Principal’s Message
It is hard to believe December is here! I would like to
take this opportunity to wish everyone a wonderful
Holiday Season.
Please take time to relax and spend valuable time
with family and friends. Make it a personal goal to
help create a special memory for someone else acts of
kindness are unforgettable!
In January we will be making an effort to reduce the
weight of backpacks. Did you know that it is
recommended that a backpack weigh no more than
10%-15% of the student’s weight? Many of the
students grade P-8 are carrying backpacks which
exceed this safe weight. Over the break it is a great
time to talk about cleaning out the backpacks and
encourages students to only carry what they need.
Remember students have storage (either lockers or
shelves) here at school.
We would like to welcome Jennifer LeBlanc who is
working as a playground supervisor at noon time. On
Dec 21st Tina Dale will be retiring from her position
as our Learning Center/Resource teacher. Tina has
been a positive hard working member of our school
staff for many years. Tina’s commitment to student
success is amazing and we will miss her smile,
encouragements and insight. Christy Wilson will be
assuming Tina’s role from January – June. We
welcome Christy to our school team.
Best wishes for a safe and happy holiday season and a
wish for good health and happiness in the New Year.

How does AVRCE share “snow day” school
cancellation information?
Winter weather is here, so it’s important to be ready for
possible school cancellations due to weather or road
conditions. You can prepare by having a back-up plan
in place for these events, and making sure your contact
information is up-to-date with your child’s school in
order to receive automatic text/email cancellation
notices through the PowerSchool Alert system.
AVRCE also runs a system called NotifyMe, so
grandparents, childcare providers and other school
community members can sign up to receive school
cancellation texts/emails. Parents/guardians do not need
to sign up for NotifyMe.
*Please note, AVRCE will be refreshing the NotifyMe
subscription list to reduce duplicate messages and to
make sure parents/guardians are receiving important
notices only through PowerSchool Alerts. Other school
community members who have signed up to NotifyMe
will continue to receive notices and will not be affected
by this refresh.
School cancellations are also announced via:
- Twitter @AVRCE_NS
- AVRCE phone line, 902.538.4600 or
1.800.850.3887
- Local media: AVR network, Magic 94.9, CBC
Radio 1 Halifax, CTV Morning Live Atlantic)
What does “bus driver discretion” mean?
When AVRCE announces “bus driver discretion,” this
means that road conditions are generally good, but
some roads may be unplowed or slippery. A school bus
driver may choose not to travel these roads if they think
it isn’t safe to do so. When this happens, the school is
notified and will try to contact families on the affected
road(s). If a bus doesn’t travel a particular road before
school, it will not travel that road after school.

decisions are made, visit
