Newsletter Editor Wanted

Two years ago, I volunteered to be the club newsletter editor for a period of two years. Now that the two years is drawing to an end, it is time for me to step aside and encourage some new blood to take up the challenge.

As a relative newcomer to the ERSC, take it from me that being the news-letter editor is a great way to become more involved with club events and a great way to get to know the wonderful people here at ERSC. As a bonus the newsletter editor is also voting member of the board of directors.

If you would like to become more involved in the club, and have desktop publishing, design or computer skills in general, putting together the newslet-ter should be right up your alley.

If you’re interested, send me an e-mail and we can talk about the specifics.

March Reloading Classes

On March 2 and 16th, the ERSC hosted two reloading classes. A begin-ning and advanced class were both extremely well attended. In total, ap-proximately 115 members and guests attended.

Thanks go out to Scott Olson, Mike Miceli and Adam Shidla who volun-teered their time to teach and demon-strate.

ERSC HISTORY CONTINUESWORK BEGINS IN ELK RIVER ~ early 1960’s (Segment #3) In the early 60’s about 10% of the club’s 308 acres had some form of construction work happening on them. The range layout was planned to be built in a centering pattern. This pro-vided maximum noise buffering and bullet fallout control. Trees were left in place wherever possible and a program was set up to plant various types of pines on club boundary areas. The 40+ acres of virgin natural prairie grass and virgin tree growth we not disturbed. (excluding a random dirt bike here or there)

The club was known at the time, to have the endangered Skipper Butterfly thriving on the land’s prairie grasses. The DNR, MN History Department and the U of M were working together to insure the survival of types of grass seeds and the Skipper Butterfly and it’s eggs. It didn’t look promising at the time. The range plans were put together and money was tight so the search was on for salvage material for projects. After trespassing, vandalism and uncon-trolled firing issues at the Lebanon Range, members were eager to get the club property fenced in. Members acquired from construction projects, 150 piling cut offs, of which 30 were chosen for the bench rest tables and the rest were split into fence posts to

fence the property on the north and east sides.

Trap shooting was a high priority on the planning program. A plan was formulated to build a trap house and field. The early years users got by with a mechanical trap. Portable power gen-erators were used until electric power was brought in for the club house. After all this hard work members had things working quite well and were able to enjoy the fruits of their labor. However, they had some limitations due to low finances and low member numbers but they knew they were moving forward. The range soil makeup proved to be VERY challenging. The areas by the bench rest range were similar to a rice paddy and temporary target uprights vied for space with swamp water and trees. The area looks a lot different today because it had 3.5 feet of fill added. The first pistol target berm was not much help. With water levels that varied with the seasons, members were able to bulldoze up a berm ap-proximately 8 feet high, with kept part of the targets above water level--if it wasn’t raining too much. During a much welcome dry period, help came in to do some dirt mov-ing! The Sherburne County and Elk River Police felt that they could help improve the safety conditions at the pistol range. At the time the pistol range was positioned forward of the bench rest range. (This was before the 25-50 range as we know it now.) Some of the law officers who were part of an Army Reserve group, held a week-end field training project with their equipment at the pistol range area. They constructed the present berm that borders the east edge of the pistol range. Because of their past involve-ment at ERSC, we have continued to welcome local law enforcement to use our facility.

Cathy Hagen - birthday girl

Our own Cathy Hagen (membership chair) recently celebrated her birthday at the ERSC clubhouse. She isn’t tell-ing how many times she’s had her 29th birthday. When you see Cathy, please ask her to come clean!

Dylan Church - Deer Slayer

During last season’s archery deer season, junior club member Dylan Church bagged this whitetail deer. His first deer. Way to go Dylan!

Spring!

It is right around the corner. While March might be Minnesota’s snowiest month, the days are getting longer and the end is near. It has been a long winter. Some of my new rifles have started to come back from the gunsmiths just in time. I felt like a kid waiting for Christmas. I have been able to get out to the range a few times to start breaking in and developing loads for the new rifles. During my last few range visits, I have seen several new members using the range. The smiles on their faces tell all those around them that they are enjoying their membership.

There are nearly 100 new faces in the club for 2013. I’d like to again welcome those new members to the club. I sug-gest that all members take a moment or two to introduce yourself to those around you when using the range. We all have similar interests and you just might meet a new shooting buddy.

2013 looks to be another amazing year at the club. Plans are in the works to install running water and flush toilets in the clubhouse this summer. There are still a few unfinished small projects to complete on the new storage building. The storage lean-to and the stairs and deck for the second level storage area are on the list.

I know all of the activity chairs also have some projects on their to-do list for spring. Please mark your calendars for the spring work day, Saturday May 4th. This is the can’t miss day for the club and also one of THE social events of the year!

