These sessions provide parents and children with a fantastic opportunity to see our learning programs and socialise with children of the same age in preparation for starting school next year. Currently it looks like we have 10 students for Kindergartens so far for 2015. It would be great if we could continue to grow this number, so if any parents know of kindergarten age children living in our community please invite them along to participate in this afternoon session. Our term four program will be held on Thursdays. The dates will be: November 6th, 13th, 20th and 27th. Each of these sessions will run from 1.30 to 2.45pm, for these sessions we are encouraging children to bring a packed afternoon tea in a backpack so that they become familiar with the routine of getting their bag, unpacking their food and eating it as part of their daily routine. Developing Important Life Skills for all Woodbridge Students Over the last few weeks I have been discussing with students at Woodbridge School the importance of the value of commitment. Commitment is the dedication to a particular cause, or belief, and a willingness to become involved. It is about showing up, following through, and sticking to the task at hand even when things get challenging. Here are several reasons it is important: The more committed students are the more effective they will be in influencing others. If a whole group acts with determination and commitment, greater numbers of people will pay attention. Students who are committed are the ones who don't take discouragement seriously - they don't give up. They set an example for those who don't have the confidence or experience to go through the hard times and hold out for the rewards of success. Students cooperate at a higher level when they share commitment. Commitment fosters camaraderie, trust, and caring -- the stuff a group needs to keep it going for the long run. If students are committed to an effort for a period of time, they will learn what they need to know to be more effective. All students need time to try things out, make mistakes, and then figure out a strategy that works for them. Commitment doesn't usually occur at one moment. It grows within students over time. Commitment grows when students learn to: Work together Feel successful at what they do Make decisions together Wednesday 13 th August 2014 DATES to REMEMBER Learn to Swim Grades 3-6 4 th -15 th August 1-2pm Huon/Channel Primary Winter Games 26 th August Book Fair 23 rd – 24 th September Value of the month: Including Others For more dates click on Calender at the following address http://education.tas.edu .au/woodbridge/Pages/d efault.aspx Parents Emergency No. 0427 303 701 Student Absence Contact No. 6267 4205

• Work through conflicts • Support one another's leadership • Have fun and play together • Overcome obstacles • Hold each other to high principles • Appreciate and respect one another • Challenge one another to take the next step • Build relationships • Experience a victory together • Learn from mistakes and setbacks

Students who commit to having a go at a variety of activities and learning opportunities develop an array of hugely important life skills needed to be successful in the 21st century world we live in. By inviting our students to challenge themselves and become involved in a variety of educational offerings we are giving them an opportunity to:

• Work on an issue that is important to them • Benefit the community • Meet and spend time with like-minded people • Expand their skills • Be a part of a team • Learn how to lead • Rise to a challenge • Meet high standards • Accomplish something significant

At Woodbridge School we will continue to set high expectations as a staff for all our students and model and explicitly teach values and qualities that we believe are fundamental in building your child into successful 21st century learners. Hamish Cunningham Principal Primary Schools Dance Event Tasmanian Hockey Centre, Cornelian Bay - Wednesday 10th September All kindergarten to grade 6 students are busily learning their six dances with imagination and enthusiasm, so that the entire primary school can perform in this exciting event. The early childhood classes are learning dances about animals, horses, zombies and our beloved Tassie devil. The upper primary students are refining their movement and listening skills with a range of dances originating from cat dance sequences too far away fishing tales. The upper primary classes have needed to work around our annual Swimming and Water-Safety Program and all classes will get some extra practise in daily P.E sessions over the next two weeks, before we all put on our dancing shoes in week 7 for the big day. Over 1200 students will attend the Wednesday session with us. Mr Scott

MEDIA ALERT! What a year so far! The Media Department has been getting lots of recognition for the hard work students have been doing in this subject. First, we were accredited for producing a 45 sec video which highlighted the problems with ocean warming. The school was up against college and university standards and we were selected to be placed on the ‘Red Map’ web page for the world to see; each student

that participated got a cinema voucher. Secondly, there was a one-off competition held as a pre-requisite to the now famous, ‘My State’ film contest. We were asked to produce a small section out of a ‘Harry Potter’ film. We had fun developing it and were again recognised for our efforts, gaining a free professional work-shop with Screen Tas. Here we will have a professional crew come to the school and work with our kids in both acting and production techniques. It’s a wonderful opportunity for a small school to be able to see how the big companies produce media. And last, but certainly not least, the students participated in a ‘homeless’ video competition which incorporated an excursion to Hobart, to create the video. Here we looked at how two similar people can have totally different lives; one can be successful and the other can become homeless. It was an excellent day and the students conducted themselves in a mature and professional manner. This was ultimately rewarded, as the producers of the competition awarded the school with a runner- up prize; the school receiving a $1000 cheque and each participating student a $30 gift voucher. As the media teacher, I could not be more proud of the students of Woodbridge School. Well done and good luck in future media projects. Roland Gabatel

Swimming and Water Safety Program Grade 3-6 have been participating every day for the last two weeks in a Swimming and Water Safety Program at the Collegiate Pool. Students are improving their water confidence and swimming strokes as well as learning about survival techniques and water safety. It’s been great to see everyone enjoying the classes and having a

good time. The swimming coaches have been very impressed with our students. All students will receive a Record of Development Certificate at the end of the program. Outdoor Education Excursion August 15th 2014

Mount Wellington Summit and Sphinx Rock Walk. This Friday the Outdoor Education class will be going to the top of Mount Wellington where they will hopefully experience a snow covered environment, before descending part the way down the mountain by bus to the

‘Springs’, where they will have a hot drink and walk the short and clearly marked ‘Sphinx Rock’ track. The bus will leave school at 11.10am and return before 3.15pm.

News from the Garden One of the advantages of being a Stephanie Alexander School Garden is that we are able to benefit from the partnerships that the foundation has built across Australia. Recently we received 5 fruit trees from Fleming’s Bare Root Fruit Trees and on Tuesday the grade 3/4 class planted 3 trees over in the farm garden. These were; a ‘Moorpark’ Apricot, an “All-in-One’ almond and a ‘Sugar and Spice’ interspecific nectarine-plum. Students discussed what conditions were most suitable to give our new trees the best start and carefully selected the site to

reflect the trees need for protection from wind, good drainage, all day sunlight and space to grow. Also as part of the national celebration of the 25th and 20th Anniversaries of Landcare in Australia and Landcare in Tasmania, Ms Cath Earnshaw has been invited to attend a dinner at Government House to represent Woodbridge School. Cath Earnshaw, Landcare Teacher

German Luncheon On Tuesday Brianna and Issie from the German options class prepared a German-style lunch for several invited teachers. The students researched German cuisine and scoured cookbooks to select the following menu: Main Course: Zwiebelkuchen und Rotkohl mit Apfel

(onion tart and pickled red cabbage with apple) Dessert: Kalter Hund (“cold dog” chocolate slice) The girls did an amazing job in the kitchen and they received many compliments on their delicious cooking from the appreciative guests. We

would also like to thank Jess and Ms Earnshaw for their help and for access to the kitchen. Jenni Gourlay, German Teacher Breakfast Club Wanted; donations of spreads and jams. Thank you to those parents who have so generously donated breakfast items so far this year. Help!! We need volunteers for breakfast club. For the next two months we will be short staffed, so if you can commit for 1hour for 1 morning a week it would be appreciated.
