With his work on stage at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre, his band The Old Lumps, and with his popular blog Dealbreaker about to become a book, Los Angeles based comedian Dave Horwitz deserves the title of Renaissance Man.
You’re originally from Massachusetts. Did you move to Los Angeles specifically to pursue comedy?
Yes and no. I graduated from Emerson
College with a film degree. I had, during my time at school, realized that while I did genuinely love film I preferred writing and performing to anything technical. Shortly after graduating, I got an amazing, too good to be true job working in Manhattan on Oliver Stone’s (horrible) film World Trade Center. Well, like most things that seem too good to
be true, the job fell through. So, with no plans, no job prospects, and no real direction, I took a friend up on an offer to move to LA with him. I figured, I love comedy and movies and they make those things in LA, so why not?
How and when did you become involved
with the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre? What are some of your favorite shows that you’ve been apart of?
I started going to see shows at UCB the
week I moved to LA. I remember the first show I went to was ASSSSCAT, and Patton Oswalt was in it. It was oversold, so I had to sit off to the side of the stage. When he wasn’t performing, he sat right next to me. That was enough to hook my nerdy self for good.