Scott Olson

President’s Report

With the two new member orientations completed in February, the club membership is now full. I would like to encour-age new members to read through the Club Bylaws booklet that was handed out at orientation. Most questions can be answered within. It is a good idea to keep it handy in your shooting bag or vehicle in case you have a question.

With all the new members, there has been a lot of activity on the RA signup calendars. If you haven’t signed up for your RA shifts yet, now might be a good time to lock in the shifts that work for you, rather than have to pick from what’s left towards the end of the year. As of the end of March, the RA shifts for April and May are nearly full up.

Here is a quick reminder on RA shifts, since this is the one of the items that members have the most questions on:

Each Regular member must work two RA shifts each year. RA shifts worked in January, February, November and De-cember count as one shift worked. RA Shifts from March thru October are divided into two shifts, AM and PM. Mem-bers can work a full day, both the AM and PM shifts and that will count as two RA shifts worked.

Members aged 70 (as of Dec 31, 2012) and older and Associate members are NOT required to work any RA shifts. Please do not sign up for RA shifts unless you are working for another member (taking their place) or filling in for an open RA shift at the last minute. Associates and Members aged 70 and older may work for another member (generally a spouse or family member) and credit that shift to them.

If an RA shifts is open 24 hours before the shift, ANY member can sign up for the shift. The goal is to keep the club open for shooting for all members. Members covering these shifts may opt to sell or give the shifts to another member. If a member wishes to pay another member to work their RA shifts that is a private transaction between the two mem-bers. If working for another member, be sure to list both your name and the member you are working for on the RA sheet for the shift.

Youth members may not work RA shifts.

Volunteers and Equipment Needed for

DNR Firearms Safety Class!

Dates and Times April 26 (Fri): 6:00pm to 9:00pm April 27 (Sat): 8:00am to 4:00pm April 28 (Sun): 9:00am to 3:00pm

Location

ERSC Clubhouse and Firing Ranges

Volunteer Instructors

You do not have to be a certified DNR instructor to help! You can help with the gun-handling exercises, like checking the chamber and passing a firearm to another person. We need the most people on Sunday to help with the field day activities listed below. Help for a few hours or all day.

Firearms

Although the club has a lot of show-and-tell stuff, there are some specific firearms needed for each class. Deer or bird guns, including lever-action rifles, bolt-action rifles, semi-auto sporting rifles, plus break-action, pump, and semi-auto shotguns would be appreciated. Hunting handguns would also be welcome. No family heirlooms, please! Participants (most of which will be kids) will be handling each firearm in class to see how it opens so they can check the chamber and identify the parts. They will practice passing it to the next student under the watchful eye of our volunteer instructors. Ideally, we will have one instructor per gun, so we would welcome your help with the class. Classroom gun handling will be Friday night and Saturday morning. During field exercises on Sunday morning, the students practice taking the cased firearms out of a vehicle, checking empty status, and putting them back in the case.

The kids have to fire about 15 rounds of .22 ammo on Sunday; they can use their own rifle if it’s in good condition, but a couple of extras are always welcome. Bolt actions are preferred.

Page 11: WOODS-WATER-WILDLIFE - er Sportsman · WOODS-WATER-WILDLIFE The newsletter of the Elk River Sportsman’s Club March/April 2013 Volume 57, Issue 3 ~~~~~ Club meetings are held on

We should be finished with all firearms by 3:00pm Sunday at the latest and can lock them up at the clubhouse or make other arrangements to return them to you, as necessary.

All lent firearms should be in a case with your name and phone number on an attached tag.

Other Stuff

We need someone to demonstrate using a tree stand. This should include use of a full-body harness, a haul line, a lineman’s belt (or safety line and ascender device), and other tree stand safety equipment. If you have a reasonably new tree stand and the related equipment, and can take the time on Sunday, let us know. (Only newer equipment is desired because we want the kids to get used to the idea that all these safety devices are ‘standard equipment.’ Please don’t offer to lend us the old stand you welded up in shop class in 1984.)

We’ve got fences at the club to practice crossing, but it would be nice to demonstrate getting in and out of a duck boat alone or with others, so if you have a small flat-bottom boat that we can set up (on dry land) to simulate firearm / boat safety, let us know. Again, that would be a Sunday morning activity. Legal floatation devices would also be needed for 2 or 3 people.

How long the field exercises will take on Sunday is something of a mystery. It will depend on how many participants we end up with, how long each station takes (there are 4), the time it takes to rotate the students to the next station, as well as the weather and other factors. After the field exercises, participants take the written test. Having folks to help correct the tests immediately afterwards goes faster with more people.

To fill time while the tests are being corrected – and in case we run short of our scheduled 3:00pm end time – we would like to have an archery demo and black powder demo standing by. Both traditional and modern black powder guns would be preferred for that demo, but we can’t be too picky.

Please contact me if you can supply equipment and/or wish to volunteer your time. ERSC work credits can be earned for time put in as a volunteer.
