Modern women in media
In the media(magazines, adverts) today, women are shown to be as:• Slim• Young • Mostly white• Confirmative with are ideas of
beauty (such as prefect skin, hair)
• Sex objects
The male gaze The “gaze” is basically the way that the audience views the people represented; which can be seen in three ways:-
• How men look at women• How women view other women• How women view themselves
Laura believes that films are structured around the view of heterosexual man. This means that with most films, women are seen as a prize or sex object for the protagonist shown through the over sexualisation of women from things like “gazing” at a woman’s physical appearance such as linger over the curves of a woman's body. Meaning women have to experience the narrative
Criticisms of the male gaze
Although for some people that dislike the way women are presented in media, there are some that believe that it is empowering to express your looks such as beauty pageants.
Another point is that the gaze can be directed at those of the same gender however not sexuality, such as body image and clothes.
