in writing that the "solemn and public act of reparation and consecration of Russia" will bring about an end to the persecution, ". . . the good Lord promises to end the persecution in Russia, if the Holy Father will himself make a solemn act of reparation and consecration of Russia . . . as well as ordering all the bishops of the Catholic world to do the same."3

On June 12, 1930, Sister Lucia wrote: ". . . the Holy Father will himself make a solemn public act of reparation and consecration of Russia . . . His Holiness must also order all the bishops of the Catholic world to do the same."4

Pope Pius XII had not been informed about the necessity that all the bishops participate in this act, and therefore he alone consecrated Russia, without the participation of the bishops. Sister Lucia explained in writing, that this was not what Our Lady had requested.5

Similarly, on March 21, 1982, Sister Lucia declared in the presence of the Apostolic Nuncio to Portugal, Archbishop Sante Portalupi, Dr. Lacerda and Msgr. Alberto Cosme do Amaral, Bishop of Leiria-Fatima, that the Pope must select a date on which to order the bishops of the whole world to make a public, solemn act of reparation and consecration of RUSSIA to the Most Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, each in his own cathedral and at the same time as the act performed by the Pope.

Unfortunately, however, due to the intervention of a certain prelate, the text which eventually was forwarded to the Pope through the diplomatic bag did not precisely indicate the conditions as Sister Lucia had stated them.

Pope John Paul II consecrated the world on May 13, 1982, but in the following year, on the afternoon of March 19, 1983, Sister Lucia read her prepared statement to Archbishop Portalupi, who was accompanied by two distinguished witnesses, Dr. Lacerda and Father Messias. In that statement Sister Lucia stated:

1) "The consecration of Russia has not been made as Our Lady has requested." and

2) "I could not say so because I did not have the permission of the Holy See."

When the Pope again performed the consecration of the world on March 25, 1984, Russia was not named, and all the bishops of the world were not ordered to participate in the act. Since Our Lady of Fatima made Her request for the consecration of Russia, no consecration that any Pope has performed fulfilled those two conditions which Our Lady of Fatima stipulated at Tuy, namely that:

1) Russia be solemnly consecrated by

2) the Pope and all the bishops of the Catholic world.

Our Lady was Very Precise in Her RequestIt must be emphasized that Our Lady made a very precise and simple request, stipulating two conditions that must be fulfilled if the consecration is to be validly performed. If those conditions are not fulfilled, then Our Lady of Fatima's request remains unfulfilled.

The Sacred Scriptures6 record a similar case where the prophet Elisha told the Syrian general Naaman the two conditions that must be fulfilled in order that he be cured of leprosy: 1) that he bathe seven times 2) in the river Jordan. If Naaman had bathed only five or six times, or if he had bathed in any river other than the Jordan, he would never have been cured, regardless of the number of repeated attempts he might have made on his own terms rather than God's.

Likewise, it does not matter how many times the Pope consecrates Russia (or the world); He must fulfill those two clearly stated conditions that Our Lady laid down, otherwise Russia will not be converted and the world will not be cleansed from the leprosy of Communism.

By delaying the execution of Our Lord's command, entire nations will be annihilated and a multitude of souls will be lost for all eternity.

Time is Running Out for the Pope,the Bishops and Us

help throughout our Pilgrim Virgin Visit to the Philippines.

At the time when God sent Our Lady to convey His command that Russia be consecrated by the Pope and bishops, He was expecting swift obedience from them in this matter.

However, the pastors of the Church did not comply with His will, and therefore Our Lord, Jesus Christ Himself, spoke to Sister Lucia on August 19, 1931 at Rianxo (Rianjo), Spain, and expressed His displeasure to her saying: "Make it known to My ministers that it has been given to them that they follow the example of the King of France in delaying the execution of My command, and that they will follow him into misfortune."

This is a very stern warning spoken by Jesus Christ Himself, since the example to which He refers was that of the disobedience of the French King who failed to consecrate France to His Sacred Heart. Louis XIV and Louis XV did nothing, and finally, after being jailed, Louis XVI tried to obey the command of God but could not make the required public and solemn act, and in 1793, he was beheaded at the guillotine.

