Participant Media

Participant Media, a multi-faceted entertain-

ment production company, chose Wolcott

to design their new signature headquarters

space in Beverly Hills. The company,

producers of the Oscar winning documen-

tary, ‘An Inconvenient Truth’, occupy

18,000 square feet in an Ehrlich designed

LEED certified building.

The carefully planned interiors accommo-

date executive, administrative, production,

and marketing staffs that required the

incorporation of a variety of work styles;

private offices, workstations, benching,

conference rooms, and ah-hoc meeting

spaces. The Wolcott team integrated

supergraphics into the space to express the

firm’s product and energize the environ-

ment.

Acknowledging the LEED base building

construction, the team chose sustainable

materials such as cork, reclaimed lumber,

and rapidly renewable woods to adhere to

Beverly Hills civic guidelines as well as satisfy

client directives.

Colliers international comissioned the

Wolcott team to remodel 32,000 square feet

over two floors of its Downtown Los

Angeles headquarters. Wolcott developed a

transformative plan, which realized corpo-

rate cultural and business objectives. The

team was tasked with simultaneously

accomodating the need for traditional

offices within an open space concept.

The final design resulted in a distinctive

office space that maximizes the impact of

the penthouse view of Los Angeles and

provides a contemporary showplace that

embodies the bold attitude of the client.

A global leader in music rights management,

Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI®) is an American

performing rights organization representing

more than 500,000 songwriters, composers

and music publishers in all genres of music

and a catalog of more than 7.5 million

musical works.

Wolcott provided interior architecture and

graphic design services for the renovation of

BMI’s existing 11,000 square foot offices.

The new design direction featured a modern

aesthetic that highlights BMI’s culture,

writers, artists, and brand.

The new space integrates a lounge / recep-

tion area in the lobby that was designed

around a digital piano. The balance of the

space contains conference room, small

lounge/collaborative areas, kitchen, open

work area, and private offices. Environmen-

tal graphics were used throughout the space

to express the creativity of BMI’s business.

Animation Studio

Wolcott was selected by a major entertain-

ment company to design a new home for

its growing direct to video animation

division. The team was charged with

converting an old warehouse facility into a

multi-functional production facility that

included employee amenities such as fitness

center, café, and garden areas. The team

met the challenges of adapting the existing

90,000 square foot single-story into an

energizing and functional production

facility.

The new facility not only houses the

administrative and artistic staff but also

story rooms, conference areas, editorial

bays, a recording studio and screening

rooms. The heavily involved client helped

the Wolcott team understand the flow of

production and its requisite needs, while

the designers provided finishes and an

overall aesthetic concept.

The exterior was developed as a campus

with landscaped courtyards and water

features. The interior space is characterized

with punctuated color, graphics, open lid

conference rooms, and numerous lounge

areas.

As a records management leader in the

healthcare industry, CAP Management

Systems (CMS) provides administrative

infrastructure and compliance support to

physicians and hospitals. Wolcott was

engaged by CMS to provide full service

interior and graphic design services. The

22,000 square foot renovation consisted of a

transformative plan that was open, energiz-

ing, and creative.

The design team worked with CMS to create

a space that integrates the corporate brand

and business focus. To reinforce the branded

direction, the WAI team incorporated color

accents in strategic locations to create energy

within the space. Modern elements in

lighting, furniture, and finish selections were

used to emphasize a contemporary feel; one

that moves away from the typical monochro-

matic “healthcare” environment.

In order to highlight the core of their business

- records management services, a main focus

of the design was to showcase CMS’ data

center and IT room. The data center is

positioned as an entry focal point to express

the technological importance of CMS’

business component. Enclosed in glass, the

data center becomes a modern and feature

element of the space.

RealD, the industry leader in digital stereo-

scopic image projection, called on Wolcott

to design their 32,000 square foot Beverly

Hills headquarters. The client challenged the

team to design a space that reflected their

cutting edge technology, incorporated

dynamic media elements, and boldly

expressed design in 3-dimensions.

The two-floor space includes an intercon-

necting stair that leads from the second floor

collaboration hub known as ‘Times Square’

down to a screening room where the client

showcases their latest technology. The space

was designed with a combination of open

ceiling and finished areas that serve to

define the design and delineate private /

public spaces. The team used a variety of

materials and textures to express the

dimensional aesthetic; wood, glass, metal,

acoustic felt, polished concrete, and a

twisted stainless steel sculpture suspended

over the stair.

