Spring break arrives at the end of this week and we are certain that many of our students and families are looking forward to a break from the routine of school! It has been an exceptionally busy and exciting time in and around Poppy over the past few weeks with many school events and a number of group and individual success stories! Last week, our D.W. Poppy Players showcased their musical and dramatic talents in our school production of Roald Dahl’s Will y Wonka. As well, last Thursday, the Poppy Rugby Program once again hosted the Langley 7’s Rugby Tournament for the third year in a row. You can read more about these successful events below in the Redhawk Release. We have also had a number of individual students achieve great success at both the B.C. High School Wrestling Championships and the recently completed B.C. Winter Games. We also sent a team of Physics students to the UBC Physics Olympics this past weekend and had three Poppy art students have their work showcased at the West Fine Arts Show held this past weekend at Yorkson Middle School. This week, we have a team of dedicated students from the Poppy Robotics Club heading to Victoria to compete in a regional Robotics Competition featuring teams from all over the west coast of North America. And lastly, a group of 38 Poppy students will be spending their spring break travelling Europe with Mr. Tener, Ms. Tener, and Ms. Molina. This group will be leaving on Wednesday and spending most of spring break in Europe being exposed to history, culture, architecture and more. Last week also was Interim Reporting Week at Poppy as we have reached the halfway point of semester 2. Students should have brought home interim reports from all of their semester 2 classes. While not all interim reports will show an actual percentage or mark at this early juncture in the semester, they should provide students and parents a sense of how their child is progressing in each course. Our second set of Parent-Teacher Interviews arrives this coming week, so if parents have any questions or concerns about their child’s progress, we would suggest making an appointment to meet with your child’s teachers on Wednesday evening. Appointments can be made up until midnight on Tuesday, March 13. Please see below in the newsletter for details on how to book your appointments. We hope that all of our Poppy students and their families have a wonderful spring break! Whether you are travelling somewhere or simply having a stay-cation, relax, rest up and recharge! Willy Wonka – A Smashing Success!!

Congratulations to Mr. Howard, Mr. Ablitt, Mr. Loewen, and all of the Musical Theatre students involved in this year’s D.W. Poppy Players production of Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka! The show had an excellent run last week with large crowds every night and closed with a final performance on Saturday evening! If you didn’t get a chance to see the show, you missed great performances by all of our students under Mr. Howard’s direction, an exceptional pit orchestra under the direction of Mr. Ablitt, and fantastic props and sets produced by Mr. Loewen and his Stagecraft students! Special thanks to all the Poppy parents who contributed many hours behind the scenes in fundraising, promotions, box office and concession! On Friday evening, Hannah Bauer (Acting) and Shauna Rexworthy (Technical) were also awarded the Mike Roberds Memorial Scholarship for their outstanding contributions to the Musical Theatre Program at Poppy over the past five years! Congratulations to Hannah and Shauna along with the other graduating seniors who were acknowledged at the conclusion of Saturday evenings show!

Poppy Wrestlers Shine at the Provincial Championships!

Last weekend, four Poppy Wrestlers joined six other wrestlers from schools across Langley as part of the Langley United Wrestling Team that competed in the B.C. Championships in Port Alberni! While the wrestlers train together as part of Langley United Wrestling, at the Provincials, these wrestlers are representing D.W. Poppy and once again, they did not disappoint! Congratulations to Prit Paul Johal, who won the gold medal in the 57kg weight class and was also named the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament! Congratulations are also in order for Parmjot Sidhu, who came second in the 54kg weight class and captured the silver medal. The third member of the Poppy Boys team was Tanner Mueller, who came 7th in the 70kg division. Together, these three boys earned enough points to place D.W. Poppy in 9th place overall in B.C. at the Senior Boys level. Our lone female wrester was Ella Jimenez, who placed 7th overall in the 60kg division! Congratulations to all four of these amazing student athletes and many thanks to Ms. Florko who accompanied the wrestlers as the team chaperone! Prit Paul and Parmjot will also be recognized by the Langley School District prior to the April 10 Board Meeting. You can read more about their accomplishments and Prit Paul’s amazing journey from an unwilling participant to 3 provincial titles in this article from the Langley Times: http://bit.ly/2ts650b

Langley Rugby 7 Tournament

Last Thursday, March 8, the D.W. Poppy Rugby Program hosted the third annual Langley Rugby 7’s Tournament featuring Rugby 7’s teams from all over the Lower Mainland! The tournament ran all day on the backfield and despite another year of rainy weather, the event was a great success! We had a food concession, music, great crowd support, as well as visits from some Rugby Canada players in town for the Vancouver Rugby 7’s tournament! The rain did not dampen the spirit and enthusiasm of our student body who braved the elements to watch the games, or our teams, who had a dominant day on the field. Here are the results:

• Gr. 8 Girls finished second on the day, losing narrowly to Yorkson Creek in the final.

• Gr. 8 Boys won the day and took home the Jim Booth Shield after a very exciting sudden-death overtime win in the final over Stafford.