Our Lord has made it unequivocally clear that a certain period of time has been given to the Pope to execute the command, after which, if the consecration will still not have been performed properly, then some of the pastors of the Church will pay for their disobedience with their lives.

It is important also to consider, that after a certain point, such as the outbreak of war, the pastors of the Church may be physically unable to carry out the consecration, as was the case with Louis XVI, who unsuccessfully attempted to carry out the consecration of France after it was already too late.

God is Ready to Show Mercy Towards RussiaOn January 21, 1935, Sister Lucia wrote, saying: "About three years ago, Our Lord was very displeased because His request had not been attended to and I made this fact known to the bishop in a letter . . . from an intimate conversation with Him, it seems that He is ready to show mercy towards Russia as He promised five years ago and which He wishes so much to save."

In another letter, dated May 18, 1936, Sister Lucia wrote: "About the other questions, if it will be convenient to insist in order to obtain the consecration of Russia . . . I have spoken to Our Lord about the subject and not too long ago I asked Him why He would not convert Russia without the Holy Father making the consecration, (He replied) 'Because I want My whole Church to acknowledge that consecration as a triumph of the Immaculate Heart of Mary so that it may extend its cult later on and put the devotion to the Immaculate Heart beside the devotion to My Sacred Heart . . . The Holy Father, pray much for the Holy Father, he will do it but it will be late. Nevertheless, the Immaculate Heart of Mary will save Russia. It has been entrusted to Her.'"

God Chose 'Russia'These words, which Jesus Christ Himself spoke, made it clear why the consecration of the world does not suffice, but Russia by name must be clearly singled out as the object of the consecration. God has entrusted Russia to Mary in a particular and special way: He has designated Russia as the special object of His divine predilection.

In order that Russia become the beneficiary of the singular and extraordinary grace to which Providence has predestined it, God requires that Russia be especially dedicated to Himself through Mary; and this is to be accomplished by means of the consecration of Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary in a solemn and public ceremony.

Since God is Lord of all and Creator of Heaven and earth, He is entirely within His rights to command that a nation be consecrated to Himself, and this especially if that nation has officially apostatized from Him.

Russia is an apostate nation, for as the Fathers Lehmann explain: "Before God, a nation has apostatized when  its government has posited an act of apostasy, though many members of that nation may have remained faithful."7

God has special plans for Russia. He has, according to the inscrutable designs of His Providence, chosen Russia for Himself, and therefore He has commanded that Russia be consecrated to Himself through the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

Obviously, therefore, the general consecration of the entire world does not suffice for this purpose. There may be other apostate and sinful nations, but God, in virtue of divine predilection, has decreed that Russia become the vessel of His mercy.

As was the case when David was singled out from among his brethren to be the recipient of a singular and extraordinary grace, and consequently David alone was anointed: 8 likewise God has revealed through the message of Fatima, that Russia, in a very particular way, has been singled out by God for a divine purpose, and therefore he has commanded that Russia in particular be specially consecrated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

There is a Choice: Consecration and Conversion or Enslavement and Annihilation

It is important to bear in mind that Our Lord Himself makes it explicitly clear that He will not convert Russia until the Holy Father performs that collegial consecration of RUSSIA together with all the bishops of the Catholic world.

Our Lady of Fatima revealed the one and only means that will prevent Russia from imposing its atheist regime throughout the world and annihilating entire nations in the process.

The Pope is faced with a choice: He can order the bishops of the world to consecrate Russia with him, and the result will be the conversion of the most powerful and geographically largest nation on earth. The immediate result of this will be a cessation of the mass subversion that the Communists are presently waging against the civilized, and formerly Christian world.

The so-called 'liberation fronts' of every description will immediately lose their source of arms and money. The infiltration and subversion of the Church which the Communists have waged will come to an abrupt end.

Our Lady has promised unconditionally that when the Holy Father fulfills Her request, Russia will be converted and a period of true peace will be given to the world.