A coup for the project was getting an LED

color changing exterior building top sign -

the first in Beverly Hills.

When looking to relocate their Chicago

headquarters and consolidate Southern

California operations, Playboy turned to the

Wolcott design team. The iconic global adult

entertainment and lifestyle media company

selected a 38,000 square foot two-story

space in the former Hilton Hotel headquar-

ters building in Beverly Hills.

The design team collaborated with the client

to transform the space into an environment

characterized as a modern translation with a

vintage quality, harkening back to Playboy’s

sexy and sophisticated roots. The space was

accented with numerous pieces of classic

furniture in the common areas, with environ-

mental graphics further reinforcing the rich

history and enhancing the Playboy brand.

A focal point of the interior design is a

curving interconnecting stair rising from the

lobby to the second floor conference and

collaboration areas. The free standing design

is reminiscent of feature stairs in Playboy

Clubs of the 1960’s.

The innovative and highly successful real

estate developer, Caruso Affiliated

Holdings, looked to establish a needed

headquarters facility that exemplified its

image and unique personality. The client

decided to locate the offices in 35,000

square feet at its flagship retail property,

The Grove in Los Angeles.

Wolcott’s team created an impressive plan

that reflected the company’s image of

sophistication and status. The traditional

style included details such as coffered

ceilings, rich wood details, and bold scale.

The overall plan has a residential and

hospitality aesthetic, which helps introduce

comfort and manageability to the expansive

floor plates.

Building on an existing relationship with

DirecTV, the broadcast satellite provider

headquartered in El Segundo, CA, Wolcott

was engaged to design their new West

Virginia Call Center. The 90,000 square foot

facility houses some 500 employees and

handles DirecTV’s mid-Atlantic operations.

The building infrastructure was completely

upgraded to satisfy the power and air

conditioning requirements. The WAI team

tackled the formidable challenge of the large

floor plate by designing the space to incorpo-

rate a regional theme keying on elements of

the rural landscape.

The project incorporates an ample amount of

glass in the lobby to increase visibility at the

entrance as well as creating a connection

between interior and exterior space. The

reception area also includes monitors to

showcase content. Graphics continue through

the space to reinforce the brand.

Furthering the landscape aesthetic, the rich

color palette of greens and blues echo the

areas rivers and mountains, although intensi-

fied to neon hues that energize the overall

environment. Neutral browns and blacks

representing the coal and rock formations

were used in higher traffic areas.

The Recording Academy is to the Grammy’s

what the Motion Picture Academy is to the

Oscars. This distinguished organization

realized a move was necessary in order to

accomplish expansion plans related to their

strategic vision.

Wolcott was commissioned to design the

interiors of the new 3-story, 66,000 square

foot space in the Lantana East Develop-

ment. Strategic goals and objectives for the

organization influenced the plan and

directed the design to reflect the history

and tenure of the organization as well as

acknowledging the future of new media.

The office features a 2-story lobby with a

water wall element and an integrated

display chronicling the history of recording.

The LEED Gold facility accommodates

executive and administrative offices,

enveloped in an aesthetic infused with

iconic images that pay tribute to the

recording industry.

Located just down-slope from the imposing

Getty Center in Brentwood, Wolcott’s design

team dramatically transformed a former

Holiday Inn into a visually distinctive high-

end boutique hospitality property.

The new identity that was established for the

Angelino was enhanced by convincing the

client to gut 8,000 square feet of the hotel’s

ground floor. In the newly opened area,

Wolcott designers created spaces for a large

open lobby, a cafe/bar, a plug-and-play

office for guests, an entry to the pool, and a

reconfigured main entry from the porte-

cochere.

To ensure efficient project management

under a tight budget and schedule, Wolcott

carefully coordinated the contributions of

multiple consultants combining meeting with

progress tracking that provided a catalyst for

strong communication, and ultimately a

successful project.

Karl Storz Endoscopy selected Wolcott to

design the interiors for their new North

American headquarters. The 95,000 square

foot, 3-floor space contains executive

offices, conferencing, administrative and

sales functions and includes a mock

operatory to showcase their medical

equipment and its functions.

The German based firm influenced the

design to be functional with elements that

integrated the legacy and legitimacy of the

firm. The Wolcott team designed a monu-

mental glass stair that features an image

based history of the company through the

use of applied graphics, developed by

Wolcott’s in-house graphic design group -

SKN Creative.

The infusion of this graphic history serves to

instill employee loyalty and organizational

pride as well as provide talking points for

visitors and potential end users of the

medical devices.

