Interschool Quran Competition The Centre’s youth classes successfully participated in the Glasgow Inter School competition again this year, organised by Al- Meezan.
Last years success when Hafsah Bashir came first for delivering a speech on Salat and Sana Bashir came second in the Nasheed Com-petition was not replicated and no major prize was won this year. WEC Trustee, Mr Mohammed Rashid added, “I hope and pray for all the children continue entering this great competition. I am sure they will bring more success next year inshaAllah.”
Inter-faith Lectures at Woodfarm High SchoolWEC volunteer, and Chair of New To Islam (NTI) group, Abdul Azeem Climie, has been appointed Muslim Chaplain for Woodfarm High School. Br. Abdul Azeem gave a series of interfaith talks to the School students on Fri, 16 Feb 2012, which were very well received by pupils of all faiths.
John Stuart, the Depute Head, said: Abdul Azeem Climie’s Assemblies were well received. The content of the talk was very interesting.

Jumah Started at WECIn Nov 2011 WEC estab-lished it’s Jumah programme for adults - which was the first in East Ren for 40 years! This is in addition to the established Jumah prayer for children, held weekly during the school lunch hour.
WEC Trustee, Haji Rafique Chaudhry welcomed this news, “It is great to see WEC being able to accomodate ev-eryone; young and old, male and female for jummah”
Don’t Miss LecturesMaulana Habib Ur Rehman’s weekly lectures on a wide range of topics, every Friday, after Maghrib Salat

The leader of East Renfrewshire Council, Councillor Jim Fletcher visited WEC on Friday, 13 April, to announce the good news to the local Muslim community. The Centre’s acquisition from the local Council by the Trustees had been officially confirmed by the ERC Cabinet at its meeting on 12 April, with the charitable Woodfarm Educational Trust retaining eventual outright ownership of the facility and its grounds, and with current major restrictions no longer in place.
Councillor Fletcher said: “I am delighted that this overdue facility now finally belongs to the local Muslim community and I am very pleased that it has been such a tremendous success since its opening in ramadhan of 2010.” Trust Chair Mr Rashid said: “The Trustees and the local Muslim com-munity shall always remain indebted to Councillor Fletcher and his colleagues, Ken Macintosh MSP and Jim Murphy MP, for their unflinching support over the past four years, which has made this historic success possible. We look forward to further building on this together.”
Councillor Jim Fletcher congratulating the WEC Trustees, Mr Rashid and Mr Chaudhry on the successful acquisition
WEC acquisition from Council Confirmed!
WEC is your Community Centre, open for you and for your use In line with the Trust’s aims and objectives, the Woodfarm Education Centre (WEC) caters for all aspects of the Islamic faith and promotes a policy of tolerance and mutual respect for all religions and cultures.
WEC is not associated or related to any organisation or mosque in Glasgow but has its own independent ethos and code of conduct based on universal and Islamic principles of justice, compassion and service to humanity, which also promotes religious and racial harmony – in accordance with the aims and objectives of the Trust.
Therefore all organisations and people from all walks of the community are welcomed at the centre providing the activi-ties they promote are in accordance with its ethos.
URGENT WEC APPEAL 2012In order to build on its great success over the past year, which has culminated in the Woodfarm Educational Trust now securing the facility from the Council for an indefinite period, the Trust is now looking to raise a further £150,000 in order to carry out long needed refurbishments to the roof, aged (oil-based) heating system and car park as well as to help maintain the building for our generations to come.
Radio Ramadhan Glasgow generously donated more than £7,000 and over £50,000 was raised at the last WEC fund raising dinner on 25 Sep 2011. Please play YOUR part in our efforts and remember the Muslim community has never had such a central facility in the 40 years it’s been in East Renfrewshire.
Please collect a Pledge Card from the Centre or download it from the website. Also Direct debit forms are available at the Centre and online.
Feedback from the wider community “Can I also take this opportunity of thanking W.E.T as you have been nothing but excellent neighbours since taking ownership of the centre. Keep up the good work.”
Colin Girvan (Woodfarm Residents Group)
“Another successful event. WEC goes from strength to strength – and really at the heart of the community.”
Ken Macintosh, MSP for Eastwood

Inter-faith Lectures at Woodfarm High School
continued from page 1
Many staff reported that Abdul Azeem pitched the message extremely well by highlighting the tolerance and mutual re-spect that has existed between Islam and Christianity since the beginnings of Islam. Many pupils were also surprised to learn that you could be a white Scottish Muslim! This allowed staff to help pupils challenge their own preconcep-tions and, I think, helped to break down some stereotypes. Woodfarm High School is very grateful to WEC and to Ab-dul Azeem for giving up his time in this way to allow pupils the opportunity for meaningful reflection. We look forward to continuing working with WEC.”WEC Trustee Dr Tariq Mahmood said, “May Allah reward Abdul Azeem. It is great to see our relations further develop with local Schools”.
Another Successful Market @ the Grove continued from page 1
Saturday 11th February 2012 brought together families and communities from all races, cultures and backgrounds. Despite the weather a busy and very enjoyable day was had by all.
Mr Mohammed Rashid thanked all the volunteers who gave up their time to organise and facilitate the day. He said: There were over 15 stall holders and also other arts and crafts activities going on. WEC is very fortunate to have such dedicated and committed volunteers who give up their valuable time to support our centre. Thanks also to the com-munity who does their bit and attend time and time again. We all know we are lucky to have WEC and so it is only right we all do our bit to help progress the Centre”
