The most significant project of the Women’s Annex Foundation has been the building of

eleven Internet classrooms in high schools in Herat, Afghanistan. Known as The Afghan

Development Project, the original goal was to connect 40 schools in Herat, and

160,000 Afghan children to as many or more schools in Europe and USA. Social

Media will give a face and voice to the future of Afghanistan, Europe, USA, and the rest of

the World. Today that goal has been extended to 1,000 schools and millions of students in Central and Southern Asia.

“Though women’s rights in Afghanistan have improved since the fall of the repressive Taliban

regime 12 years ago, many Afghans still believe that a woman should work only in the home,

caring for her family. Technology entrepreneur Roya Mahboob is working in clever new ways to

change this continuing cultural stereotype. Mahboob’s Afghan Citadel Software Co., an IT consulting

firm founded in 2010, employs 25 people, 18 of whom are women. Her employees develop soft-

ware and databases for private companies, government ministries and NATO. To make these jobs

more accessible to Afghan women, five of the employees are able to work from home.

Mahboob’s plans are even more ambitious. Most public access to the Internet in Afghanistan is

restricted to urban Internet cafés, which are often uncomfortable or unsafe places for women.

That doesn’t work for Mahboob — so she is building 40 free Internet-enabled classrooms across

Afghanistan to allow more than 160,000 female students to connect to the world. She also founded

a multilingual blog and video site to give these women a platform for telling their stories. Nearly

300 female student bloggers have posted on the site, making themselves heard and changing the

way the world sees Afghanistan … and how Afghan girls and women see themselves.”

Women’s Annex encourages women all over the world including developing countries such as Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan to be financially independent self-starters.

THE AFGHAN DEVELOPMENT PROJECT

Roya Mahboob and Fereshteh Forough, started the Afghan Development Project in March 2012. With the financial support of Film Annex and Francesco Rulli, eleven Internet classrooms have been built in high schools in Herat, Afghanistan as of June 2013, and the goal is to build forty

Internet classrooms in high schools. Social Media is the first step to connect forty schools and 160,000 Afghan children to as many or more schools in Europe and the United States. Social Media will give a face and voice to the women and children of South and Central Asia. Women’s Annex provides training in social media for 5000 female students in the eleven existing public schools today via Examer. Schools in Herat, Afghanistan include:

EXAMER SOFTWARE

Examer is a vocational and educational online software that connects students to the business world of Social and Digital media, and it allows students to:

• Use Social Media platforms such as Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter, • To take academic tests, • To do their homework, and • To publish essays, films, and blogs online.

Examer has 5,000 Afghan women on the platform as of May 2013, and we are expanding to Azerbaijan, Sri Lanka, various countries in Africa, and the Caribbean.

Examer’s Content Creator – Examer has a “Content Creator” where students can quote and re-purpose content from existing Social Media networks to create their own original content. Training and education is our first priority. Students from developing countries like Afghanistan learn how to produce content such as articles, film treatments, scripts, films and more. They also learn how to promote their content online and simultaneously generate revenues.

The highest achieving students are paid and/or win educational scholarships. The Micro Scholarship Payment System is tailored to the needs of regional languages and cultures. Three exceptional Afghan women, Elaha Mahboob, Roya Mahboob, and Fereshteh Forough originally developed Examer for the education of Afghan children. Today, Examer is being o!ered license free to women and children around the globe.