Live Nation Entertainment

Anchoring the west end of the Hollywood

redevelopment area, home to the Hollywood

and Highland retail complex and home of

the Academy Awards, Live Nation chose to

occupy a signature tower at 7060 Holly-

wood Boulevard. The former medical office

building was given a complete ‘facelift’.

The fully demolished floors were redesigned

by the WAI team to maximize views of the

Hollywood Hills to the north and LA city to

the south. The extensive use of glass fronts

on the offices serves to maximize natural

light. The design team incorporated

graphics to express the client’s business and

energize the rather contemporary aesthetic.

Film was applied to the glass office fronts for

semi-privacy; the image being a bar code

that spells ‘Live Nation’.

Careful planning with consultants helped

organize the mechanical systems and

maintain openness within the limited 10’-6’’

ceiling height.

Koi

Located at the heart of the Las Vegas Strip,

Wolcott & Koi Design Group transformed

an old restaurant into an exotic and spiritual

dining destination in the newly opened

Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino. The

10,000 square foot Japanese restaurant

beckons diners with a signature entrance of

See-Hear-Speak no evil Buddhas.

The lounge is surrounded by a forest of

orchids and Tibetan prayer wheels. The

significant design challenge was to create

an open pre-dining environment that would

transform into a private VIP Ultra Lounge

for afterhours events. The themed design

continues to the main dining room with a

mixture of free standing tables, sushi-bar

seating, and private booths.

The premier dining experience is in the

Fountain Lounge with 14 tables offering

unobstructed views of the Bellagio

fountains. As each area offers a unique

experience, the fish-net ceilings cover the

space bringing the Asian design out onto

the Las Vegas street.

Renowned executive placement firm, Korn

Ferry International, partnered with Wolcott

to create a comprehensive environment for

their new 40,000 square foot headquarters

in Los Angeles.

Using the urban high-rise views as a focus,

Wolcott’s design team organized the

reception and conference area to formally

address the window line. Utilizing a

palette of subtle but elegant materials and

finished Wolcott was able to deliver a

sophisticated contemporary style with a

dramatic scale reflective of the firm’s high

level business clients.

LA Center Studios is an ambitious undertak-

ing that attracts film production companies

and their related support service businesses

to downtown Los Angeles. Rather than

locate in the one of the Westside or Burbank

media districts, LA Center Studios decided to

develop a production complex using the

former Unocal headquarters as the center

piece.

Wolcott focused their efforts on the base

building and public areas that would be used

to attract the discerning creative business

entities. When Film LA Inc. needed a modern

and edgy build-out of the 20,000 square feet

of raw space for its headquarters in the LA

Center Studios complex, they selected the

Wolcott team to realize their design vision.

The unique rhombus shaped space served as

an inspiration to Wolcott’s designers, who

created an innovative plan that expressed Film

LA’s personality. Within a modest budget,

Wolcott found unique solutions through the

use of the saw-tooth wall line, glass, open

black-painted ceilings, polished concrete

floors and bright colors, along with custom

millwork and furniture.

‘Employee First’ was the mantra guiding the

design for the headquarters of LegalZoom,

a web based legal services provider. The

Wolcott team re-envisioned two-floors of

an existing space to create a completely

open plan, recapturing formerly private

spaces for collaboration areas and a large

company lounge with stunning views of the

San Gabriel Mountains.

The space is infused with vibrant color to

reflect the client’s zest for business,

combined with finish selections that

emphasize sustainability, longevity and

simplicity. The design was also guided by

feng shui principles for plan orientation and

architectural massing. As a result, walls and

ceilings were rounded or split to avoid

‘dead’ corners to enhance energy flow and

celebrate the functional components of the

base building.

The incorporation of an interconnecting

stair provides a draw for the employees and

further reinforces the equal importance of

the individual floors.

The Bank of New York Mellon

For Mellon Bank, the Wolcott designers

needed to find a way to create a simple

contemporary design for Mellon’s 27th

floor office space within a fairly limited

budget.

Wolcott accomplished this by using the

richest materials in the more public spaces,

namely the reception area and conference

room.

Ceiling elements and crisp finishes create an

inviting and impressive space that is innately

fuctional while also maximizing the impact

of the Downtown view. Cost effective

materials were used in the back of house

areas, but with visionary application, the

design team achieved a consistent aesthetic

throughout the space.