However, if the Pope believes that it is not presently opportune to order the bishops of the world to consecrate RUSSIA with him, then he can be certain that regardless of whatever means he takes, the Soviet Union will impose its atheist tyranny upon the whole world by force of arms. Our Lady Herself said that Russia would spread its errors "throughout the world".

In the process there will be a bloodbath of persecution of the Church and mass destruction. Sister Lucia elaborated this topic on December 26, 1957, saying to Father Fuentes: "Tell them Father that many times the Most Holy Virgin told my cousins Francisco and Jacinta, as well as myself, that many nations will disappear from the earth. She said that Russia will be the instrument of chastisement chosen by Heaven to punish the whole world if we do not beforehand obtain the conversion of that poor nation."

The Pope's Authority is OpposedThe question to be asked is this:  Is there any price too high to pay for world peace and the well-being of the Church? Is there any price too high to pay in order to prevent a multitude of souls from going to hell for all eternity?

Unfortunately, too many ecclesiastics believe that Our Lady is asking too much from them: That the Pope should order the bishops to do anything offends their conciliaristic notion of collegiality.

Since the Second Vatican Council, many so-called "theologians" would have us believe that there is a new commandment which the Pope must observe: the Pope must not exercise his universal jurisdiction over the Church without the permission of the national bishops' conferences. It is as though the Supreme Pontiff is expected to defer to his subordinates as though they were his equals and not his subjects.

No wonder little Jacinta could only exclaim "Poor Holy Father!", when she was given the grace to foresee the suffering that the Pope would have to endure. This was already prophesied in the twelfth century by St. Hildegard of Bingen

who foretold what will happen to the Church after Germany will have been divided: "People will renounce the authority of the Pope. Individual countries will prefer their own church rulers to the Pope."

Certainly pressure is being exerted to prevent the Pope from ordering the bishops to perform the consecration. When the Holy Father consecrated the world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, on May 13, 1982, shortly afterward he publicly stated that this was all he could do "under the concrete circumstances."9

When he consecrated the world again on March 25, 1984, the Pope afterward acknowledged publicly that Our Lady's request remained as yet unfulfilled when he addressed Our Lady speaking of "those peoples for whom You Yourself are awaiting our act of consecration and entrusting"10

Again, "What Our Lady wants", Sister Lucia explained to Professor William T. Walsh, "is that the Pope and all the bishops in the world shall consecrate Russia to Her Immaculate Heart on one special day. If this is done, She will convert Russia and there will be peace. If this is not done, the errors of Russia will spread through every country in the world." As recently as July 20, 1987, Sister Lucia has again stated (to Enrique Romero) that the consecration that Our Lady requested has not been done.11

Difficulties of Consecrating Russia are Little Compared to Consequences of Not Doing It

The difficulties and obstacles that have thus far hindered the Pope from performing the consecration that Our Lady requested may be considerable, but when one considers the consequences of any further delaying of the execution of it, those difficulties appear as nothing in comparison.

On September 10, 1984, Bishop Cosme do Amaral, Bishop of Leiria-Fatima, declared (in the Aula Magna of the Technical University of Vienna) that the content of the third part of the Secret of Fatima concerns our faith: "The loss of faith of a continent is worse than the annihilation of a nation; and it is true that faith is continually diminishing in Europe."

On November 11, 1984, the Italian journal Jesus published an interview in which Cardinal Ratzinger spoke even more clearly about the content of the "third Secret". Asked by the interviewer, Vittorio Messori, if Ratzinger had read the Secret, His Eminence answered: "Yes, I have read it."

While explaining the reason why he thought it had not been publicly revealed, Ratzinger mentioned the topics with which the Secret deals: "the dangers threatening the faith and the life of the Christian, and therefore the world. And then the importance of the 'last things' (the last events at the end of time) . . . the things contained in this 'third Secret' correspond to what has been announced in Scripture, and has been said again and again in many other Marian apparitions ..."

