Through JESUS CHRIST,God made himself known

Spoke and acted not only onbehalf of God, but as God

Himself, in the flesh

“ In the beginning was the WORD;

and the Word was with God;

and the Word was God…and the Word became flesh,

and made his dwelling among us” (Jn. 1:1,14)

Christ not just an important historical figure

GOD – the one who gives the

true meaning of life, the

source or true happiness

“Many millions throughout the ages have venerated thename of Jesus, but few have understood him and fewerstill have tried to put into practice what he wanted to seedone. His words have been twisted and turned to meaneverything, anything, and nothing. His name has been

used and abused to justify crimes, to frighten children, and to inspire men and women to heroic foolishness.Jesus had been more frequently honored andworshipped for what he did not mean that for what he

did mean. The supreme irony is that sore of the things heopposed most strongly in the world of his time wereresurrected, preached, and spread more widelythroughout the world- in his name”( Albert Nolan O.P., Jesus Before Christianity, p. 5

As Filipinos, we have shown preference for twoimages of Christ

IMAGE STRENGTHS WEAKNESSES

THE

SANTO

NIÑO

(Christ

Child)

The image of the boy Jesus affirms

the reality of the incarnation. It

teaches us in a visual manner that Godreally became human, and by making

himself part of a human family, he has

become more accessible for all of us.

Likewise, the Santo Niño shows us

God’s identification with the “littleones”. As a child, God became little,

weak for our sakes. Therefore, when

we protect and defend the little ones

of society, we are upholding the image

of God in them. Finally, the Santo Niño reveals to us

the condition for being part of God’s

Kingdom, that is, to be childlike

The image of

the Santo Niño

tends to confinethe appreciation

of Jesus to his

childhood

It may also give

the impressionof a

“domesticated”

God, a “Catholic

Doll”

•God really became

human, and being a manlike us, he has made

himself even moreaccessible.

From Christ, the Sto. Niño, we learn that:

• Christ identifies himself with the little ones. Asa child, he is a God who became weak for our

sakes. When we defend and protect theweak, we preserve the image of God in them.

• Christ favors the child-like. It is by being likechildren that we are able to enter the

Kingdom of Heaven.USTIR-GVC 2012

IMAGE STRENGTHS WEAKNESSES

THE

NAZARENO

(Suffering

Christ)

The image of the suffering

Christ tells us of God’scompassion for humanity. In

Jesus, the infinite God did not

only become one of us, he also

bore our pains. So great was his

compassion for us that he foundus worthy dying for.

When we look at the image of

the suffering and dead Christ, we

learn that sometimes the

innocent would have to sufferfor the sake of the guilty.

Jesus, the Nazareno inspires us

to bear our sufferings patiently

and meritoriously.

The image of

the sufferingChrist may

leave out the

resurrection

event

The images mayinspire passive

suffering rather

than active

struggle against

unjust affliction.

•Christ is not a stranger to our sufferings

•Christ found us “worth dying for”.•Christ is the supreme example of“ pagmamalasakit”. He not only became one ofus, he even bore our pains.•Suffering is not only for the guilty, but

mysteriously, even the innocent suffer. Infaith, w accept that there are certain things wehave to suffer for the sake of others.

From Christ, the Nazareno and the Sto.Entierro, we learn that:

Other Filipino Popular Devotions to Our Lord

Devotion to the Sacred Heart has two

elements: consecration and

reparation:

1. We consecrate ourselves to theSacred Heart by acknowledging Him

as Creator and Redeemer and as

having full rights over us as King of

Kings, by repenting, and by resolving

to serve Him.

2. We make reparations for the

indifference and ingratitude with

which He is treated and for leaving

Him abandoned by humanity.USTIR-GVC 2012

The most popular devotion to the

Divine Mercy of Our Lord is the

THREE O’CLOCK HABIT, a prayer

which commemorates the death of our Lord and the outpour of God’s

mercy as a consequence of that

death.

The devotion to the Divine Mercy demands that we :

1. Ask for God’s Mercy

2. Be Merciful

3. Completely Trust in Jesus.

“save his people from their sins” (Mt. 1:21) –

the mission of Jesus

Salvation –“ the great gift from

God which is liberation from all

that oppresses man, but which

is above all liberation from sin

and from evil, within the joy of

knowing God and being knownby him, of seeing him and

entrusting oneself to him”

(Pope Paul VI , Evangelium Nuntiandi)

empowered to

conquer sin and all

others obstacles that

hinder us from

enjoying our dignity as

THREE ROLES THAT JESUS ASSUMED:

1. CHRIST, THE PRIEST – Jesus is the mediator between

God and man. His life is characterized by holiness andprayer. He offered the sacrifice of himself and for theforgiveness of our sins.

2. CHRIST, THE PROPHET – Jesus spoke on behalf of the

Father and proclaimed the coming of God’s Kingdom. He preached the word of God both through his wordsand actions. He performed miracles as signs of hisdivine authority.

3. CHRIST, THE KING – he spent is life in selfless serviceto others. He showed that true leadership is about thebetterment of the lives of people, especially thosewho are suffering, not about using one’s power todominate.