Pancreatic Cancer Action Network

Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCan)

enlisted the services of Wolcott to design

their new Los Angeles office space. The

national non-profit envisioned a space that

incorporated transparency while exhibiting

sustainability and longevity, which are

guiding principles for the organization. An

inspiring wall of light and graphics immedi-

ately greet a visitor with the mission

statement etched onto glass panels.

The reception areas quickly dissolves into a

series of common areas called “Main Street’

that includes meeting rooms, a Shop Purple

store and a multi-purpose training room.

Super graphics were used for way-finding,

identification and inspiration.

Views and natural light were incorporated

into the design through the use of glass at

the perimeter offices to activate the interior.

The ceilings were left open to represent

functionality and a thing of beauty not to

be covered up.

Sundance Institute, founded in 1981,

incubated, developed and grew into a

legitimate and respected organization. As the

institute expanded and matured, it was able

to better define its mission and culture, which

was not reflected in the existing space. The

new design objective was to consolidate onto

one floor, and provide an open and collabora-

tive plan rather than express the typical

entertainment model.

The new 14,000 square foot space supported

an open and transparent design aesthetic that

maximized day lighting and views. As an

internationally recognized nonprofit organiza-

tion working with independent artists, it was

important to design a space that reflected

their mission “to discover and develop

independent artists and audiences across the

globe.”

The space was developed with a simplified a

traditional style, that also reflects the

aesthetic of an energizing and creative

environment. This goal was further translated

through graphics of inspirational quotes and

imagery throughout the space.

Wolcott was selected to develop an innova-

tive and creative environment for the offices

of Principato Young Entertainment (PYE). A

cutting-edge comedy talent production

entity, PYE is known for delivering TV, film

and other media productions representative

of comedy’s next generation. WAI was

committed to delivering the same level of

cutting-edge design for the new space.

The WAI team collaborated with the client to

design a space that was organic and had a

curvilinear flow to take advantage of and

respond to existing building architecture.

Working with PYE, the selected color pallete

and finish patterning was derivative of a

design aesthetic that reflected mid-century

eclecticism. The eclecticism was further

reinforced by the integration of contrast in

finish textures of various woods, stains,

furniture, and artwork.

The patterning in the carpet for the main

conference rooms was inspired by the

vintage movie “Houses in Hollywood.” Glass

was incorporated into the design to promote

an “active” office, increase transparency and

openness to encourage collaboration.

One of LA’s oldest companies, Vulcan

Materials, selected Wolcott to design their

new headquarters space at 500 N. Brand in

Glendale. The new 2-floor space contains the

firm’s executive offices, largely open plan

work areas, and a training facility. The design

team was inspired by the chance to realize

the new vision for a company steeped in Los

Angeles history. Starting with a rather neutral

palette that is reminiscent of the aggregates

the firm provides for building materials, the

team accented the space with imagery of

iconic Los Angeles projects.

A history wall informs employees and visitors

along a major corridor, a section of the

Hollywood Bowl graces a wall in 5th floor

reception, while the ‘LAX theme building’

dominates the employee lunch room. Actual

‘Vulcan Materials’ such as tiered concrete

panels, were used in the reception area,

aggregate was ‘faux’ embed in a hallway

floor, and the existing concrete floor was

sealed.

Wolcott created a comfortable and functional

office environment for REELZ, a Los Angeles

based cable television network. Working

within an ambitious 12 week schedule and a

limited budget, the Wolcott team proved that

they could rapidly deliver a cost effective and

engaging environment.

Particularly challenging was simultaneously

completing not only office space but a full

video production facility. The inventive use of

color and finishes complemented the distinct

architecture of the building to establish a

relaxed, playful feeling that inspires creativity

to the employees who often work long hours.

A cafe counter was centrally positioned to

encourage impromptu gatherings for brain-

storming, and the iconic use of the company’s

logo in the elevator lobby established the

young company’s branding for anyone

entering the space.

Toni & Guy

Dallas based Toni & Guy Hairdressing

Academy, chose the Wolcott design team

to realize their vision for the company’s

west coast flagship hair academy. The

10,000 square foot store front in Santa

Monica was developed to emphasize the

power of their brand with a strong street

presence.

The interiors were designed to provide an

open, inviting and modern aesthetic. A

minimalist and somewhat austere palette

was felt to best accommodate the client

whose business continues to evolve both

commercially and artistically.

The salon space includes a retail component

as well as three classrooms that can be

combined for large seminars and public use.

The design team successfully designed the

space to not only achieve but reinforce the

client’s ‘catwalk-to-client’ philosophy.

