BONDEX Wood Protection Guide

As a living material, wood blends perfectly into the natural environment and creates its very own atmosphere outdoors. From windows and summer cottages to pergolas, sandpits and fencing, wood provides endless possibilities for structure and design. You can benefi t from these advantages for a long time, if you treat your wood with care. Because wood as a natural material is exposed to natural decay, it requires the right protection in order to remain in good condition and maintain its appearance. Throughout Europe people rely on BONDEX for this – not only for optimum protection, but also for aesthetic purposes.

This wood protection guide should provide you with some useful basic principles of wood protection and help you fi nd the right BONDEX products to meet your specifi c needs. User tips included.

We hope you have a lot of fun and success, protecting and designing your wood.

Unprotected wood is exposed to many kinds of attacks, particularly outdoors.

• UV rays from sunlight create a washboard-effect on the surface structure and subsequently lead to a Greyish colour. The surface loses its rigidity. If the wood is not pre-treated, subsequent coatings are subject to fl aking.

• Rain, dew, condensation, etc. increase the moisture content; evaporation decreases it again. The result: cracks in the surface through which wood-destroying fungi can attack.

• Depending on the type of wood, a blue stain can form in the wood, a type of fungus that darkens the wood, destroys the fi nish and may cause rot.

Where protection is concerned, wood is not just wood.

• All types of wood are exposed to the wear resulting from UV rays and damp.

• Softwoods such as pine or spruce are susceptible to blue stain in wood.

• Hardwoods such as teak or oak are naturally immune from blue stain as a rule.

• Factory-made pre-impregnated softwoods have blue stain protection.

Structural protection of the wood provides the most important basis for protection. Examples are roof overhangs, water management by appropriate angling, recessed windows and generally avoiding permanent contact with water, e.g. at ground level. BONDEX builds on this to give wood the right protection in two treatments, which complement one another.

For all woods used externally:

BONDEX provides decorative design and physical surface protection against damp and UV rays, as well as blocking fungal spores. By using BONDEX wood protection you obtain a fi nish that is free from, or low in active substances.

Previously only for endangered soft woods:

In-depth protection of wood against blue stain fungus – by impreg-nation as a pre-treatment with chemical substances (biocides).

How to achieve an ideal base coat

To achieve the best effect when applying a coat, the surface must be dry, clean and free of dust, grease, oil, wax and salt. Typical contaminants such as algae, mould growth, bird droppings, cobwebs, etc. must be completely removed.

Important tasks:

• Remove impurities using an appropriate method, e.g. a scraper or wooden brush

• Use a scraper to remove hard spots (hardened areas); remove resin specks with cellulose thinners.

• Sand with grit 60-80 sandpaper (coarse), 100-120 (medium), 180-220 (fi ne), steel wool (coarse and fi ne, non-rusting) and a scouring pad (fi ne).

• Always remove sanding residue with a painter’s duster.

• A sanding block makes sandpaper easier to control. For larger areas, hand-held sanders are recommended.

Smoothing:

The surface becomes rough with sawing or painting and the grain becomes raised. This makes it diffi cult to apply an even coat and therefore reduces the protective properties of the coating. Levelling the wood grain by fi ne sanding produces a smooth surface.

Complete planing:

E.g. on heavily weathered fi nishes. On such surfaces the wood must be planed back to its raw state to obtain a stable surface.

Please note: it is also important to fi ne-sand surfaces between coats, for example when applying 2-3 coats of wood protection in order to improve adhesion between coats

Tip: You can recognise heavily weathered fi nishes from a grey staining of the wood. The layer of wood protection has partly or completely disappeared and/or fl aked off.

Sanding as pre-treatment - why and when?

Page 15: Wood Protection Guide · 2011-06-12 · BONDEX Wood Protection Guide As a living material, wood blends perfectly into the natural environment and creates its very own atmosphere outdoors

Give your wood the right touch

Sanding as pre-treatment - why and when?

1. Coat new wood

• Clean surfaces.• Sand down with fi ne sandpaper (grit 180-220), wire wool or a

scouring pad.• Remove sanding residue with a duster.

