Why diversity matters – a message from Vittorio Colao

At Vodafone we recognise the importance of gender diversity and the fact that women, both as our customers and employees, are one of the keys to our successes in the future.

In Vodafone’s latest annual report I emphasised our commitment to women, how we are addressing the gender gap in mobile phone ownership in emerging economies, and the social and economic impact of extending women’s access to mobile phones.

The Connected Women report found that stabilising the gender gap in our markets could have an economic benefit for women and society of more than US$22.3 billion annually from 2020.

I have also set a goal of increasing female representation throughout the company, particularly within the senior leadership teams and in other key leadership and management positions.

We are making good progress in this area, and I am excited by this initiative to highlight and recognise the skills and expertise of women within Vodafone.

Women in Red is an excellent initiative that will showcase some of our female workforce who have been nominated by their colleagues as ‘inspiring’ individuals.

I hope that it will provide a platform for them to pass on their tips to others around them and highlight the key value and outstanding contribution that our female employees are bringing to the company, around the World.

I look forward to seeing Women in Red develop and continuing to reflect the expertise, talent and increasing value those women are bringing to Vodafone.

Vittorio Colao Chief Executive, Vodafone Group

Introduction

Throughout my career I have had the opportunity to meet, and to work with, women who seem to manage a successful career, sometimes married and bringing up children, or simply balancing the demands of a hectic personal life.

I took their inspiration and applied many of their principles to my own life, and somehow found ways to get this balance right. I can now reflect and be proud of what I have achieved.

My children are now old enough to fend for themselves, ‘on track’ and ‘doing well’, so I have time to see how I can help others to find that balance.

The initiative to create Women in Red is my simple offering to women in business to see how we can help them find inspiration and guidance, by benefitting from the journeys of some of our successful and inspirational women, sharing their knowledge and their top tips.

This first publication is a pilot, accelerated somewhat from my original timeline, so we could launch on international Women’s Day on the 8th March. The result is a showcase of 32 women in Vodafone who have been nominated as ‘inspiring’.

I started within my own network and selected four people around me who I admired and who had inspired me and many around them.

I then asked them to nominate two more and so we organically grew to reach our initial group.

Many of you will ask ‘what is the definition of inspiring?’ Well, from my perspective this is clear and, whilst there are many definitions that could be applied, for Women in Red I have taken a broad view.

Inspiring may mean that the individual has managed a successful career and a family; they may have raised money for charity; they seem to manage multiple activities within their business role, but at the same time they manage their work-life balance; they may have undertaken some exceptionally brave and courageous activities in their personal life that have given them a strength of character that others admire; and they have done this all with a smile and a positive approach to life!

Within this booklet I have attempted to capture some of the reasons why individuals have been nominated, and that is not for us to contest or debate, but for us to embrace.

If the Women in Red pilot is a success, my vision is to pass this initiative over to the Women’s Network and we will then, hopefully, see this managed by an online voting tool, resulting in an annual publication of 50 of Vodafone’s most inspiring women, around the globe.

In this way, we can then recognise, showcase, and celebrate the growing influence of women in our business, at all levels over the coming years.

I hope the legacy will be to show everybody what is possible. This collection of advice will, I hope, help the readers (both men and women) map their own journey with more speed, less complexity and, most importantly, be able to create a network of trust and collaboration with their fellow colleagues.

Happy reading and thanks to all who participated in making this happen and special thanks to Margaret I’ons for her effort in designing this booklet.

Jane Brownsord Global Bid Manager, Sales & Commercial Operations Vodafone Group

Nominated for her commitment to customers

Jane joined Vodafone in September 2012 as a proposal writer (on contract for maternity cover). She quickly stepped into bid management, initially through a job share role before transferring to full time.

After an early career in book publishing, public relations and marketing, Jane became a partner in a graphic design business which she developed into a successful B2B full-service agency.

Jane then moved back into PR working for Achilles Group as their Global PR and Brand Manager.

Bid Management benefits from Jane’s strong communications skills, both internally with the bid team and through stakeholder engagement, and importantly through articulation of the value proposition to the customer.

Jane was recently recognised by one of our customers who said they chose to stay with Vodafone because of their engagement with Jane.

Jane is married with three children (Eliza 15, Luke 13 and Gabby 10).

Jane’s top tips Ask questions and really listen – stay

Help people without the expectation of anything in return. Be generous with your skills and knowledge. It reinforces and strengthens your skills and feels good in the process.

Adopt a mentor – find somebody whom you respect and have an affinity with. It’s great to have a sounding board, to safely road-test ideas and to be challenged to look at your behaviour differently.