• Jr. Girls finished second as well, just missing out in the final to RE Mountain

• Jr. Boys finished first overall, winning the shield over LSS in the final

• Sr. Boys won a thrilling semi-final in overtime, but ran out of gas in the final, finishing second to RE Mountain

• And the Sr. Girls rounded out our shield winners, taking home the Frank Ellestad/David Melke shield with a victory over RE Mountain

Many thanks to Mr. Barry and Mr. Crowley for organizing and hosting this great event!

Redhawks Shine at B.C. Winter Games

A couple of D.W. Poppy students brought home some hardware from the recent B.C. Winter Games that were held in Kamloops! Willow Burgess, in grade 8, captured the Gold Medal in Judo while representing Zone 3 – Fraser Valley! And Sarah Butt, in grade 9, captured three medals in Springboard Diving! Sarah won the bronze medal in both the 1 metre and 3 metre springboard events and took home the silver medal in synchronized diving! Congratulations to both girls on these impressive accomplishments! If there are other Poppy students who took part in the Games, please let the school know! We would love to brag about their accomplishments!

Grade 8 Trades Field Trip to UFV Chilliwack

On March 1, a bus full of Poppy grade 8 students travelled to UFV Chilliwack to watch the Skills Canada Competition and also learn about the many different types of post secondary and career opportunities that exist in the trades. Students were able to watch the students competing in the various Skills Canada competitions but also had a chance to experience many of the hands-on activities and demos that were on display throughout the venue. This event was a great way to expose our grade 8 students to the many different fields of work that exist in the trades and our students came back with a greater sense of the many opportunities that exist out there for them! Many thanks to our Career Advisor, Ms. Czuprynski, for organizing the field trip. If students or parents want to learn more about the career opportunities available for students in any field, they are both welcome to book an appointment with Ms. Czuprynski through the main office.

UBC Physics Olympics

On Saturday, Mr. Furse took a group of his Physics students to UBC to compete in the annual UBC Physics Olympics competition with approximately 80 other schools from around the province! While the team didn’t win, they had a great deal of fun, lots of laughs and a great tour of the campus, The day also got the students talking more about physics and possible futures in engineering, and the grade 11’s who participated are already thinking about plans for next year! Thanks to Mr. Furse for giving up his Saturday to accompany the students!

This is the projectile launcher. Epic funny failure. Equipment failure caused the projectile to pop out and fly an astounding 13 cm (not the original plan). That's the failure part. However, since it went through the hoop, it actually scored better than many other teams. Anyone watching was busting a gut laughing when it happened.

In case you were wondering, everyone looks bored as they are waiting out the spinning top to see how long it sounds for! The top spinning on the table went for a little over two minutes which was a decent score.

West Fine Art Show

Also taking place this weekend was the West Fine Art Show, held at Yorkson Creek Middle School! The show featured art from 23 Canadian Artists and their work was exceptional and impressive! In addition, students from across Langley had a chance to have their art on display as well. Students submitted their artwork to David Sandquist and he chose three pieces that were displayed throughout the weekend. D.W. Poppy students represented at the show were Sierra Foulds, Jaden Senger, and Jappreet Gill!

Youth Ambassadors Program

Applications for the Youth Ambassadors Program with Canada, a three-week summer exchange program in the United States for highly motivated students and responsible adult mentors, are now open. The Youth Ambassadors Program with Canada brings together youth (aged 15 to 18 years old) and adult mentors from Canada to promote mutual understanding, increase leadership, and prepare youth to make a difference in their communities. It is an intensive program that takes place from July 16 through August 4, 2018, and is carried out in Ottawa, New York state, and Washington, DC. Participants have all travel, meal, and accommodation costs during the exchange covered by the program, in addition to health benefits with limitations provided in the USA. The Youth Ambassadors Program with Canada is organized by the Center for the Study of Canada, State University of New York College at Plattsburgh, with support from: the United States Department of State; World Learning, the United States Embassy in Ottawa; and Fulbright Canada. Program organizers employ content with a highly interactive approach through a range of workshops, meetings, and site visits, plus home stays with American families. Through direct engagement with leaders of community, public, and private entities, Youth Ambassadors will better understand civic participation and the rights and responsibilities of citizens in a democracy. Upon returning home, Youth Ambassadors will apply what they learned to implement community service projects that serve needs in their own communities, plus be engaged through mentoring and alumni network initiatives. The program is seeking applicants with Canadian citizenship. Youth applicants must be aged 15 to 18 years old, have at least 4 months remaining of secondary school or CEGEP (NO JUNE 2018 GRADS), and be dedicated to community service. Preference will be given to applicants from under-represented populations, new Canadians, and Canadians from indigenous populations including First Nations, Inuit, and Métis.

New this year: While the details of the program can still be found on the SUNY Plattsburgh webpage, the Youth Ambassadors Program with Canada application will now be received digitally through the World Learning application portal found here.