Fatima Not a Private RevelationHere, Cardinal Ratzinger has confirmed the position taken by the Carmelite theologian, Father Joseph de Ste. Marie, that the message of Fatima is not merely a "private revelation" but it is the fulfillment of biblical prophecy which pertains to the deposit of faith.

Precisely, Our Lady's "third Secret" corresponds to what the Scripture has announced concerning the novissima, the apocalyptic revelation set forth in the Gospels, Epistles, Apocalypse, Daniel and the eschatological texts of the major and minor prophets.

The Sacred Scriptures reveal that before the coming of the Antichrist, "the man of lawlessness, the son of perdition", there must first take place the apostasy.12 Prophetic revelations concerning these events have been set forth again and again in many Marian apparitions, notably in the apparitions of Our Lady of La Salette and Our Lady of Good Fortune in Quito, Ecuador.13

At La Salette on September 19, 1846, Our Lady revealed to Melanie:

God will strike in an unprecedented way. Woe to the inhabitants of the earth! God will exhaust His wrath upon them, and no one will be able to escape so many afflictions together . . .

Everywhere there will be extraordinary wonders, as the true faith has faded and false light brightens the people. Woe to the Princes of the Church who think only of piling riches upon riches to protect their authority and dominate with pride.

The Vicar of My Son will suffer a great deal, because for a while the Church will yield to a large persecution, a time of darkness, and the Church will witness a frightful crisis.

Heresies, Corruption, CalamitiesIn the apparition of Our Lady of Good Fortune, which took place on February 2, 1634, the Mother of God revealed to Mother Mary Anne of Jesus Torres:

. . . at the end of the 19th century and for a large part of the 20th, various heresies will flourish on this earth which will have become a free republic.14The precious light of the Faith will go out in souls because of the almost total moral corruption;  in those times there will be great physical and moral calamities, in private and in public.

The little number of souls keeping the faith and practicing the virtues will undergo cruel and unspeakable suffering; through their long, drawn out martyrdom many of them will go to their death because of the violence of their sufferings, and those will count as martyrs who gave their lives for Church or for country.

To escape from being enslaved by these heresies will call for great strength of will, constancy, courage and great trust in God, all of which are gifts from the merciful love of My Divine Son to those He will have chosen for the work of restoration . . . there will come moments when everything seems lost and paralyzed, and just then comes the happy beginning of the complete restoration.

... having gained control of all the social classes, the sects will tend to penetrate with great skill into the heart of families to destroy even the children. ... The innocence of childhood will almost disappear. Thus priestly vocations will be lost, it will be a real disaster. Priests will abandon their sacred duties and will depart from the path marked out for them by God. Then the Church will go through a dark night for lack of a Prelate and father to watch over it with love, gentleness, strength and prudence, and numbers of priests will lose the spirit of God, thus placing their souls in great danger.

... And to scatter these black clouds blocking the brilliant dawning of the freedom of the Church, there will be a terrible war in which the blood of priests and of religious will flow ... that night will be so horrible that wickedness will seem triumphant. Then will come My time: in astounding fashion I shall destroy satan's pride, casting him beneath My feet, chaining him up in the depths of hell, leaving Church and country freed at last from his cruel tyranny.

We have seen a profound crisis engulf and paralyze the Church from within. Father Cornelio Fabro, one of the most respected scholars in the Catholic world, pointed out in his Problematica della Teologia Contemporanea, that the Church is presently undergoing the gravest crisis that it has ever faced in its history.

Pope Paul VI himself lamented the fact that the Church seemed to be undergoing its own auto demolition. It has reached the point where God is mocked in irreverent and even sacrilegious parodies of the sacred liturgy15 which take place in churches that were once consecrated for the purpose of offering the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

In those unfortunate churches that are being desecrated in this way it has been fulfilled as the Psalm foretold: "The enemy has destroyed everything in the sanctuary." For those who still possess a Catholic spirit, it is indeed a bitter thing to see the Scripture fulfilled in this way.

So many priests and false theologians openly attack the dogmas of the Eucharist as Father McKee explains in his aptly titled book, The Enemy Within the Gate.

