Home Composition
In Chile, 40% of all families are not headed by a married man and woman. In many poor areas of the country, single women often bring up their children on their own.
The proportion of women head of household is higher in urban than in rural zones, 38% vs. 30%
In urban areas where women are head of household, 40% of households have 3-4 people
Shopping Composition
Product coverage*In-car consumer electronics (aftermarket); In-home consumer electronics; Portable consumer electronics
Consumer electronics sales grew for the fifth consecutive year in 2006.
Department stores accounted for the largest share of consumer electronics distribution throughout the review period, but managed to increase their lead through the development of consumer credit facilities that other distribution channels were unable to match.
It is likely to see continued new product development and further growth for digital and portable products.

Women earned 19% less than men in 2003, according to a government survey; the gap was nearly 40% in jobs requiring high levels of education.
In 1975, Chilean women were only 1.4 per cent of graduating engineers, while in 2000 they were over 15 per cent in business schools the situation is still more dramatic: they have gone from 13.5 per cent in 1975 to over 50 per cent today
The Competition
According to Carmina of Santiago Chile, “competitors [of Best Buy] in Chile would be the department stores: Falabella, Almacenes Paris, Ripley. In that order.”
Women in Management Continued
Women executives are more likely than men executives to have made important life decisions in order to manage both their careers and their personal lives: 18 per cent of women vs. 9 per cent of men have delayed marriage, and 3 per cent of women vs. 1 per cent of men have decided not to marry
Women head of family earns on average 66.4 per cent of the salary of men. The salary gap is much larger for executive women. The top 20 per cent earners have only 60.6 per cent of the salary of their men counterparts
Women in Management Continued
48% of women consider that “Achieving a proper balance between work and family” is the most important family issue
43% of men thinks that “Being a good mother and the concern for the family are more important than self development in the job” is what should receive the utmost attention
Verbatim Comments
Carmina from Santiago, Chile says, “Chile is a much better place than Venezuela right now. I'd say it's the best country in South America to live in.” When asked about where she likes better, Santiago, Chile or her home town of Caracas, Venuzuela
“There’s quite a few small electronic stores that really suck and are quite expensive,” says Jered, an Professional Spanish to English Translator living in Vina Del Mar, Chile, “too bad there’s nothing like a Best Buy here.” Jered grew up in Independence, Oregon.
The Out Come
Through looking at literary sources and by talking to natives we can see that the “Big Box” department store concept is flourishing much better than the “mom and pop” type of stores.
The people of Chile have a need for affordable electronics and want a wide selection
From this research we can see it would be beneficial to further research in building a Best Buy in Chile, especially the capital city of Santiago