Wolcott embraced the opportunity to

transform a locally unique space to accommo-

date the design studio and workshop facilities

for the automotive design teams of VW/Audi.

As the former Museum of Flying, the 50,000

square foot building provided opportunities

for a truly innovative and creative space.

Wolcott capitalized on the building’s distinct

structural characteristics: exposed steel

structure, existing three story atrium, ample

ceiling height, and a clerestory. After incorpo-

rating a building expansion, Wolcott

positioned the modeling facility on the

ground floor and used former hangar areas to

accommodate the various craft shops.

The second floor houses the designer work-

stations, the graphics rooms, as well as the

color and print departments. Public areas and

administrative rooms were placed on the third

floor including the main Conference Center

as well as team break areas and an employee

kitchen/pantry overlooking the two story

space.

International Cinematographers Guild (ICG)

Wolcott transformed a utilitarian radio

station structure with no distinct design

profile into a bold architectural statement

that reflects the creative posture of its

client, the International Cinematographers

Guild (ICG).

The 14,000 square foot project included a

an extensive interior upgrade and exterior

renovations resulting in a significant

redesign. Innovative interior and exterior

lighting gives the building an array of

dramatic looks through day and night.

The design established a contemporary

identity for the building, and its client, by

introducing new materials, textures and

palette colors to the area. The new facility

energizes the tenant space and the

streetscape. Subsequently, neighboring

buildings along Sunset Boulvard have been

undergoing renovation, clearly following

the vision initiated by the ICG architecture.

Watt Plaza

Commercial real estate developer Watt

Properties’ twin tower Watt Plaza in

Century City was originally completed in

1982. Motivated by the A-List entertain-

ment and financial services clientele moving

into neighboring buildings, Watt sought to

create an updated identity by rethinking the

building’s common areas, most notably the

lobby.

Wolcott implemented a striking new design

approach that provided Watt Plaza’s tenants

an identifiable and inviting entry with an

activated exterior plaza. Together, these

architectural design elements provided a

connection to communicate a modern

attitude and upgraded status.

The arrival sequence was also enhanced

with new parking structure graphics and

architectural modifications to the elevator

areas. The successful design aesthetic

received BOMA’s prestigious TOBY Award.

American Society of Cinematographers

The American Society of Cinematographers

(ASC) has called a century-old Mission-Style

California Bungalow its Hollywood home

base for 70 of its 90 years.

The exterior of the Clubhouse – as it is

known to members – retained its gracious

early twentieth century veranda and inviting

front door. The interiors, however, had

started to show well-worn signs of age. In

this context, the ASC came to Wolcott

Architecture | Interiors (WAI) to realizing its

vision and restore this grande dame of a

structure to its former grandeur.

While only a few grainy black-and-white

photos bear witness to the Clubhouse’s

glory days, conversations with long-time

members and archival research supplied the

Wolcott team the information necessary to

create a tasteful, balanced, and respectful

interpretation for reconstruction of this

historic home.

The high-tech supplier WebSense (formerly

Phasemetrics) turned to Wolcott to imple-

ment an expansion plan to accommodate

ambitious employee growth from 40 to

800. The expansion involved multi-location

facilities that included a total of 300,000

square feet of administrative space, R&D

laboratories and manufacturing both in San

Diego and Fremont, California.

For the new headquarters' exterior, Wolcott

envisioned dynamic rectilinear elements that

combine to create an energetic contempo-

rary structure. The existing simple box-like

structure was opened, punctuated, and

articulated to accommodate an impressive

new lobby.

An employee cafeteria with an outdoor

patio was added to maximize exterior views

and natural light. Dramatic lighting empha-

sizes the architecture in the evening hours.

West Hills Corporate Pointe

The original food service facility on the

Corporate Pointe campus was found to be

under-utilized, uninviting and inefficient.

The developer engaged Wolcott to

completely re-envision the facility. The once

non-descript concrete structure was

transformed into a virtual jewel box by the

WAI design team.

The owner preferred to maintain the basic

footprint to minimize entitlement issues and

expedite the renovation process. The WAI

team took a blank slate approach that

began with visioning. Once a new program

was approved, the design evolved to

include a new space plan with architectural

modifications that realigned the entrance

and enhanced resort-like outdoor dining.

The completed 12,000 square foot LEED

Gold Certified building now serves as a

focal point, anchoring the business park

and retail center as well as serving to cater

special functions and support the adjacent

auditorium.