Indeed, "The kings of the earth and all the inhabitants of the world would not have believed that the adversary and the enemy should enter in by the Gates of Jerusalem." (Lam. 4:12) yet precisely this has happened before our eyes, and www.fatima.org

yet for so many priests and prelates it seems to be "business as usual", as though there were nothing to be alarmed about in the post-conciliar Church.

The Church is divided into two hostile camps: Traditional-Conservatism which upholds the doctrine of the Faith, and Liberal-Progressivism which promotes post-conciliar reform.

Father Alonso, who was the official archivist of Fatima for sixteen years has indicated that the Secret of Fatima is an indictment against the post-conciliar reform, and it is for this reason that it has not been revealed to the world.16 It is the period of the so-called "post conciliar reforms" which has ushered in what Father Louis Bouyer refers to as The Decomposition of Catholicism.

Vast sectors of the clergy and faithful have defected from the Catholic faith and now profess beliefs that are radically at variance with the dogmas of the Faith. Seminaries have become cesspools of heresy and vice. Our Holy Father himself said: ". . . how many Christians have gone in the opposite direction to the one indicated in the message of Fatima. Sin has thus made itself firmly at home in the world and the denial of God has become widespread ..."17

God Wants Us to Act Too!"God," as Saint Augustine said, "Who made man without him will not save man without him", has mercifully revealed that which must be done for the sake of restoring order to the Church and the world, but He demands human participation in the undertaking. God has entrusted the restoration to His Mother, who revealed at Fatima the only means that can prevent the catastrophe that threatens to erupt at any moment.

The message of Fatima is not a private revelation, 18 but the fulfillment of biblical prophecy, and therefore it imposes an obligation on the Church. Our Holy Father, John Paul II said at Fatima that "the message of Fatima is so deeply rooted in the Gospel and the whole of tradition, that the Church feels that the message imposes a commitment on Her."19

That commitment is to obey the command that God has communicated through the Blessed Virgin. In addition to prayer, penance, sacrifice, and reparation, God has commanded the Pope to consecrate specifically RUSSIA to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, in a solemn and public ceremony together with all the Catholic bishops of the world.

It has been seventy-one years since Our Lady of Fatima came from Heaven to deliver Her message of warning to the world. During that time there has taken place a precipitous decline in the Church and the world. This would have been averted  if the Pope and the bishops had fulfilled Our Lady of Fatima's request, for it was She who said: "Only She can help you."

The world is now on the brink of total subjugation to godless Communist tyranny by means of the incalculable destruction and carnage of high technology

warfare. It appears now that after "seventy years should be accomplished the desolation of Jerusalem,"20 seventy years in which the modernists have done more damage than the Arians, the time of mercy is about to be succeeded by the day of wrath: God will exhaust His wrath upon the inhabitants of the earth, 21 and only then all things will be restored in Christ.

God Does Not Ask MuchIt is for this reason therefore that I now appeal to the bishops and the Pope to heed the dire warning that God has communicated to them through Our Lady of Fatima. God is not asking of them any severe penance nor does He require immense expenditures of monetary wealth.

He is asking that the Pope and the bishops perform a solemn ceremony which only requires that they recite one prayer. After the immense expenditures of the Second Vatican Council and two Conclaves in 1978, surely it is not a great effort that God demands of the pastors of the Church as a means to restore peace and order to the Church and the world.

Some of the bishops have reacted with hostility to Our Lady's request, and like Naaman, they turn away with indignation. I therefore take this occasion to point out what Naaman's servants said to him when he refused to obey the simple divine instruction that he relieved from Elisha: "If the prophet had bid thee do some great thing, surely thou shouldst have done it: how much rather what he now hath said to thee."22

Indeed, unless the Pope and the bishops obey the command of Our Lord given through Our Lady of Fatima that they consecrate Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, then all the inhabitants of the earth will experience what is foretold by the words of Sacred Scripture: "Woe to the Inhabitants of the Earth."

Yet those who have striven to obey and make known and obeyed the Message of Fatima may take heart in the words of Sister Lucy of Fatima who said: "Our Lady will protect all Her Dear Ones."23