2. Restore weathered fi nishes

• Clean surfaces.• Smooth the old coat by sanding with fi ne sandpaper

(grit 180-220), wire wool or a scouring pad.• Remove sanding residue with a duster.

3. Change colour from dark to light

• Use coarse grain sandpaper (60 to 80) to sand or completely strip old, dark coats.

• Then smooth with fi ne sandpaper (180-220), wire wool or scouring pads.

• Remove sanding residue with a duster.

4. If impregnation is necessary

• Use medium fi ne sandpaper (100-120) to gently smooth down untreated softwood.

• Sand existing old coats back to the wood, using a coarse sandpaper (grit 60-80), then smoothe gently with medium fi ne sandpaper (100-120).

• Remove sanding residue with a duster.

Tip: When is a new coat due?

Place a damp cloth on the surface of the wood. If the wood darkens after a few minutes, the wood protection layer is no longer intact - high time for a new coat.

Page 16: Wood Protection Guide · 2011-06-12 · BONDEX Wood Protection Guide As a living material, wood blends perfectly into the natural environment and creates its very own atmosphere outdoors

Wood Protection?

• Stains are transparent coatings, to which insoluble pigments are added. They form a transparent fi lm with a coloured tint, through which the underlying wood/grain is visible.

• Opaque wood protection products are covering coatings - the entire colour fi lm is pigmented, the underlying wood is no longer visible.

Since the effect of UV protection essentially depends on the colour pigments, stains basically provide greater or more durable protection.

Thin-layer or thick-layer stains?

• Thin-layer stains form a thin fi lm and provide good physical protection for the wood. They weather in layers and therefore do not fl ake. Main use: parts that are not dimensionally stable such as, for example, front copings.

• Thick-layer stains form a strong, water-repellent fi lm. Their use is therefore preferred on dimensionally stable structural parts, such as windows and doors. These stains provide protection for a very long time as long as the fi lm is intact.

Translucent or colourless?

• Transparent pigmented stains create the desired effect on the tone of the wood.

• Colourless wood protection emphasizes the wood’s own natural colour. BONDEX has solved the problems of UV protection (no colour pigments) with the innovative BONDEX Colourless wood protection for external use with a special UV blocking agent.

Worth knowing about wood

Blue stain

A type of fungus which causes blue discoloration, especially in softwoods. Produces small fruiting bodies that destroy varnished or painted fi nishes.

Wood moisture

Wood moisture means the water content in wood. If this rises permanently above 20%, the wood becomes susceptible to fungal attack. Waterproofi ng is therefore recommended on woods intended for external use.

Wood components

Tanning and colouring materials impregnated in the wood, resins, wax and grease as well as mineral substances. Water-based stains or wood protection products can bring these to the surface. The extent of this effect depends on the type of wood and it can be reduced if necessary by applying a sealer.

Dimensionally stable structural parts

Parts such as windows and doors, which must not warp and must therefore maintain their dimensions. Minor changes in dimension are allowed for certain dimensionally stable parts, e.g. for tongue and groove extensions.

Page 19: Wood Protection Guide · 2011-06-12 · BONDEX Wood Protection Guide As a living material, wood blends perfectly into the natural environment and creates its very own atmosphere outdoors

Worth knowing about wood

Physical protection

Surface protection fi lms against UV rays and damp containing no, or very few chemical substances.

Pigments

Light-fast, non-soluble, weather and UV- stable pigment particles. As an integral part of stains and wood protection, they are responsible for the pigment tone.

Agent protection (biocide protection)

In-depth protection of the wood with chemical or biological agents (biocides), which protect wood by destroying fungi, for example, that cause damage to the wood.

Use biocides safely. Always read the labelling and product information before use.

Useful information about application• Do not dip your paintbrush more than half-way into the liquid

and wipe off any surplus thoroughly.

• Paint continuously (”wet-on-wet”) in the direction of the wood. You will then achieve a crust-free homogeneous fi nish.

• Wrap brushes in aluminium foil or cling fi lm during work breaks. They will then remain ready for use.

• After application, seal the opened can and turn it upside down. This increases its shelf life.
